The Grand Return of Fanjita: PSP-3000 now fully hacked via the Phantasy Star Portable Exploit

Just when we all thought there is no more hope for the PSP-3000, Fanjita comes back, and armed with a fully workable exploit for the unyielding PSP Brite. He's been quiet for some time now, but little did we know he's been up and about tweaking away on the Phantasy Star Portable exploit, which was only "potentially-an-exploit" by yyoossk just last week.

And don't we all love a nice, pleasant surprise? Things can only go up from here for our fave handheld.

Phantasy Star Portable - Image 1Homebrew working on all PSP firmware (even 5.02) with a Phantasy Star Portable GameSave Exploit!

Justwhat does this do, need you ask? Well, it only lets you, PSP owner, on ANY firmware the ability to play homebrew applications, games and emulators till our hearts content or till we explode from nostalgia. So without further ado check out the simple steps for running Fanjita's oober-cool hack at Brite.

Guide for running the developed Phantasy Star Portable Exploit:
  • Check that you have an Japan or US version of Phantasy Star Portable (Japan:

ULJM-05309, US: ULUS-10410). Work on the European version will be following soon.

  • Extract the contents of the 'MS_ROOT' folder from the ZIP file into the top-level of your memory stick. (HINT: If you wind up with an 'MS_ROOT' folder on the stick, you've done it wrong).
  • Start the game, and as soon as it gets to the 'Press START' screen, press START. If you wait until the demo has started, the exploit may not work.
  • The screen should go blank, and the exploit will start after a few moments. It doesn't do anything except look pretty at this stage - but feel free to enjoy the first homebrew on your PSP Brite.

It's not only way too late, but it's very dangerous. Unless you refund all PSP-3000s costs to people who bought them after reading this news, that is.

» If you fell for it you deserved it

If you saw this news and bought a PSP3000 because of it, then my assumption is you'd do nothing more than use it to pirate, or else you wouldn't have bought it right after you thought it was able to be hacked. You would have acutally bought it to play games.

In that case. Either you have a system that you may as well let sit there because you're a pirate and don't pay for games that you play, or you can actually start purchasing games. I have a PSP2000, but I also have about 40+ games so I could live with a non downgraded PSP. However, downgrading my PSP Slim with the help of my phat so I could use emulation and apps as well.

by yongobongo - 2009-04-01 20:15
» lol

How could anybody believe this without a source.. Why would QJ have the information before Noobz?

by Aphex85 - 2009-04-01 21:50
» Hmmm...

I don't disagree with the fact that people may have gone out and bought a 3000 because of this but i don't think that makes everyone that does a pirate. Unfortunatly for some it is, but others may just want to use homebrew apps.

Besides, it's quite funny. For someone whos having a go at pirates to be fine with using emulators. Did you pay for those roms or did you download them, Hmmm? remember, downloading a rom also makes you i pirate i afraid.

by rebel101152 - 2009-04-01 22:20
» I downloaded it...

just out of curiosity.I don't even have a 3000 yet and sure enough it's a prank.

The Grand Return of Fanjita

Congratulations ! You've unlocked our special QJ Greeting for April Fool's Day! ^_^

If you look close enough, the instructions presented is just the famed Lumines Exploit, tweaked a bit to make it the fully-developed Phantasy Star Portable Exploit.

We know, you're disappointed. But don't worry, we'll make it up to you. When the real thing does land, we'll deliver it to you straight off the hot, sizzling platter, wrapped in gold ribbons and all that jazz.

Okay, maybe the gold ribbons are too much. But, if and when the PSP-3000 finally becomes fully hacked, we'll be the first to let you know.

Thanks for being a sport, and Happy April Fool's (or what's left of it).

That's what it says people.

» prank hope

sorry to all 3000 owners and i know i will cop it for saying this but...i dont want homebrew on the 3000 because piracy made psp games bad. And i know homebrew is not = to piracy but thats in an ideal world. i use pmplayer and a few other homebrew but PAY for my games in the hope dev's wont completely give up on the psp.

by KrzaQ - 2009-04-02 00:56
» x

It was April 2nd for most of the world.

