gpSP 0.7 Release for the PSP

Ó

GBANews fresh from our forums: developer Exophase has released an update to to the Gameboy Advance emulator for the PSP, gpSP 0.6. Version 0.6, by the way, was released on August 25, so if this is the first time you're going to try this emulator out, feel good, it updates fast.

Exophase is hoping that most of the games that used to work with his previous update will still do with this one. He also warns users to not think of this emulator as anything more than a beta.

Here are some of the more notable things that came along with the readme:

Bug FIX:
  • Fixed a dynarec bug involving flags generating functions in contiguous conditional blocks. Fixes music in Super Mario Advance 2-4.
  • Fixed a dynarec bug where Thumb mov imm instructions wouldn't set flags. Fixes Zelda: Minish Cap, Megaman Battle Network, probably others. Comes at a slight speed cost.
  • Fixed a MIPS dynarec bug where some delay slots might not get filled rarely, causing chaos. Don't know if it improves any games.
  • Improved self-modifying code detection. Makes Golden Sun, Golden Sun 2, and Madden 2007 sorta work but excruciatingly slowly. Looking for a game-specific workaround for this - if you want to play these games you'll have to wait for now :(
  • Fixed a bug causing the interrupt disable flag to go down when SWIs are entered, causing crashes/resets. Fixes Super Mario Advance 2-4.
  • Fixed menu crashing when strings with certain characters are printed (for instance going to the menu after loading the BIOS)
  • Accidentally forgot to render win0 + win1 + objwin when all active at the same time, many weeks ago. Added that, should fix some parts in games that had frozen screens.
  • Fixed some issues with gpsp.cfg needing to be present and corrupting, hopefully. At the very least sanity checks are performed on the config file.
  • Made it so assigning the frameskip button to something besides triangle actually worked as expected.
  • Fixed ability to restart current game if nothing is loaded (ie, crash)
  • Added interrupt on cpsr modification support to the dynarec (fixes backgrounds in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance)
  • Added open addressing for ldm/stm instructions (fixes Super Mario Advance 3)
  • Improved cycle accuracy a little. Don't know of anything this fixes, but games with idle loops will run a little better w/o idle loop elimination (but should still be added when possible)
  • Fixed some bugs causing sound to play sometimes when it shouldn't.
OPTIMIZATIONS:
  • Added dead flag elimination for Thumb code. May possibly have noticeable performance increases (Thumb emited coded size can have a reduction of 20% or more)
  • Added code generation for divide SWI. May have a small speed increase in some games.
NEW FEATURE:
  • Added analog nub support (special thanks to psp298 for the code)
  • Added fractional frameskip. Go below 0 to get them. A frameskip of 1/2 for instance means render 2 out of every 3 frames, 2/3 means render 3 out of every 4 frames, etc. Possibly useful for games that are not quite fast enough at fs0 but fullspeed at fs1...
As always, since this is a beta release, standard warnings apply. You guys know the drill. For any bugs found there's the comments page of this article and the forum thread sourced below. Enjoy folks!

If you've read the readme or tried out previous versions of the game, you know you gotta have the BIOS for the GBA to use it. Exophase doesn't provide it because it's illegal to have this in possession except for if you have a GBA for yourself. Someone here or somewhere else can probably provide one, but try googling for it too.

# idle loopsGuest 2006-09-10 02:27
Now, one of the biggest problem is the region of the game for the idle loops :/

i'm not english, and in the game_config.txt there are only fixes for us versions.

Sometimes exophase found an idle loop for the european version, in which case he said to try this special euro idle loop instead of the us, but it doesnt work, at least with pokemons.

And the way to find yourself the idle loops is a little complicated, and to be honest, i didnt understand anything to the method :) !

You haven't gotten this information from me though :D.

# Advance Wars and Other Goodies!Guest 2006-09-10 08:07
First, the analog stick now works! Yay!

Advance Wars not only works, but runs at FULLSPEED now!

Final Fantasy Tactics now FULLSPEED at 1 frameskip with PERFECT SOUND.

Golden Sun now works and doesnt crash and yes, it is fullspeed.

The NEW Lego Star Wars II game which is actually protected with a new type of security, runs flawlessly at 100% fullspeed with just 1 frameskip. *Awesome.*

Lord of the Rings 2 towers and RoTK both games are playing at fullspeed w/perfect sound and music. (portable Diablo woot.)

And, last but not least Tactics Ogre now works fullspeed with sound at 0 frameskip. (My favorite game!)

I never ever thought I would say this but, because of this emu, I officially replaced my spankin new DS Lite with my psp as my handheld of choice to travel with.

Thank You creator of this program. You are the best.

