PSX-P Alpha Release Tomorrow! [Update]

PSX ImageA French PSP website, PSP-Generation has informed us that the alpha build of Yoshihiro's PSX emulator will be released tomorrow! Before we go into the exciting news, I would just like to remind everyone that this is an Alpha build and may not run many games at all.

If you recall, PSMonkey / Nexis2600 released the first N64 emulator and it could only play a few demos with poor framerate. So, if you are expecting to play a Final Fantasy game on this emulator tomorrow, I would suggest brining those thoughts down as it most likely will not be playable.

As my High School French is fading away, I managed to grab some important information from the site. This early build will be released with the ability to use ISO and BIN files - just need to worry about getting a big enough memroy stick! The emulator will be released tomorrow at approximately 8:00 PM. I'm assuming this is the time at which it will be in France / Europe at the time, so that will translate into - 2:00 PM EST.

Update: Seems as if there was already a video uploaded of the emulator in motion! Huge thanks to MrDank for taking the video (don't ask him for the emulator) and for telling us about it! You can watch the teaser video and one of gameplay videos below:

Update 2: Added two more videos of PSXP in action, this time with Tekken 2 and Ridge Racer 1

» FINALLY! Someone's working on a PSX emu.

It's about time someone is working on a PSX emu. Here, everyones trying to make an N64 emu, yet no one is working on a PSX emu, which would have a better chance of being playable. The alpha release probably won't work so great, but lets hope in the future that this emu becomes as hard-worked on as Daedalus, because if so, maybe it could become playable.

Besides, a lot more people own a PSX than an N64... I personally thought PSX was a better system (RPGS).

-L3 R3 Button

-R2 L2

by JCMC - 2006-09-23 12:20
» @14

There is no L3 or R3 buttons on the PSX. Those two buttons were introduced in the PS2, I believe. The Sound button and Screen button could be used as L2 and R2, but it would be a akward. The two analog sticks aren't required for all games. FF7 doesn't use them.

Great start at a emulator, but I'll wait until its at playable speeds or for the official one by $ony.

» psx-p :)

hmm this is good news, great news infact especially if it gets running to a playable speed which i think is very possible due to the fact sony are making an official emulator. i think in the long run this might harm sony sales in umd games...but memory stick sales...particularly larger capacity sticks will fly off shelves.

by backdrop - 2006-09-23 12:33
» Why the hostility in these threads?

I've only been here (QJ.net) for a week and I'm amazed at how many of the comments come off as rude or plain vicious. Why don't you just enjoy the fact that some people actually try to use their brain for constructive stuff - like programming all these wonderful stuff for your hardware.

Imagine the expertise it takes to pull off some of these things - despite Sony's efforts to prevent them. A little gratitude is the least one should give.

Lastly - who gives a **** about timezones??? The guys running this site are clearly working at maximum speed without us paying them (there are new publications popping out constantly here) - if you don't like to get the latest info on the PSP stuff, go to a site that fits you better.

» cool i guess

This is nice and all but I think I will wait for the sony one. First off it will work much better since it is being programed by professionals with official tools.

Secondly Sony will most likely stream line the games to make the file size the smallest it can be to run so no need for a huge iso file.

Last but not least they will have a list of games that run on it. Unlike this where it is pretty much trial and error as to what games will play. Although it wouldn't take me more than 5min to download a PS1 iso I don't want to have to download a large iso file just to find out it doesn't work.

Don't get me wrong I have great respect for all developers and the time and effort they put into their creations. It is just that this is not something I am really excited about.

'this is to show those who say "oh it's a fake" or "it'll never come out" that it's actually here, look see...'

also, maybe in one of the other articles, at least somewehre, they say it HASN'T got a complete dynarec : this means it is going to run slowly...

and it runs slowly, basically at about 4 fps or so... maybe less in fact.

but he mentions that tekken1 tekken2 and tekken 3 all run... it will release at 8pm on sunday french time, that's 7pm gmt... you work it out from there.

i'm excited! hopefully they'll be able to do a cda-mp3 hack so that i can just put in mp3's rather than cd music... if not i'll just delete the cd music

by anantha92 - 2006-09-23 15:04

yea L2/R2 might be a problem but not many of the more popular gams like FFVII use the left analog. L3/R3 who cares unless you wanna play ape escape. Tekkens dont use it either so thats some good news. I hope sony comes up with a cheap addon for their emulator who through usb adds on the L2/ R2 and the left analog. Many thanks Yoshiro and SonyXtem for brining some final evicdence of a good PS1 emulator. If sony does make taht addon, amybe you guys and incoporate that in your latter releases.

