Official ISO loader found in FW 3.50, 3.51

PSP - Image 1More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.

The first explanation that comes to mind regarding the official ISO loader is that Sony is planning to release downloadable PSP titles either through PSN or a similar service geared exclusively for the PSP. The company has already mentioned earlier this year that a download service for the PSP is in the works.

French PSP news site PSP-Generation also notes that Dark AleX and Mathieulh will be patching the np9660.prx file for use in custom firmware 3.51 OE.

Thanks to whoelse for the tip.

wow

they can do 3.51OE already? and this is great news sorry 1st posters.
by Highsight - 2007-07-01 08:33:45
Wow...

Yet ANOTHER stupid move from Sony. They basically just supported piracy against them. WHOOPS. :P
by - 2007-07-01 08:35:37
hm..

i thought they canceled the dl service =\
by - 2007-07-01 08:36:10
.

Is there anyway that we can utilize this file to load ISO's using Lumines? Yes, I know there's a downgrader, but it's good for testing purposes.
by - 2007-07-01 08:37:22
Cool.

That's a pretty sweet thing to add I guess, us guys using 1.5 and custom firmwares have been doing it for awhile now. I'm guessing this will work like the PS1 Emulator though, you're probably going to have to have a special file to play it or some BS. I'm glad I have a CFW, I couldn't imagine not being able to play my backed up games =\ load times on UMD are horrible.
by - 2007-07-01 08:37:46
GREAT NEWS

I guess this means better stability and compatibility when loading them in 3.51 OE.
by - 2007-07-01 08:41:02
yo yo

first post, suck my hairy balls
by - 2007-07-01 08:51:23
hmm

could we exploit this and load lumines iso and downgrade or something cause lumines is gone everywhere
by - 2007-07-01 09:20:12
i see

this will be just like POPS and official EBOOTS. It will only run signed files. This is actually good since sony might release PSP games via PSN now. But since i have OE i do hope its patched too. Maybe now no-umd mode will be perfected.

What will it be? Is it an iso, cso, or dax. I just want to know for future help.
by - 2007-07-01 09:48:00
but wouldnt dark_alex...

crack this new iso loader too? not that i care, just seems obvious of whats gonna happen D:
by - 2007-07-01 09:50:54
re: Highsight

You goddamn moron! Sony finally adds a feature that homebrewers have been saying the PS3 badly needs - extends battery life, increases loading speed yet you try to act like they are fools for adding it. Here's news for you - you are the fool.
by - 2007-07-01 09:51:08
Sony isn't giving up....

They have a purpose for everything, let me tell you that this is a loader for ENCRYPTED games......you can't just load any old ISO on there, I gurantee it. Although they did manage to screw over the Ps1 emulator (but only on OE). So don't expect free games just yet...
by - 2007-07-01 09:56:38
True

You're right. SCE will not allow you to execute unofficially created disk images. They will likely be in a closed-source format, and will definitely be encrypted. Besides, we have an ISO loader already. DaX is patching this probably for the same reason he patched the PSX loader - so we can use the official ones without authorization.
by - 2007-07-01 10:15:09
what is the point

what is the point if there already is a psx loader, it is like a completly useless thing to patch
by - 2007-07-01 10:22:38
sonys way

what sony will do is probably sign the game to your mac address and probably encrypt it through the psp. just a thoery maybe they will alow some sort of homebrew dl service as well but nevermind it is sony
by - 2007-07-01 10:44:50
Are you retarded?

Madgamer, you are retarded.

YOUR RIGHT

i cant fckin wait
by - 2007-07-01 10:46:00
not

not really, the isos will be encrypted like the PS1 games.
by - 2007-07-01 10:48:41
SmartTalk.co.nr

Go me! Another tip by me :) Maybe this is another reason why Sony allowed 333Mhz in 3.50+ too. Because it takes less battery than using a UMD! :) Now if people have to buy a PS3 to download these coz of PSN, then that should increase PS3 sales too! :)
by - 2007-07-01 11:20:45
exactly

sony isnt stupid people...but they arent smart +p
by - 2007-07-01 11:37:39
good idea

well if they included and iso loader then it will probably be included in the new thinner psp so use for umds will be obsolete just an idea. cept you wouldnt be able to use the games you previously bought and have to download them again something sony would do to screw the ppl over
by - 2007-07-01 11:47:19
well...

