Daedalus X64 - Image 1

Big news, the beta 2 for Daedalus X64 is out now and ready for download. This version features some major changes, so your ROMS run much smoother than before, plus a lot of other changes from the first beta. Check the complete changelog below:

DaedalusX64 Beta 2 - 1 March 2009
  • Added exception handler to emulation (Chilly Willy)
  • Made UI selection wrap at top and bottom (Chilly Willy)
  • Cleaned up the ROM preferences (Chilly Willy)
  • ME Audio uses CPU event (CPU event system made thread-safe) (Chilly Willy)
  • ME Audio made conditional (Async = ME, Sync = Old Audio) (Chilly Willy)
  • Several Custom Blends Added (Kreationz, ShinyDude100, Wally)
  • Rewrote microcode detection to fix a couple of bugs (StrmnNrmn)
  • Added support for LOAD_UCODE, fixes a number of rendering glitches (StrmnNrmn)
  • Speed hack detection (howard0su)
  • Added JPEG support (howard0su)
  • Fixed an assert causing some homebrew not to run (StrmnNrmn)
  • Added support for FlashRam and Eeprom16k save type (howard0su)
  • Reworked saving/loading system (howard0su)
  • OSEHLE Enabled with several OSHLE commands (Small speed up)(howard0su)
  • Improved Audio ME code (Faster with Audio on) (Chilly Willy)
  • Use VFPU to handle more transform and lighting (StrmnNrmn)
  • Various rendering optimisations (StrmnNrmn)
  • Various ucodes, many games show up correctly now (Wally)
  • Corrected many savetypes in rom.ini (Wally)
  • Various code cleanup (howard0su)
Glad to see that StrmnNrmn is back in action, by the way.

This release also comes in different "flavors" as Kreationz put it. "Lite" has only the essentials to play, no more than that, so it comes at less than 1MB. There's the expansion, which features controller configs and box art for most ROMs, thanks to the JPEG support. There's the full version, which is a combination of both Lite and the expansion, which is recommended for most users to give them the full experience.

Then for debuggers, there's the Developer package, which is built in debug mode.

Only the Lite version is available so far at SourceForge, so we'll update this post as soon as the others arrive. Well, that's about it, download and enjoy!

It just keeps getting better and better! =)
by unknown_knight - 2009-03-01 23:32:45
Games???

is Super Smash Bros. still SLOW? kinda of wanna download and kinda don't want to....because i was disappointed that the older version was very SLOW.
by unknown_knight - 2009-03-01 23:34:55
NVM

ajnauron already test it, guess i dont have to waste my time. Thanks Man!!
by spankmaster - 2009-03-01 23:38:29
smash bros

its not that slow at ALL! frameskip one or two with software clipping disabled and your lookin mighty good. ajnauron is probably just kinda picky. i think its running GREAT! i tested a 1v1 on hyrule castle. i gotta say there isnt much to complain about!
by lavino - 2009-03-02 00:29:06
is Zelda64 running in good speed now?

I am still waiting for the day to be able to play through the whole thing on PSP
by ajnauron - 2009-03-02 00:35:38
Not that it's not ok...

Yes, it's running at a good speed. But it's the same speed as beta 1. No real speed IMPROVEMENT.
by DarkXCloud - 2009-03-02 00:45:26
Woohoo!

Keep up the good work, guys.

So what?Did you gain anything from that???Are you feeling wiser or cleverer???I saw it a lot earlier than you, however I did not intend to spam with nonsense...I cannot understand you and all those that think they are "the big man" while flooding and annoying others...
by spankmaster - 2009-03-02 01:15:30
haha

i really dont care, i was honestly making fun of the whole "first post"thing, hence the miss capitalized letters. lol (guess i didnt put enough of them) but ya, not sure you saw it too much before me either since i hit this page bookmark and hit refresh instead of back and it was there, with picture wasnt even up for the post yet, but once again, i could give 3 flying sh*ts less. you coulda seen it .834 secs before, after me or 3 years before me and i would not waste an extra blink towards expressing discontent... because i have none, lol so ya, lets all just take a deep breath and chill. Btw, responding to the whole "first post" people makes it worse, it kinda validates it and gives'm attention. just throwin that out there.

sigh!