As for "deserving it", the console as it is sold by Sony is useless. I don't really care if you believe it or not, but I only use my PSP to play mp3s and play Contra (of which I have original copy btw) on emulator. Oh, and I occasionally play OpenTTD.

So, should I fall for this stupid hoax, just to be able to play without having to shield the screen from sun I'd be sorely disappointed.

by Katagi - 2009-04-02 03:37
» Not true...

Remember how successful the ps2 was? It was easy to pirate, along with the ps1.

The wii and 360 is easy to pirate games with, guess what! They're in the lead!

The NDS is waaaaaay easier to pirate then the psp due to the fact that it lacks any firmware updates. All you need to do is buy two simple things to just download games, and guess where the ds is? Not dieing.

It's not piracy making games bad, it's the lack of developers making good games.

by billylee8 - 2009-04-02 05:26
» Give me a break, Katagi

You think little kids (i.e. 90% of the DS user base) even know about flash carts?

If the "better games" argument were true, not a single person would have pirated Crisis Core or Dissidia. And if price were the issue, Patapon wouldn't have been pirated either.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-02 06:42
» @whitecloud

piracy had nothing to do with developers making bad games

used games has a bigger market than pirate games

and its perfectly legal

i reckon good on QJ.

to Mabie A, thanks that was funny as.

where whitecloud is right is when he says people who are waiting till its hacked, obviously has little intention on paying for games

by Katagi - 2009-04-02 11:02
» 90% of the userbase is kids?

If the 90% little kid user base argument were true, then why is nintendo taking note of the flash cards and still coming out (within most of the shovelware it has) with some great games? They attempted to block flash carts with the DSI along with the local wii updates to knock out the homebrew channel.

It's amazing how you think if a game is great then no one would pirate it. Those are great psp games and people still bought them, there will still be pirates no matter if the game is good or crappy.

Why didn't you take note of the other systems that have piracy issues? Heck, the ps3 sadly isn't doing to well and so far it's piracy proof. The most you could do is back up Blu-ray games and play ripped blu-ray movies in the Linux OS.

What I'm trying to prove is that piracy does not make a system have bad games. Is that really too hard to understand?

To be honest, the psp and NDS have their share of great games.

by Katagi - 2009-04-02 11:05
» KrzaQ

Useless? Nice opinion you have there! Same could be said with the ds and it's shovel ware.

Just because you're not enjoying the psp does not make the damned thing useless.

by DaddyMulk - 2009-04-02 11:11
» >>Is everybody here 15 yrs old?

Piracy hasn't killed the PSP. Piracy has never killed any system. I've seen a dozen game systems come and go, and the most successful ones are ALWAYS the most pirated.

The NDS is just a all around better product, and most importantly: it's fun. And fun sells itself. The games might be mostly stupid, but "fun 'n stupid" is way better than "boring but looks-cool".

The PSP is dying (in ENGLISH SPEAKING countries mind you!) because of lack of consumer interest and interesting games. The PSP was in serious trouble from it's launch. It's a very nice handheld, but it wasn't anything special. And most of the cool features it has were poorly implemented. The PSP is Sony's 1st portable system, and it really looks it.

Nintendo is a deity. The DS gets a dozen games a month, along with all that Nickelodeon/Disney sh*t . I know at least 17 different people with children in their lives(5-12 yrs). ALL of them have the DS. Of those children, about 10 of them use flashcards. You know, you don't have to be an hardcore anime-download'n computer geek to enjoy a little PIRACY. If you're older than 10yrs, then you will stumble apon DS piracy within 30min of casual internet usage(if searching DS releated stuff). Much younger children get their flashcards from: parents, uncles/aunts, family friends. I've seen tons of flashcards in the hands of little kids.

I go to Japan almost every year and lots of small shops are willing to sell you a flashcard chuck full of games! (well, not so much anymore..Nintendo pretty much stamped it out over there). There's no denying it. DS Piracy is everywhere, and aleast 50% of its users are aware of it and have taken advantage of it.

