Lighten up: Fanjita talks of screen brightness issues

Lighten up! - Image 1Fanjita of the Noobz team has responded to certain issues about the screen brightness after using the downgrader. He's posted an article on their team's blog that explains why this happens and what you can possibly do about it.

They've discovered that this issue seems to be isolated among the more recent PSP versions of the TA-082/A-086 batch - those that come with FW 2.71 or later. To explain further, here's a direct quote from homebrew hero Fanjita:

This means that if you run a lower firmware than v2.71, then the display isn't given the right brightness signals. Where normally you would see a bright screen, and it would go dark after a while of not pressing any keys, now it is normally dark, and goes bright if you don't press anything for a couple of minutes.

The best fix is obviously to install a firmware that can control the display correctly. Fortunately the OE firmwares, e.g. 3.10 OE, will do this. The only drawback is that, when running homebrew in the 1.5 kernel mode, you will get the old screen behaviour. But you should be able to work around this by pressing the 'screen' button a few times.

While that in itself can be a bit technically highfalutin for some of the newbies, Fanjita actually gives a suggestion for the more advanced users. You can actually create some hybrid firmware "that will use the later screenhandling code in the 1.50 kernel mode of OE."

Sorry if all the jargon might be a bit too much, and that's why we had to post some direct quotes so as not to leave room for error during lost-in-translation moments.

I love the OE firmwares they are the best attempt at making the PSP what it should be... Damn Sony! I like devhook too but not the fact that i have to switch between firmwares everytime i turn on my PSP...

What would we do if we did not have Dark Alex and Fanjita's crew?!?!?!?

# brightness issues with homebrew on custom firmwaresGuest 2007-02-26 19:32
I noticed that, while the 4 levels of brightness works perfectly on psp and psx games, there are only 3 brightness levels for homebrews and the brightness levels change the opposite way.

I also happen to have the TA-82 mobo and my friend has the same issue.

The annoying thing is that if I have my PSP plugged into the power outlet, the PSP counts "screen off" as one of the brightness settings.

I really hope that there'll be fix for this someday.

# Same issuesGuest 2007-02-27 15:22
I have the same issues with a new PSP I just bought when the downgrader was released. I press screen brightness and it will not goto 4th brightness in homebrew. It counts the screen off on 4th setting. I have faith in these guys, and I have read around on some other forums, it's being worked on dilligently. i predict a fix/workaround in less than 2 weeks....
