Another Daedalus Build Coming Next Week or Early July, says StrmnNrmn

DaedalusAfter giving us all the latest build to his now popular Nintendo 64 emulator Daedalus, StrmnNrmn took a much needed break from the development scene and went to Barcelona, Spain. But StrmnNrmn's heart must really be into delivering us a better N64 emulator as fast as he can because just coming back from the vacation, he's giving word that he'll "have something ready by the end of next week, or early July".

The next release of Daedalus will tackle a bunch of graphical issues like "adding new combine modes to fix various pink+black textures" among others. Since StrmnNrmn suspects that stability problems related to operating the emulator with dynarec for an extended period of time are caused by the memory running low, he is looking into reducing memory requirements for the coming build. This plan can also improve the Expansion Pak support, says the author.

Time willing, StrmnNrmn promises to look into adding support for configuring the controls on a rom by rom basis. Also up for the coming build is an improvement on the savegame support.

Moving away from the upcoming Daedalus build, StrmnNrmn also highlighted in his blog some clarifications on his issue with PSDonkey. Just before he released his latest Daedalus build, StrmnNrmn received a comment by PSDonkey saying, "I went ahead and compiled the new source for everyone and also added a couple of minor changes to the source for speed improvements."

Having read this, the Daedalus author went into "a bit of a Hulk rage" (his own words) and wrote in his blog that he "[suspects] PSdonkey might simply have been attempting to take partial credit for several weeks development work".

PSDonkey however came clean and made a clarification. He says,

"About the pre R5 build that I made. Yes I did change a couple of minor things in the source code and things seemed to run a tad bit better. However, after reviewing your updated R5 release, none of the changes that I made in the other build had any effect in this new R5 build that you released. In fact most of what I did was clean up some of the excess code and I can see that you already did this in your R5 release."

Having read this, StrmnNrmn extended his apologies and even invited PSDonkey to drop him an email so they can "talk about the possibility adding [PSDonkey] as a contributor on sourceforge".

And that's all StrmnNrmn has for us this week. I bet the coming days will again be nerve-wracking for all of us whose already excited about the prospect of yet another amazing build of the Daedalus. Keep up the good work, StrmnNrmn!

its not like this is the final version or anything; there's still plenty of room for improvement and optimization

what i'd really like to see is a DS emulator ;p

by Annoymous Coward - 2006-06-23 02:36
» Lets get real

Take a look at the Snes TYL Port and how much optimisations and hard work has gone into it. Most of the games are now either playable, full speed or very close but compare the specs of Snes to the N64 and consider the difference with 2D vs 3D.

If we are realistic, I think N64 will never get to a playable rate, there might be a few less graphically intensive games that will play at a decent speed but apart from that, I do not have very high hopes. Of course I hope I will be proved wrong. I think we all need to stop dreaming and simply be as realistic as possible.

don't mean u, anonymous coward, but the following ppl are spoiled f*cking babies: #2, 6, and 10. Wow, i really hate seeing such comments on homebrew. They're doing it FOR FREE morons!! How could u sit there and type these angry comments?! As i say lots of times, i'd like to see u code something better urself

to #13's post, yeah it's possible to get a ds emulator, more so than n64, because the ds's graphics SUCK (i can complain about payware). i've noticed that there are pretty much ZERO lighting effects, generally poor video hardware, and a pathetic screen resolution of 256x192 pixels on each screen. Its processors run at 67 and 33 mhz. Pretty lame! The N64 ran at around 97 mhz, compared to the ds. If someone were to try as hard as StrmnNrmn on it, they could at least run ds homebrew at a good speed pretty early in development

to #13, i think good emulation will eventually happen. 30 fps is all i ask because it'd still be enjoyable. StrmnNrmn has proven to be a pretty talented developer, despite his n00by status on sourceforge. He sounds pretty smart when he posts these progress reports, and look what he's developing, an N64 emulator on PSP!! I think ppl should stop yelling at him and instead support him as he works his way to his ultimate goal of good N64 emulation

by Domino - 2006-06-23 03:24
» #15

Id love to see a DS emulator, not to actually play it but just as a concept idea. Though the double screen effect would be impossible in some ways, would be something to see.

As for the N64 emulator grats on all who are working on it, just the thought of running mario 64 on the psp is funny to me

by Hess - 2006-06-23 05:35
» No 20fps

He's working on graphical stuff, save, and controls I don't think any of those things will make the emulator run any faster. Maybe a little smoother and mor polished but not faster and especially not a jump to 20fps.

He needs to get working on his because i think his is the only one that could actually get to a decent fps.

I like the improvements, but I have a Q. I am able to play trhough Mario for about 2 minutes before it freezes, something that wasn't happening in previous versions. Is it just me or anyone else is having the same problem.

I couldn't even reach the first start and with previous releases I went through 4 stars without any problem.

Kee up the cool work, it's looking great.

To everyone who actually thinks this will run smoothly is a retard. Hello the friggin SNES doesnt run at full speed and its been over a year since it was released. dont make *****ing uneducated comments. you dont even know what the HELL you are talking about. Give this emulator 4 months and it will be near perfect. so stop with your *****ing retarded comments its not worth your time because people like you have no clue what the hell they are talking about.

to #40: i have the same problem with mario 64. i can never save cause it freezes in the middle of the bob-omb king boss fight. I'm no expert, but i think what's happening is an "exception." Something happened with the game that the emulator's code didn't recognize. I learned that from my past experiences modding the PC version of Halo. The solution? Go back to the older releases and hope it's better in the next version

and #41 and everyone who doesn't believe good emulation will happen, i think it will. The SNES emulator is actually pretty fast running most games, and even i know that a year isn't that much time for software development, let alone the couple of months we've been hearing about this emulator! I say again, stop attacking StrmnNrmn and being so pessimistic. Look at how quickly Corn runs on crappy systems. (sure it supports about 3 games, but that emulator still gives me hope for the psp)

ds emulation is very possible, at least for homebrew. As i said, it has horrible system specs. To emulate the bottom screen, all u need is a joystick cursor and a "touch" button, but i'll admit that it's better with a mouse. The only way to fit both screens is tilted on their side, so u'd have to tilt the psp to play. But it's possible!

and yes, the next version may be faster because it says he's "reducing memory requirements"

by Naruto - 2006-06-24 07:14
» ***** all yall hataz

man strmnNrmn is da ***** man yall bittches cant even get to his level he made an emulator that most peeple thot would be impossible on psp i wouldnt be suprised if he got to 30fps wit sound. this *****a is incredible besides its a 1 man army ofcourse its guna take a wile but still hell get thrroo it. In my opinion u shuld hook up wit psdonkey both of u have good experiance in creating and coding a n64 emulator but it all boils down to hoo gets the credit if psdonkey doesent wrk wit strmnnrmn then hell evantually abonadan the the whole donkey 64 project becuzz it sems as if he cant do it by himself

» these morons...

Why are these people commenting without fully reading the article?

People who are still flaming PSMonkey, wtf is your problem? They are working together now, sharing ideas and whatnot...

I'd like to see some of you try and make a n64 emulator work on such a limited system.

I also agree that this MAY be a lost cause, considering n64 emulators for the most part still dont run at full speed on PC.

I really hope StrmnNrmn and PSMonkey can bring this emulator to a somewhat playable level. Perhaps even with sound.

btw, hide unregistered posts, those guys are morons for the most part.
