Some clarifications on bricking, licenses, and CFW 3.52 Update #3 - Image 1This next one is a LITTLE clarification about what has transpired the last 24 hours concerning Team M33's newest release, CFW 3.52 Update #3. Apparently, the program has refused to work and, in more serious incidents, have bricked a number of PSP units because of issues with some sites and the program's license.

QJ.NET reader MikeyMike01 sent us the information below in the hope that all misunderstandings and issues will be resolved. Here's the message, verbatim:
  • Going to, or having gone to "Criminal" Sites does not, and cannot cause a brick.
  • Upon completion of installation, one can still visit "Criminal" Sites
  • The ONLY code implemented by team M33 is one that checks to make sure that the MD5 is the correct one. Any editing of the installation (Including ICON0, etc.) done will result in a non-functional bricked PSP. Any files on "Criminal" sites have been edited, and thus are causing brickage.
  • The one hosted here on QJ is not an intentional bricker, which does not carry any higher risk of bricking than any other CFW install (Next to none)
That clears a whole lot of conspiracy theories and rumors floating around the interwebs, right? Lesson to be learned: be careful and check out readmes that come with anything you install on your PSPs. It doesn't hurt to be cautious.

UPDATE: MikeyMike01 has sent us another bit of information regarding the clarifications. Apparently, the tipster was referring to visiting the "Criminal" sites using a PC (bricking your PSP because you visited a site on your PC is quite absurd). According to MikeyMike01, in case you did visit the Criminal site on your PSP browser, "you still have to delete your ms0:/SYSTEM/BROWSER folder".

Download your files ONLY from dependable sites...

Forget about PS3News.... THEY ARE ROTTEN ***** and the only responsible for all the bricks.
by - 2007-08-20 02:41:18
Forgot to say that...

"The ONLY code implemented by team M33 is one that checks to make sure that the MD5 is the correct one" That is NOT really true. That is the main check, but also there are several some more checks, such as looking in the cache of the PSP browser for PS3NEWS visits and checking the PSP's Nickname against PS3NEWS forums most active posters. Anyway, that's what I read at Maxconsole Forums in one post from Mathiulieh, who checked the update EBOOT thoroughly. So it must be legit.
by - 2007-08-20 02:43:16
...

The point still stands, the QJ one is safe.
by - 2007-08-20 02:44:57
Original source

shows again that you only should download from the original source =( Team M33 That was rude to make it BRICK when the file is altered!!! Would it not have been enough to just boot to recovery all over again or disable UMD usage or something o.O Now i am REALY scared of your updates. what happens when a download is corupted while downloading =(
by - 2007-08-20 02:47:05
...

The chances of it corrupting yet still be able to run? Next to none.
by - 2007-08-20 02:49:50
cr4p

THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS DONT USE THESE IDIOTS CFW..... IF A TEAM CAN DO STUFF LIKE THAT THATS NOT SEE THROUGH FROM THE START THEN THEY CANT BE TRUSTED AND.... QJ SHOULD NOT POST ANY FURTHER M33s STUFF.
by - 2007-08-20 03:03:15
WaKaRu

even Mathiulieh checked and he says that this will not check he cache of the PSP browser for PS3NEWS visits!!!
by - 2007-08-20 03:14:51
Ahum

They warned you. And they have an awesome firmware and I'll keep using it. Maybe it was rude, but they told you not to, so it's your own fault. Dark Alex told you not to power off, and the idiots who did have a brick. Same story.
by - 2007-08-20 03:17:59
Confirmed

This only checks the integrity of the EBOOT, not your browser cache. Downloading it from QJ or MaxCon is absolutely safe.
by - 2007-08-20 03:19:56
WeeJeWel

agreed(WeeJeWel), this a great firmware, the best out there
by - 2007-08-20 03:21:22
doh

it's in a rar file. therefore its contents will not corrupt.

by - 2007-08-20 03:54:36
Do Not Download 3.52 M33-3 from

ps3news.com coz this is the most lame website of all and shame on them. Lets boycott this sh*t.
by - 2007-08-20 03:58:52
so

what if a corruption happens while copying the update-files to the psp (due to a faulty memstick f.e.)? It will install and brick...dont like that thought...MD5 checks should be safety-measures and not brick-deciders! A message like "u got an edited eboot - installation will not continue" would have bee more than sufficient. but intetionally bricking a device is sabotage... m33, this is baby-like behaviour and it doesnt suit you at all!. no matter what ppl say about should've read the readme. this is inacceptable.

