SnesPSP TYL 0.4 Released! *UPDATED* |
Listed in: Homebrew Development, Homebrew Emulators, News, Emulators Tags: psp homebrews
Ó

Update: Well, it didn't take long for an update to come out. Apparently, YoyoFR has fixed a sound issue in the Standard Version. This update is only for those who downloaded the Standard Version. If you're using the ME version, you don't need to download this release.
The homebrew community is having one of it's best times lately. After seeing the thundering response to Daedalus, I'm assuming that this release will simply blow the roof off! Yes, SnesPSP TYL 0.4 is out! After all the hype, it's here. And man, does it rock.
YoyoFR has just released his latest version of the most popular SNES emulator for the PSP. And it's got new features by the bucketloads. Let me quote him here, "It's not as polished as what I wanted, but hey, it's released after all ;-)"
So how about checking out the changelog? First, the new features:
- SPC playback through openspc++.
- Sound emulation moved to Media Engine.
- New GUI with some sounds (beep). Default key combo for GUI access is now L+R
- Have your own background and SPC music played in background when in GUI. Put them in logo.zip & music.zip.
- Adhoc 2 players mode. Requires both players to have the same rom file.
- Speed limiter in fps (ranging from 10 to 120fps).
- Hack to help reading thin fonts in hi-res mode ("shake" the screen). Activate it from the Hack/Debug sub menu.
- Minimalist txt file viewer (buggy).
- Usb support : When in File Browser or Menu use R (right trigger).
- SRAM is now saved if modified when accessing menu.
- Minimalist 2 players adhoc netplay. Thanks to Chris Swindle for his netplay code in SMS.
- Uses the great OSK from danzel.
- Frame skipping (AUTO & fixed) better handled.
- Import savestate from snes9xTYL.
- Psp Accelerated Rendering issues (ff6 borders, small lines on left & right borders when using render!=1:1...)
- Sourcecode clean-up (Not complete, still a bit messy)
What good is a release without some screenshots? Well, here's a few to whet your appetite:
Two versions have been released, the standard version which runs in user mode, and the ME version, which runs in Kernel Mode. If you're on 1.50, download the ME version for better speed. If you're on 2.0 or above, be sure to download the standard version. The source code is also bundled.
Thanks to all the people who sent us an email regarding this new release.

****ing dumbass...
Anyway, i'm mostly happy that they finally released the source WITH the binary. It was my biggest gripe. If sram was truly commented out, had they released the source with it i could have fixed it in 3 seconds. At least this time they were more honest... Now to actually test it out.

#21 / #32 - YES! You _NEED_ GTA and the GTA eloader to play homebrew on 2.01, 2.5 and 2.6 PSPs.

isn't it worth forty bucks to be able to play every nes, snes, game boy, lua, (n64 soon), ect... game ever? I'm thinkin so.
Anyway I love GTA so whatever.
Now on topic, I do love the 2 player support, BUT why is this Slower???

It's back to .3 for me.

You shoudl read this post before all the naysaying posts
--------------------------------------------------------
Some say this emulator is slower than previous versions: not true. I have both, you just have to set the settings correctly.
First of all, the default emulation settings are psp-accelerated with aprox software. Change this to psp-accelerated-with accu (Accurate) software.
This will make your games run ALOT faster. ie. in tyl.2c version, yoshis island (one of the slowest running games) runs now in tyl.4 at ~35 fps CONSTANT whereas in the previous, it only ran about 20, with all smoothing turned off, and was thus unplayable. Now, its actually playable.
So, again, change those default emulation settings to something like the above, and DONT turn sound emulation off, it slows things down (suprisingly).
-----------------------------------------------------
Thanks again to the TYL team, you guys do an amazing job, but maybe you should release some tips for some people who dont understand and flame right away.
Keep up the great work!

all have Ad Hoc! Just awesome! All that's left is RIN (and M64 and Daedalus, but it's a low priority for those).