Get the emulator here, BIOS included and two games to get you started. All you gotta do is drag and drop the two folders to your GAME folder and you're set to go. This is only for PSPs with firmware 1.50 (but if you use another firmware you can still get the BIOS from this package, so have at it):

# Summon KnightsGuest 2006-09-10 10:39
In v0.6, I got stuck in Summon Knights, during a battle with Ureksa, because it crashes during the battle. This happened during previous battles against bosses too, but I managed to beat them quickly enough that the game didn't crash. But it always crashes at the beginning of the fight with Ureksa, I can't get passed it. Has anyone gotten this? Does 0.7 fix it? Any other way to fix it?

The latest version I can find compatable with the Porter eloader v0.98 is gpsp v0.5 Beta. The most updated ones crash. I really hope Exophase fixes this. I want to play a my gba games on my PSP full speed and with no glitches. I do want to thank you Exophase for v0.5 Beta though as it is ok for some games.

# to #68Guest 2006-09-10 12:53
Actually, I think that the eloader needs to be fixed, because the 0.97 on gta runs the emulator great for 2.6 ;) So if you have gta, you can still use the newest version... if not, then you'll have to wait I guess...

# Why dont you guys having problems just downgrade?!Guest 2006-09-10 14:29
There is no excuse for not downgrading at this point.

With Devhook, it's just like having dual firmwares. I am experiencing 98% compatibility on all the roms I have tried so far. Only 2 measly roms are not working for me. All the MAJOR games(AW, Metroid,Pokemon ,Mario, etc.) work without flaw and usually at fullspeed. Im almost certain it's because of my 1.5 firmware. I run gbsp through IRSHELL and ramp the cpu to 333mhz. Most games run fullspeed at 222 though.

Okay well maybe I exaggerated it a bit but every game that I've personally HASN'T crashed. The Minish Cap is running good, a japanaese game called Rhythm Tengoku is working perfect, MMBN6 runs BUT...the sprites are blocky and you can't go into another area but sound and mapping is perfect. The only game that I've tried that has crashed is KHCoM. But this thing is seriously really close to being almost done. A definate jump from the other GBA emus.

I am really impressed by the speed and the sound (finally can play metroid games, fullspeed, nice sound, without crashing) and the compatiblity (even still early) is still great !

Keep up the good work ! :D

in under 10 minutes. It's been how many hours since you asked, and got no reply?

So yes it would be easier to check yourself!

You guys are right, how dare someone asks a question on this message board, how dare they ask for help in any way. This board is just for complaining about developers work, which they do for free, and celebrating like a tool when you get first post.

Lighten up guys this site is for helping people for *****s sake.

If you cant find something better to complain about, please kill yourselves now and save us from having to hear your pointless whining.....

@91 Dont waste your time arguing with them man, douche bags like that are on every board on earth........unfortunately we cant kill them all.....

It's called doing things for yourself, before asking questions for every little thing in life.

And think about it. If someone says, yes that games DOES work, then what's he going to do? He's going to go download the emu, bios, and rom anyways. WTF is the point in being too lazy to just do that in the first place?

There was not one complaint about a developer. There's a big difference between an ungrateful prick (and I agree that sometimes it seems that's all you see on here), and someone pointing out lazyness, and obviously hitting a nerve.

dOOBER - stick to fighting battles that make sense to fight, especially when they have nothing to do with you.

Gee . . . suggesting murder and suicide makes you a much better person than someone who points out someone's lazyness. But you're obviously really young, so go at er I guess. One day you'll realize that you're actually part of the problem with the mentality you use to post.

hmm - I know you're young also, so whatever. The point isn't that you shouldn't ask questions, the point is that you shouldn't ask "lazy" questions. And you didn't get an answer in here within an hour. :P

The funny thing though, is that if you hadn't been too lazy to read the other posts, you would have seen that your question was actually answered before you asked it.

Too lazy to read the previous posts, or take a couple minutes to test for yourself, but not too lazy to come back here and attempt to start a flamefest.

Youth . . .

Uhh my first post about advanced wars was at 10:52 am #49 i got an answer from #57 at 10:07, it was a little over an hour shief.

You know crap man, im 26 and was at work, I just wanted to know if advanced wars worked so i had something to look forward to when i get off....

That is still a completely asinine thing at whine about....Someone asking a question???? That just sounds completely insane........

You do realize that it wasn't actually an answer to your question, but rather it just happened to answer your question right?

It just doesn't make sense to ask questions here, you're more likely to get an answer in the forums. You might as well ask if you'd save money by switching to Geico in here. But you obviously just don't get it, or you would realize that the real asinine insanity is thinking that the average person in here actually wants to help you, and getting so worked up over something so trivial. Relax, and enjoy some advance wars man! (when you're done work :P)

Actually, I want an eLoader 0.98 TIFF version. Sure, the so-called 1337ists here would rather I downgrade and not bug them for it.

