Kart Racer Ultra

David Simonsson (Recipio) has entered into our Summer Coding Competition with a 3D racing game. The game looks wonderful and plays just as good. When I picked up the game, I was surprised to see such an entry (3D), and it played like butter on bread. The "kart" moved very smoothly and hugged the corners perfectly, making me believe I am an excellent driver.

The game consists of one level/track in which you must navigate over and under a single bridge while trying to beat your previous high score. I managed to score 80 seconds on my first try through the entire track without bumping into any walls. All of the entries will be released and a post detailing the voting procedure will be up soon. Good luck in the competition and a great job on the game!

Looks well for a first release, hope it goes well in the competition.

Some things I noted:

- Create a HUD or something for the info and ditch the debug screen output, it ruins the graphics!

- There are some issues with clipping, try tesselating/sub dividing your triangles to remove it (or try increasing your near z plane value in your setup)

- I didn't really feel like the kart was moving around the track, it felt more like the track was moving around the kart.

did anyone else notice the illegal mps files in the KRU folder?

by Recipio - 2006-08-27 08:36
»

matthew: Illegal? I don't know what the .mps extension usually is but I couldn't get the level to load with my 3DS loader so I made a converter and converted them to my own file format. I choose to call the files .mps becouse I didn't know anything else which had the extension. So the files only contains the 3d models of the level and the player.

Thanks for all the comments!

By graphic engine bugs I guess you mean the clipping insomniac197 was talking about (the ground dissappearing a little when it's close to the camera). I'm going to try to fix it.

insomniac197: Thanks for your critiques. I've already increased the near z plane value alot. If I increase it more you'll see it clip the ground. I'll look in to sub-dividing/tesslating polygon when I have the time.

I know the debug text is really unfitting. Didn't have the time to fix it before the competition ended. I'll improve the physics a little before the next release aswell. :)

I never post anywhere, but this seems like a good leap forward in homebrew for psp. To tell you the truth i feel the homebrew community is very boring aside from emulators, but 3D games are hard to look away from. Great start, I hope to see more.

by matthew - 2006-08-28 07:24
» sorry Recipio

thats unfortunate that you picked that file extension! The mps file format is only used (as far as i know) for videos on umd videos. They are easily made using the illegal umd tools programs that were leaked to the internet a while back. i believe you, because that would have been stupid to release illegaly made files to the world (think pretty much every piece of xbox homebrew...) and because there are no videos in the game

Sorry for the mixup...
