PSMonkey Says Goodbye To Homebrew Scene

Posted Sep 2, 2006 at 10:06PM EST by QJ Staff

Ó

Sadly, a well-known member of the PSP Homebrew community has to leave the scene. According to a public letter that PSmonkey has posted on his website, he is forced to stop releasing homebrews to the public because of his new job with one of the major publishers of PSP games. He did not name the company that he now works for, but he did note that his contract restricts him from making further contributions to the homebrew community. Bye!

However, he did say that his two most popular projects Iris (an FPS) and Sandbox (a physics demo) will be taken up by fellow-enthusiasts, as stated in part of his letter.

"Yes Iris 0.3 is still coming. I have a few people interested in redoing the game like I intended as well as continue to progress KohKae engine.

Sandbox is also not going anywhere. One of this scene's great coders is going to pick up where I left off to continue the game.

Regarding my other projects, I personally will continue my fight to conker N64 & DD emulation on the PSP. M64 will still continue but no releases will be made public. I will how ever make my DD research public once finished.

ngPsp 1.3 ( the neogeo pocket emu) is still coming, A friend is gonna finish writing a GUI for my latest version.

Other then that, sadly all my other work is now dead (new fps will migrate into Iris 0.3, beat-em-up is dead).

That's it.

I will still lurk around and try to help people out with technical info but it will be sad to no longer work on homebrew for the scene I loved so much. Yet who knows what the future will bring and maybe I will end up being in a position that it's legally possible for me to do homebrew again."

So until then, we say "thank you" for all the tips and most of all, for the games.

WTF is your problem, this guy was the first who inspired people to make emulators when he worked on a N64 emulator, your such a f*cking jerk. I'd like to see you try coding a emulator, better yet, a N64 Emulator.

Iris sucked, sandbox sucked, and youre N64 emulator sucked. You made useless updates all the time, and Im glad youre gone. I realize I havent done anything for the homebrew scene, but I didnt hype it up and post constant updates without anything to try out like he did. and #4 he was not the first to inspire people to make emulators. He was not the first to code a emulator for PSP ya dink.

#8, Bryan: who cares if he overhypes his homebrew(I don't think he does) at least he is coding something. What have you done for this community aside from being a flamer?

#11, dave davidson: do you have any proof that he is working in a fast food restaurant? If not then you are just jealous that he is working in a gaming company while you are working in a fast food restaurant or you are without a job.

I don't understand what is so good about flaming coders. Do the noobs/haters feel something good from flaming coders and they go to a Nirvana like state or something? Or is it that since they are living a boring life in their parents basement they want to flame coders to get some laughts?

If someone can explain it to me please do so.

I can't say that I have ever used any of his software. Iris was not something I was interested in and neither was the ngPSP thing since the system itself sucked. As for the n64 emu it might have been nice about 6 months from now but I never tried it since it was really early in the development stages. Anyway enjoy your new job.

1) The company I am going to is one of the top 5 publishers/developers in this industry. The company has developed many games that have sold over 1 million copies. I wont mention the studio because it will probably get me in serious trouble plus might lead to issues with sony. I'm not going to f* things up since they rescued me from another horible DS game.

2) My contract has a "Non Compeditive Clause" which states that all of my work (done on their time or mine) is their property. Sucks but I had no way around it. Most big name studios have this. My old employer was more easy going on me since my boss knew I was a big fan of homebrew (my gba homebrew got me my 1st industry job).

3) Iris (a bit faster private build) is what got me my job in the first place. My work portfolio is filled with crap licensed kids games for gba, ds & ps1. So I used iris to help give me a better chance at getting in.

4) I still will hang around the scene but I wont be releasing anything. Its up to the people I passed my work onto to continue. I hope that they personly do.

Anyways good luck on the gaming industry , you're probably gonna be one of the most experienced workers since probably less than 5% have experience on making homebrew games.

