Update: Well, it didn't take long for an update to come out. Apparently, YoyoFR has fixed a sound issue in the Standard Version. This update is only for those who downloaded the Standard Version. If you're using the ME version, you don't need to download this release.

The homebrew community is having one of it's best times lately. After seeing the thundering response to Daedalus, I'm assuming that this release will simply blow the roof off! Yes, SnesPSP TYL 0.4 is out! After all the hype, it's here. And man, does it rock.

YoyoFR has just released his latest version of the most popular SNES emulator for the PSP. And it's got new features by the bucketloads. Let me quote him here, "It's not as polished as what I wanted, but hey, it's released after all ;-)"

So how about checking out the changelog? First, the new features:
  • SPC playback through openspc++.
  • Sound emulation moved to Media Engine.
  • New GUI with some sounds (beep). Default key combo for GUI access is now L+R
  • Have your own background and SPC music played in background when in GUI. Put them in logo.zip & music.zip.
  • Adhoc 2 players mode. Requires both players to have the same rom file.
  • Speed limiter in fps (ranging from 10 to 120fps).
  • Hack to help reading thin fonts in hi-res mode ("shake" the screen). Activate it from the Hack/Debug sub menu.
  • Minimalist txt file viewer (buggy).
  • Usb support : When in File Browser or Menu use R (right trigger).
  • SRAM is now saved if modified when accessing menu.
  • Minimalist 2 players adhoc netplay. Thanks to Chris Swindle for his netplay code in SMS.
  • Uses the great OSK from danzel.
Now the fixes:
  • Frame skipping (AUTO & fixed) better handled.
  • Import savestate from snes9xTYL.
  • Psp Accelerated Rendering issues (ff6 borders, small lines on left & right borders when using render!=1:1...)
  • Sourcecode clean-up (Not complete, still a bit messy)
There's still one small niggle though, the emulation is still slower than v0.2 in no sound mode. The problem is related to the new PSPSDK and internal changes in Emulator Core.

What good is a release without some screenshots? Well, here's a few to whet your appetite:

Two versions have been released, the standard version which runs in user mode, and the ME version, which runs in Kernel Mode. If you're on 1.50, download the ME version for better speed. If you're on 2.0 or above, be sure to download the standard version. The source code is also bundled.

Thanks to all the people who sent us an email regarding this new release.

Anyway, i'm mostly happy that they finally released the source WITH the binary. It was my biggest gripe. If sram was truly commented out, had they released the source with it i could have fixed it in 3 seconds. At least this time they were more honest... Now to actually test it out.

#21 / #32 - YES! You _NEED_ GTA and the GTA eloader to play homebrew on 2.01, 2.5 and 2.6 PSPs.

Sorry the only way to get homebrew to run on 2.0 and above is to get GTA. I know it can be annoying to have to buy a game you don't like just to play homebrew. Currently there are no loaders that work without it. Maybe you can find it used somewhere so you don't have to spend full price on a game you will not play that much.

by The Phool - 2006-05-07 12:04
» To 32, 21

YES, you need GTA to run homebrew on 2.6. Small price to pay in my opion (even if you don't like the game)

isn't it worth forty bucks to be able to play every nes, snes, game boy, lua, (n64 soon), ect... game ever? I'm thinkin so.

Anyway I love GTA so whatever.

Now on topic, I do love the 2 player support, BUT why is this Slower???

» READ THIS FIRST!

--------------------------------------------------------

You shoudl read this post before all the naysaying posts

--------------------------------------------------------

Some say this emulator is slower than previous versions: not true. I have both, you just have to set the settings correctly.

First of all, the default emulation settings are psp-accelerated with aprox software. Change this to psp-accelerated-with accu (Accurate) software.

This will make your games run ALOT faster. ie. in tyl.2c version, yoshis island (one of the slowest running games) runs now in tyl.4 at ~35 fps CONSTANT whereas in the previous, it only ran about 20, with all smoothing turned off, and was thus unplayable. Now, its actually playable.

So, again, change those default emulation settings to something like the above, and DONT turn sound emulation off, it slows things down (suprisingly).

-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks again to the TYL team, you guys do an amazing job, but maybe you should release some tips for some people who dont understand and flame right away.

Keep up the great work!

Can you play ad-hoc with a 1.5 PSP and a 2.0 PSP playing together? If so, how? I tried right now and both PSPs were at the screen that tells you to select a server or press triangle to return, not being able to connect to the game and play together. Has anyone tried out different firmware versions against each other yet?

» Thanks!

It figures. As soon as I updated to 2.70 something great like this comes out. :(

» Another Ad Hoc Emulator!

This makes:

DGen

NesterJ

SMS Plus

SNES9xTYL

by liquidtenmillion - 2006-05-07 12:14
» Number 45

Unfortunately, you are wrong.

On .3, i could run EVERY single game i attempted at around 55fps without any frameskip if i set the sound to 44khz.