...

don't like the way they do things well use 3.40 LE and shut up
by - 2007-08-20 04:25:19
MORE misinformation

It DOES NOT check the browser cache. The *ONLY* check is the checksum. Don't believe me? Use a hex editor and search the update EBOOT for the word 'browser.' It only shows up once - in the sentence "In this last case, andonly in this one, the problem may be fixed if you delete *browser* cache of both, psp and computer systems, and you stop visiting the site.". Here's a complete list of the files mentioned in the update; some are actually accessed/written and others just have their name put into another file: ms0:/PSP/GAME/BOOT/EBOOT.PBP ms0:/seplugins/conf.bin ms0:/seplugins/vsh.txt ms0:/seplugins/game.txt ms0:/seplugins/pops.txt ms0:/seplugins/game150.txt Nothing about the browser. Stop the misinformation.

qer

stfu lamer, m33 sux ***** and are unproffesional, if they have trouble with some site, why caus bricks ? why dont give a warning or just a recovery menu.. lot of people are victem without knowing anything...
by - 2007-08-20 04:38:04
Why

I can see Team M33s point, but why on earth want they psps to brick? Just coz the didnt know better? and who with a real life did know that 'criminal sites' refers to p3news??... now users pay for p3news' attitude and m33s way of handling things...you punish the wrong people...
by - 2007-08-20 04:43:06
total bull*****

Souleater, you, dear sir, are an idiot. If you were one of the unlucky ones, I bet you'd be crying your ass off right now and cussing. As for me I usually wait a few days or weeks to see there is no problem with a particular download, before using it. So I'm happy about that. But for those unlucky enough, I agree that m33 should not have taken these sort of actions. It was childish and shows a lack of brain power or common sense. The hell with them knowing how to program, the fact remains that they thoroughly didn't think this through, which makes me feel like these are indeed children writing the programs. Know how many people would have bricked their psp? know how many will ever be able to get a psp to run a cfw? Exactly, so stfu and think about all of that before you tell anyone to shut up.
by - 2007-08-20 04:44:48
omfg

could u plz calm down and talk in a normal way? is that possible? someone has another opinion and you want to shut them up? thats childish of you. Better answer the question above! Did you read it? then plz answer
by anantha92 - 2007-08-20 04:47:33
Enough

Guys this is ridiculous, there are various people at fault here. First of all: M33: For scaring peopleby saying things like this will brick if you visited a certain criminal site. I know a friend who has no idea on this controversial issue and uses ps3 news only for psp downloads. Unfortunately he ended up with a brick. I am not from ps3 news i am a straigh QJ reader, im not being gay and spreading ***** about things getting bricked and scaring people. Ps3news: For tampering with te software and distributing it on such a large scale. If it were a PC virus it could be fixed, but an attack on a closed console will render expensive equipment useles. As well as this they are "reportedly" sending people out to major forums like the ones on QJ and other Psp hack sites false brick stories. I don;t know if this is true but this may phsychologically alter someone into thinking this if they are rerading something half way through and shut off the psp in fear. I know it sounds stupid but the actaul psp hacking community is a minority and the majority have no freaking idea. Think this over and stop blaming only 1 party as both parties are at fault here. Even though ps3news did alot more damage to the non experienced users. Sorry for double posting this but i just want the message to get through.
by - 2007-08-20 04:47:34
exactly

M33 seem like a bunch of idiots to me. I'm currently using 3.52 m33 right now, but the hell with any further updates from them, cause I'm never downloading it again, even from sites like qj.net. Because there is still risk of bricking if there was a problem in transferring the eboot from pc to psp. What a bunch of *****s. destroying peoples psp for what?
by - 2007-08-20 05:03:22
Damn Russians

These guys should not be trusted. After all they are russians. Just because someone gets their news from somewhere else does not give them any right to break something that isn't theirs. I will no longer be using their custom firmware after this.
by - 2007-08-20 05:06:37
wow!!!!!!

