Survey for Dark AleX, et al: Sony asks PSP hackers about their motivation |
Really, how would Dark AleX respond? Sony Computer Entertainment has just released a survey asking the PlayStation Portable community why they hack their handhelds. Click on the image above for a higher resolution of the Sony survey.
Sony has not released details about the research, only saying that it is one of the company's efforts to understand its consumers. But with the boom of the PSP homebrew scene spurred by NEM and the Saturn Expedition Committee, the Spanish Swaploit team, Killer-X, Fanjita, Noobz, and sustained by Dark AleX among many other devs, it seems Sony is trying its best to keep up.
Releasing firmware after firmware (with the latest being PSP Firmware 3.95) may be taking its toll on Sony engineers. Since Sony is protecting the PlayStation Portable from a faceless homebrew community, the very least they can do is know their reasons why they hack the PSP in the first place.
Who knows, this might just lead into a dialogue between Sony and the homebrew community. Now, if you're into the homebrew scene, how will you answer the survey?

Besides, what ever happened to Sony supposedly reasoning with homebrew developers?

What's the best thing that sony added into new firmware releases that doesn't involve anything except the PSP? (so no Remote Play,LFTV or any WI-FI related stuff)
Probably, abilit y to play PSX games on the PSP, being able to listen to music and view pictures at the same time or PSP running at 333Mhz in games. These aren't such great things but generally these things are the only things aren't related with the PS3 (cos alot of people don't have it)WI-FI (same thing as the PS3).
So what does homebrew offer for the PSP?
Irshell,Daedalu s,CXMB,Pandora/DC, heaps of emulators and more that I can't remember.
Everything that sony added was already available by homebrew before sony added it.
Its just that Sony made the PSP which I think is awesome but their not puxhing it to its full potential.
They're just like any other company.

They'd rather put it into buying new Mercedeses than to invest in developement.

And then greeted homebrew like they did back then, then people wouldn't see hackers and the likes of DaX being such a huge issue.

once you take the test, your conscience will get flooded with guilt and coder you will be no more.
stay away from this test, it is pure evil.

And what the hell is with the questions about "being a rebel" and "getting away with it"? Is hacking a PSP now on a level with robbing a bank or something?
If Sony really want to try and understand the hacking community, this is a very badly executed way to go about it.

Sony show us proof that it's illegal before you spout this nonsense...

sony should be surveying DS people.
people hack PSP due to the portable multimedia and gaming capabilities.
people hack it coz of the popularity of the features, like wifi, memory stick, pc usb connection ease of transfer (ipod is stupid).
although processing power is average, low compared to smartphones but still way better than a DS. we can say the psp is a combination of all the sweetest things in technology all rolled into one. and cheap people can game on it for free with the help of hacking.
i bet, if the psp was not hacked like the psp it will not sell that well. pretty much around 30 percent of its total sales were made with custom firmware/devhook/loader on those customers minds. fact is all sony playstation products (ps1,ps2,psp) only go mainstream and or publicly accepted IF there is a way to play pirated copies of games on it and the not hacked versions (psx media center, ps3) bites the dust on store shelves.
again mark my words, if the ps3 is hacked in anyway (modchip, backup game security bypass or custom game loader), ps3 console sales will sky rocket, yes caneven easily defeat the xbox 360 user base.
its playstation's destiny to be the console for every people, poor, rich or just cheapskate like me, but sony is delaying the inevitable on the ps3.
if sony wants psp2 to be unhacked and still be successful, then turn to nintendo so you can see how! (but hey DS is also hacked via mod carts).

2. 1 Yeah Impesses Stupid People.
3. 3 unhacked psp also gets free content.
4. 1 what a stupid question
5. 5 just like modding
6. 3 will sony sue anyone defiling a psp privately?
7. 3 is it s crime? who's to stop anyone?
8. 5 my psp is destined for the cabinet now that ive finished god of war and ffvii crisis core.
9. 3 is there?
10. 1 this is another stupid comment by sony!
11. 5 Bingo Dude! Now You're Learning
12. 3 Legal? Technical Yes!
13. 5 for knowledgeable YES, to us cheapskates YES but less.
14. 1 this is the 3rd stupid survey question.
Question to Sony
1. When will you fire the maker of the stupid survey?
2. Who the heck thought of that surver?
3. What the heck do you exactly mean when you say "Hacking the PSP?" the survey feels like people that hack commits a crime against humanity (ex slaughtering tens of people).
Reply
which I totally agree with, however:
but "unhacked"? This isn't about hacking, its about custom firmware, we are not actively and constantly hacking the PSP; that would be retarded to see how many ways we could hack and bend 3.50 over and over again...