However, on .4, with 2.6 psp, i cannot play games above 20FPS no matter WHAT settings i use. Using the exact same settings as .3 i get very slow emulation, using ANY other possible settings, i still can't get above 20.

There is DEFINATELY a problem in the USER mode version of this. The build has to be bad.

EVERYBODY who has user mode, you will see, this is FAR slower than .3 was. The fastest .4 is slower than the slowest .3 settings.

***** About it at the official snes9xtyl forums. This is far slower than .3 was. and the user mode is far slower than the 1.5 version. This is a bug that can be fixed. So ***** about it until they do it. ;)

This release sucks. I did exactly what #45 suggested and this crap crashed and reset my PSP 4 times already. I'm using 2.0 and eloader bock.

I also tried playing a 2 player wi-fi game with another 2.60 PSP and it wouldn't work either.

Did any of you test this before giving it praise? It probably works better on a 1.50 PSP but it sucks on 2.0 and up.

» No Update for ME users

I read on the article that this update is for "User Mode" users only. I still use version 0.2c because when I tried the first ME 0.3 version Chrono Trigger had issues like missing textures and the framerate going down during battles.

Is this true that the ME version 0.4 is still the same as ME version 0.3?

by liquidtenmillion - 2006-05-07 13:21
» It's true

On 1.5, it is the BEST release to date, and it is noticeably improved at everything. Very worth the upgrade.

On 2.01+, it is far slower than .3 was, and very buggy and crash prone. I would stick with .3 until either an upgrade to the eloader(more likely) or to the user mode.

Overally, it is very good if you are using 1.5.

Do not expect much speed improvement unless you are running this emulator on a 1.5 in full kernel mode. Consider how much stress and load is taken away from the main CPU leaving it more free time to process when the Media Engine is used for full sound emulation and then you will understand why running this emulator in User Mode will never allow it to come anywhere near to reaching it's full potential.

Anyone who updated their psp past 1.50 has no right to complain about speed.

Better put some thought into the next time you buy a crappy game that convinces you into updating your firmware to enjoy it for a week. If you want to stick with official, update requiring games, that's fine. But your right to complain about any game is instantly revoked. Real homebrew requires 1.50 or lower, anything else is a cheap hack.

It always crashes (PSP screen turns black and becomes unresponsive [can't L+R+Start back to the eboot loader, either]) whenever I change some settings and then press X to go back to the game.

» People do have a right to complain

Homebrew on ANY firmware is a cheap hack, so get out of your shell.

SNES9xTYL .3 was very fast, and user mode was as fast as ME when used with the correct sound settings, to the point where on my 1.5 user mode ran better than me mode did.

It's just this version of this homebrew that isn't as fast as it used to be.

yeah i finally found that final fantasy 6 game for snes. muhahaaha took 3 mins but hey, its all mine, got it patched to english too took another 3 mins dang it was ez.

If you have the me version (for 1.5 psps) you can attain a rock solid 60 fps on almost all mario games (super mario world 1, 2, 3) ~50 fps on donkey kong games, and yoshis island a finally playable ~35 fps.

As a rule, dont expect most snes games to be playable unless you have a 1.5 psp. You can do everything now with a 1.5 that you can with a 2.00+, like web browsing (links2, by raf), excluding macromedia flash, so maybe its time to downgrade :). But thats really up to you :P.

Also, please try not to flood the COMMENTS section with helprequests/problems, etc, go to the forum, or preferably the TYL site/forum and post your problems there. At least you'll have a chance of someone replying.

Great release guys, cant wait for the next (hopefully including a better sleep mode function :) )

Sony made all those firmware to prevent this emulators to run, you should have known that in the future it will be a lot harder to run an emulator if you updated your firmware. Thats why I have 2 1.5 psp's just incase one of them breaks. Never going to upgrade, if I want to play most of the games that are out right now, I will just buy the ps2 version of those games. 50 dollars for a psp port, no thanks.

The 0.4ME version for the 1.0-1.5 firmware runs like a dream.

At last full speed Final Fantasy III. (Speed hacks are needed for the battles though.)

I'm not sold on the new GUI though. I'd like an option to change the button combo to enter the GUI while a game is running. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied.

@103- running on accurate mode actually makes things slower....just use psp acelerated+apro x and you should be fine...the only game i am using acuratte mode is terragma because of some graphical glitches, but it runs at full speed anyway(50 fps, pal game)

and yoshi island runs at about 57 fps for me....also turning smothing off wont change a thing so just keep it on....and i am using sound at 44 to, maybe it can get faster if i low it own,but with 0.3 anything other than 44 screwed the sound.......

this release is pretty sad. i cant get any speed at all over 20 fps, whenever i try to turn on background music it hangs and shuts off my psp. I use Snex9x but its like really old one and i can get like 76 fps on super mario world and it loads zip files and such so im gonna continue to use it.

o yea and did i mention i use a 2.6 and i got psp radio and n64 emu and a ton more homebrew that work pretty much perfect. so yes we do have a right to complain. Not all of us purposely updated btw, because when i got my psp i thought it was a good thing and i was completely oblivious as to what it effected, I didnt know about homebrew yet, and it wasnt because the game told me to.

yoyofr92 has just released a quick fix to the latest release of SnesPSP_TYL non-ME, a SNES emulator for the PSP (see this news post for more information). This fix is for the usermode (2.0 up to 2.6 firmware) non-ME release of SnesPSP_TYL v0.4, now patched fixing a sound bug which caused certain speed/FPS reductions while emulating. Good work yoyofr92, keep it up!