we love you qj! and m33 team for this UPDATE!!!!!!! yesterday i was mad!! now im happy for your team quick responding to everyone!! congrats!!
by - 2007-08-20 05:07:41
to all commeters

if it wasn't for this guys, you wouldn't be having fun with your PSP's right now.......GET THE POINT? If not let me elaborate further.......would you want your to be on the latest sony firmware and settle for buying games and whatever....or on a CFW that would do whatever you want....and you PSP OWNERS WHO HAS TE LATEST CFW SHOULD KNOW WHAT I MEAN........ SO IF I WHERE YOU..... BE GRATEFUL AND NEXT TIME.......SHOW SOME RESPECT TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THIS THINGS POSSIBLE.......UNDERSTOOD?
by - 2007-08-20 05:09:42

NOW THEY ADMIT THEIR MISTAKE, THAT HOW COOL THIS M33 TEAM IS! I LOVE THEM BACK. SO YOU BACK OFF!!!!!!!!!! GO TO HELL

by - 2007-08-20 05:27:13
oh my

omfg - r u serious? if it wasnt for these guys, no intentional bricker would be out...get the point? so just becoz they made a CFW everyone now has to accept these actions? NO WAY, man. Were people and not lemmings. the world isnt just black or white, no matter what your tiny brain tells you otherwise. I for myself like and love my 3.52 M33-2. But i dont agree with the why and how #3 got published. Am I not allowed to say that you think? think again - u disgusting conformist
by - 2007-08-20 05:28:05
dude

first where r u from?? STOP BEING RACIST!! im not from Rusia, but i did respect them as what they are. You F**king Bast*rd please try to be Respectful. If you dont like any of their release. BACK OFF and take your F**king PSP strip on Your ASS

can you ride m33's ***** any harder LOLOLOLOL
by - 2007-08-20 05:59:55
good to know but it aint working

this still aint helping me rethink my trust on Team M33. So Team M33 was kidding but there was some checks to check but thats a back sta to me
by - 2007-08-20 06:22:29
My two different views

Number One Team M33 creates decent custom firmware. When the Open Edition firmware source code files were leaked on a "criminal" website (which the actual site name is probably getting more viewers due to this update of 3.52 M33 and people posting comments including the website name), Team M33 was angered. Team M33 believed it was morally wrong to visit the site and possibly use the source code for various purposes, they also believed that anyone to do so does not deserve the privileges of using 3.52 M33-3. I understand and respect those wishes of restricting use of their custom firmware update so that "criminal" website active users are not able to use it. Number Two (lol) However, it is morally wrong to render a PlayStation Portable (PSP) unit useless (brick). There are thousands of people who have never used custom firmware before. Yesterday, those people downgraded to 1.50. Next, they searched for "custom firmware" on Google.com. They clicked the first link (a QJ link) and were brought to a page with recent news. They scroll down the page a little bit and click on "Team M33 Rolls Out Custom Firmware 3.52 Update #3. They again scroll down skimming through comments and notice a certain website several times (the "criminal" website). They then go to that website because they are curious about why it was mentioned so many times in the comments. They scroll down the page and find another story, about 3.52 M33-3. They click on it and then download the file. They are overly excited to have custom firmware features so they follow instructions to install immediately (on the "criminal" website) and are so happy to press the cross button on the file under the game menu in the XMB. They bricked their PSP and are now crying, swearing, buying, flaring, etc. Not everybody reads the readme, or knows a lot about custom firmware and other things. Team M33's decision to brick PSPs intentionally (whatever the reason is) is unacceptable, childish, and unethical. A punishment should not be as harsh as that, no matter what.
by - 2007-08-20 06:23:35
lmao

some comments really made me laugh. if anyone's to blame it's ps3*****s. the only real brickers on the net come from their site. oh, and if your eboot became corrupt when transferring to your ms, that's only due to bad luck. the thing is ANY cfw eboot that became corrupt when transferring to the ms can cause a brick. i really don't see what all the hassle is for, afterall any corrupt eboot can cause a brick anyway when writing to flash0 and the only potential brickers are hosted by ps3news. they knew that they would be hosting a potential bricker when they hosted their hex-edited version? they're the ones to blame and no one else
by - 2007-08-20 06:24:27
aaa

