GBAThe latest version of Exophase's gpSP GBA emulator for the PSP is now out for download.

gpSP v0.6 is still a beta release, so "watch out for new bugs," says Exophase. This new version still manages to fix a couple of bugs from the initial release, and offers a few new features, and adds new games to the game_config.txt file. New to this update are (taken from the Readme file):

Bug fixes
  • Fixed a nasty bug that shouldn't have made it into the initial release; a lot of games that TECM.. erm.. crash won't anymore. NOTE: This doesn't mean that no game will ever crash, freeze, otherwise not work.
  • Fixed some crashes in the GUI and the ability to "go up" past ms0:/PSP. Made the "go up" button square like it was supposed to be (instead of cross).
Feature additions
  • There's now a menu that you can access, by default press right while holding down triangle for the frameskip bar.
  • Menu option: resize screen aspect ratio, the default is now "scaled 3:2" which makes it look more like a normal GBA. You can use "fullscreen" (what it was like before) or "unscaled 3:2" (tiny but pixel for pixel like a GBA)
  • Menu option: You can now load new games while the current one is running.
  • Menu option: You can now restart the currently running game.
  • Menu option: Frameskip variation - this defaults to "uniform" whereas it defaulted to "random" last release. Basically, turn it on random if you find that frameskip causes flickering animations to make things disappear. Other than that it will generally look better on uniform.
  • GUI and file loading now have "auto repeat" on the buttons so they're not such a pain to navigate.
  • Menu option: Added support for 128KB flash ROM, some games require it (Pokemon Firered/Leaf Green, Super Mario Advance 4), turn it on before running the game to make sure it works. NOTE: There are some versions of these ROMs that have been hacked to get around their 128KB flash, and may not even work properly at all. Look out for them, these games should save 128KB save files after you set the setting to it, IF they use 128KB flash.
  • Menu option: Added ability to make the .sav files only update when you exit the emulator, use with extreme caution (in other words, it's not a good idea to use something like this in beta quality software if you care about your saves). Does NOT update if you exit through the home button, don't use the home button if you can help it.
  • Zip support thanks to SiberianSTAR. It will load the first file with the extension .gba or .bin that it finds.
  • Menu options are saved to gpsp.cfg. Note that it does not save frameskip options or flash ROM options because these are very per game particular.
  • The emulator will now try to save backup files to something more matching the backup size than a fixed 64KB.
Optimization
  • Loading ROMs and the auto save of the .sav files is MUCH faster now. Thanks for the heads up on how to improve this from pollux!
  • While coding for the screen resize code I found that SDL just wasn't cutting it and had to code for the GU myself. Turns out the new code is faster (but because it is render code any improvement will be diminished to nothing as frameskip is increased). Special thanks to Zx-81 for the tips on this one and for his GU code in the PSPVBA source as an example.
  • Added some games to game_config.txt. Note that not all versions of these ROMs will work with these options, try to use the USA version if possible.
Games in the new game_config.txt file (from game_config.txt file):
  • Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (U)
  • Megaman Battle Network (U)
  • Megaman Zero (U/E)
  • Megaman Zero 2 (U)
  • Megaman Zero 3 (U)
  • Megaman Zero 4 (U)
  • Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland (U)
  • Super Mario Advance (U)
  • Super Mario Advance 2 (U)
  • Super Mario Advance 3 (U)
  • Super Mario Advance 4 (U)
  • Advance Wars (U) (This one was really annoying to find, I hope it's okay.. there might be a better one somewhere)
  • Pokemon Emerald (U) (I don't know why this has an idle loop when Ruby doesn't....)
  • V-Rally 3 (E)
  • Mario Vs Donkey Kong (U)
  • Pokemon: Fire Red (U) (as well as European version; see the game_config.txt file for details)
  • Pokemon: Leaf Green (U) (as well as European version; see the game_config.txt file for details)
You guys know the drill: standard warnings still apply when you download, don't forget to read the Readme.txt file for the full details and instructions on how to upload to your PSP and get this program running. Any bugs you find, we have the comments page below and the gpSP 0.6 forums hotlinked at the end of this article.

