mathieulh: That exploit wasn't yours to release, Freeplay!

Looks like not all is well in the kingdom of PSP homebrew. And it involves no less than two of the loudest voices currently in the scene: mathieulh and Freeplay.

Over at our forums, mathieulh calls out Freeplay for supposedly leaking the Mercury exploit, when the code of said exploit wasn't his to begin with. According to mathieulh, Freeplay has been warned not to release it, but that he went on head and did just that anyway. In doing so, he has therefore abused Fanjita's given trust, who originally gave Freeplay the access to his svn server.

The leaked exploit being referred to here would be the Mercury exploit released by FreePlay just yesterday. Oh how fast sweet things go sour.

Here, let me quote mathieulh on the matter:

Freeplay has been warned not to leak the Mercury exploit because the code simply isn't his, he abused fanjita's trust when fanjita gave freeplay an access to his svn server and freeplay tried every possible url variations until he found something. That something was the prometheus svn which had various exploits including the mercury one, all coded and ready for use. Basically Freeplay stole the exploit...

As a proof that I am not lying to you, or making this up, I will be now providing along this post the original mercury exploit and sources as they were in the original svn (after removing .svn folders for obvious reasons). Trust me, it saddens me to have to resort in doing so, unfortunately I do have no choice considering Freeplay leaked the game exploit to begin with...

I really think the PSP DEVs need to grow up. If they don't want to make CFW that lets ISOs run then go find something else to do as thats what the people want.

If you have all these exploits and don't release them then why find them in the first place?

If you have all these extra stuff, homebrew, CFW, exploits, hacks, HENs, etc and it you don't intend on releasing it then STFU as we don't care what you have. Either release it or why even bothering making it in the first place?

A video of anything that will never be released is in the same class as a fake video. We don't care for it at all.

If Math wants to have a ***** about FP releasing the exploit that was patched then fine, its useless now anyway even without FP releasing it as they patched it in OFW620 anyway so Math is really having a ***** for no real reason.

So, FP released a exploit that doesn't work anymore... Boo friggin hoo...

Either release it or STFU.

I've said this many times and I will keep saying it. If you don't want to release it then why are you bothering wasting your time doing it in the first place?

For the people that have heard what I was doing here is an update. I quit. I have stopped doing what I was working on as I wasn't going to release it so why should I even bother continue with it? I live up to what I say. I wont release it so I wont bother working in it anymore.

are you blind? FreePlay released it and Sony found out so they patched it with 6.20, If FP didn't released it yet Math and his team could of put it further so Sony wouldn't patch it. If Math doesn't want to release it then its his choice.

No, are you dense?

Firmware 6.20 came first before the actual release. It already patched the exploit. For PSPGo users (all OFW, natch), updating Firmware is mandatory if they wish to actually get games, unlike the case with older PSPs. So there would really be no way for other PSPGo users to get the game anyways, but those who already had the game (and had 6.10 or lower) could still use the exploit (which never led anywhere anyways).

The issue here is not so much that Sony reacts to Freeplay's leak by patching stuff, but that Freeplay apparently betrayed the trust of Fanjita by ever releasing it after he said he wouldn't.

You know back to the roots. I remember the times when PSp hackig was a fun thing to do. Where everybody helped each other, but now it's just a scene of a**holes, whiners, attention Wh*rs and kids who think they're cool.

Dark_AleX is also gone, for which I not even mad, he has a private life, and the scene has become ungrateful anyway.

I'm somehow glad that't I'm no active member anymore. My PSP-1000 broke 4 months ago, And I'm not planning a get a new one. No good games coming, PSP scene is screwed, why buy a PSP at the moment?

I enjoy my 3.90 cfw on my psp phat and i appreciate the work the original hacker put into it. As for the hacking of the Go... go out and buy the pxp 2000 from china grabber , it'll be cheaper and it'll do most of what home brew does anyway.

If it wasn't your exploit, you still had NO RIGHT to release it, and because you did, Sony now has the files, and any modifications to the exploit by the psp hackers, sony can quickly figure it out and just patch it again and again. For now, this exploit is dead. The PSP Go CFW only hope is for a secret project unannounced, or if Team Typhoon shares theirs.

He still had no right to leak( give the link to the public world) it. Maybe Fanjita or Math had their own eloader, and they were going to release it themselves, so it would actually hack the PSP Go, not just show some silly words and pretty pictures. And besides, even if they didn't have an eloader, but still knew how to make it hack a psp, the exploit itself got patched, but not the actual game. So they could of made a new exploit for the game for 6.20- users, but now you need 6.20+ on official firmware

Problem is you do need much more than half a brain to work seriously on hacking Psp, it's easy to read all the guides on hacking and copy other work but understanding and modifying the code is something very different, people who just go around saying make your own cfw if you don't like it just don't have the sense to understand that.

