Video: Laughing Man TIFF exploit working on PSP-3000?

Man, when exploit fever hits, it hits hard! A user by the name of p2s2p on the Dark-AleX.org forums has apparently been able to run MaTiAz's Laughing Man TIFF exploit (the slim.tiff one, it seems) on a PSP-3000 with OFW 5.02. Here's a video:

As you saw in the vid, merely opening the TIFF file doesn't cause the exploit to run. You have to make sure that you have other photos in your PHOTO folder (around 10 seems to be the safe choice) and let all the thumbnails load first and then scroll up and down a few times until the crash occurs.

You might have to make sure that the TIFF file stays at the bottom of the thumbnails list too, although I'm not so sure about that part. There's also this post on the same thread by user cypriotbro, who says he's been able to reproduce the exploit 100% so far:

i have 8 pictures in my psp/photo folder (including the slim.tiff which is at the bottom) i turn my psp off fully(hold power switch) and back on. then i go to pictures and click on the ms. very quickly you have to scroll all the way down and back up twice, then press o then x and scroll all the way down.

Some posters think that the key to making it work lies in clearing the PSP's RAM first, hence you have to turn it off. There are other tricks to doing this such as changing the language, so try them out too. There's a lot more info you can find in the source link.

There are also some user posts on the forums saying that this also runs on a TA-088v3 mobo. I don't have a Brite myself so I can't really test it out. Feel free to try it if you have one lying around, though.

Thanks to InTeNsE-OnE for the tip!

I haven't tried myself, but I've seen enough videos and screenshots in the last few hours to be sure it's true. I also got confirmation from trusted sources who tried it on their own PSP3000

I just hope this is an actual way into putting CFW onto the PSP3000. If it has problems running a simple .tiff exploit then what's to say that these errors won't occur during the flashing of the PSP and so bricking it? Hopefully they'll find a way to make it fully secure otherwise I'm not risking it.

it won't be a tiff exploit forever. someone will soon get a homebrew enabler working then downgrading will be possible

Confirmed working on PSP-3002 (aussie) on 5.01 OFW. I also have 8 small jpg's and bmp samples from 'my pictures' and 'C:\windows directory'. slim.tiff at the bottom. Scroll down and before getting to tiff, background goes black and green, and the exploit runs. Probably works 3 out of 5 times. When it doesn't work properly, the exploit text appears but is broken up.

It's more likely that you'd have some trouble starting the process ... no harm no foul ... once the custom firmware installer was up and running no worries. For Example ... you've never run this exploit and seen half of the text appear on the screen.

# kernel exploitleq 2009-04-15 02:56
So, do we still need a kernel mode exploit before we can run HEN, or does the fact that this runs in vsh mode somehow bypass that?

# just for security reasons...xshirox 2009-04-15 03:01
They cover it to avoid their mac adress from being cloned or hacked. (Security Reasons..)

The mac address of a user can be cloned through software, that can be used to impersonate the real user to check emails, online transactions + other personal stuff.

it should be the same, the only difference is the color and the region, I think.

I would be more interested if this allows the Pandora Battery again. I remember DaX saying something that they only need some code from the CPU to make it running again.

I am from UK and have a PSP 3001 with 5.03 OFW and have tried to run this exploit about 20 times and every time my psp just crashes.

BTW, I am sure I have the slim.tiff file in 'PSP/ Photo' and the h.bin file in the root of my memory stick.

I also have about 10 other images on my PSP (from Vistas 'Sample Pictures'

Yeah, just have 8 images on your PICTURE (Photo) folder, and just keep on scrolling down and the Hello World exploit will run.

Copy and Paste this link if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

@ xshirox

as far as I can tell though, there is just about 0 risk in someone stealing your PSP's mac address. It could happen yes, but what would a person get out of it? On a Pc yes it is a risk, but on a PSP?

the only place I could see this mattering is if someone knew where you were and was trying to hack your wifi access, then a mac address could do some harm. Again almost 0% chance though of that being the case.

Unfortunately for you, none of that whatsoever is at all true.

@Freeplay

Some of that is false but you saying that none of it is true whatsoever is also false.

You most certainly can clone/spoof a MAC address. (nothing to do with checking e-mail and such)

I find it hard to comprehend how anybody smart enough to enable a MAC filter would be stupid enough to broadcast the SSID AND either use no encryption or something weak like WEP. If you were that stupid, you bet your a** I could hack into your network and rape it like a $2 whore

great idea, wow has anyone tried making a pandora battery?!?!?!

yes they have. datel made one, got sued for it, didn't really do much, just turned on a lot. woo!

homebrew and stuff! woo! i have all three, 1k 2k and 3k, now they can all be hacked xD

glad it won't be able to play iso's

so many douche bag little kids running around sad that they actually have to pay 30$ for a good game. boo hoo. get over it. i admit, i have played iso's and what not when i first found out about it, but now i get tired of doing it. i pride myself in actually owning the games.

Can't wait to see how great homebrew looks on that nice screen. yummy.

i finally got the exploit to work. and then i got it to work again. can't even turn it off! it looks so beautiful :') i'm crying happy tears haha