The questionnaire should have been an essay for it to be non-biased but $ony fears that some truths will come out. Such as mentioned above about $ony slacking in allowing its handheld to release its full potential. And don't want the obvious to be blatantly slapped in their face. We all know that but $ony doesn't want it officially confirmed.
Choices are limited. One glance and it becomes obvious that these are leading questions. They don't give you room to reason but instead you are viewed already at the choice they have placed in the questionnaire.
From this, it could only mean one thing if this survey is true. They want to publish the results of this survey in order to show modders as the antagonists of their handheld society while escaping other pressing matters and truths about their handheld. They want to wash their hands on the subject by clearly eliminating the chance for the consumers to state that they too have something lacking as if they have done all that they can for the console.
I advice you guys not to patronize the questionnaire. Anything you pick in that survey will be used against our community. Nothing good will come out of that propaganda.
I bet the game producers are already pressuring them to do something. In my country, I wouldn't be surprised if 95% of the console here runs on a CFW. PSPs with Official FW are only sold at official $ony shops. Other than that, every shop here sell PSPs with the M33 FW plus its bundled with china made accessories and a spare battery under $220.00. Modded consoles are even sold in malls.
Nobody bothers to buy the console here with the original FW. Anti-Piracy Law has no tooth in our country.
If $ony wants to eliminate modded PSPs, either they have the technology to do it (which I guess would only work for a short time) or they plead for tougher enforcement of laws. Anything shorter than a 20-year prison term is dismissible in these country. You could easily pay for bail.

I don't believe this will be the case. The questions are largely rhetorical. They probably won't further Sony's anti-hacker agenda substantially other than understanding the motivations of the average person who modifies their consoles.
Now on the other hand, if the questionnaire weren't multiple choice and asked pointed questions about the source and means of fuel for our firmware and gaming needs, then we'd have reason to worry.
All in all, it appears Sony has made the gross assumption that kids, perhaps teenagers are the core group that hack their consoles, meanwhile the demographics suggest the age of the average gamer is probably early to mid twenties. I myself am approaching my mid-thirties, and I only considered buying a PSP bearing in mind the cumulative expense of owning many games. Plus I wanted confirmation that my library of retro games would be put to good use again. Value is key and Sony appears to stifle what could be a highly valuable dollar-for-feature commodity.

To start off....Sony this may help....
#1 You've only got a handful of great games. The rest...crapware that no one would buy.
#2 If you're not the first to introduce the features in demand....folks will find other ways.
need I continue????

Sony, you want to know why people "hack" the PSP? well there are many motivations, but the majority of people convert to CFW for the features they can get that OFW doesn't have. Things that should be included in OFW but you have failed to include.
Personally, my motivation was that my wife's PSP was Japanese and there was no way to change the button configuration or region of the PSP without CFW. This problem occurred because YOU try to seperate what features each region gets without giving someone the option to change the set region. My wife is from Taiwan, so if her and I make a trip to Japan, then I couldn't use the 1seg tuner on my American PSP if I was on OFW. That is a flaw that is easily fixed with CFW. I've been using Go!Messenger on my PSP because of CFW.
Other reasons people convert to CFW is to run user made applications that do thing OFW can not. I use AFKIM to talk on various instant messengers... something I can't do on OFW. I watch Youtube videos on my PSP, I use IRshell to send files (other than pictures)to my wife wirelessly.... to listen to MY music while playing games, to transfer files via USB WHILE still playing my PSP. All of this would not be possible on OFW.
And here's the reason you've been waiting for sony. People use CFW to download illegal copies of games. Why? because you charge 40 or 50 USD a game for a PORTABLE DEVICE... I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous. You also refuse to drop UMD even though its outdated and a complete failure... so we have to use CFW to rip our games to memorystick so we don't have to use your proprietarty format... I'm happy to keep all of my games on one memorystick instead of carrying a large case with me everywhere I go.
So if you really want to know the motivation, then don't be so disconnected from the community... afterall... the homebrew community is a large part of your consumer base, so stop ostracizing us. Why not come to the forums on here... ask people one on one for their reasons.... don't release some biased multiple choice survey that incriminates all of us... there are intelligent enough people in the community that we can communicate with our OWN thoughts and reasons.
Thank you.

