Daedalus

Well, the wheel was set rolling on 1st May with the first release of Daedalus. And the juggernaut has been going on and getting stronger with every release. Now we have the 4th release of the N64 Emulator, and it's better than ever.

Here's a changelog:

[!] Disable PSP FPU exceptions, enabling many more roms to run.
[!] Fixed ambient lighting bug.
[!] Fixed scissoring.
[~] Only create temp rom file if compressed (not swapped).
[~] Fixed decaling offset.
[~] Lots of combiner additions/fixes.

Although the changelog is quite small, StrmnNrmn believes that it will help compatibility. He also promised that he'll optimise the code so that it's faster. That'll be in the next update, though. The single archive contains the 1.0 and 1.5 versions, plus the source code.

Thanks for the heads-up Billy!

I've had a chance to test Zelda Ocarina of Time. It ran well albeit slow, I can't wait to see how this emulator progresses in the future. It's a great achievement.

Zelda ocarina of time works now albeit very slowly but for this emu to only be a little over a week old this is some great progress. Also Mario 64 is a little faster and the graphical glitches are gone. When this is running at a good speed with sound and save support I don't think I will be buying any new PSP games except for maybe the new Ratchet and Clank game but that is coming out NEXT YEAR.

First you will have to get the source code for the GBA emulator. I think it is posted in the downloads section of this site. Because since the author gave up on it he released it so others could try and improve on it. Then you can go to psp-programming.com there was a post about it earlier and read the tutorals it is designed for just what you are asking.

we should start thinking about the controls, and how to work them on games that almost use every button like no mercy, well i thaught:

B: square

A: cross

Z: L

L: triangle

R: R

Joystick: nub

(select can switch nub to 64pad)

c: psp pad

any other ideas?

The N64 controller has 14 buttons plus an analog joystick. The PSP has 10 buttons plus a joystick. I really wonder how there going to set this up my guess is the dpad will become the c buttons because there used more often and hopefully a shift button will be created. Im sure the'll figure this all out im more worried about save states and decent FPS :)

You are wrong about the psp button thing.

Including start and select and the music symbol it has

13 not including nub.

But if you also include the music connector that goes in under the nub, then it will also increase (I think this was done in quake 2)

PSP | 64

Dpad C buttons

Circle Shift

Shift+Dpad Dpad

L L

R Z

Triangle R

Square A

Cross B

Start Start

Then include an option in the emulator options that makes it so you can change the PSP Dpad to be the 64 Dpad, and shift + Dpad = C buttons. That way if there's a game like... tetrisphere, for example... You wonb't have to keep the shift button pressed down the entire time.

mario kart 64 runs very well and fast without many glitches though its still slow, its ingame for 1 to 2 minutes before it crashes but besides lag a strange kart glitch which you have to see for yourself and poor framerate this will obviously be one of the first games to be fully or at least partially emulated on the emu, the coder did a damn good improvement can anyone tell me where i can send donations to :)

Playing Mario Kart at full speed as its meant to be played.

Although this is properly the greatest release in a while you still cant beat WiFi Mario Kart or Super Mario 64 DS.

Cant wait for Goldeneye though since chances of that been ported to DS are slim since everyone has their hand in the goldeneye pie.

I know everybody is saying its faster and all that but how much faster exactly in terms of fps? And since the graphics are fixed for Mario but some games still have stupid graphics like rush. Why is that?

Can anyone tell me how fast mario kart and starfox is? I'd like to play those. Goldeneye too. And because Zelda is so big, is it much slower than Mario and does it crash?

I hope someone can answer all my questions. Great job and thank you to the N64 team!

So regarding sound, the speed couldn't get any better by using the ME for it. Makes sense?

Why does everyone keep suggesting the Dpad for all of the C Buttons? That would be crap for almost any game, especially those that require using the stick and C Buttons at the same time. This is how the controls should map out to for optimal play.

N64:PSP

R: R

L: Optional to map to L

Pad: Optional to map to pad

Stick: Stick

B: Square

A: Cross

LeftC: Triangle

BottomC: Circle

Z: Default on L

Other C buttons: Default on pad

Start should be obvious, and leave select for a menu. As you can see, it's basically the same thing used for OOT/MQ on gamecube, which I found worked perfectly for the game. The pad and L button are used so little, that it's best to leave them as an option to map to.

Just for anyone else who gets the same problem, I noticed that when I used Mario 64 verified dump (E) there was no text on any signposts or boxes. When I tried Mario 64 (U) version this worked ok and I could see the text again. This did not occur on the previous build. Apart from that all I can say is wow, another great release with progress made. I am just about to try Zelda and can't wait!!

PSP Remote- =(Right C) (+)= (Top C) (-)=(Botttom C)

[_] = A

X = B

/\ = Z

L = L

R = R

O = Start

D-Pad = Directional N64 buttons

Analog Stick = Nub

I dunt care what anyone says, the best buttons are....

N64 - PSP

(O can b used as the shift)

B - Square

A - X

L - L

R - Triangle

Z - R

C pad - D pad

Start - Start

Analog - Nub

This is the best system because in zelda, mario and GoldenEye, you will have to use the Z button at the same tyme as the A or C buttons. Dis means the Z button must be a shoulder button (L or R)!!

This is a SIK emulator, ive completed Zelda 12 times from when it came out to the year 1999.

Download Tool64 (google it, it's easy to get) and convert roms to little endian or whatever in that. No more converting in the program.

