Announcing NEOGEO Emulator for PSP Beta 2 |
The guys of the NeoGeo Emulator for PSP has just released an updated beta for the application. Now, you can get the NEOGEO Emulator for PSP beta 2, roughly nine days after releasing the first Beta for this new emulator that they are working on.Although this emulator is still a diamond in the rough, surely the emulator guys are busy fixing up bugs and amping their emulator's features so as to give a really great gaming experience to the future users of this homebrew emulator.
And since these guys are really miracle workers, it won't be surprising if they'll be able to perfect this one. So with that, let me say that as always your constructive observations, criticisms, and suggestions would be a great deal of help. For now, let's go over the changelog which was tirelessly translated by QJ's very own, Jeff C.
Changelog for NEOGEO Emulator for PSP beta 2:
- Games that were unable to start before can now be started with sound turned off. The ROM converter is no longer needed. Yet, the game is still far from playable due to the slow speed. Now, I'm not planning to make these games playable with sound on at all.
- With the above change, the ROM Converter is updated. Encrypted ROMs are required to be converted. Small-sized games are also supported by the converter. Due to the problem that the file selection dialog doesn't show up in Windows 9X, I've moved to use the VC6 compiler. Moreover, you can now drag & drop zip files onto romcnv.exe to get it converted.
- Bugs in CZ80 confirmed, so I changed to MAME Z80. I will use CZ80 again once it's fixed.
- Timer processing changed. With this change, Cross Swords and some other games that suffered major framerate drop is now back to normal.
- Sound processing changed, and the problem that the BGM was played slower than it should be is now fixed. There may be cases that the tempo slows down, but it is limited to the level that it doesn't interfere with the gameplay. Due to the lack of time, a fix from the bottom will be done later.
- The saving format of SRAM is now the same with MAME. With this change, old files are all deleted. Also, if the BIOS is changed, the SRAM files will all be deleted too.
- Functions used for sound debug is now revamped into a sound test function. However, since this is a very simple function, you can do nothing more than selecting a BGM and play. You can select the game you want in the file browser, then press Square button to proceed.
Circle: Play the selected track number
Cross: Stop the current playing track
Triangle: Exit sound test
L Trigger: Change the PSP clock (default 333MHz)
R Trigger: Show help inf
-The music folder added in this version contains the list for music playback. The English version of the list is in the music/en folder.
-If a Japanese list is present, it will be used by default.
-If no list can be found, music/default.lst will be used by default.
-Yet, due to the bugs left in the sound-related code, it is possible that even when the list is present, the music may still not be played properly, or even completely not playable due to emulation bugs.
-This function is not meant for playing music from all the games, you need to make your own list in some cases. The format is shown below:
$title: put the game name displayed in the title bar.
$samplerate: specify the playback rate. Please put one of the 11025, 22050, 44100 in. All the enclosed lists are now 22050.
$pre: put the bank number (2 digits Hex) before the playback command. Most of the games can just use the number "07".
$stop: put the code for stopping the track playback. Though most of the games uses "03" as the reset code, I suggest using the stop code "20" instead.
$start: the statement of the start of the track list.
$end: the statement of the end of the track list.
-The track list should be added between the $start and $end tag. Please avoid putting redundant returns and comments there. In some cases it can freeze the whole program.
-The format is, after the 2-digit Hex code, add the track number after a half-width space.
e.g.)
$title=Metal Slug
$samplerate=22050
$pre=00
$stop=03
$start
02 Neo Geo Logo
2b The Military System
blah, blah, blah...
2c Nazca Logo
$end
Yet, the added track lists are mostly created from the lists of MAME E2J's Bridge M1.
Changelog beta2 bugfix1:
- Fixed the problem that some games cannot detect the completion of the BIOS initialization, thus leading the graphic refreshing stopped.
Changelog beta2 bugfix2:
- With the fix above, fixed the graphic refreshing problem with debug BIOS and Asia BIOS.

"Now, I'm not planning to make these games playable with sound on at all." WTF!!! Metal Slug or King of Fighters WITHOUT SOUND! He better get that fixed when it does get to full speed. Neo Geo for Life!!!
killer I need me some portable Captain Tomaday
Is this a good release? I'm using YoyoFR's Neo Geo CD emulator, it works like a charm with music, and all games working, maybe just KOF is kinda slow and sometimes hard to do combo, but really playable! I suggest using that one, metal slug also working like charm !
I know that Neo Geo CD is perfect but I really want an AES/MVS emulator.
whats the difference between this neo geo psp release and the classic neogeocdPSP? does this neo emu play the neo ROMS as opposed to the cd version? in other words will i be able to play metal slug 3-5 and garou mark of the wolves with this? u know basically every other neo game that came out AFTER the neo cd died?!!! the NeoCDpsp is freakin sweet. i love SNK,but man if i can have mark of the wolves on my psp, id be in heaven!!