If they got beef with whatever websites nobody even give a rat's ass about, take that ***** to the backroom and deal with it between said website and themselves. Don't be bringing other people into their little games of duck duck goose.
by - 2007-08-20 06:31:48
hey rubbish

u know what? dun use it then. anyway just got new over maxconsole that team WildC*rd most probably will implement this brick check on the lame website. so the 2 most prominent cfw teams have combine their effort to fight the lame website. if u dun wanna use m33, i guess u have no where to go too coz team WildC*rd will do the same. Dark_AleX has infact supporting this idea. what r u waiting 4. hurry up n update to official fw dude. tat will make u satisfied. : )
by - 2007-08-20 06:35:26
roflcopter

M33 knew ps3news will try and modify it which will lead to a bricked psp. That's their plan all along. And anyone who visit the site either knowingly or unknowingly will get a brick waiting to happen. Easier methods with the same result could have taken. M33 drop the ball on this one with bad decision making knowing well that ps3news will modify it and anyone who gets it from there will have a new paperweight to play with.

by - 2007-08-20 06:43:27
hey b.b.p

were u following the whole story of this battle? m33-3 will never brick yr psp if u download it from trustable website like qj,maxconsole n psp-hacks. m33 delibrately put a lame statement to lure ps3lamers.com to remove the statement in the eboot. n the only way to remove it is to opens up the eboot. but by doing so, it'll corrupt the MD5 SHA value n brick. this is what ps3lamers been doing now just to hide everyone from the fact that they are theiving lamers. n this is exactly what m33 brilliant tactics. everyone here r 100% safe. ppl who brick only bcoz they downloaded from the ps3lamers. yes this is a heavy lessons but it's necessary.
by - 2007-08-20 06:48:28
damn you

damn you from whatever country. you have no brain what the ultimate motive the russian r doing. opens up yr eye n seeing where the cfw future is going if everytime the source code of each cfw got leaked by the lamers aka ps3new.com. we will have no cfw if this continues to happen when cfw dev feels disappointed n no support. wake up period. : (
by - 2007-08-20 06:52:31
aftermath

Now what if some retards who think it's funny to take these eboot-brickers and upload them to elsewhere such as other forums and torrents claiming these are legits and came straight from the source. Stupid as it is there will always be newbies who wouldn't know any better and dl them ending with sad results. Do they deserve it? maybe. should they be paying for whats going on in the whorehouse between two pimps who are bickering who can 5-finger pimp slap harder? hmm maybe. BUT at the end of the day it's between the two, pimp slap each other, don't be bringing in the average joe who just want so pootie tang and slap them.

by - 2007-08-20 08:01:17

why did m33 have that comment about ps3**** anyways. they should have just posted their update, list the features and leave it like that. it would be a happy but now a lot of people are turning on m33

I apologized for any inconvience i have caused you but i was simply stating that the M33 group carefully layed out what would happen if you were a user from teh lamer site or tried to edit there program. So if you did this unknowingly than i feel bad for u but its not there fault you didnt read.

A punishment should not be as harsh as that, no matter what.
by - 2007-08-20 08:54:06
...

think about this for a second. What about the ones that have no idea about these little war games these two are doing. People link files through forums, through friends, etc etc. Now if these people have no clue whats the deal why should they be brought in and take the hit for a child's revenge. Quit thinking about how you are smart and everyone should be too 'cause you're sadly mistaken. You wouldn't be so giddy if you were the ***** on the end of that stick they called a security measure.
by - 2007-08-20 08:55:41
AGREED...BUT

i agree but rite before you update it says it i dont know bout you but when i saw that i read it because it looked long i didnt read teh readme i read that and i knew what he was talking about so i went ahead but those who didnt should of stepped back and looked up what he was talking about

From Mathieulh http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t+75136+page+36

"Ok, I finally reversed the whole flasher. It does not check for the nicks nor the psp webbrowser cache and bookmark. The code is there but conditional while the condition can never be met. A way of saying 'We did not do it but we can if we have to.' It will only brick IF the md5 is different which is very unlikely to accidently happen"
by - 2007-08-20 09:03:30
you don't get it

that's not why ppl are complaining. The fact of the matter is m33 KNOWS that ps3news are gonna modify it and there will be a large amount of potential brickers knowingly or unknowingly. YET they went ahead and released it. ps3news already know the files they host are brickers and do it anyway just to smear m33's name and get a good laugh at it. At the end m33 didn't accomplish anything but get a bad name for themselves.
by - 2007-08-20 09:07:35
I can see your point

well i guess that makes sense but did the psplamer website have take out teh disclaimer that was in it rite before you updated
by - 2007-08-20 09:15:40
Maybe

They sure did something to that eboot hence the reason why so many ppl got a new paperweight to look at.
by - 2007-08-20 09:20:49
WHY NOT THE FIRST TIME?