Freeplay is not saying he found it at all. He got it from math. The issue in question is freeplay releasing code that was not his after being told not to release it. It doent matter if it was patched, math feels he had no right to put something in the open that he did not create. The release itself has no effect on the HB community. I don't think anyone "snitched". Sony must've accessed the PSN logs with the MAC address from the video and get a list of everything downloaded to that PSP Go. Then it was easy to scan the (very few I'm guessing) downloaded games and determine which one was explotable.

1. There is, in fact, copyright on homebrew. Whoever wrote it, owns it, no arguments. The average homebrew author can't afford to sue over it, but were you ever to, say, release a mod of an GPL'd PSP homebrew app w/o providing the source and the author took it upon himself to sue you, he'd win. Just because you don't have signed code doesn't mean you don't have copyright to something you wrote. That's kind of how copyright law WORKS.

2. You have a *****ing funny idea as to what constitutes "Making Available". If someone invites you to their home, you don't have the legal right to their *****ing silverware because they "made it available" by letting you in.

I don't really care to read into this story, but someone was given a smidgen of trust and they apparently abused the living ***** out of it.

Thats kinda the main reason why Sony is trying to stop our advances on the CFW side dumbass. Letting people ISO load without trying to slow them down kinda hurts their game developer pitches.

The only reason it got patched was that a group of Japanese fellows at Sony sat behind a computer and analyzed the vid FreePlay released and discovered that a game called Mercury has a similar menu or they just check FP's PSN account and checked what he bought recently. Not very hard if your running the company that people are trying to undermine using your own stuff. Just follow the paper trail.

True as that may be, mat's complaint has not much to do with the vid, but with the fact that FP *released* code that wasn't his. Sony's game patching is not directly related to FP's release of the exploit.

He's been around here for awhile commenting on everything trying to get his cred up, then he takes an existing exploit and with his mediocre coding makes it into a hello world and I think when qj actually devoted their first actual article about him it all went to his head and was acting like he was 'above' any normal user and was bragging and dangling his *****ty unusable hello world to everyone and saying how it was his and he was never gonna share it like a 5 year old with their barbie doll. Then this fawker with no morals steals someone elses code and posts it for everyone to see (including sony) to get more cred (just by posting, he didnt take credit but was still in the wrong) and now theres another exploit dead to us because of his actions. He's also betrayed the trust of very respected devs in the scene and I bet it will be a long time until they trust another up and coming dev (which freeplay wasnt, he wasnt helping the community only himself), which is truly sad but can you blame them. I just hope math and others can look past this as the guy is clearly a douche and they should have already been weary of him from the get go. I for instance would have never let that douche access to my unreleased and private work. He got what he deserved and has been denounced from the scene and is now acting out dismantling his youtube channel, deleting all subs, friends, videos, ect. Hope everyone is enjoying watching him getting what he deserves and trust me we are not losing anything from the scene on his end because hes contributed very little and doubt he would have in the future besides put vids up of exploits hes stolen and made hello worlds just to gloat and dangle in front of your faces. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out, your 15 minutes are up kid.

So it was stolen and released. Like this hasn't happened before. I expect (and feel it is necessary) that drama will ensue. That ***** isn't cool.

On the other hand. The PSP scene will actually advance now. For that I am happy. Sure it will be a VERY drama filled progression, but at least people can have something to build on now.

Hate to say it but it serves him right for bragging his ass off. It's called karma folks.

Yes he had the right to not release it (and it being leaked is *****ty) but the moment he started showing off and saying nya nya nya look what I have that you don't have, we could have all seen this coming.

Rule of thumb: if you're gonna be a d1ck, cover your @ss. Or someone may be giving you THEIR d1ck right up YOUR @ss. Now next time either don't be a ***** and instead just say NOTHING when you have something that could help others that you want for yourself, or just f*cking release it.

That's all I got. Hope the drama subsides and we can use this exploit the way it should have been used when he first created it. Which is for the better of the WHOLE scene.

oh, and btw. releasing this to sony? doesn't matter. it's wither you pause the game of cat an mouse, or you let it continue. It can't be won until the PSP is discontinued. But at least we're back in the loop again now. I think we can all agree that that is at least a lot more entertaining than sitting on an old firmware waiting for games to work. Better? who knows. But definitely entertaining,
