Daedalus R6 Released |

UPDATE: One of our avid readers, Morgan, gave us a heads up on what StrmnNrmn has been doing. This time around, the developer has made some relevant improvements on the dynarec (dynamic recompiler). The amount of memory this is using has been decreased by approximately 10 to 12%, and the emulator's speed has been increased by around 7 to 10%. A bug that has been causing stability problems on PSPs using 1.0FW has also been fixed.
After the oh-so-many updates we have given you about speed improvement, graphical fixes, and its release date, finally the much-awaited build R6 for the Daedalus N64 Emulator for the PSP is released for your own downloading pleasure. StrmnNrmn has fulfilled his promise of releasing it today which was reported in our previous article about the emulator's progress.
If Daedalus seems like a foreign language to you, then you're in luck because we're here to hook you up with some info. Daedalus is a Nintendo64 emulator for Windows and PSP. Daedalus is named after the craftsman at King Minos' court who designed the labyrinth for the Minotaur. The good developer mentioned in the readme text that "this release of Daedalus for the PSP is currently in the very early stages of development. It is intended to show the potential for a N64 emulator on the PSP, but the current release has many missing features that make it far from usable. But Strmnnrmn believes that the following problems would be fixed in the coming versions:
- There is limited savegame support.
- There is no audio support.
- Not all the N64 controls can be used simultaneously.
- Many roms won't boot.
- Many roms have serious graphical glitches.
- Many roms have random lockups and crashes.
- Most roms run at a low framerate.
Changelog:
- Added over 50 new combiner modes
- Added support for c-buttons
- Load roms from ms0:N64 in addition to local roms directory
- Fixed backface culling issues
- Correctly implemented flipping to avoid flickering with certain roms
- Plugged memory leak in texture handling code, fixing various crashes
- Fixed issue which caused screenshot function to hang the emulator
Now StrmnNrmn is on a little bit of a bind since he has not yet decided on what to concentrate for R7 - will he be focusing on speed issues, compatibility problems, graphic fixes, or usability. He just released R6 and he is now thinking of R7. Wow, this guy's really amazing! So aside from telling us about R6, maybe you can give out your suggestions on what the good developer should give his attention to for R7. Tell us through your comments. For more info on the app, don't hesitate to read the readme.txt that comes with the downloads.

What happened? And yeah, this one is going pretty much the same speed, but hey, he's working on it :)

you're doing a great job on this. it's looking very promising, keep it up, the entire homebrew community respects what you're doing.
in regards to what to work on next, I am sure I speak with the majority of people here when I say framerate should be goal #1.
I don't care how pretty a game is if it runs at an unplayable speed. However, I would gladly play a game at a faster speed even if it were missing some textures/skins/etc.
Speed first, bells and whistles later.
Thanks,
Juggaleaux

Hope further work on this emulator continues smoothly. If your looking for something to work on, try to get Zelda: Ocarina of time to work smoothly. This way many speed issues and graphical issues can be tackled at the same time, and of course everyone will love you (even more) for it!!!
Thanks again.

I'm not even that interested anymore because of the
minor improvement everytime it is released.
I mean I respect all the work that is been done so far,
But it's still disappointing.
By the way what happened to monkey?
And the 3 roms specified emu?

Now to my point, its developers like StrmnNrmn who really make the psp scene worth being a part of, and it gives us something to look forward to, but what really pisses me off, is the FULL SPEED N64 EMULATOR which qj.net were so sure was real that they would BET there entire REPUTATION on it. The fact that they had it as front page news alongside all the other worthy developments makes it even more frustrating. This fake development which everybody could see is a 'fake' (like night and day) had a huge news post on a site like this which sort of brought a slight hope to people that it may be possible, why else would qj post it.... well, my gut feeling was right, it was a a fake to get people all rattled in their cages and qj was starved for attention. Why else post something as bogus as this when time and time again we have been duped into vapourware like this N64 TAT which brings praise to these H0axerz and less to real developers like psmonkey and StrmnNrmn. Heres these two developers coding away trying their utmost best to further their developments for the community, but then you got THIS site who posts up crap about someone claiming to have a better app then these two devs which makes their work obsolete (Full speed emu instead of real working tested WIP emu) and all this without an ounce of evidence. WHAAAAA, what is this world comming to when people get frontpage news without even doing anything, and on a site like qj.net...which i have to point out, i have lost ALL respect for.
This is absolutly ridiculous that we, the readers (what make one half of the blog a success), have to take in this garbage and then the utter disrespect towards the developers (which makes the other half of the blog a success). Such discontent for both readers and developers alike, it makes you wonder why nobody else is questioning qj.nets reliability, because from where i stand, qj.net is not worthy of making news posts, what i dont get is the people writing the posts should really thing long and hard before pressing that submit story button, but something like that news post about full speed n64 emu isnt really something you have to think long and hard about, if in doubt, reply back to the developer claiming this and ask for some proof, don't settle for 'i give you my word' or any other lame excuse, becuase you know its only going to bite you in the arse, someone like me is bound to question the validity of this site.
I don't know about you guys but i think this is damn right unreasonable to be fed this garbage, i mean how many of you come to qj.net to get bogus news, if i wanted bogus news i would go to shoutwire, but i come to here to get my daily fix of psp NEWS and latest DEVELOPMENTS, not talk about a supposed full speed n64 emulator, which if you really had half a brain, would realise that this is impossible especially this early in time.
I myself regard this as abuse of the readers as all they are doing is getting people who they call its readers, all worked up, and for what? for nothing, thats what.
But enough of my ranting, i hope you people wake up and shout your opinions on this matter too. I would like to thank StrmnNrmn for all his efforts, especially for continuing his work even after reading bogus claims backed by none other then pspupdates, these developers are what make this scene interesting, not fake self proclaimed developers with not an ounce of proof and stupid excuses.
Love to hear your comments on that people. Thanks for reading.
Your friendly neighborhood Mogungo

