Something New for Daedalus: Viewport Scaling

If you just saw the title of this article, some of you might be groaning by now. Because the last time we posted a Daedalus update, commenters like Loveless (#12) aired that they didn't need an "hour by hour account" of PSP emulator updates. But as what duhh (#24) points out, "Pspupdates has a right if not obligation to post anything news related about the psp no matter how significant. that simple. its a simple glance over if you dont like it folks". Yes, yes, everyone has their valid point. We hear you. But since Daedalus, an N64 emulator.">N64 emulator for PSP">Daedalus, an N64 emulator.">Strmnnrmn's Daedalus has made improvements on his emu, we can't pass up on this update.

And so, with that said and done, here's what the developer accomplished these past days on his emu: StrmnNrmn just posted that he has fixed the viewport scaling for his Daedalus homebrew, one of the more talked-about N64 emus for the PSP. He's now managed to include three different modes in which you can play your N64 games.

16:9 - Image 14:3 (320x240)4:3 (362x272)

From left to right (click images to enlarge):

The first mode (which is what the current Daedalus runs on) stretches the video output to fit the PSP's 16:9 screen. Notice that the vertical bars of the letters 'f' and 't' in the text are heavy. The carpet also poses another graphics-problem that StrmnNrmn is planning to address. The second mode shows the un-stretched 4:3 screen ratio (renders at 320x240), which solves the 'f' and 't' problem (but not really the carpet). Of course, with this screen mode, there's the waste of space on the sides. The third mode is the new 4:3, but this time renders 362x272 pixels to make the most out of the height of the screen.

Thanks to cools for the tip-off.

Hmmmm, that's strange. I really enjoy the constant updates. It keeps me from having to check on everything everyday. This guy is amazing....I have to admitt I didn't think the emu would make it this far. It's great.

anyway, why make more viewpoints? didn't read the whole thing but does it effect the speed?

» Hey guys

Lets run around like chickens with our heads cut off in the comments section because we failed to even READ the news post! Yeah! That's a GREAT idea! Everyone join in and post something ignorant and oblivious! Gogogogogoogogo go!

Anyways, if any of you ever messed with the Zoom ratios in SNES9XTYL, you'll know that smaller viewing ratios improve the overall speed of the emulator because they decrease the amount of work for the CPU to process each frame on screen. This means that in the 2nd mode (320 x 240, 4:3) you would get the best framerate out of Daedalus, and in the third mode (362 x 272, :3) you would get the best of both worlds. The first mode (widescreen mode) is the most taxing on the PSP's system resources.

Then again, chances are if you didn't read the news post, you probably won't read this comment either.

Nice to see its still coming along, why is'nt there sound though? I dont get it.........

by to 15 - 2006-09-07 05:09
» to 15

There is no sound because the emulator already runs at a slow speed, imagine if the sound was also emulated....speed would decrease even more. Sound may be emulated in the future, but not until the emulator can actually run the graphical part of the games at almost full speed.

if they didnt give us hourly updates how would you know howmuch cooler the next one will be and how close it is to being released if you dont like it you can chose not to read it just stop whining about it because if your just gonna whine noone wants to hear what you think

I'm all for this project, but you have to admit at one point (say 2 months ago) they were going a little crazy with the updates. I doubt any other piece of homebrew had gotten such frequent and high volume of front page recognition and it is fact this isn't exactly playable yet. And if i see that stupid red 3d mario logo again i'm going to punch someone.

To the people who dont like hourly updates,

It's not hard to just skip it. If you want certain blogs only, just click on the category.

» its your problem

if you dont like all the consent updates thats your problem, no one elses..... programers spend hours, days, weeks, and some times months just to make games and programs for you to download for free, and the the thanks tey get is "im tierd of all thes updaes"...

if you dont like all the consent updates thats your problem, no one elses..... as for me i like being informed on the improvements and when the next release is going to be
