PSP Slim Mag: what's in store for the Homebrew scene? |
Ó
Edward Johnson, creator of the Digiplay Games Portal for the Playstation Portable, has just sent us an email about an article from the official PSP magazine from UK - PSP: The Official Guidebook by Future Publishing, we'd reckon, though we could be mistaken. The said article has a very interesting passage about the PSP Slim, speculating (and possibly hinting) at something big that would hit the homebrew scene, and soon.
The article's passage according to Johnson reads as follows:
Sony is obviously tight-lipped when it comes to security, and even tighter-lipped when it comes to security measures. Given its aggressive track record and serious work to combat hackers and pirates, it seems likely the PSP Slim and Lite will have something big up it's sleeve. And given the hackers track record, it won't be long before we find out what.
If Sony does indeed have something big in store for PSP security measures, what would this mean for the homebrew scene? We'll find out soon enough when it's released this September. The PSP Slim arrives in Europe early next month and Japan will have theirs on September 20. Watch out for updates.

It either stays the same, because the new one is not hacked, or it grows, because it is.
Isn't that a bit of a quagmire for Sony? If they scare off the homebrewers, that'll cut into their sells. It won't be the new users who are going to purchase the PSP-2000, but the current users.
you're just jealous, because you would've taken first, but i shunted your eunuch ass.
you're just jealous because you would've taken the first spot, but i shunted your eunuch ass.
this is gonna be so funny, sony so convincedence about its not hackible, i,m shure there will be a way, there always will be, hardware or software.
Most people probably buy a psp to play games. Majority probably don't even care about homebrewers beside pirating games onto their memory card.
im jealous of your stupidity
Is the slim that much better?? I will stick with the old one...
Sony has underestimated the appeal of homebrew. What other hacking scene has gotten as much attention by major media outlets??? name it.
(seriously homebrew wasn't just this little fad, it was and still is a revolution in handheld gaming and customization.)
Wow you can plug this into a tv and finally they've allowed usb charging, big whoop.
If the games still suck, who gives a *****. And yes, I know syphon filter and metal gear and some others have been reallly good, but overall psp games are gay.
To be exact, the new PSP does not have any firmware at all. Everything is built in like the game and watch in our childhood, or comes from nowhere but heaven.
The USB link is in effect to link your PSP to some mysterious computer controlled by Sony where everything is *censored* before they ever reach your memory stick, before you wonder why the USB bus could be that slower than a RS-232.
If you have something to copy to PSP which Sony doesn't like, you will got a CRC error or prompt you have a faulty USB cable, etc.
So don't bother hack it.
This will indeed have a significant impact on the homebrew scene. It will take TWO weeks to crack the initial PSP Slim firmware instead of one.
you're both just jealous 'cause i did your mom's and i'm not your dad, that crazy drunk guy is. that sucks. my kids drive bmws, not tercels.

Memory card readers do exist you know? U could always use ur old psp to put stuff on ur memory card or ur sony camera or whatever device that uses these cards. I doubt they'll do crc or md5 tests to check the contents of your memory card. That would just be privacy infringement and they would be wasting resources for their new piece of hardware. Don't u know u can change the crc/md5 just by hex editing one byte in the code? Your theory just wouldn't work.
well i was talking to a few people on a PSP forum and they believe its because the new PSP wont be able to support 1.50. this puts a damper on all the homebrewers, hackers, whatever. im sure the hackers will find a way but itll be a lloonngg time before they find a way to make the slim able to support homebrew
You could find an exploit and instead of going to 1.5 go straight to 3.6 OE or w/e you want to call it.
But they have to find the exploit.
Sure it is, but what's NOT ridiculous for companies like this?
In the theory, they don't ever think about what's CRC, MD5 or SHA-256 if you care; they just block the file from reaching the card.
Of course, they will need many staff to do the monitoring then.
Just think the theory as a replica of the Great Firewall anyway.
But the card reader flaw is right. Thanks for the tip.