On .3, i could run EVERY single game i attempted at around 55fps without any frameskip if i set the sound to 44khz.
However, on .4, with 2.6 psp, i cannot play games above 20FPS no matter WHAT settings i use. Using the exact same settings as .3 i get very slow emulation, using ANY other possible settings, i still can't get above 20.
There is DEFINATELY a problem in the USER mode version of this. The build has to be bad.
EVERYBODY who has user mode, you will see, this is FAR slower than .3 was. The fastest .4 is slower than the slowest .3 settings.
***** About it at the official snes9xtyl forums. This is far slower than .3 was. and the user mode is far slower than the 1.5 version. This is a bug that can be fixed. So ***** about it until they do it. ;)

I also tried playing a 2 player wi-fi game with another 2.60 PSP and it wouldn't work either.
Did any of you test this before giving it praise? It probably works better on a 1.50 PSP but it sucks on 2.0 and up.
Reply
Is this true that the ME version 0.4 is still the same as ME version 0.3?
Reply
On 2.01+, it is far slower than .3 was, and very buggy and crash prone. I would stick with .3 until either an upgrade to the eloader(more likely) or to the user mode.
Overally, it is very good if you are using 1.5.

Reply
and #84, there is a gigantic change in .4ME, the update is only for standard users because there was a sound bug.

Better put some thought into the next time you buy a crappy game that convinces you into updating your firmware to enjoy it for a week. If you want to stick with official, update requiring games, that's fine. But your right to complain about any game is instantly revoked. Real homebrew requires 1.50 or lower, anything else is a cheap hack.

SNES9xTYL .3 was very fast, and user mode was as fast as ME when used with the correct sound settings, to the point where on my 1.5 user mode ran better than me mode did.
It's just this version of this homebrew that isn't as fast as it used to be.
Reply
o is the speed faster han the other snes emus cause i am noticing major slowdowns in this final fantasy game with another emu but frameskip is only sooo helpful
Reply
if ppl want 100% success with homebrew they should get a 1.5
cant afford one then sell your 2.XX and save some money and get one
awsome work

BTW, I have 1.5 and is using the ME version. I think everyone's correct about the SNESTYL running slow at non 1.5 user since its not running in optimal kernel mode!

Speed Issues / Information
------------------------------------------
THIS GAME WILL NOT RUN AT FULL POTENTIAL UNLESS YOU HAVE A 1.5 PSP.
Ok, now thats out of the way, see my previous post #45, on how to up your speed. That works for both versions (me and standard versions).
If you have the me version (for 1.5 psps) you can attain a rock solid 60 fps on almost all mario games (super mario world 1, 2, 3) ~50 fps on donkey kong games, and yoshis island a finally playable ~35 fps.
As a rule, dont expect most snes games to be playable unless you have a 1.5 psp. You can do everything now with a 1.5 that you can with a 2.00+, like web browsing (links2, by raf), excluding macromedia flash, so maybe its time to downgrade :). But thats really up to you :P.
Also, please try not to flood the COMMENTS section with helprequests/problems, etc, go to the forum, or preferably the TYL site/forum and post your problems there. At least you'll have a chance of someone replying.
Great release guys, cant wait for the next (hopefully including a better sleep mode function :) )

At last full speed Final Fantasy III. (Speed hacks are needed for the battles though.)
I'm not sold on the new GUI though. I'd like an option to change the button combo to enter the GUI while a game is running. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied.

and yoshi island runs at about 57 fps for me....also turning smothing off wont change a thing so just keep it on....and i am using sound at 44 to, maybe it can get faster if i low it own,but with 0.3 anything other than 44 screwed the sound.......

o yea and did i mention i use a 2.6 and i got psp radio and n64 emu and a ton more homebrew that work pretty much perfect. so yes we do have a right to complain. Not all of us purposely updated btw, because when i got my psp i thought it was a good thing and i was completely oblivious as to what it effected, I didnt know about homebrew yet, and it wasnt because the game told me to.

And the spc of Starfox's Cornaria makes the emu crash. It will play during the ensuing bluescreen [all 10 seconds of it], but crashes nonetheless.
Some intelligent file filtering might also be a good idea, i accidentally BSOD'd off of a readme text file.
It also sees some of my folders as files; it made recovering old savestates very aggrivating.
Besides these small issues, I see a signifigant speed increase, to the point that SMetroid plays flawlessly, even with no frameskip. Great job! Can't wait to try out the multiplay!