This release is really polished. I'm trying to play FFVI on my 1.5 PSP. It gets great speed for the most part, but unfortunately at some parts it lags heavily, freezing for a moment with the number 3 appearing in a blue box briefly in the middle of the screen. It only seems to happen when I'm not doing anything, like during a cutscene, or when other characters are walking around and I'm standing still. None of the previous releases ever did this. Any ideas. Thanks a lot.

The ad-hoc is REALLY buggy. I have yet to get it to run on ANY roms. I keep trying but it is screwing up. I'm running two 2.6 PSPs right now. It keeps freezing after connecting and everything. The second player PSP starts to do something with the Mem stick, then the light stays on for a while, and then the PSP shuts off. Any solutions for this?

by red - 2006-05-07 16:49
» some things

I have noticed that the emu no longer accepts L+R as an ingame combo [in Super metroid, for example, it makes you aim up, but now it seems to cancel them both out] after remapping the menu to the nub.

And the spc of Starfox's Cornaria makes the emu crash. It will play during the ensuing bluescreen [all 10 seconds of it], but crashes nonetheless.

Some intelligent file filtering might also be a good idea, i accidentally BSOD'd off of a readme text file.

It also sees some of my folders as files; it made recovering old savestates very aggrivating.

Besides these small issues, I see a signifigant speed increase, to the point that SMetroid plays flawlessly, even with no frameskip. Great job! Can't wait to try out the multiplay!

IF you use 1.5, get version .4.

If you use 2.01-2.6, then get version .3. Version .3 is far faster than this when used on 2.01. There are bugs in .4 that prevent full speed. If you use .3, and set the sound rate to 44khz, you will get full speed on .3. On .4 you get slow speeds no matter what.

This has nothing to do with the lack of kernel mode, as the last version, .3, ran at perfect speeds without kernel mode, and this version cannot.

Super Mario RPG, as far as I know makes use of the FX Chip and is perfectly playable on the new Snes TYL 0.4 ME on my 1.5 firmware. In fact, I had to change a few settings to slow down the music and how fast Mario was walking. The fact is all games I have tried so far are at a playable speed including Super Mario World Yoshi, Mario RPG and even Dragon Ball. I notice that alot of complaints about speed always come down to user error so be sure to check your settings before complaining about the best Snes emulator on the Psp I have ever used.

There is still work to be done, it's not perfect yet, but this version is light years ahead of the last release. It's a killer app for the homebrew scene!

All but the largest / complicated roms run at a highly playable level.

Anyone who says it this is slower than previous versions is WRONG, this is the fastest SNES emu there is on PSP! If it's slow for you you have it incorrectly configured!

» You clearly don't know what you're talking about

So just shut up or learn before you talk. Either way the community is better off.

You have not used the user mode, or you have not played on 2.6. Therefore, read the whole thread before you post.

God damn.

» Loading Saved Files?

Hey, first off, thank you, this emulator is fantastic on my 1.5.

I have a question though. Whenever I try and load a saved game, it ends up having no sound. However, when I run the rom from the beginning, i.e. start over, everything's fine. Does anyone know what I could do to solve this?

Thanks for your time!

» Thanks

I am installing right now but am soo happy for the 2.0 adhoc support I would just like to say thanks and great work. I can't wait to see this on more homebrew.

I know you just made it adhoc compatible but I was just wondering if infranstructer is possible on this and on 2.0 since I have seen it on the quake port.

I can't believe I wasted my time reading through all 200+ posts. These guys have created one of, if not the absolute best, emulators for the PSP, and the amount of *****ing and moaning in this thread shocks me.

Many users are greatly appreciative of the efforts put forth by the development team, and they should be. I can't even begin to fathom the sheer number of hours that have gone into this homebrew. And yet, so many of you ***** because it's not good enough.

It's been said in here already, but I'll repeat it: NOBODY has a right to complain. At all. And not because "you upgraded to 2.6, and it's your own fault." You have no right to complain because these guys are doing this in their free time; for some reason, everybody seems to assume that they owe you something, but the reality is that they don't owe any of you a damn thing.

Until they charge for this product, take your money, and then overpromise and underdeliver, every single one of you whiners needs to shut the hell up. Nobody is forcing you to use this homebrew, and if you don't like it, don't use it.

» SHUT UP

Will evreyone stop moaning homebrew is a blessing not a curse do you moan if someone offers you free stuff ...NO then stop moaning about this awsome emulator!
