StrmnNrmn has released a new version of the hottest, and most anticipated emulator today. Daedalus R7 (Release 7) contains a nice speed increase over the previous version of R6 and also is the host to a new configuration system that will allow users to map the PSP buttons to the configuration/setup they have been dreaming of.

Many have complained that the PSP does not have enough buttons to emulate the Nintendo 64 console, but others like myself have pointed out that not all buttons are used in every game. So, if you are playing a game that have different layouts, you can easily change the configuration of the buttons before you start playing that game.

Aside from the button mapping feature, this new release features an average speed increase of 25-30% from the previous release. You can read the full change log below and see a video that I compiled of this new release. The video shows Super Mario 64 with tessellate large tris enabled and disabled. You will also see Mario Kart 64 which runs at 10fps in the game with large tris disabled (for performance). So, if you are like me and must have the latest, and the greatest emul

QJ i sent you a tip about this before strmnnrmn even had this on his blog, i was refeshing the sorceforge page over and over againh untill it came up, i was first to get the news and first to give you the news, i notified you before it was posted evn on strmnnrmn's blog so i think i shopuld have some credit for god sakes, its things like this that stop people from posting news to you, maby thats why your so slow, why dont you try showing some appriciation

YES! It's great to see this progression.

@17 It's cool that you want to help get the word about, but as far as credit goes: Get over it. You didn't make this emulator, so you really don't deserve credit for anything. They would have found out about this release with or without you.

@20, it was slow the first time I tried it but i refreshed and it was all good. @17, I agree, QJ has been guilty of this a few times. You should get credit.

If Strnmnnmn or whatever the hell his name is get this to 30fps with Sound, savegames and sleepmode. I would be completely happy. Infact, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and full speed.

» PSP to slow

I like all emulators, and I like the idea to emulate the Nintendo64. But also with this new release, the games are still too slow. And if the speed is optimized, what's about the sound? I think the PSP is too weak and to slow for an Nintendo64 Emulator... If it isn't, sorry my post... But anyway, good work and maybe next month, next release, will be faster and better?

» Completely great!

I've been trying various games, and Mario Kart 64 is simply great! It's one of the playable games, and you can actually complete races now. I'm getting a framerate of 10-12 during races, like 20-25 at the menu, and about 18 when you've paused it in a race. If it were let's say.. a framerate of 20 during races, then this would be totally hardcore.

» Nice but slow

Emulatores are fun but only when we can have full speed.

Like the Amiga 500 emulator, this one is VERY cool and I would like to see him running at full speed!

If N64 / Amiga 500 skip up to 1/4 - 1/3 of the frames and run at real time it would be great but 10-15fps games are just to annoying to be interesting...

I don´t think PSP is too slow for that, I just think it´s hard to program without SONY´s help.

Great Work... but dont release anything untill something is 100% playable

When a single rom is playable with 28~30 fps and has sound.

I dnl this and tried it out and noticed a huge increase when playing mario 64. Cant wait for it to run faster and have the textures work.

>>61

It takes time and progress to get a emulator to run almost perfect, none ever run truly perfect IMO, but thats why the maker puts out updates to the program every so often. No one, at least from what I have seen on the internet, can wait for someone to make a full speed emulator to come out, because they'll think it was a fake and never beleive its true.

Tried Mario64 with the 333 clock speed enabled both through CUstom Firmware and iR Shell (wouldn've tacked on Devhook 1.50FW|flash| with 33MHz additionaly but that seemed a bit like overkill) and the clock speeds during gameplay are identical to those reported for regular emulation (i.e. 9-11fps constant toping out at 15) seems StrmnNrmn has already integrated full clock speed beforehand.

Holy crap I've got to try this. Quest 64 isn't much of a wonderful game but for some reason I've always enjoyed playing it. I was so downed when my N64 mem card failed, but now I've been playing it on my new fast PC and I think I'll try it with this awesome emulator.

It is moments like these that Sony should really really just give in to homebrew, even if they don't make a dime off of it. Who cares, I'm a customer who bought a PSP, and this is what I want. The customers' wants are more important than those of big corporations.