StrmnNrmn has informed us that he will be updating his Daedalus N64 emulator by bringing out build R6 hopefully tomorrow. Here's what he said: "I've spent the last couple of days polishing a number of graphical issues and I need to set myself a target date otherwise I'll just keep tinkering for ages. I'll have a longer post tomorrow with details of the changes that have made it into R6."
StrmnNrmn has also answered a few questions that were left after his last update. Here's the information we have obtained from StrmnNrmn answering user questions:
* There will be a minor speed increase as a side-effect of fixing the memory leak, but probably nothing noticeable. It's mostly a graphical update
* The screenshot glitch has been fixed (it was getting in an infinite loop trying to create the directory for the screenshots on the memory stick)
* Screen flickering has been fixed
You can look forward to all this and more graphical updates soon, hopefully tomorrow; so stay tuned to PSPUpdates!
Thanks for the tip Morgan!

now, where did it say it was going to be "FULL SPEED N64 EMULATOR which qj.net were so sure was real?" unless i misread that news update, then i am wrong. or you're referring to something else?

you people prolly all want a full working n64 emu, right? now, what do you do? well, you don't say "it's frigging lame" or anything of that sort coz that might discourage StrmnNrmn even a little.
seriously, how old are you?

Nintendo 64 UltraHLE Emulator Alpha Teaser: Full Speed Mario, Zelda, and Goldeneye
Posted Jul 01, 2006 at 05:51PM by Jamie M.
Listed in: Homebrew Emulators, News, Nintendo 64
Tags: Mario, Zelda, Nintendo 64, ROM, ZoMbi146, UltraHLE
Well as if the 2.5 / 2.6 Downgrader wasn't big enough news for one weekend, upon checking my email today I noticed an update from longtime GBA developer and reader ZoMbi146. We have been in contact over the last few days and just today I received two brand spanking new teaser shots from ZoMbi146's new Nintendo 64 Emulator.
Work on this emulator which is based on the UltraHLE engine, has been going on for some time. It appears now the emulator will be split into separate eboots that are hard coded for specific roms. For example Mario64 and Zelda would not use the exact same loader. What this allows is for the emulator to be specifically tweaked to run the specific game at the best possible speed, sound and compatibility. A current available and rather general example would be SnesTYL switching graphic modes.
In addition "each version would have special tweaks with optimizations that would make each appropriate rom run correctly at full speed with sound." The games that are currently working in this method are Mario 64, Zelda OOT, and Goldeneye 64.
Just on a side note, the Nintendo 64 was a good platform and did have quite a few games. One of the things that made the system suffer, however, was a rather difficult programming interface. For these games to play very well, or in this case at full speed, is quite an amazing feat.
Not sure about you but I look forward to hearing more from Zombi146 in the coming days. Until then we will be standing on our heads and drooling from the mouth (yuck) as we await the reawakening of Mario 64, Zelda OOT, and Goldeneye on the PSP. Nice work ZoMbi146, nice work!
i think this is a load of shyt..and i dnot' know y ppl like to raise the readers hopes like this... its sad...

in 4 to 6 months or more when hes done this Mammoth coding project for everyone else, you're all going to be playing it and praising his name. so have some *****ing patience and quit discouraging the someone whos trying to bring N64 gaming onto the psp.
anyway, If strmnnrmn actually takes any of these comments seriously, hopefully its the positive ones. He IS doint a pretty damn good job after all.

on how the maped them out but one suggestion that it think would be alot better is insted of holding the circle for the d pad you could hold it for the c buttons cuzz the d pad is probably used more or maby not it depends on the game your playing

Seriously, why is ZoMbi146 being let off the hook by PSP Updates? These attention whores lying about emulators need to be chastised by the public and have their reputations ruined. The bastard even posted photos of his psp supposedly running it, he planned the entire thing out. He embarassed PSP Updates and he disrespected true developpers like StrmnNrmn by pulling that stunt.
He owes us an apology
Reply
PSP Updates really needs to clear the air about their post on ZoMbi146's fake full speed emulator since they made it seem like we can trust that guy. If we dont get a news update by QJ then decent developers like Strmn are going to keep getting this crap everytime he updates the emulator.

