StrmnNrmn: R13 coming very soon, honestly - Image 1Celebrated homebrew developer StrmnNrmn posted an update today over at his personal website regarding the promised R13 version of Daedalus. For those not in the know, this program is an emulator that allows PlayStation Portable owners play N64 games on their Sony handheld.

According to the coder, he will be releasing R13 after he has added the final finishing touches to the savestate support. These include checking if the savestate you're loading is for a different rom than the one currently loaded as well as linking some metadata to the savestate so they can be shown in the UI.

"In summary R13 is really close and I've not forgotten about it. Just a few more things to sort out and it'll be ready for release," StrmnNrmn added. Currently, here are the already functioning features of Daedalus R13's savestate option straight from the coder himself:
  • The current implementation provides 10 slots which are shared across all roms.
  • You can save to any slot at any time from an option on the Pause menu, or choose to reload a previous savestate.
  • In this way it works just like QuickSave/QuickLoad found in various PC games.
  • I'm tempted to add a special slot for this to the top level of the Pause menu.
  • I used zlib to compress the savestates, so an 8MiB savestate compresses down to 1MiB (or even smaller if you're running games which don't use the Expansion Pak).

» weee! :D

can't wait.

I don't mind the wait as long as the updates are as great as they have been ^^

keep up the good work.

can't wait hopefully it will be out either this weekend or next weekend...hopefully with a 10-15% speed up on Zelda and savestates zelda will be beatable! XD

Wouldn't it be easier and better to just have 10 slots for each rom, based on filename, like most emulators? No databases or metadata scanning necessary. 10 slots seems kinda tight if this emulator is ever going to broaden its compatibility. I'm sure people would be happy to set aside more than 10MiB for savestates.

But it's still amazing to see constant updates. Looking forward to speedups more than anything.

» or...

For dates, just look up the date modified value in the filesystem?

» Speed

I just hope there is enough speed up to play games with sound.

» OGRE BATTLE

» YES

I am so happy an update has come out. I've been checking everyday for updates on daedalus. StrmnNrmn, you are the man. I'm sure the longer it takes the better it will be!

My gosh! You scared me StrmnNrmn! I thought you died or something seeing as it was expected to be released about three weeks ago.

» improve speeds?

I hope so!

by Strongbadunit2 - 2007-10-25 12:07
» haha

same here!

by the Calamity - 2007-10-25 12:17
» yea

i read a blog in which someone said he died in a car accident. ppffff. well, glad he was full of sh**!!

by Churro - 2007-10-25 12:33
» YAY.

I've been waiting for this since my b-day.

lol

I guess it can still count as a "late birthday present" :)

» needs audio

it's almost perfect....you need to really try hard to possible get the audio to work.....that would be phenomenal...

by Churro - 2007-10-25 13:08
» ...

the problem isn't the audio, that audio sounds "scratchy" because it's trying to stay at the game's speed, so the thing that would make it better is a speed up. who agrees? lol

by Strongbadunit2 - 2007-10-25 13:27
» ...or...

Or porting the audio to the Media Engine (ME)

that may also provide a good 10-20% speed up...but porting to the media engine(psp's second processor) is quite hard and time consuming and may take up a whole release to do...or so I've heard

by Chef1 - 2007-10-25 15:43
» Very good news!

I'm hoping that Mario 64 will be at 100% now...

» the most drawn out anticipation since Star Wars

Jesus guys, how long has this been in development?

3 years now?

WHY doesn't StrmnNrmn recruit some experienced coders and speed up the process a little?

by shrimpdude - 2007-10-25 16:42
» because

I don't think the process is as simple as "more coders + better emulator"

by shrimpdude - 2007-10-25 16:43
» er

I meant...

I don't think the process is as simple as "more coders ++ better emulator"

by shrimpdude - 2007-10-25 16:46
» -_-

Equals signs don't seem to be working for me.

by Strongbadunit2 - 2007-10-25 17:08
» yeah

me neither 1 + 1 + 2

but yeah i know what u mean although it may help if he did the regular coding while another person like switched it to ME but yea you're right it might actually make it go slower unless they shared the same computer like in the house...but i think how he does it right now (asking for a little help from Exophase and other coders when he draws a blank on what to optimize next) is most likely the best way to go about it.

by royski007 - 2007-10-25 18:41
» slim?

guess this is still for the 1.5..

wont work for me.. yet.

by JollyRoger - 2007-10-25 18:54
» With time It will come!

But for now I am glad I still have both. 1.5 kernal is the best!!! though I really wish mATkEUpON would have made SmashGpsp more firmware friendly, cause that was great while it lasted!

by Wicked_Insider - 2007-11-01 12:16
» Ogre Battle? Please...

We need all the N64's FPS's to run smoothly at

60fps with clear un-choppy audio first above all

other roms. When This App can do this for 007,

Perfect Dark, DOOM64 and other such FPS's

then and only then will it ever do a great job

emulating most other games.

by Wicked_Insider - 2007-11-01 12:26
» This is exactly why...

they don't like to confirm an exact release date

because sometimes it's not ready by that date.

I never listen to release date projections

because they are all subject to delays, and no

different in the HB community. Yet some still

wouldn't understand this till they them selves

learned how to code and then has a deadline

them selves to meet .

I give props to StrmnNrmn for just coding this

and sharing it with us to begin with, no need

to get snooty about it's delays.

Any update is a welcome site.

Thanks StrmnNrmn

» Because it's free!

When you start paying for it then maybe he could

afford to dedicate more time for a paying gig.

Think about it a little before posting.