Just face it, kids, the PSP is failing and it has nothing to do with piracy. And if you're so hell-bent on driving that particular conspiracy home, then it has to be coming from your own guilty conscious. Stop bragging about how many PSP games you bought. I'd bet my left nut for every one you bought legit, you PIRATED 5 other ones. Everyone on the interent is either a liar, or a BIG FAT liar! You have no right to cast stones if you yourself have sinned...even a little bit. I bought 2 Slims just to play CPS1/2 and use PSPtube. I don't like PSP games, but I enjoy do killing time in long lines with my NDS w/ flashcard. In my opinion, PSP games aren't even worth pirating.

A new God of War and GTA wouldn't bring the PSP back to life. A DOZEN fancy new PSP games won't bring it back. PSP is old tech, and there's better fancier gadgets out there now vying for consumer dollars.

The PSP needs to be reborn. Sony needs to earn its respect in the handheld market. Nintendo will always dominate solely for the fact that..well...they're Nintendo. Piracy or not.

Well I wanna thank to this person for finding the expoilt on PSP-3000.

Btw, this exploit should work on PSP Slim TA-088v3 right?

Also,to me, I find it very troublesome. Because you need this UMD game to run it. I hope they find some other way like PANDORA or something.

Maybe the other method of PANDORA?

by PSPZorZ - 2009-04-02 12:52
» You're quite simple-minded

Anyone with have a brain can realize it's impossible to post something on the internet on the same day for EVERYONE AROUND THE WORLD. Anyone with common sense is skeptical of any news they receive online when it is april fools day somewhere. You've obviously got neither.

by Katagi - 2009-04-02 14:33
» DaddyMulk

I agree with you on how Piracy isn't killing systems. But in no way is the psp failing dude, maybe in your eyes...but from the looks of it, it's in 2nd place but far from dead.

There's a huge difference between hating a system that you see it as it dying and it being dead (getting no sales at all.)

The psp is doing good and so is the DS, is that really too hard to actually think?

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-02 14:54

» Hmm...

Well honestly there is a chance that 90% are kids. I know lots of dads buying flash carts for their kids. (that only concerns people who use the internet I guess or have gamer friends but it's more than I thought) to save themselves some bucks.

Honestly I haven't bought a PSP game in a long time... but I don't think any have been worth buying. I've been playing PSX games mostly on my PSP not PSP. Most of which I can't find anymore. As for PSP, I might buy Phantasy Star, Patapon 2 when it comes out, and maybe Dissidia. So far in my mind I don't have any games that are worth buying. (Not that there aren't good games, but most I want are in Japan) Other games are like Gundam vs. Gundam and Bleach games etc. those games have low gameplay value just play for fun kick some ass but never buy. Sorry for Gundam vs. Gundam, good game, but it doesn't give me enough reason to buy it.

I'd only buy games that interest me personally not just that are fun. And yes PSP is mostly dying in America, but not failing. Though funny today some guy just bought one for his kid at work.

Reborn? I doubt it needs to be reborn-ed just needs to make more commercials and maybe allow homebrew, blocking piracy ISO (for the sake of legalities). Then showing it off with Skype, (definitely might improve sales) a GPS tracker, IM clients, things that people use frequently, and then maybe have a harddrive though maybe just come with a bigger memory card.

Wii/DS games have been failing lately. Wii more than DS.

Wow...why did you do this..I mean I didn't go out and buy the game, but some people did, along with a 3000, which is ALOT of money....When I first read this, I was extremely excited(like the others), and then bam....A blow to the gut.......

I don't mean to bash anyone, but I think you guys should give QJ a break. I mean, we are the only ones who are allowed to pull a prank.

They get bashed all the time daily about anything. Even little trivial things. But they keep going, posting news, (Whether late or not, they are busy people.) and posting downloads, etc.

Heck, I bet if they decide they had enough and shut down the site, you'll all miss it. Trust me, I've seen numerous sites in QJ's position. People bashing endlessly when its up, then complaining and bashing some more, endlessly when it shuts down because of the bashing.

Anyway, shouldn't you have downloaded the file and checked it first instead of counting your chickens before they hatch?

Also, it must have been April 1 for them, and times are different around the world. Give them a break.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-04 22:03

these people who rushed out and bought the game or a psp3000 are the type of people who would of bricked their system using the 0okm 2.80 downgrader (remember all the bricks before 0okm didnt put safe guards in the program making it halt on error)

"(...) because you dont read and analyse stuff first (...)"