Video game companies hire pirates ALL the time, it goes like this:

Excuse me 1337h4x0r intern00b, I work at the Human resources department over at EA games, and we here at EA are very impressed with your illegal work as of late, it's been mentioned to me (by the president of the company) that your skills would be of great benefit to us ... (just don't tell anyone who we are ever) keep in mind 1337h4x0r that you arent allowed to ever make any more illegal eboots for anyone ever again because we own you now, AND thank god for that because we're SO glad to have you as out newest addition. too Bad people like zx-81, and ahman couldn't be turned to the darkside... I mean hired, but one monkey is worth all the rest of them right? I mean everyone on the internet plays iris of course, and according to our numbers iris is going to be the number 1 game of the new milennium.

remember tho we OWN YOU, and you're NOT ALLOWED to release ANYTHING EVER AGAIN. yea we rock and you're our lil beeotch got it

Iris was an okay game, but it was incomplete (at least the build that I was playing).

How easy it is to criticize peoples work, specially anonymously when they can't defend themselves properly. Although many of you may not have a life don't assume everyone is like you, work, schoo, partners & friends take up time, now add coding homebrew for a bunch of freeloders into the mix and you got yourself a pretty busy person. I know most of you don't even know what your talking about when you disrespect someone or your just taking out all of your frustration on someone else, so thats why I don't even get upset at little *****es like yourselves, I actually feel sorry for your pathetic existences, getting smacked around by everyone you know must have scared all of you for life poor little ignorant pests. Anyways enough of that, congrats monkey, never tried any of your homebrew, but it was appreciated none the less, Best of luck to you.

I don't know why people always assume posters here haven't had gf's but having said that, having a gf is certainly not the be all and end all so many make it out to be. Indeed, at times gf's can be nothing but a pain in the ass so please keep your assumptions to yourself in future.

To people that ask why pspmonkey did not disclose his company's name or the spot he is in right now is most likely because he signed a contract with a NDA (Non-disclosure agreement).

He has to give up on his homebrew job is because he also signed the contract that needed him to stop doing anything that interact with game making just for the company's sake.

TAKING AWAY WHAT COULD BE THIS GUY'S ONLY HOBBEY???!!!

Another reason why I hate Sony as a buisiness. Yes their hardware is top-notch, but their guys in suits are a bunch of fairys. I have started to develop a deep loathing for Sony shortly after my PS2, a little under a year old started not reading DVD's/Games. Then their virus's on their music CD's. Noww the incessant releases of firmware "updates". The only reason I bought a PSP in firstplace was because of it's hardware capabilities. Unless they release something absolutley must-have, I won't be purchasing anymore Sony products. PHUCK SONY!

Don´t you see? Sony is the "hype machine" always overhyping about their new hardware/software, so they need Psmonkey as he is the "hype machine" in the homebrew side, to make together the "mega-ultra-final-hype" to the Cell processor on the PS3.

I was suspecting about this forces joining months ago.

PS: posting someother's IP in a public forum reveals some things. 1- PSmonkey is a bad mod, IP's are only visible by mods for some purposse different from that 2- He has no argumentation. 3- He has no skills related to hack someother's computer by himself. 4- He has no humor sense, Illegal Machine (#50) wrote the funniest thing i have read today.

I am very sad to see you leave the scene, as you were one of the most talented developers out there, and you made phenomonal progress on Monkey64 (and really, native emulation is the ONLY way we'll get full speed w/sound, Daedelus will never get there, because it's merely a port) before all the stupid 12-year-old dumbasses opened their mouths to turn your update posts into rivers of flame. I'm glad to see you didn't leave because of the abuse (that's what popped to mind when I saw the headline), but because you've found a great oppurtunity to put your hard work to a more immediate end for yourself. I wish you best of luck at your new post, and try to ignore those folks here with IQ's smaller than their shoe size that are polluting this thread (especially those who rhyme with "mind full of beans").

# WOW, I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK!Guest 2006-09-03 16:29
I am reallly at a loss for words. This is what happens when people with talent sign contracts with a game company. They obviously see something in him they like so lets not knock his talent 'cause he's going to be making the money. My initial thought was EA as well but who knows, the company he's working for is not important. The contract deal that he signed is very common withtin the industry. The absolute worst case I ever heard of with a contract along these lines of the company owning intellectual rights, is with Disney. They have a contract in which they own certain creative aspects even AFTER you leave them for a certain amout of time. Anyway, as far as PSMonkey leaving sure he could do releases behind thier back and all that but why risk your job, right? Im sure alot of talented homebrew creators could get jobs with big game companys but its a double edged sword. Your turning your back on the homebrew community and trying to embrace the "mainstream" gaming public. Half of which is going to download an ISO of your latest game for free anyway. So you know what EVERYONE WINS. PSMonkey gets paid to make games. The "mainstream" buys a great game and pirates and the homebrew community download the ISO for free anyway. Anyone else agree?