lol or Dark can just make the homebrew we could make our own and be cheap bastards and it'll be fun
by - 2007-07-01 11:56:57
The dowload service was

supposed to be out in may but got delayed there is in artical about it at gamespot somewhere.
by - 2007-07-01 12:06:58
well

If you have UMD games already, then you probably already have a PSP anyway. Though yeah, if you bought a thin version and it had no UMD player, then you couldnt. Maybe they should make a UMD add-on for a non-UMD thin PSP.
by - 2007-07-01 12:28:35
3.51 Downgrader

Any news of a 3.51 downgrader yet?

by - 2007-07-01 12:43:56
slim PSP with UMD

...or the slim PSP could come with some sort of plugin UMD reader which could either play the UMD directly or rip it to an encrypted file on your Memory Stick. Then the PSP could remain slimmer and still have UMD compatibility.
by - 2007-07-01 12:55:47
Re: Dan--FIRST THINGS FIRST

Dan asked "could we exploit this and load lumines iso and downgrade or something cause lumines is gone everywhere?" It sounds like you want a UMD-less way of using the Lumines exploit. If that's the case, the answer is no. You'll need Lumines to downgrade first, and then you can install 3.51OE. It doesn't work the other way around.
by - 2007-07-01 13:08:03
wow.

you are aware it takes a good deal of time for a downgrader to come out, right? a 3.50 downgrader was released - and you updated? 3.51 was released, when, just yesterday? and you're already out of luck until prolly at least a few months time - finding a proper exploit is difficult at best.
by - 2007-07-01 13:18:48
does this mean

does this mean 3.50 users can use isos without having to activate the system
by El Xando - 2007-07-01 13:30:57
If ISOs will have special encryption when downloaded from Sony...

Couldn't we just inject it into our ISOs and play them?
by - 2007-07-01 13:37:56

I STICK THIS IN YOUR ANOOS
by - 2007-07-01 14:06:18
Lol

Is anyone still at 3.03 OE-C? I sure am, still staying that way, hopefully Dax will overcome this obsticle, i doubt it thou since it was never done on the other OEs. Still, anyone at 3.03 OE-c?
by - 2007-07-01 14:09:46
Oh wait.

So if some on can crack this, we can run .iso files on official 3.50/3.51 firmwares? o_o
by - 2007-07-01 14:10:29
Re: BigGunZ

Um, not bloody likely, seeing how you could just *rent a game and keep it*.
by - 2007-07-01 14:12:32
zetsurin

Truthfully you have no idea what an iso loader is. The psx loader is an iso loader but the iso's they use are encrypted and its a custom file format. This would be the same and this would allow people to buy games off the PSN store and upload to their memsticks. The games will probably only register to one PSP and other psp's trying to access the same file on the same memstick would probably be denied.
by - 2007-07-01 14:21:00
yah

Im still at 3.03 OE-C. its much easier to use and install things like custom xmbs, im pretty sure alot of people are still at 303OEC. but what I dont get is this update. why would sony do this? dont they know that iso loading on psps mainly deals with playing copied games?? this would seem like a bad idea, unless they were planning to put some kind of security check on the iso's like with the ps1 emlator.

think about this....

has anyone cracked the ps1 loader/games to play ps1 games on official 3.+ firmware? nope. it's probably some signed encrpytion thing similar to what normally prevents you from running homebrew on official firmware (without exploits)
by - 2007-07-01 15:45:26

NO

by - 2007-07-01 16:50:03
fsad

Eventually there will be a way for everyone to run the official downloaded ISOs on multiple psp's just like the PS1 games. Maybe they'd be better off just doing what they do with demos and having them as signed homebrew.

by - 2007-07-01 19:10:28
ahahahahahahah

geeez man no official games have been release how should we know, ALSO you known .cso and .dax are not official files LMAO. CSO is made for Custom Firmware and DAX is another compression method by the L0rD, Dark-Alex
by - 2007-07-01 20:41:32
d

Yep, and then in 5.61 OE you can play any ones you want :D
by - 2007-07-01 20:44:49
b

Sony should make i so you can play and rip any iso from a umd. They should just make it so you have to put in he umd of the game you want to play but it will load from the mem stick. That would be a sweet feature. and they could make it so you could copy __% of the game to the memory sick for faster loading.
by - 2007-07-01 20:49:03
:)

then get OE you can rip umds to isos with psp filer
by - 2007-07-01 21:04:38
hmm..