This is what the readme should have said. This explination is better suited for release than that crazy text file. M33 is no doubt kings of cfw and do deserve props for that however, they did screw this up. Lets hope this is not a common thing.

PS3News R Sheeyt, If U Do Something Wrong They Post Ur Ip Stupid Fat Wankers
by - 2007-08-20 09:26:33
The real guy laughning now is...

sadly... SONY. I think an error message that refuse to perform the update unless you agree to their condition is good enough to spread your message. Bricking is just too much. Thank god I had the Team Wildcard one instead =P but it is only 3.40 so... may be next update will be unlucky for me...
by - 2007-08-20 09:37:20
Bricking was a little extreme

Causing the firmware to irreversibly brick if modified was a little overboard, don't ya think? If you could do that, couldn't you just make it so it doesn't install if its been modified, but rather that it displays a message telling you to not go to sites that steal code? That might have been a better option for all rather then punishing people that weren't involved. I was almost ready to update to Team M33's Custom Firmware, but after this I am tentative again. There were many much better options then to brick PSP's.
by - 2007-08-20 09:47:06
.

The flasher does a md5 checksum of the entire file. If it's corrupted you can't proceed with the installation.
by - 2007-08-20 09:48:23

Wrong!! "Racial discrimination is treating people differently through a process of social division into categories not necessarily related to 'race'." You should really educate yourself before you call other people stupid.

History of ***News.com

Since the beginning of time, this website run by a fat mexican that calls him Zima (I need to find that fatboy and his girlfriends pic) open their site releasing files as their own work going out of their way to rip out nfo files, and more. This wasn't the first time the ripped someone off and for the first time I have to say a huge ***** you to ripping so many people off. The file that M33 released was completely safe to use, it also did a check to make sure that the file was unaltered to minimize the risk of damaging your PSP. M33 did nothing to brick your system. Their installer doesn't actually brick your system. ***news.com had to alter the eboot and alter the checks in order to release the file on their site with no premission. You ask why anyone should need permission on a file that was meant to be distributed freely? Nope you don't need permission but when your site has been a site that has done nothing but steal from the scene since the beginning of time because you were some fat mexican that thought you had it all figured out, no you lose your Cyber-privlleges to continue into the future with new innovations in software and creative work of those that would go out of their way to provide such wonderful software for free. To those of you *****ing *****s talking about *****ing stupid ass n00bs downloading this update and *****ing themselves over, the update only says if you got this from ***news.com it would brick your system. Dee Dee Dee press the X button cause Zima the mexican is a *****ing awesome man. HELLO *****TARDS THIS WAS UPDATE #3 IT REQUIRED YOU TO HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED THE OG CFW 3.52M33. OMFG you can't be a *****ing n00b and jump straight to 3.52 M33 - 3. It just goes to show how many *****ing stupids are on this website. I'm so glad you *****ers have bricked your systems. I hope more creative minds out there will continue to make these *****ers stop updating their systems with your software, cause M33 team just wanted some respect with their software. I don't see everyone picking up the baton and moving forward and helping the scene. Team Wildcard is just modifying old firmware. Are they really trying to team up with M33??? Hell no.... They are working on the last accepted firmware before M33 3.51 - 3.52, 3.40.... DAXs hardwork. Props to M33 for being at top of the game. A huge ***** you to ***news.com lol. That site is so *****ing dead you they are using points to lure you to be acctive on the site. You see post after post of "Yeah thats great!" "OMG!" "Bump" just so they can download the credit ripped files off their site. Hey ***** twards ***news.com www.ps2-scene.org will forever own you. As for n00bs that just downgraded their system and jumped straight to M33 3.52-3 you are full of *****. Not everyone here is stupid. And to all you OMG i'm 1st post stop being a *****ing mexican or vietnamese Counterstrike addicted *****. So many of you out there. I'm so glad i rip you guys off on a daily basis.

dumbfu#cks

all you think about are isos when you hear custom firmware. Most ppl don't use isos. Partly because they know its wrong and partly because half of them are retarded. Oh and euroboy you put the dollar sign on the wrong side of the 200 stupid.

lumines

i have a 3.50 psp and i have been trying to buy lumines since the downgrader came out, i cant buy it online and i have been calling gamestop and ebgames and blockbuster daily but none have it. anyone know a place that would have it
by - 2007-08-20 11:12:44
umm....