Get a Life! and a g/f
by NathanDrake - 2009-03-02 03:12:09
hey

I've lent my PSP to my friend to play God of War so I can't test it but all I want to know is... can this run Starfox 64 at a decent rate? It's pretty much the only reason I never sold my otherwise massively disappointing (and headache inducing) N64 and I'd like to play it on a portable.
by Ryanfromtheshire - 2009-03-02 04:30:46
great speed!

It runs at almost full speed, with the sound off. Or at least it did for me. I put together a small compatibility list already: http://www.dgemu.com/forums/index.php?showtopic+433034

Wow

Keep up the good work. Beta 2 is a good improvement.
by shivadow - 2009-03-02 07:42:58
PSP 1000

Asynchronous sound emulation is broken. Works faster over all but the sound is crap in Synchronous mode. Very little progress here.
by b|ank Crossfire - 2009-03-02 07:51:28
Starfox 64

Runs surprisingly well. Zelda still kind of a dud. Keep up the Great Work!
by jbwzrd213 - 2009-03-02 08:05:28
Wow...

Guys, chill. If you're annoyed that someone's sound retarded by saying, "Am I first?!" then just ignore him. Don't make yourself sound stupid, too. Be more mature.
by nall256 - 2009-03-02 08:18:50
Sync?

I was fine with the framerate for Zelda with beta1 but my inputs were delayed more than a second when the "sync" dropped, does this version improve it (i'm stuck in class).
by StingBlah - 2009-03-02 09:02:32
Binary and Dragon92...just have one thing to say about your comments

0.o still no majora's mask

I've gotta say it's pretty lame that LoZ Majora's Mask still doesn't work... still many prolems with Ocarina of Time, but keep up the good work, I mean at least it's playable with good fps.
by Zi-Bit - 2009-03-02 09:45:01
Dif?

What's the difference between the two (I'm not being sarcastic here, I really am curious)?
by Salvy - 2009-03-02 09:52:24
....

Guys before you comment that a game is running the same or doesn't work, try many combinations with the settings, I recommend to disable frame limiter, and use frame skip 2. SSB runs a lot better in slim, all the roms up to 16mb get loaded in the slim's memory, that's why you notice a slight delay when loading those roms.
by Zi-Bit - 2009-03-02 10:30:00
I did

I changed the settings a bunch of times ^^
by KylBlz - 2009-03-02 12:07:35
YAY

THANK YOU1! this is pretty much amazing. SSB is kinda slow but hey, just tinker around with the settings and its playable. I want to see STARCRAFT get > 10 fps lol [yeah right that game is huge]

As a dev myself I'm always shocked at the state of which these apps can be pushed out. I wouldn't count this as beta at all, it's much too problematic and slow, and fundamentally flawed by the lack of controls.
by Metal Jody - 2009-03-02 14:55:28
YEAH!

finally! thank you dudez!
by nall256 - 2009-03-02 14:58:27
well

quite honestly i'm not sure, it doesnt seem to have to do with the audio and video sync. The near 20 fps i'm getting should be more than enough to play the game, but this delay is just damning.
by blackthorn - 2009-03-02 15:02:54
typical

Whilst I applaud work for this EMU I think it's a continual problem with Dev teams working on new features before the core of the application is 'complete'. 99% of users out there couldn't give a stiff ***** about being able to view box art if the games still run at 8fps. Without GOOD quality FPS (ie 30+), the rest of the emu's functionality is honestly pointless. 'nuff said.
by blackthorn - 2009-03-02 15:06:42
Agreed

Whilst it's always good to applaud the devs for taking the time and effort to work on such a project, it's no end of frustration for me to point out time and again that devs are not addressing the core issues in favour of taking the 'easy' kudos by releasing new versions of buggy code with pointless 'X' feature. Until the fps is acceptable along with quality sound output, this is not an EMU. It's a proof of concept.
by wally - 2009-03-02 15:15:54
hrmm

Well you do have to have public opinion, Revision 3 is not going to be as buggy as there are a lot of things we are looking at (One of the features of Rev 3 is to move the CPU to the ME, there are a few in discussion too which i'm sure will come to light soon enough). The public has waited long enough (Last release was in October), and Howard did say we had to release it because of regression from sorting stuff and prepping it for ME. Anyway as stability is an issue, audio will be removed from the ME (This is a core issue) and synchronous audio will be used instead. Lots of other things will be fixed as well, so we might see that "real release" you keep asking about. I don't know what Roms you guys are trying but please say.
by Metal Jody - 2009-03-02 16:29:04
oh.