you know that could be a cool thing, but i would ask dark alex to not unlock it, i dont want people pirating easier. I do want it to be avialable by sony. you may think it would be cool but to me it just doesnt seem right to unlock to the public. I understand that the PS1 emulator should be unlocked because its an old system with no new content being released on it, but if you unlock somehtign that allows anyone to play any new game without buying it... well you see where that COULD be really bad for the industry right?
by - 2007-07-01 21:07:50
b...

see now that is a great idea! that way you still have to own the game but you get the benifit by loading it form the card! wish that would happen...
by - 2007-07-01 21:08:05
just my opinoin

wow, thats an awesome find. better than any of the other hidden prx files. hopefully sony will release this store. i'd be happy to buy titles from them if they were good.

by - 2007-07-01 21:49:37
My 2 cent...

I think this is Sony's way of attempting to go head to head with CFW users. They'll probably begin to incorporate CFW features to their official FW releases. It makes sense, Imagine having the feature of CFW (ISO loader, executing un-signed codes/homebrews, 333mhz, etc..) on an official Sony FW. What would you need to run CFW for if that's the case? The only thing I can imagine is the custom XMB themes. I don't think Sony FW would EVER support access on Flash (1 + 2) files. But then again, a year ago, I would've never though Sony would ever release an ISO loader. But it's here now... If not, Sony would probably re-write their FW to support customization (XMB, gameboots, etc...) via the memstick or even the flash itself. I think this isn't a mistake from Sony that everybody is claiming it to be. It's probably an attempt to better their services and features which also in the same time have an official FW that could stand a chance with CFW. If my theories are even close to the truth, then this has got to be the beginning of Sony MOST EFFECTIVE/REALISTIC approach towards CFW users. Perhaps Sony PSP Project leaders had FINALLY realize that ISO loaders and un-signed codes are here to stay for good. Why compete with it if that's what's the public/users REALLY wants. So they might as well accept their losses and cooperate this feature and who knows probably ditch it/enhance it later on when no other devs could be bothered cause Sony just adapts on CFW's main feature. (As any major industries does once they have complete control of the situation) Because right now, I think CFW Scene is MUCH larger and BETTER than what Sony had EVER release(d). Why else would Sony release an ISO loader module? Would the head CEO's and board leaders even approve something like this if they don't have something BIG in mind? As yourself this. If you get the same (and legal) features that CFW benifits from future official Sony official FW's. Wouldn't you just do the right thing and support the company's FW releases instead that brought the idea/unit in to the real world in the first place? Think about it...
by - 2007-07-01 22:16:05
jixxer

it really doesn't make a difference. It's already extremely easy to pirate PSP games. Usually a matter of downloading a CSO off a torrent site and putting it in a special folder on the memory stick.

The iso loader is for encrypted isos with a particular encryption different for each psp, the problem now is that it loads isos in the format of EBOOT.PBP and since we still have no of such eboots he is trying to figure out what should this eboot be like in order to get a valid iso loader for custom firmwares with a perfect 100% working NO UMD

PSP's Future

I think this is the way to go for sony, with downloadable ISOs. When I think of GPS software and maps in UMD, it doesn't make much sense, but in iso, it opens up a complete new world for the psp. Another example is a voip software, I down't see this comming out in a UMD. Voip software gets updated prety often. It's another type of application that makes sense comming out in an iso format. What do you think? Do you think the ISO stuff will be only for games?

theorie

what is the big reason for all actions of a company? money where can you download ps1 games to your psp (official) ? psp-store the market for downloadable games is rising, not just psp games, I mean all games, so the next possible step is to offer doenloadable psp games, i dont know how they want to make it save but... of all the homebrewers out theire... theire are still enough people out theire that will be paying for that games..

Come on man, how can this increse the sales of the ps3. Like anyone is gonna buy a ps3 so they can play games on their frekin psp. Sony is just bloody money hungry.
by RizXp - 2007-07-03 00:43:14
Smart Idea by Sony

In my opinion this is a smart idea by Sony, to buy and download games off their download site, as it may save their bussiness because they may introduce something similar to a CD-Key in thier games to prevent piracy or just add more security to thier ISO's to prevent piracy as well.
by - 2007-07-03 00:46:21
Wait a second

If it has a ISO loader, won't you just be able to download games and play them then? Did sony just make a mistake or am i just confused?
