Daedalus

StrmnNrmn has informed us that he will be updating his Daedalus N64 emulator by bringing out build R6 hopefully tomorrow. Here's what he said: "I've spent the last couple of days polishing a number of graphical issues and I need to set myself a target date otherwise I'll just keep tinkering for ages. I'll have a longer post tomorrow with details of the changes that have made it into R6."

StrmnNrmn has also answered a few questions that were left after his last update. Here's the information we have obtained from StrmnNrmn answering user questions:
  • There will be a minor speed increase as a side-effect of fixing the memory leak, but probably nothing noticeable. It's mostly a graphical update
  • The screenshot glitch has been fixed (it was getting in an infinite loop trying to create the directory for the screenshots on the memory stick)
  • Screen flickering has been fixed
You can look forward to all this and more graphical updates soon, hopefully tomorrow; so stay tuned to PSPUpdates!

Thanks for the tip Morgan!

Great job to Strmm, whos managing to get N64 games running AT ALL on a PSP, I heard people saying it was impossible months ago. So stop your *****ing about "omg i need sound / omg we need faster speed not better graphics" and just congratulate the man on doing what is infact a very grand task of making your an emulator, so you can all play your zelda games on your psp like youve been moaning that you want to do for so damn long >.<

Nintendo 64 uses a 93 MHz NEC CPU, it has been said as a general rule by emulator coders that it's needed about 7 times more CPU power from a system to emulate at full speed a target system.

93 mhz is like 1 vs 3 cycle headroom to the psp in emulating such system... so cmon, wont be happening anytime soon.

So please dont be ridiculous and stop MOANING, unless ultra-efficient recompilation (note extra memory requeriments...), NEVER expect a N64 run at full speed in a PSP.

Enough good job already did the guy.

Wrong statement, a PSP is mostly an upgraded / revised version of the PS1 based in common hardware, so emulation should be straightforward and not difficult to accomplish.

Anyway, we have still to see such emulator.

When will people get it through their heads that there is no planned PS1 emulator. SONY is porting their PS1 titles, not emulating. They'll run from the XMB, in their own eboot.pbp's, specially coded to run on the PSP. SONY still has all the source for their PS1 games, so all it is is re-wrting the code to use PSP hardware, not PS1 hardware.

And dissing this sceene..? No respect for those working on what you love man... you should go and buy your little DS.

Thats good news on the emulater. now im wondering with the new custom firmware starting to emerge and devhook as well if firmwares will be deisgn to boot snes/megadrive/n64 games directly eliminating the need for emulaters.

say devhook was modifed to boot up as a snes bios instead. then in theory you should be able to run snes roms with out any issue the same could go for n64 roms.

i know the work done on the snes emulaters and genesis are great work and im not discrediting them. just thinking of the future of firmwares.

Obviously i am not a programer. However logically if you can emulate say SNES games using a emulater which is running off the psp bios, then with a knowledge of how the emulater and psp bios work then one may able to apply the emulater into the bios.

this would mean more power for running the roms because instead of having the bios behind the emulater, you would just have a bios running the roms

Also with sony's ps1 emulater coming out. they maybe using the same method. changing the firmware in order to be able to read and load ps1 data. if that is the case it would be only a matter of time before someone hacked the firmware, understands how the implementation has worked and substitue how to run ps1 for n64 or whatever.

Some of you are so dumb, R6 doesn't just have graphical fixes it also has the memory fix which will allow us to play MANY games now. And then you say well some of the old games that crashed you couldn't see the screen because it was all purple and whatever. Well now some of those games should have better graphics and they won't crash due to the memory fix. This is opening the door to alot of great things to come, and THE ONLY REASON THIS ARTICLE IS HERE IS BECAUSE OF ME TIPPING QJ THAT DAEDALUS SITE HAS UPDATED. If you look at the bottom of this article it says thanks for the tip Morgan, so obviously they didn't copy and paste anything from dcemu. If you don't beleive me ask qj to check this ip and the one I tipped them with. They'll be the same because I told them they didn't copy and paste from anywhere.

Hello there #74. PSdonkey IS working with StrmnNrmn! StrmnNrmn already said so in his previous blog. PSdonkey has already done alot to help out StrmnNrmn with his work also. PSdonkey has made a better menu and menu music for daedalus emulator. PSdonkey has also changed the eboot background and sound as well and Strmnrnmn said he was looking foward to seeing PSdonkey help him out with increasing the speed of his emualtor in his next build. Try to get your facts straight before you go bashing these coders who deserve respect. If you think you can do better, then take this C++ tutorial made by PSdonkey and try to make an emulator yourself. Here ya go #74

108 make a 360 emu that runs at .2 fps, dam i don't care if it runs at .1! then you can have all the rights to talk **** about this so til then stfu. anyway i like the way this is looking, he gives us updates on things that need to be done. in this patch it fixed the bug that made it just close down, i hated that when i was done with the first world it would just stop, next patch should be a speed up (if it gets fast enough he will add sound) expect atleast 1 big speed up patch or 2 smaller ones before the sound patch (smaller as in the one we got in R4)

No one needs your negative comments. People these days are lazy *****s. If you think it sucks than don't use it, and ***** off.

The PSP has like 32megabytes of RAM. How fast I'm not sure, so the PSP possibly could emu the N64 at 7/8ths of its actual speed. (The last figure was pulled out of my ass, so really I'm not sure) But just give these dev's a break, their persistence and ingenuity should be praised rather than insulted!