I'm a hardcore gamer and there was nothing on the PSP that can interest me at all........ ipod plays and has better music functions......Everyone else has a computer at home to surf the net....The DS has a tons more games to offer.............The PSP had so much potential and yet compared to these there was nothing Sony was doing about raising the bar on the PSP and nothing was done about it.
in my opinion 85% of the games suck but i have to give credit where it's due. This year has a terrific PSP game line up and i couldn't ask for better.....but it was a litte too late to make up for what they were lacking.
But if you (Sony) had put more effort into the PSP or maybe 1/4 as much effort into putting more content on the PSP and making good games out for it in a reasonably timely matter, people wouldn't feel the urge to look for other ways to fill in the missing gap.
When i first got my PSP over a year ago the only game I bought was Monster Hunter becaues it was a great game even with the flaw of not having a second analog stick.
the only thing worth waiting for was the super cool GPS device and the camera attachments and i've waited for it over a year now and got slapped in the face when found out japan got both of that for such a long time while i'm patiently waithing for it to come out.
The line of games and content up for PSP made me feel so miserable that i bought the PSP for only one game and the wait for better stuff to come out after another long wait went on forever until i had enough and started digging through the internet.
I found out about homebrew and learn all the skill needed myself and no i'm not one of those LAZY IGNORANT LOSERS who bought their pandora batt and memory stick off Ebay.
Since most of the games suck at that time i got CFW i was playing a lot Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gameboy advance games forever running homebrew application which was really a blessing because it was made by someone for the PSP homebrew community to use free of charge and it came out one after another. There are so much that i can no longer keep up with all the fantasic hombrew freebies.......If it weren't for homebrew my PSP would have FLEW and HIT wall one day on PURPOSE...........Homebrew help me stay a loyal Sony "only" console buyer and i'm soo GREATFULL and PROUD to see how far homebrew has gone now.
I feel abadon from Sony even though i love them to the death and will never buy a xbox or 360 but maybe i'll get a Wii for "Monster Hunter 3" only for that game...lol.
And again I think Homebrew and the homebrew community for helping keep the PSP alive for trying sooo hard to squeeze all the juice out of an abadoned tree. The fruits of your labor is delicious.
P.S. my favorit games are MHF2, MHP2-G, Crisis Core, God of War respectively.

sony will never get the ofw as good as the cfw.
it would be awesome if D_A took over Sony ^_^
Sony give up -_-" you'll never be as good as dark_alex. theres no point to compete with him. he's way better than you'll ever be. Sony, if your reading this, just give up. you have no chance against him. don't even try.

Sony should look at what's really going notice there short commings and try to do what there costmers really want. I honestly would have no intrest in the psp if not for those who really make the cool stuff for it like Dark Alex, noob, and all the other who make the damn thing worth having.
maybe sony would pull up there pant's work with those who they condem and make the psp as great as it could be. Listen to them they know what we want.

I know many were pissed about no IR for the remote control, but I loved using the damn keyboard, ah well I guess. Makes me wonder, how hard is it Really to make a damn keyboard for the PSP, Sony? Connect it to the USB or something I don't care, just something.

i "hack" my psp cause i want to get my $200 worth and sonys programs/games just don't seem to offer the money worthness that HB definately gives the options of (saying HB is free and more usefull then almost the whole sony lineup)..
make this a public survey and not just a select few survey and you might get more of a true answer, though severly crippled from the bias of the questions to start with

"to totally get chicks."
The reason people hack the psp is all summed up in question 11. The rest is just poppy*****.

There isn't much but I love DS homebrew, and backing up saves is also quite handy.
PSP hacked because I can get games running smoothly at 333mhz. I gave up on battery life a long time ago.