The fact of the matter still stands that the babies at m33 released an update knowing FULL WELL how many unintentional bricks it would cause. The root of the problem lies with m33, not ps3news. Everyone knows ps3news are *****wads and that they WOULD do something like this, yet still m33 released this update telling the whole community how much they care about us....jack *****. All they care about is that their precious code doesn't get stolen again. And don't dare tell me m33 didn't steal code. Ever looked at the recovery menu? Yeah....I remember it used to be green and blue and said "OE RECOVERY MENU".....now it's orange and black and says "M33 RECOVERY MENU" and everything else is the same...ooh we changed the color dat not stealing!
by - 2007-08-20 11:17:09
Umm...

The fact of the matter still remains that the babies at m33 released a potential malware that had the capability of bricking expensive equipment knowing FULL WELL that it will be tampered with and cause countless bricks yet they still released it with no concern at all for the average user. All these people care about is that their precious stolen code doesn't get stolen again. They don't give two *****s about the community.
by - 2007-08-20 11:18:36
sorry.

commented twice because of slow ass internet >.
by - 2007-08-20 11:26:34
goodwork m33

its correct what m33 is doing, the upgrade is just grade, but the idiots on ps3news dont deserve this, stealing code and romeving author names, their just little ***** who want to make money, the care only about themselves. THEY are the reason why we dont just a 3.52 wildcard edition, now we only have the leaked edition. its good, but ps3news prevented it from being even better.
by - 2007-08-20 11:27:23
...

As do we all. You can say Dark Alex had his flaws but honestly compare these custom firmwares, his was practically flawless. You never even hardly heard from the poor kid, he'd just release his ***** and if you wanted to download it, go for it. When DAX was around people started coming out with other types of flashers, and people would always go, "Oh well I don't know about this..." but if you seen Dark Alex released something with his 1,300 jumps, you'd hit Download real fast since you knew you'd be safe. ...there's my little "He kicks ass still," paragraph. Oh and the dude under me is kinda slow. The answer, "No."

STUPID!

Wow, people are really stupid... creating dumb rumors that barely make any sense at all! LERN2COMPUTE
by - 2007-08-20 11:58:44
confirmed

the one with this MD5 works
by - 2007-08-20 12:04:12
don't think so

you can compute MD5 from your memory stick copy and compare it to the one you downloaded... if M33 would say the correct MD5, everuthing would be fine although it lets a couple people without computer knowledge (Total Commander can compute MD5 with Files->Create CRC Checksums and add MD5 checkbox) with bricked PSP M33 are doing this in their free time, the only thing they get is fame and if someone tries to steal it... well, I understand why they've done the way they did

Re-To Lumines wanted

Go to PSP-Hacks.com then go to forums. Sign up and go to BUY/Sell (at very bottom of page), Create a topic and ask to buy a copy, some should respond and attemp to sell you one, or you can search cause maybe someone is selling one.
by - 2007-08-20 13:47:17
...

this is ridiculous. this doesn't really have any effect on the criminal website. it only effects the unknowing end user. Why can't they just make it so it refuses to update instead of bricking. I had my faith in you M33 and you did a pretty good job but this is a real blow to your reputation.

They've lost all credibility.

An intentional bricker just for visiting a website? That's both insane and WRONG. Shame on M33. I'll never use another one of their firmwares, even if it means I have to wait for another team to enter the fray.

WTF?

You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves. You're all picking on each other and m33 and ps3news. Just be a little more mature. What M33 did was wrong and what ps3news is doing is way worse but you shouldn't give them your lame *****.
by - 2007-08-22 04:40:52
....

The one we should blame is sony. Why let the PSP brick instead of restart or something else? Sony just dunwan us to exploit the hardware. And M33 make use of this.