» Golden Sun

Golden Sun works fine in scaled 3:2 and fullscreen, but once u switched to unscaled 3:2, it crashed. How weird, but OMG its perfect! Speed IS at perfect and sound is great, just a few minor problem. Great work.

by PailFace - 2006-08-26 16:20
» This is awesome

Great update to an already treffic emulator... Exophase's very first release had full speed on most games, many without even using the frameskip feature. Now he has added to this functionality of being able to load other roms from the menu, as well as button config, screen resize and increased stability. This is more than what alot of us could have expected so soon. Show your gratitude ppl and Exophase... keep up the great work on this project.

by pnoy - 2006-08-26 16:22
» w00t!!

Now all we need are (probably) a few more optimizations for (some) games, more compatibility, support for larger ROM sizes, and >SAVE STATES

anyways. greattt work exophase. i still can't get puzzle fighter to run at full speed. even with frame skip. but it's quicker than any other emulator that's out before.. wayyy quicker. keep up the good work. and thank youu!

Golden Sun crashes at the Camelot logo now. Can anyone host the gsSP folders (kxploited) with a working Golden Sun rom please?? sfidare@gmail.com

heh for those who might be havin problems with custom firmware just re-dl or replace yer bios and it should work fine (it did for me!)

» Nice!

Castlevania AOS doesn't crash on the title anymore, and the new menu rocks too.

If all your updates are like this then

by MrSpud - 2006-08-26 17:36
» Weird...

Ok, When I load Castlevania-aria of sorrow, it now crashes unlike before BUT if a load any other rom and then through the menu load castlevania again, its fine. Weird bug.

Final fantasy tactics still no main menu visible.

Castlevanias-harmony of dissonance is fine but if I go to the menu and then resume my play, the graphics all go to hell.

Castlevania-circle of the moon much faster

Yoshi's island (SMB?) won't work.

Great job otherwise!! This version seems much faster but still unstable.

Thanks.

Hey~ Has anyone noticed in Zelda Minish cap when you're supposed to cut down the trees to get to Lon Lon Ranch, this is not possible? You can slash alllll day, and they don't come down... The wierd thing is, I can kill enemies, but not cut down trees or bushes...! O_o

by nEcRo64x - 2006-08-26 18:41
» Impressive...

This emulator is truely one of the best homebrew releases this summer! It is amazing how fast you got GBA running on PSP (and with sound!), this was once thought impossible by many to reach these speeds. The update runs a lot faster than the initial release.

Great work, I look forward to future releases. Keep up the excellent work!

by Wyrick - 2006-08-26 20:42
» Possible Bug

Dunno if anyone else has this problem, but when I change the button configurations (Triangle=Start and Square=Frameskip) pressing square makes the frameskip menu flicker and I'm not able to increase/decrease it or goto the main menu. The only way to fix is to press home or reset the pspand run gpSP again. I don't mind using the default config, but would greatful if this could be fixed.

Other than this little nitpick gpSP runs great, nice work Exophase.

You must include the gpsp.cfg file AND the game_config file in the folder that does NOT have the % sign in it. Example gbsp1~1% is not the folder where as gbsp(large space)1 is... I understand some of you 9 year olds think this is cool and want to play pokemon but there are NO shortcuts in life, do it yourself and if you can't figure it out, do research!!!!!!! It might take longer but at least you can feel accomplished if you actually did it yourself!!!

extract the rar file -> use KXpolit to convert into 1.5 -> all the files from the files extrated, send it into the folder on the memrystick without the % -> put the gba_bios.bin in the gpsp folder without the % -> run gpsp and pick the rom

if it doesn't work, hold triangle and press right, go to FLASH ROM TYPE and select 128 and click restart game and it should work.

if it gets the blue screen every time you load a game then delete the folders from GAME and do the steps above all over again.

Minish Cap: really strange bug, you can't cut trees or grass, and if you try to grab anything it bugs too, except the pots!

Castlevania AoS: crash whereas before it didn't with the 0.5 :/, but i read in a comment that you can load any other game and then reload AoS while your other game is running.