And to those that are expecting some goldeneye action, dream on. Not going to happen.

Hey thanks for this great update Strmn Nrmn. Eeryone says you are really donkey, and that is cool with me. Thanks donkey for your hard work and continued dedication to this project. Believe me, monkey is pissing in his pants right now because he got PAWNED so many times by you. I hope monkey now goes back to the zoo where he belongs because we have you and we don't want monkey here anymore. thanks again donkey!

U sir are an idiot. Have you ever played ridge racer? The graphics are awsome. If I had to compare the PSP's graphics to any console I would have to say Dreamcast by far (way better than PSX and N64). LOOK @ RIDGE RACER FOR PSP THEN @ RIDGE RACER 64!!!!! RIDGE RACER 64 LOOKS LIKE S#!T COMPARED TO IT!!!! SYPHON FILTER DARK MIRROR VS. SYPHON FILTER 3!!!!also the psp's screen resolution BLOWS compared to most tv's and PC screens, so that limits mst of the graphics that developers have to work with. seriously, I'd have to say the 2 N64 games w/ the best graphics are Perect DArk, and Donkey Kong 64 (the lighting effects and so on) and I know for a fact that ridge eacer def kicks PD's collective AS$ and JAK def looks atleast on par w/ DK64. ALSO look at budokai and viewtiful joe!! N64 hardware def IS NOT capable of cell shading!!! u are a joke go bak to sleep...

U ppl (some of u ppl anyway, probly newbs) dont even know WTF u r talking about. most of these words come from FPS multiplayer lingo. . .

Anyone obove those firmwares are lying s.o.b's.

It wont work on 2.0+, it's mainly for 2.5 and below users. I fell sorry for 2.0+ people who arent enjoying the latest hombrews. Good day.

People like #91 and #117 haven't even touched a PSP before. How can someone compare games like Daxter, Midnight Club 3, GTA:LCS, Syphon Filter, Ridge Racer, NFS:UR, and Burnout Legends to the quality of a PS1 or Gameboy? Easy: they're a complete moron who hasn't played a single one. I hope for those posters' sakes there's some sort of absurd sarcasm going on here.

Reading the posts on PSPUpdates is like being strapped into a perpetual mind-numbing machine. My IQ has dropped several points just by participating.

Shucks, my jaw has slackened and I'm drooling upon myself. Ha-yuck.

# To #120Guest 2006-05-06 10:28
Hey #120, this is how it works. Monkey is the one who always talks and brags about his emualtor but has never given us a build of it. All monkey did was post stupid screenshots and talked all day about how his emulator is all that but he just jerked us around and never gave us his emulator. Donkey has released his ultimate64 emualtor to a few beta testers at psp-hacks.com but decided to go back to his original name of StrmnNrmn because of all the flaming he got with the Donkey name. Even though StrmnNrmn wrote in his readme file that he is not Donkey, we all know that StrmnNrmn is donkey but doesn't want everyone to know that because he doesn't want everyone flaming him. It is all over all the fourms that StrmnNrmn is really Donky and you can even tell for yourself by watching the videos that Donkey released earlier and compare them to StrmnNrmn's emulator right now and they look exactly the same. So monkey = moron and Donkey = StrmnNrmn. I hope that clears it all up for you #120

http://dl.qj.net/Monkey-64-PSP-Emulators/pg/12/fid/5275/catid/330

It's his alpha release from March; download it. It runs hombrew ROMs but he DID make a release. Just wanted to clear that up. At the moment, only beta testers have access to latest releases..

I think it's great that we have several projects on the go. I just hate these propaganda style hatred posts that are tied with the N64 emulator. It's only an emulator after all...

I love psp but i just wanna share this with you all. think about it. the gba took a long tim to make it alot faster and its not even that fast yet. but n64 emu for psp at this pace?? weird?? sony sony sony.

Did any of you guys notice the difference between playing Mario Kart using the emulator and the kid playing Mario Kart on the video? Is that not a slight hint that the two are clearly not related? There was no ROM loading (miniscule) and for some reason there was sound. Stop being dumb+++es about this and look at the facts.

i agree w/ #102. you never really use the r button. theres proly ganna be somethin where you can edit the controls for the emulator sooner or later.

also if anyone was needed to know, (correct me if im wrong

) you dont need the irshell to overclock the emulator. you can overclock in the cheat device and then load up the eloader.

great work on emulator thogh. i already **** myself.

i dont feel like dling a new emulator every few days, but once strmnnrmn starts adding major features like SOUND and save support, maybe even a speed control, I might start getting every update. Anyway, I dont have room on my memory stick for this right now, as I have a movie and PSP Revolution on there.

PS i wish i had never updated to 1.51 all those months ago... and then broke my psp only to get it replaced with a 2.01... 1.0 is the best!

The reason you need GTA for the eBoot loader is because the only way you can run h'brew on 2.01+ is by using the savegame exploit. 2.01+ doesn't allow access to flash0:/ so you have to use user mode, not kernel mode - which is why alot of h'brew actually isn't supported on 2.01+ (at least at a usable level - alot of it is "compatible", that is it'll load but not be usable at any decent level.

There doesn't look like there'll ever be a non-GTA related exploit for homebrew. If there is, I'll jump on it, but I doubt there will be, the same as for a downgrader for 2.01+; flash0 access is blocked by sony from everything that's 2.01 and above (the bastards :P)