What can I do to speed up the game play?
I thought I saw something, but I'm not sure what to turn it up to (if i was even looking at the right thing).

This emulator is just awesome.
The fps are boosting away and the wifi-multiplayer support is out from heaven.
THX YA a lot.

I found that if we facing each other (not side by side) and the PSPs were in line of sight the 2player adhoc worked very well, no interuptions. When a leg or arm or the line of sight was broken there was a hiccup, but it resumed just fine once it re-connected.
Thanks so much this is the best damn thing, wheeeee heeeeee heeeeee!

I'm seriously impressed that these guys included pretty much everything I wanted the previous releases to have AND added a few things that make it a little sweeter than y32. Now I can't wait for new releases of this badboy.

Learn how to type you moron. BTW, us 1.5 users can expect full speed eveuntually, the rest of you can 'elts wait for the psp2.'

IF you use 1.5, get version .4.
If you use 2.01-2.6, then get version .3. Version .3 is far faster than this when used on 2.01. There are bugs in .4 that prevent full speed. If you use .3, and set the sound rate to 44khz, you will get full speed on .3. On .4 you get slow speeds no matter what.
This has nothing to do with the lack of kernel mode, as the last version, .3, ran at perfect speeds without kernel mode, and this version cannot.

The rest looks good, thanks!

Super Mario RPG, as far as I know makes use of the FX Chip and is perfectly playable on the new Snes TYL 0.4 ME on my 1.5 firmware. In fact, I had to change a few settings to slow down the music and how fast Mario was walking. The fact is all games I have tried so far are at a playable speed including Super Mario World Yoshi, Mario RPG and even Dragon Ball. I notice that alot of complaints about speed always come down to user error so be sure to check your settings before complaining about the best Snes emulator on the Psp I have ever used.

SNES 4 ME Rock.
I have been playing this for ages, no crashing.
It is the best emulator up-to-date.
With my favourite Cheat Mode and 2 Player.
I am so happy.

PS. I also love the sounds in the About section of the eboot.
This is the most fasted and advanced one.
142. » Can you go screew yourself.
The games go amzingly on a 1.5.
Also the chips do not matter.
Please before you make any stupid comments, check the requirements for the N64.
Once you have checked, then tell me it is not possible.

You are so far from wrong... On .3 i get 54 FPS in Yoshi's Island, and on .4 i only get 34FPS. .4 is just slower in every aspect than .3 was for 2.6 users. If you set sound properly on .3 then you can get almost comparable speeds to .3me, and FAAARRR faster speeds than on .4.

Yoshi is still not really playable ..... (with 4me on 1.5)
it uses maximum frameskip (10) and still not full fps...
it means 5FPS are stretched to 50FPS, this is stuttering so much I can´t enjoy it...
Up to now I couldn´t see lots of speed improvements... anyway the GUI is absolutely cool ....

I just wanted to post to congratulate the authors of SnesPSP TYL 0.4, it's fantastic!
There is still work to be done, it's not perfect yet, but this version is light years ahead of the last release. It's a killer app for the homebrew scene!
All but the largest / complicated roms run at a highly playable level.
Anyone who says it this is slower than previous versions is WRONG, this is the fastest SNES emu there is on PSP! If it's slow for you you have it incorrectly configured!

You have not used the user mode, or you have not played on 2.6. Therefore, read the whole thread before you post.
God damn.

I have a question though. Whenever I try and load a saved game, it ends up having no sound. However, when I run the rom from the beginning, i.e. start over, everything's fine. Does anyone know what I could do to solve this?
Thanks for your time!

Many users are greatly appreciative of the efforts put forth by the development team, and they should be. I can't even begin to fathom the sheer number of hours that have gone into this homebrew. And yet, so many of you ***** because it's not good enough.
It's been said in here already, but I'll repeat it: NOBODY has a right to complain. At all. And not because "you upgraded to 2.6, and it's your own fault." You have no right to complain because these guys are doing this in their free time; for some reason, everybody seems to assume that they owe you something, but the reality is that they don't owe any of you a damn thing.
Until they charge for this product, take your money, and then overpromise and underdeliver, every single one of you whiners needs to shut the hell up. Nobody is forcing you to use this homebrew, and if you don't like it, don't use it.