I hope the source is released or made available within some repository. The community will be able to quickly improve the speed of this very promising emulator.

The fact that the PSP and PSOne share many similarities could lead to almost natively running games using static recompilation which would result in good speed.

PSPU prolly didnt want to post it because of how badly they get flamed when they post a rumor (even though they say it's a rumor) and it falls through and the community gets mad so I can't blame them, but this looks great and can't wait to try it. by ideadude - 2006-09-23 17:45
» idea for L2 R3 etc

How about normally its the analog stick is the left stickand all the buttons are the same as on psX but select on the psx(which is barely uesd) will be moved to the screen button. Then when you hold select The analog means left and things like that and when holding select if you press a certin buttion it brings you to the emus menu pause thing.

Thats one idea

by akuma2099 - 2006-09-23 17:48
» whatever

@36 yes Sony will charge for the games but they will work better than this emulator and the file size will be a whole lot smaller than a full iso. I think I can afford 5 or 10 bucks for a game that will work rather than waiting for some glitch ridden emulator that may never run at full speed.

People who say I will never upgrade. That's fine for you but I have two PSPs one is a 1.5 for all my homebrew and another that I keep updated with the latest firmware. So while you are battling the glitches, waiting for the next small upgrade that may never come, and hoping that out of the 5 games you try maybe 1 will work halfway decent I will be playing my games at full speed and supporting the further development of the PSP. Also if sony is trying to make money from their emulator and the sell of the games. So how using this any different than using UMD isos since they are both taking money from sony?

» I'll believe it when I see it.

I just don't have much faith in Yoshi due to have has happened in the past.

Before somebody says something like "Shut up, it isn't like you are a programmer" keep in mind that I do have some coding experience, I just have yet to make anything for the PSP. In fact I haven't even made anything all that much more complicated than Breakaway. Well except 1 game I made in Highschool in pascal that was based on Red Dwarf. It was surprisingly fun, wish I still had the disc I put it on. Bah, I have gone off on some nostalgic tangent now, I should stop typing.

by Enclave - 2006-09-23 18:31
» Oh and #61

How is it taking money from Sony if you are ripping the ISOs from your own games? That is what I plan to do with my PSX games. I'm actually quite against piracy, I'm however even more against paying for a game I already own.

Oh and due to the similarities in the PSP and PSX getting a full speed highly compatible emulator on it actually isn't outside the realm of reason. It should be much easier to accomplish than N64 emulation.

by ... - 2006-09-23 18:38
» I agree with akuma2099,

The official ps1 emulator will run games without having to worry about crashes, frame drops etc. I welcome any attempt to create an emulator, but I'll throw a couple of bucks here and there towards sony to get a couple of ps1 games running perfectly on my psp. I'd rather not buy games that I already own, but hopefully they'll keep the prices somewhat decent ($5 - $10). Also, people and their ISO loaders need to stop (the ones who don't own the games). ;), you are only hurting the company that are making your games....and killing your memory card a lot quicker as well...

You do know that if you play the official Sony downloads which will run off the memory stick it will wear out the memory stick just as fast as if you rip your own ISOs. It will have to read off the memory stick rather often after all so really that point you tried to make there is kinda null.

However I do agree with you about dirty pirates, they need to stop that crap and actually buy their games. But like I said before, like hell I am shelling out an additional $10 american for a game I already own, sorry not going to happen.

To all of those saying they can't wait for this to be released, why?

Although I really appreciate someone working on a Psp Psx emulator, I am under no illusions and know that when it is released, it will not be playable and will probably run about 5fps.

To those saying they would rather use the official Sony Psx emulator, you do know that it wouldn't even exist if not for homebrew.

If not for homebrew, Sony could have gotten away sitting on their asses doing even less to improve the features of the Psp. Sony are only releasing the Psx emulator to save their own asses, they really don't give a f*** about their users / customers. They give you what they want, not what you wish for.

» Memory Stick Wear-out

Reply to 69/71/72, Yes flash memory units can get corrupted bits after as little as 10,000-100,000 writes to the unit. I believe that read operations are not as harmful as constantly writing and re-writing (ie re-flashing) to the chip, so you might want to disable "auto-saves" ;^). I know I don't re-write my memory sticks often enough to cause data-loss within the near future.

People say "sonys emulator will come out soon" blablabla.

Then you need to upgrade.. And I don't think a downgrader for 3.0 will come out for the next 10 years!!

This is free and you keep 1.5! Sony will surely charge you for every games! So stfu and be thankful that someone's working on it... It's amazing that one man can do this