"(...) Anyway, shouldn't you have downloaded the file and checked it first instead of counting your chickens before they hatch? (...)"

that is so true.

apparently, psp user community has incredibly high percentage or morons and idiots (not to mention the warez kiddies). or trolls. let's be honest - mostly warez kiddies.

it this is going to propagate on other console communities - i'll doubt anybody will feel the urge to even attempt to hack them.

i did some minor help when FMCB for ps2 was being developed. it was good, while it lasted, but the flood of "how do i play warez with this" questions after the release was quite depressing.

where did "think before posting" rule go? or rather, where did the thinking go?

wow, calm down. Your own fault for buying the game. They will always be bugs and such in newly dicovered exploits, so even if it was real, I would still wait a while before mindlessly messing with my PSP.

oh, and Mabie A is a girl.

» maybe this is a stupid question, but...

Have you looked into return policies?

» @ Kiggz

You're really a F**King Retard. A child can see this is a joke. If you want to hack, then make your own. Don't blame anybody else. You didn't carefully read it before doing anything. You rushed in and you got mistake, then you blame people. you're really a retard.

im laughing at all you noobs who are *****ing you went out and bought the game. well hey, you bought the game, makes up for the MANY games im sure you all downloaded illegally anyways. and its a good game to boot.

also, you should have downloaded the file, previous to your being such noobs and going out and buying the game. serves you right for not doing your research and looking at the download. and common, it was april 1st where QJ is based out of (for all you *****ing it was april 2nd).

props to the poster on this one!

» noobs. take note of last few posts

dont be a sucker

if news is posted of a hack

be sceptical

wait for posts either confirming or denying its true

download the hack

look at the files

read the .txt files or other readme's

google it

learn of any probs people face in other forums

then make an EDUCATED decision, so you dont get caught like kriggz the idiot

» They must have no life!

Because nobody gets paid to make fools out of innocent people! I'm glad I doubt everything until it's clear.

There was no mention of user or kernel. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

» Waiting

I had just recieved a psp3k as a gft and rushed home to see if I could mod it and I came across this post. I opened it, downloaded the file, and then...I was like FUUUUUUUUUUU--- but then, I started thinking. Perhaps this prank enraged soemone out there who will now work all the harder at finding an exploint for the psp3k. If not, its just a matter of time until the modding community finds one. To date, the community has managed to mod nearly every model of every system there is, it just takes time and patience. So, for now, I will sit here and wait. And maybe come next April I will not get fooled again!

Good prank, bad timing. Now get to work people, I needs mah homebrew.

» my advice

math has said already thats there is no rush to hack the PSP-3000 since there are already so many hackable PSP's already.

so i advise you to sell the PSP-3000 and try to find a TA-085 PSP-2000 (or other hackable MoBo type) or a PSP-1000.

because you really arent missing much downgrading from 3000 model.

personally i think the PSP-2000 looks heaps better (i own all 3 generations), it may look better in the sun (i havent actually tested this yet) but even if its true, you wouldnt play in the sun most of the time anyway so its pointless.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-08 20:05
» ok

just put the PSP-2000 up against the PSP-3000 in the sun playing Every Extend Extra (brilliant game)

the PSP-3000 did look better, actually alot better.

but i still stand by what i said

most of your gaming wont be in the sun.

so its up to you

keep your PSP-3000 which MAY (or may not) have HEN soon

or swith to a second hand PSP-2000

i am yet to buy a second hand PSP-2000 that hasnt been hackable yet.

and i buy alot of PSP's

i cant stand scratches, one scratch on the screen and i sell or give the old one away and buy a new or near new second hand one

» Oh boy.

You have to realize, you're a total schmuck to believe something like this. It's your fault for jumping the gun about something before you FULLY RESEARCH IT. If you really need the money, you'd be smart enough to resell the game to another idiot willing to buy it on Amazon or Ebay. Nobody is going to care about your boo hoo sob story, especially because you're sinking so low as to issue empty threats to the writer of the article. You might not even realize it could have been someone else's idea, or even a collective idea from the QJ writers. Either way, all of these threats of spam and viruses will come to nothing. You'll either sell the game and get your money back, or you won't and you'll just be depressed some more. Either way, you won't do anything past that, because you simply can't.
