 Deniska's Mapviewer

You may remember Deniska as the homebrew developer who gave us goodies such as X-pired, Reverzi PSP, Project Starfighter, and MapThis. Most of the time this developer brings some homebrew games to the community, but MapThis is a different project. From its name alone, you know that it is suitable for directions-challenged individuals and for people who usually go out of town. This project is actually a portable map for the PSP which is really neat.

It has been a while since Deniska shed some light on the status of MapThis. Now, the good developer is back to hook us up with some new developments with this one. The status of the Mapviewer (we ain't sure if this is the new codename for the project) is still very much active. The reason why it is taking so long to be unleashed is because Deniska crucially decided to start from scratch and re-code everything since according to the author himself, "the previous version was too buggy and limited in functionality".

Deniska also steered away from DSL graphics libraries because they "exibited very unpredictable behavior and switched to custom graphics lib, mostly borrowed from lua player." The developer also stopped relying on Yahoo for maps since it has a very limited content, majority of it are U.S. and Canada cities. Instead he began to utilize Google maps which he believes has a worldwide coverage, crisper map graphics and more of less open API for map manipulation.

Now, he also tells us what he has accomplished so far. He mentions that he is pretty much done with difficult tasks such as "scaling, xy <==>lat/lon conversion, basic attractions display, NMEA sentences parser, scripts to acquire maps". The new version will be able to support regular, satellite, and hybrid maps.

For now, the good developer is still waiting for the arrival of his GPS order-- Holux GPSlim236, so as he can begin with the unenviable task of working on GPS connectivity. From there on, if everything go as planned, we may expect a release in the coming week or two. So with that, let's wish the developer the best of luck, and we need not re-affirm our faith in his abilities-- because faith only applies to things we can't see and Deniska's talents is obviously well-flaunted and used.

# QuestionGuest 2006-07-13 21:41
Would this application be able to have current location function or a function that is like a description on yahoo map or quest map and such to show where to turn and all? It would be nice to have a current location function and would be able to plug it in with the tape and play in the car so we can listen to music and be able to follow the direction that will be given by the program at the same time. Anyway, keeping up the good work. *Rising 2 hands*. All support for you and the first mapping application which would be a must, a need for all the portable devices users. Thanks for all your work.

# Another QuestionGuest 2006-07-13 22:22
Probably Sony PSP GPS would come with a hardware that would be able to track current location using the sattlelite as other GPS systems. So, probably you should take a look into the previous GPS system because probably they would just use the same technology, it would be a good idea to know something about them. Well, probably asking too much :D, every function that it would have would be great. Just keep up the good works. Looking forward to your MAPTHIS application, so if it would be possible please release it within this week or next week.

Most likely, there would be a UK map since Deniska has been using Google maps which is more known for its worldwide coverage of maps. =)

he made project starfighter too? loved that game! also, #1,2,4 grow up... and #3 your kinda talking about a GPS, i think this is just a program for viewing maps.

Thanks man! this would be so useful, lasttime we traveled I used mapquest to get maps and direction and made a neat htm page for easy viewing on the psp browser... now i dont have to spend time doing that anymore thanks to this.

# Alternative techniqueGuest 2006-07-14 06:29
A good way to get MapQuest directions on your PSP is get on Mapquest.com on your PC, put in where you are and where you want to go, take a screenshot of the directions when they come up (PrtSrc button), open up Paint, CTRL+V (Paste) the screenshot, select the area that contains the directions, cut and paste it into a new image, save it as a JPEG, and throw it in your PSP's PHOTO folder. That's what I do...

um the link... is missing the . between co and uk... thought you should know that.

also #22, lol i like my map neatly organized... without the ad and other stuff, htm pages are easy with word, thought you should give that a try too.

this REALLY looks promising!

You won't need Wifi for this app - the maps are gonna be stored on your memory stick.

You'll be ble to generate a map for any location (UK included)

There is not going to be routing/rout calculation in the nearest future - since I don't have data for this kinf of thing..

I should be able to implement clock&compass things - since GPS provides this kind of info..

You cannot be tracked via GPS receiver (unless it's a very special one, bought from some spy store) ;-)

# why gpslim236?Guest 2006-07-14 12:01
just wondering why you chose to use the gpslim236.

should i go buy one now or wait till mapthis

# holux gpsGuest 2006-07-14 12:11
to 28: Holux gpslim 236 is self powered unit. PSP does not have enough voltage to power most of the GPS devices outthere and you don't want additional bateries hanging out of your pocket...

Also, according to specs and reviews it has a decent sensitivity...

Admin(s), it was very nice of you to ban me from posting by IP, for pointing out grammatical errors in your article, but... you missed one. In the same sentence.

"...if everything go as planned..."

should be

"...if everything goes as planned..."

Ok, my work here is done, you can ban me now.

# No more screen shots! =DGuest 2006-07-14 21:01
Half the reason I purchased a PSP was in hope of one day being able to view google maps (particularly the satellite view) to find good roads while out on (motorcycle) rides in the middle of nowhere.

GPS would be cool, doubt I'd use it much though, unless it has a waypoint editor, in which case I wouldn't hesitate to call this the best homebrew app to date.

Needless to say I am really looking forward to this.

Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated.

yeah, i noticed that it is self powered, decent battery life

too. i also like the antenna attachment. but im wondering how would you connect it, most likely

by using the serial cable with some kind of adapter.

cant wait to see the progress.