Shining Force: There are invisible walls everywhere! It's hard to play, and when you have to talk to the king, you can't cuz there are walls around him =)

Harvest Moon: Fine, no problems, fast and good sound :).

This is a great emulator! What a superior job in such little time!

I have tested about 180 games, and a little over 100 work. Not bad odds at all.

» Interesting Glitch

This emu is coming along great. One thing I did notice. As I was testing some roms, a standard crash occured. Once I rebooted, I noticed that every time I tried to go to the menu, it would crash again no matter which rom I had loaded. After some investigation I realized that the initial crash had corrupts the .cfg file. After recopying it to my psp, everything worked fine again. Just a heads up for anyone that's having crashing issues.

» I LOVE THIS EMULATOR!!!!

Has anyone gotten GTA:Advance to work by tinkering around with settings? It's no big deal since I got GTA:LCS if I want gta on my PSP that badly, but I like gba emulation. It's cheaper and the screen and controls are better than the real thing. I hope you idiots dissing this emulator and its developer get an IP ban (such as post#131).

I knew dynamic recompile would be the answer to GBA emulation on the PSP, and I've waited for it so long. (I don't know how to program complicated stuff like that myself.) I've played Pokemon Fire Red about 4 hours straight today.

ok....not only do you need the bios file...you need to rename it to GBA_BIOS.BIN the when you load up the emulator and before you load a rom you must set the option of the flash rom to 128 kb in options. i was getting the blue screen too. but said hey what the hell and started f-ing with things. no one really says to change the flash rom type.

This is for all you noobs asking to be pampered...quit being dumbasses...heres what you do: google KXploit...... browse to your EBOOT, and set the directory to the one belonging to your psp...Then click generate or whatever...oh and make sure you put game_config.txt in the GPSP folder...download the bios from http://bumrun.hopto.org/odds-ends/GBA.BIOS . Rename it to gba_bios.bin.. put that in the GPSP folder, in that folder create a folder called 'roms', insert all your roms in there... NOW..the hardest part..turn your psp...wait for it...omg...ONNNNN. go to your Game mem stick and press x or o on GPSP...when it starts and you want to load a game..make sure the roms is highlighted white before you press x..then choose your game..(make sure its white)..if your stuck at the game go here: www.gamefaqs.com...google for a list of games which work on the current GPSP....and for the love of good...stop asking for people to set up all for you...

» Love the Emu

Great Work! What a first project!

It seems quite keen to corrupt the configuration file though. Mine keeps getting corrupted if I touch it at all, not just if I don't exit directly from the program.

I'm keeping an extra copy in the directory for irShell to repair with, but it would be handy for that bug to get squashed.

Also, any chance of rapid A or rapid B (see Homer's RIN) to be mapped to Square or Triangle? So many games where you end up mashing the A button to get through dialogue, and i've fallen in love with Homer's RIN's ability to skip through that.

Otherwise, well done, keep up the fantastic work! If you set up a pay-pal account, let the community know - you DESERVE something for this emu!

Ditto. And i'm not sure if its supposed to happen or not, but shouldn't you be able to cut down the bunches of grass. And when you pick them up shouldn't they temporarily disappear? This is quite confusing, i hope its fixed by the next version, if no one can offer a solution now.

» post 137, got the right idea...

kleeptone, your right about the corruption issue of the .cfg file. i freshly installed the whole package and it werked again. after reading your post, however, it isolated the problem. now i just replace the .cfg file. much quicker. 2 quick tips: '

1) download file assistant for psp(under organization apps /homebrew right here at qj) keep a spare gpsp.cfg file at the root of your memory stick. now whenever the file corrupts itself like a dirty nun, you can easeily replace it on the go WITHOUT visiting your computer. (turn off usb in fileassistant, then copy to your gpsp folder again.)

2)to all you noobs crying "kxploit it for me!" consider using "no kxploit" tool, available in downloads. it allows you to use 1.0 eboots, as well as already kxploited eboots, without further issue. i use it to cut down on my "hidden" corrupt icon folder slots by using the 1.0 version of many homebrews on my 1.5 psp