I think I speek for everyone when I say at least a 10 fps increase should be your main priority for R7

You have a responsibility to update people about the supposed "full speed emulator" so that real emulators dont get compared to fake ones with insane expectations.
It was obvious that a full speed n64 emulator that was simply "designed for a specific game" was fake, but you made it seem like Zombi was a trusted developer and that he couldnt be lying. Now we have all these newbies expecting StrmnNrmn to come out with a full speed emulator too.

For speed to be increased the code must be optimized, now why would anyone want to waste time optimizing code that isn't complete or working properly yet? I wouldn't....
You people should be happy with whatever releases these developers feel fit to let you have!
Hell, it's not like you're paying for them...

But what we'd really like is an emulator that has sound and at least 40FPS, in-game. Graphics are not an issue, as long as they are not INVISIBLE.

"It is intended to show the potential for a N64 emulator on the PSP, but the current release has many missing features that make it far from usable."

Go wait for your 12th birthday kiddo and stay the ***** off the net. Its funny how many people think there clever for posting crap in the comments. The N64 is a hard system to emulate d1ckwads, thats why its taking time to get up to speed. I gues EVERY SINGLE *****1NG EMULATOR should have been ditched for not running full speed right away. EVERY PIECE OF HOMEBREW SHOULD HAVE BEEN DITCHED for not doing everything right on the first few releases.
S0dding retards, grow a brain, learn to spell, get some mates, learn social skills, realise that mouthing off on the internet isnt big or clever and your attitude will probably either earn you several beatings throughout your life, no girlfriend/wife, no job because you wont even be able to spell right on the application form. Enjoy your sh1tty little sad life mouthing off on comment sections hiding behind the internet like a real big man.
Strmnnrmn, keep it up mate. Great job! (I say great job because no-one else is even bothering to work on a N64 emu an Im gratefull someone is, get that you retards? No-one else is doing jack all so give it a rest)

First off....
Do you see that R before the 6? It isn't a final version, just a release of the "work in progress". This is simply to show how its going, and let people tinker, and test the program.
You will NOT get full speed, and honestly if you were expecting it please get off the internet....you don't deserve to use it.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to code an N64 emulator? Nevertheless get it working on a 333mhz processor, with 32MB ram...
Not to mention not even a standard PC...
This is an achievement that would not only be amazing not only for the PSP scene, but all homebrew scenes.
Most people thought the PSP wouldn't even have enough power to be doing what it's doing right now...
Many thanks to StrmnNrmn for his hard work, and also picking up probably the hardest programing task (when it comes to homebrew).
Can't wait to see the progress in your next build!

I sure don't know how to do it, but if only 1 person out of hundreds of homebrew developers is trying to accomplish it, it sure as hell it can't be easy. You guys are those spoiled 12 year-old kids that have everything they want. You don't have a full-speed emu? Then let's go yell at the creator so he does it quick! Heck, If I were in his position, I'd probably give up with all these crappy people shouting saying how my work sucks. Of course, there's the other population, the minor part of people that tries to support the developer and not bring him down. The only reason I'd keep working would be for these individuals.
Grow up, get a life, stop being a spoiled brat.

I'm sorry (most of) you guys don't understand how programming languages work but they work the same way any language is written; If you change the ending, you'll need to go back and change the beginning so you start by changing the beginning, which in programming an emulator is making sure the graphics works and the core doesn't have any exceptions, or at the very least a minimal amount.
To whom it may concern: I apologize for the language but the sheer ignorance in the majority of comments in this article is rediculous. You don't bash something you get for free from someone else's dedication of their free time. Hell, you don't bash something you don't even have any understanding of. You say "its slow, im a programmer and i could do better" well I don't see you giving any goddam advice worth a sh1t. Do everyone a favor and shut the ***** up if all you're going to do is whine like a little b1tch.

I can't believe how completely and utterly ignorant and selfish the majority of QJ.Net readers are. You're literally taking your own oblivion and ineptitude and somehow converting it into the fault of QJ.net developers and authors just because you think it's reasonable that you're asking for instant, cost-free gratification on your PSP. If anything, the fact that we are even playing homebrew on our PSPs is a PRIVELEGE courtesy of the homebrew creators AND the distributive help of QJ.net.
Strmnrmn, I want to thank you GREATLY for all your hard work on the emulator. You give me something to do on my lunch breaks, which is play through Mario 64. You say it's far from usuable, but I've already got three stars and access to nearly all the castle levels now thanks to your new savegame feature. You keep doin what you're doin and you're going to be famous for an emulator of this quality. Don't let all these pre-teen idiots get you down, it's the ignorant majority unfortunately that speaks for us, because all the smart people are tapping away at their PSPs playing your emulator :)
Looking forward to R7!