Isn't this basically the same system as the Neo Geo CD (except the cartridge/CD differences?) Instead of trying to emulate the arcade Neo Geo or the AES home system, would it be possible to make a converter to make the cartridge roms work with the NeoCDZ emulator? They seem identical hardware wise except maybe the music format. The Neo Geo CD emulators work perfectly and even play the mp3 soundtracks at 222mhz!
I believe neogeocd games take up much more space and neogeo has a wider selection of games
the difference is that the cartriges have certain chips IN them that were necessary to run the roms. so it gives the devs some isues.. besides would you really want this to be conjoined with CDZ? CDZ already takes up like almost a gig on my gard for like 10 games.
which beta 2 version is this?? i were just at his official site and there is neogeo em beta 2 and neogeo beta 2 bugfix 2 http://neocdz.hp.infoseek.co.jp/psp/index.html#download_alpha
can this play metal slug 3 at all???
I have to say i kinda prefer CDZ too, but i also find the game size a bit of a problem i Think the solution could be with the emulator itself, if the authors or some willing dev, could update or patch the current version of cdz to play random tracks from your psp music folder like boxy does, then you could delete all the mp3 files/folders from the rom files themselves and have a few albums in your music folder @ about 112kbps you'd save loads of space.... im not a programmer but surely it isn't that hard, the game must call for a certain mp3 track to be played at certain times, for eg, metal slug level 1 starts, the game asks for track03.mp3 to be played, so instead the emulator looking for metalslug/neocd.mp3/track03.mp3 it just plays a random track from psp/music/ folder instead, it would be a bit hit and miss on the short tracks ie 15/20 seconds but hey, you'd live with it, as its only 15/20 secs and you have a full track for the level anyways what do you think?? ps yes im talking neocdz not this version neogeo em.
no the cartridge size is too big for the psp to load into its memory in one go.... get neocdz that has metal slug 1 and 2 (but you have to get the neo cd versions - google for the roms or look on torrent sites) the cd versions run because they are designed to be streamed off cd, so it loads each stage in at a time. Wheras the cartridge version has to load the whole thing at once to 13 - GOOD IDEA - COME ON NJ, UPDATE CDZ TO USE RANDOM MP3S
does neo geo cd have metal slug 3, 4, and 5 or only 1 and 2? because i already have 1 and 2.
no - but i wouldn't be surprised if its released by snk playmore at some point, as i think there available on ps2, if your not actually bothered about having it on psp, look into getting it on pc either on a neo geo emulator, or mame
This emulator is great! cant wait for the updates, many games left to get running, NO.13 - is that possible?? lets hope so, that would be cool - neocdz runs perfect but i can only get 5 games on my memory card at a time, and your idea would be a ideal solution - is there any body out there up for modding neocdz?
Since you guys don't seem to know... this emulator is a different emulator than the CD one. The CD system was discontinued as King of Fighters '99 was released, and therefore no Garou, Metal Slug X-5, King of Fighters '00-'03 etc. The AES was supported through 2003 but the NeoCD was supported through early '99. There are much more titles available for the cart system, but there are a couple notable titles missing that are only available on the NeoCD. Those are Samurai Spirits RPG and Ironclad. Hope this helps.
GREAT RELEASE!! more games work and the bugs are much less! 1. I would love to see a MVS/AES option and the usual speed-ups 2. A way to display the actual Game titles instead of rom.zip names. I kinda liked the first release because of this. I went through and renamed 88 files IE: from bstars.zip to "Baseball Stars Professional" now I have to del and move them all back again... oh well it;s worth it! I'm sure this is easy to do (if you know how to program a Neo-Geo emulator on the PSP in the first place :p Also... I believe the only people who don't care about this release are 1on1 fighting nuts... I am all about the classic NG games... Baseball Stars, Top Players Golf, Cyber-Lip etc.. all run perfect! I would like to see Metal Slug 1-5 running at full speed with sound, but I am also buying SNK/Playmore's release of Metal Slug Anthology anyway... so no biggie.. PS: Anyone able to run the Universe Bios without it lock at "PLEASE WAIT" at the start? I'd like to play these in AES mode. S***** pps: Why does QJ.NET censor my name (S-p-o-o-n-m-a-n) ??!
I'm having the same problem using univ-bios with that "please wait" screen, it'll just hang there playing the music really fast. That's why i'm not updating, in my opinion beta1 was better and loaded games much faster.
with this and neoCDpsp? ive been usingthat one for months and its freakin awesome, virtually no loading, excellent speeds, and mp3 music,...so whats the deal with this one? unless this can play aes/mvs roms like metal slugs 3-5 and X, and KOF2000-2003 and most importantly. the greatest 2D fighter ever made, garou mark of the wolves, then im in, if not, i wont bother, YoYo's neocdpsp owns anyways!!
does this emulator support .zip files, if it does it would really save a lot of space on memory cards
YES it supports ZIP files... I have 88 roms on my memory card at around 300MB (I also have a 4GB card so 300MB for 88 NEOGEO roms is fine by me)
where does the bios go