Now if only we had a decent GBA emulator. But I do appreciate the work that has been done so far on both n64 emulation and gba emu on the PSP.

Actually, 30 frames is full speed. 60 frames would just make animation look slightly smoother.

» frames per second

Isn't 15 the bare minimum into tricking the eye into thinking that the animation is real movement? I would be happy with 20 fps and low quality sound but this so far is awesome.

I sure hope that Sony will learn to support homebrew when PSP-2 comes out. If not, then they can shove it somewhere. I want handheld, portable emulation of the systems I grew up with. I just got done testing Super Mario 64. I can't believe I'm seeing (fairly) beautiful N64 graphics being emulated on a little machine such as PSP. I mean, only 333 Mhz, this is incredible.

By the way, is it possible to go back to the rom list without restarting Daedalus? I was going to test Quest 64 but I didn't feel like relaunching the software. I gotta go to bed anyways. I still can't believe that I just played an emulated 3D gfx system (n64) on a little handheld gaming system. 1.5 + homebrew forever!.

Where is everyone getting these roms? I feel lame asking that but seriously..... if you would be so kind as to email me some or at least tell me where one would go about finding them, I would greatly appreciate that.

Wow! Is it just me, but do the demo'ed games (SM64 and MK64) ACTUALLY LOOK FREAKING PLAYABLE?!? Yes there is quite a ways for speed to go still and bugs to be removed, but this is the release I have been waiting for-a release where some games are playable!!!

PPL... NO PSP 2 will be comming out in the near future so get your head out your ass's plz psp and ps3 is going to be the dominate thing when it comes out and new firmware for the psp for more fun with the ps3 and there you have it and no the Sony mylo isnt the new psp..

And great job on your N64 Emulator i hope to see R8's and R9's to 10's in the future.

Basil, I had the same problem. And I fixed it by unzipping the rom before loading it to my psp.

30fps=not full speed.

29.97 fps is full speed for north american video. video games run at 60fps though.

» how sad...

that people are so bored of their expensive psps that they have to play 10 year old nintendo games at 10 fps just to amuse themselves. psp games suck that bad huh? lol

by DarkLink5607 - 2006-08-14 09:41
» awesome speed increase!

unless you're gay and/or have a firmware above 1.5, test the inside of the castle in super mario 64, it runs at 20fps with tesselate large triangles off! Very impressive speed! I can't wait to try out quest64! (dont think i like that game, i just read it was fast)

and to all you people who keep saying "blah blah i dont care until it's 60 frames per second" just STFU! If ur not interested in a psp qj.net news article (i'm not interested in 9/10 of them) just stfu and don't comment in it. As for me, i say keep chugging StrmnNrmn!

@135

Yes, most of the PSP games do suck. The N64 had some g reat games, this program allows us to play n64 ON THE GO. You can't carry a nintendo 64 in your pocket.

» StrmnNrmn is God-Like

StrmnNrmn you are a God Coder Amongst God Coders. People said it couldn't be done. Just show them different. Make all these lame ass DS users who come here and criticize your work EAT A BIG ONE. Your the man. You are part of a PSP revolution that will be talked about by your childrens childrens children. OK maybe not so exaggerated, but you get what I mean. Keep up the good work and kick some ass.

PS : To all the CoQ RyDinG newbs. Stay off this forum. You all make me sick when I hear u complaining. You all sound like a bunch of Hayeenas on PMS.

I Think Your Head Has Already Been your own ass, PS3 Sucks and it will remain the copycat system. This is just a heads up you no. So STFU and sop teasing ppl.

» I Agree With @96 & disagree with @126

As much as this guy works on this emulation, the project will never be perfect, it would only be great, not perfect. As you see the SNES emulator on the PSP is not perfect and was in the works for acouple years and is still alittle buggy. So you see if this project ever hit perfection, it would mean future gaming system would already be invented by then when the project is completed 100%. Remember this nothing is ever Perfect!