Goldeneye isn't working.
by FORCE4121 - 2009-03-02 16:40:22
not bad....

I would really love to see castlevania legacy of darkness, donky kong 64, and a few other games on here. but over all great improvement on legend of zelda, the audio is still choppy but as you said its a beta
by Matt91 - 2009-03-02 16:51:41
...

Just ignore the haters guys. Good to see that this project is still coming along.
by ghettoblastedXD - 2009-03-02 18:01:15
well...

There was a version of goldeneye made for the pc, its pretty much the same and it was ported to the psp. I used to have a while back so i know that its out there, just google it, im sure you will find it.

LoZ Text problems

Will the weird text issue in OOT ever be fixed? It's a bit annoying to see "Thec hiliri has his or her own guardian fairy" Of course it's not a necessity, and it only seems to happen in that one game, but it's something that's been there since anyone could get that far in the game, and it's still not fixed.
by wally - 2009-03-02 19:02:30
Ha

Heh, they'll be quoted in a teaser another day +)
by Luigi Panache - 2009-03-02 19:02:46
About the equals sign.

The comment system on QJ makes any equals sign turn into a +. See? So I can say 1+1+2 and It won't be an equation. This applies to URLs too, so you can post any URL with a form submission. Just change the plus sign in the URL to an equals sign.
by ajnauron - 2009-03-02 19:57:00
Thx for the link

I was looking for that.
by ajnauron - 2009-03-02 19:59:34
Not just 30fps

Whenever onscreen action becomes more intense, the framerate dips. Therefore, you need at least 50fps average in order to not have massive lag. Even when it averages 30fps, you will get slowdowns more than occasionally as onscreen action requires more processing power.
by ajnauron - 2009-03-02 20:03:30
Wally's comment

I don't think it's a matter of "the public having to wait", it's more of "Can you spend time making this better so that people will notice it". For example, Beta 2 running smash bros shows MORE graphical glitches than beta 1 on the same settings with little to no noticeable speed increase from beta 1.
by Salvy - 2009-03-02 20:59:04
Blackthorn+ Noob

I you think this "Added JPEG support" is a feature to show the previews.... It just shows that you are a complete ignorant. First of all the previews are png format, been in daedalus since forever. Second of all the jpeg support refers to JpgTask used to decode jpeg data into a picture when emulating the RSP in HLE.
by blackthorn - 2009-03-02 21:32:53
Salvy+ *****tard

You missed the point you moron - they keep releasing this thing over and over again with minimal (if any) fps increases which is the BIGGEST core problem with the EMU at present. I might give less than a crap about specific details you like to dance on you pedantic prik, but the general gist of what I'm getting at still stands with those who don't have their fanboy heads shoved up their ass. Get the picture?
by Ryanfromtheshire - 2009-03-02 22:40:15
yeah

Yeah I realized that. I'm on to their scheme now. I'm glad people realized that, though. My list is pretty weak, but I just did the games I was interested in.
by ajnauron - 2009-03-03 00:00:55
Doom wad

It's called a doom wad. It's a psp doom mod.
by wally - 2009-03-03 00:50:55
SSB

Here you are wrong, I suggest comparing both side to side.. BTW, Slim owners will most probably notice it more. You can't expect all emulators to be perfect.. Beta 2 was started in October and its now March.. 5 Months work, its not easy (especially when StrmnNrmn is really incharge of the Graphics / Dynarec stuff but he's busy with work)
by Salvy - 2009-03-03 10:00:09
....

It was fixed, just turn on Texture update....
by Don Slamo - 2009-03-03 14:14:26
WOW

i can't wait until this emulator runs at full speed without no glitches. U guys improved so much, no wonder it takes so long. Btw u devs are the best luv u, no homo
by Metal Jody - 2009-03-03 14:48:35
they'll be quoted in a teaser another day.

lol. gotta love that karma.
by Day Twelve - 2009-03-04 00:46:48
Props the devs but...

I'm getting a ton of crashing now. It will just lock up. I can hit the home menu, but when I click to quit the game I get stuck on "please wait..." This has happen on SSB and Paper Mario. Still though, great work. It's just far from done.
