Ó
We informed you last week that Andreas has finally decrypted the Capcom Play System 3 (CPS3). Now that the emulator is nearing completion, ELSemi and Haze have finally decided to divulge concrete information about the project.
The emulator itself is for Windows but just like what happened to program MAME4ALL, it will eventually be ported to our dear PlayStation Portable. As for the emulator's current status, here are the info as provided by the author (ELSemi is actually Spanish and this is the translated version):
- CPU: Emulated
- Graphical:
- Tiles 8x8: Emulated
- Tiles 16x16: Emulated
- Sprites: They are, but with errors
- Global Offset: Emulated
- Trowel of colors of sprites: Some good, other badly
- Tileflip within tileblok: Not emulated
- Zoom lens: Not emulated
- Priorities: Not emulated
- Linezoom: Not emulated
- Linescroll: Preliminary
- Sound: Emulated
- Controls: Emulated
- CDROM: Partially emulated. At the moment the games start in NoCD way

Both emulators will support CPSIII but only Mame is open source so susceptible to be ported on PSP like CPSI and II.
But I wouldn't hold my breath as it requires quite a beefy system to run on PC, PSP already did have difficulties with CPSII.

I expect the RAM usage to be the really serious problem even above the CPU usage. CPS3 uses a lot of compressed sprites, and that'll eat RAM for storing both compressed and uncompressed-in-use sprites, not to mention the program code, the emulator code itself, and so on.

where there's a will, theres a way.
look how far cps2 went....even NJ said emulation at first was impossible. then magically, it worked, but was slow. it was said it would never reach full speed. and voila.
you never know, when u have very skilled devs.

i would rather see someone go "omg 1st!11!!1!" than i would see someone go on about how they are retards. when in truth they are more pathetic for bringing it up

I have full faith that if NJ can create an emu for the PSP, using similar techniques to emulate CPS-II games by using a cache folder. I believe he can do it if he puts his mind to it.

But MAME for all honestly sucks. The compatibility rate is very poor and the speeds on games in general is abysmal.
Just compare most of the MAME4ALL games to the CPS1/2 ones done by another Dev. Much harder games to emulate properly but done with style and speed that approaches 60fps.
Most MAME4ALL games have poor sound and/or poor speeds, on games that were released in the 80s ffs.
Seriously, whilst I seriously appreciate the effort that went into MAME4ALL, I'd hardly be spruiking that as a really great emulator. In fact, it's one of the most under developed ones for the PSP as far as I am concerned.
MAME for the PC currently supports over 6000 games and really high speeds, MAME4ALL is lucky if is supports 50 and of those, only a very very minor percentage run acceptable at all.
If you want a holy grail of EMU on the PSP, you need a proper MAME emu. Like I said, MAME for the PC supports over 6000 games at the moment, all running to a nice high quality.
Get even half that with speed and sound support of the CPS1&2 Emus and THEN you have something to crow about.
Cheers