Yeah, I'd do that, too. Except that the PSP ISN'T MINE... it belongs to an elder family member who doesn't trust me with flashing stuff anymore after a run-in with an old Sony Clie.

I've done bios flashes on my PDA-phone successfully, tho, so I'm not partial to trying this stuff out - it's already confirmed safe, and I've already confirmed the board in question isn't a TA-082. But you know how it is - I told the person to get a 1.5, but someone wants it in White, Brand New, there aren't any 1.5 Whites that aren't second hand, and I'm not allowed to do any drastic stuff that has even a 0.1% chance of bricking anything.

Appreciate it if the TIFF 2.6 version turns up.

You suck. I currently have Mario Kart AND Super Mario Advance running and close to perfect speed. You're probably missing the bios file is NEEDED for the emu itself to work.

This is really irritating, I wish I had read the posts first so I didnt waste time. I am also getting that same crash, at the second phase of the Octorok boss, its when you light the lantern to be exact. Would be nice to have a fix to this.

here is how u pass the droplet boss...when u light the tail on fire for the first time u turn the lantern off immediatly after u set him on fire....then the second time u wait a few seconds then light him on fire...(might sound stuid) but it worked for me...im already in dark hyrule...at the end the droplet boss spits out a smoke screen...dont turn on your lantern or that will make it freeze too...hope this helps

# how i got mine to work.Guest 2006-09-23 10:52
well first of if the folder for the gpsp is exactly like i just spelt it. Its likely not to work. rename it to gpSP with a capital S and the P after it. then rename the bios file to gba_bios . I assume its already a bin file. so no need to rename it to gba_bios.bin. it wont work. I tried it. It should work then. For those of you with firmware 2.5 up. only gpsp 0.5 will work. the others dont. though 0.5 is the first, it works great. can manage that while you wait for the update. I repeat only 0.5 works. 0.6 and 0.7 will not work on 2.5,2.6 etc.

# A few games with issuesGuest 2006-09-23 22:11
First of all, according to people I've talked to, the PSP only has an internal memory of 16MB, so (for now), ROMs greater than that will not work. This means Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

Now, for my own issues. I have tried playing MMBN2, to great vexation. In v.6, it would load the game just fine, but the sprites were gone. Now, when I try to play it in v.7, upon selecting New Game, it just gives me a blank screen, which is apparently the menu. The location is something like Virus Lab. Not sure.

Next is Medabots. Both Metabee and Rokusho versions get either a "bad jump" or BSoD when I'm on my way to the house for that damnable show he insists on watching.

If anyone can offer suggestions for these issues, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks. :)

# Other games with issuesGuest 2006-09-24 02:48
Some other games I've found with some issues...

Metroid Zero Mission plays perfectly on FS2 but if you try to run the "Original Metroid" option, it crashes.

Tetris Worlds, Grand Theft Auto crashes

I think it might just be the ROM but as the previous guy said MMBN2 has issues.

Other than that, I've been playing this thing nonstop for the last 3 days =D

When I noticed the 'internal battery has run dry and some clock events will not be occuring' or some sort of error at the start when I log on the Emerald rom. At first I didn't care but then after a while I realized berries aren't growing... and they seem to have the same problem with the VBA emulators as will except they could fix it on the comp but does anyone know how to fix this on a PSP?

I got my psp now for 3 days or something because i didn't wan't to exchange my GBA for a Nintendo DS.

I searches just for fun for wallpapers and psp demos and what do i find?

A GENIUS named exophase making nearly some magic by wrtiting a emu for PSP.

That's incredible.. but this caught my attention because i'm really no good at these things and then i find you guys giving that much of helpful advices.

Though i have still to figure it out how i should make i run on my psp i just want to thank all of you and of course Exophase.

hi guys its me again, so far it seems that i have got everytihng..; the emu, the bios.file.. a rom.

But i can't downgrad my psp though. I did not know how difficult it would be to downgrad a psp and i've updatet it to V.2.81. :-(

Concluding from what i have seen so far, there is still no way to downgrad that version, so i guess that i have to be patient before selling my GBA.

Well i wonder what is going to happen first. I guess that there will be a device hock to downgrad 2.81 but i its also possible that exophase is making it run his emu on all psp versions.

So do your Best!

# transfering savGuest 2006-10-07 10:12
is there a way to transfer and modify sav files from gpsp to the computer? it is saved as a 32kb sav file on the psp, but the computer emulator only recognizes 8kb sav files. In minish cap, i get the blue screen of death when i use the flame lantern in the octorok, so i want to do the boss battle on the comp then start off after that back on the psp