# I am ashamed!vertigociel 2006-09-03 16:38
Who here can blame PSmonkey for leaving the scene for a job, when he coded homebrew for FREE, and was met with almost nothing but flame from those he produced his programs for? Really, it's jealous little coder wannabes here like Mind Full of Beans and Bullet Time who can't stand to see someone way more dedicated and talented than them actually break in to the business that are the reason we don't already have full-speed native N64 emulators and commercial-calibre homebrew shooters: why would developers want to come to the PSP scene when all they get for their hard work is immature intellectually-inadequate idiophiles flaming them? Mind Full of Beans, Bullet Time, you disgust me. Keep your hate to yourselves, please.

Lol, if it's "in the top 5", then it is #5. If it were 4,3, or maybe even 2, he would say "top 4, top 3, top 2" respectively. If it were #1 he would say "THE number one"... psychological goodness.

Pfft. No big loss.

Now if the homebrew community loses someone like Booster or Ahman, then i'd start getting worried.

Monkey, if you are telling the truth, good luck with your job. Hopefully you'll be able to create some cool software.

And if not, well i'm not too bothered about it either way.

Don't worry mate, we've already found out who he is.

Name & adress. It's a small step from here to find out

the company he's working for. He said top-5, so there

could only be 5 options (If he isn't lying to us again).

If he's really working @ the top-5, than the

next release I'll make will be under his name..

Well, how misinformed can you possibly be? Daedalus was already up and running before he started his project, just that StrmnNrmn hadn't released it...Go do your homework!

Also, Psmonkey contributed nothing to Daedalus, but StrmnNrmn past on information that enabled Psmonkey to get out of wireframe mode, and start showing something.

I am not saying that he isn't a half decent coder, i am sure he is not too shabby, what i am saying is that he wan't in the same league as StrmnNrmn when it comes to coding.

StrmnNrmn's emu was built from the ground up by himself many years ago, he's ported it over to the PSP and is presently optimizing everything to best use the psp's hardware, not too disimilar to PSmonkey taking Project 64 and porting that to take advantage of the hardware...

I think without a shadow of a doubt that Daedalus will attain top speed with sound in some games within the next 6 months.. I don't believe Psmonkey's was ever going to get anywhere near that due to his obvious lack of experience with the N64 hardware compared to StrmnNrmn's extensive knowledge of building the PC emu from scratch.

This is not a slight on Psmonkey, i have already said that i am sure he's an adequate coder, and i really do wish him the best of luck in his new job....I look forward to seeing a wireframe FPS on my PSP soon! Lol

Good luck for the future and thanks for being part of the scene!

Harry the Hampster.

Illegal Machine and Erik R., and the rest of the people should be ashamed of yourselves, your disrespecting a developer who coded for hours and hours to help out the community, and if i were him, i would go to the darkside as you nerds say. And you should also take notice, that homebrew developers arent given any devkit or training from sony, and if they were, im sure PSMonkey would be able to make an awesome game by himself. PSMonkey is a very talented developer, and i wish him the best of luck in the Company he is working in. And I will buy his game.

You guys. Stop spanking the monkey!!

I have never used anything he made or helped with, and as far as I know he never released a final anything, so I would be hard pressed to actually judge his programming skills.

I can say that abusing mod powers, and violating someone's privacy over hurt feelings does make me think a lot less of him though.

If he helps make some game in the future that I end up enjoying I'll probably never even know he had anything to do with it, but just in case. Thanks, I guess.

I'm just curious why the registered users always play the "if you're not registered your comment doesn't count" card.

What does being registered have to do with anything at all?

I'd like someone to explain the actual logic and rationale behind that. Wow, you filled out a form that the unregistered users didn't, man that sure makes you more credible, and superior. (where's the rolling eyes emoticon when you need it?)
