Daedalus WIP Update: New Build Coming REALLY Soon |
Listed in: Homebrew Emulators, Emulators Tags: Daedalus, N64, psp homebrew emulators, StrmnNrmn
Ó
StrmnNrmn has just posted an update on his N64 emulator, Daedalus. There were just a few things he noted but since a lot of people are looking forward to the release of the improved version of the emulator, StrmnNrmn likes to keep everybody posted about his progress. This is something the Daedalus fans will love to hear: StrmnNrmn plans to release a new build by today or tomorrow at the latest. The new build would have been released to all the Daedalus fanatics last weekend but the author needed to polish a few things first. Coming from StrmnNrmn himself, "I've got a slight bit more to finalise, but there should be a couple of nice little additions since the source drop last week."
A couple of nice additions, eh? I wonder what those are? I bet most of you are already excited. Hang on tight...I know a few hours may seem like eternity when waiting for a really good emulator, but I'm pretty sure StrmnNrmn will make it worth the wait.
Thanks shunsai for the heads up!

Save state and an exit to the rom browser would be nice additions.
if you guys are so antsy, pick up the R5 release compiled by psdonkey over at psp-hacks forums in general section. He is a talented coder, you can trust him. Just kinda bluffed a lil on the n64, but he is still trying to get his ultimate64 emulator on its feet.

The PC comparison's are moot IMO. Even the older PC's have alot more resources available to them then a PSP.
ANyway - I'd be MORE then willing to completely give up sound for stable full-speed.

The challenge of creating an N64 Emulator for the PC alone was a dounting task 5 or 6 years ago and to see it on the little black device sitting infront of me is amazing.
First of all, Not all games are goling to be compatable with this. From what I remember of PC N64 Emulation roms had to have specific codes for the emulators to make sure the graphics showed up properly and such, otherwise you had massive graphical errors.
Stuff like mario and bomberman, (I.E. EARLY N64) titles will probably reach something around 75 percent of fullspeed with good frame skiping and good coding, Goldeneye will probably work at the same point.
LATER games with more complex graphics and the Expansion pack probably arn't going to work, I.E. Resi 2 and zelda MM.
If zelda becomes playable, that'll probably become the landmark title.
One question on my lips right now, is that if this is possible, why in the heck hasn't the GBA emulation scene taken off yet? It's bizzare.
Anyhoo, Much Praise to the author, and keep up the good work. (Nice one making it open source too, SO much gets done faster that way)
Spikey!xx

Any ROM over 15 MB in size will run slow.
ROMs like Mario Kart 64, WCWvs.NWO, Goldeneye, Rogue Squadron, etc... are all pretty small and should run (SOME DAY) at 30 FPS hopefully.
Big Roms like Zelda: Ocarina of Time will probably NEVER work wince they are HUGE and probably required the N64 Expansion Pack, which would push it out of the PSP's threshold.
Don't get your hopes up people.

Quit saying stuff like:
"Oh no it's trash like the other ones, it will go slow...."
And shut the F%#@ UP! Do any of you seriously know how hard it is to code something this major? God I don't know why they don't IP ban the damn idiots that say bad stuff about the things being developed.....
If you don't like it, don't post and tell off the developer......
Seriously, QJ, you need to ban some of these users.........all they're going to do is drive off the developers from here......
Do you really want them going to PSP3D?
Ugh............PSP3D...........n00b city....

ROFL that was funny.
Just got the compiled pre-release of the latest build a few days ago, and i was impressed, mario was on the verge of being playable, and I mean that, if this emu gets a little more stable, and a little faster, with basic save support, I will play games on it,and not 10 sec then turn it off. The textures are AMAZING! especialy on SM64. If theres save, speed and stability, which is possable for some, if not most games, i wll play it. because every time i see that fat Italian plummers big poligonated head pop up on my psp's screen, a tear comes to my eye.
to psmonkey, we all miss you you please come back, you tried so hard and got so far, why quit now? :(
great work strmnnrmn, make us proud
(btw how do you pronounce that? is it stormin normin? lol)

Anyway, nice to see N64 emulation coming along nicely. Im sure this version will be great

No game REQUIRES the expansion pak. You can use it if you WANT to enhance the game. The game will still run without it.

I tryed em both since i have my psp back and i really can,t see why people are so happy about it, it does'nt add anything to the psp homebrew we alreay have right now.
waiting 10 minuts to get to the end of a intro movie (or i rather say picture slice) hell yeah what a fun, lets try another rom and see what for a picture slice show its in it
it really isn,t playeble right now
Ofcourse i dont want to backstab every 64 emu fans i want it myself too. I have like 1500 n64 roms from the PJ64 periode and would love to play em on the psp, so i really hope the new daedalus version will play the 64 roms like it should.
But i think when i come here at QJ.net in let,s say Januari 2007, i think it will be still the same fuzz an hype about a emulator that doesnt run any rom at a playable speed.
sounds sad but it,s the way it is.
All the time i see updates on qj.net about the n64 emu,s and what did it bring us ? It did bring us nothing.
the only thing happening is that everyone downloading the new updates is a potential betatester for the n64 crew.
ofcourse i wish em good luck to bring up a version that really work/is playable

On to the topic at hand, I think I will wait until it has sound before I try it out again. It is just a little annoying to play a game without sound, at least for me anyway. But much respect to the creator of this emu good work so far.

I think the way to speed these games up is to take advantage of the small resolution of the PSP and the fact that the emulator should not have to work that hard to run at full speed being the graphics displayed are smaller. Maybe if the games were shrunk before the graphics were displyed it would help, instead of downsizing it from its normal resolution on down, it should try to emulate them as they are. I tfind it funny that normal PSP games are very psp intensive but you don;t see them slowoing down, and the graphics are better than N64 many times over. Maybe they shyould try and simplify the emulator so it could run faster? Just my two cents.
