Sun Java

Update: In our hurry, we forgot to give out the link to Sun's developer site. It is now included in the article. Our apologies for the mistake.

The latest entry in our PiMP man's blog reads "Introducing PeeJay!" We knew that our friend was working on something, but he kept us all in the dark. Well, the cat is out of the bag today. The PiMP man just emailed us a few hours ago to unveil this project which he he had been working on for the last few weeks.

Since DickyDick personally mailed us to let us in on this piece of news; and now, we'll be unveiling DickyDick's latest creation: Java on the PSP!

The developer was very enthusiastic about this.

"PeeJay? Yeah PeeJay..! Or call it Psp Java, PimpJava Â… Java for ur psp! Yep, I made a small port of the j2me (K)VM, making my PSP capable of running JAVA programs.. It was a very easy portÂ…. as the Sun KVM is easy to port. It was done in a jiffy."

The PiMP man was also kind enough to show us a video of his port in action. You can download it below. Unfortunately, that's the only available download here. Where's the application? Well, DickyDick1969 has been unable to release this since he did not get permission from Sun, the creators of Java. Here's what he had to say:

"So why not sharing the stuff ?? (giving you a download link for exampleÂ…) ItÂ’s sadÂ… :-( :-(

I asked SUN for permission for distributing my port and they said I could not (yet) distribute it for some (not to mention here) reasons. At least not now.."

What he also said is that all of you can persuade Sun Microsystems to allow this to be released. So you might want to visit Sun's developer site to give them your feedback about allowing the release of PimpJava. You'll never know - they might just hear you.

hmm,

might be fun to play some cell-phones games on the PSP that would normally give you an error on your phone due to a small heap stack. hope it gets permission to be released!

by - 2006-09-26 22:19:02

See what happens when you play fair? Should have just released it without saying anything, that would be something I would have some fun with.
by - 2006-09-26 22:19:36

What kind of homebrew developper/Hacker would ask for permission ? If booster asked for permission...There would be no devhook today as well as no downgrader ect....I think this guy needs to go pimp something else !
by - 2006-09-26 22:24:12
License

You guys need to read up licensing. The source for JAVA is open but if you want to use it you must follow their license.
by - 2006-09-26 22:24:52
ooo

***** tease, now i got blue balls... if they dont let him release this, then he wasted alot of time. sorry man
by - 2006-09-26 22:25:48
dude, release on torrents

then i will pass it along for ya.
by - 2006-09-26 22:31:35
???

since when is kock a bad word? the guy who released this is "pimp" he slaps hoes !!! and im sure sun would figure out it was him if it got leaked to torrents, then there would be fewer updates also.. on his website he said he may port vm next.
by toxic-snipe - 2006-09-26 22:34:47
YES!

Now we might be able to play runescape on the psp!
by - 2006-09-26 22:39:44
Runescape!

Yeah man!

Sony

I bet it's because Sun wouldn't want to piss off Sony or something stupid like that.
by soopergooman - 2006-09-26 22:48:14
my email

This is what I sent to their feedback email address: Can you nice people at Sun Java let us SONY PSP users around the world have the release of PimpJava? I think a nice homebrew version on my psp would be nice. Please let the Developer over at www.Pimpware.org release his port. The PSP is a very nice peice of technology that is able to run many different types of programs. I'm sure SONY would be very interested in this as well. Maybe they would ask you guys to make Java apps for them also. Please do this for us. I am 34 and Love my PSP, please help me Love it more.
by - 2006-09-26 22:48:38
Give us a Torrent link please!

Just share it through Bit Torrent!
by - 2006-09-26 22:53:31
#6

To #6 we don't need to read up on anything. We didn't say anything about doing it legally. The point is that there are probably way too many legal issues for Sun to worry about, to ever be able to actually endorse this in any way, so he should have just released it without saying anything, and the worst that happens is they ask him to stop, but at least by that point we all have it. :P
by - 2006-09-26 23:32:07
yay!

as a person learning java im happy to hear this :).
by - 2006-09-27 00:02:12

if Sun never ever permit the port, that means we will never ever get this nice homebrew?
by - 2006-09-27 00:20:18
yes!

This is great news! I hope Sun will give us a permission to use it soon. I'm a Java developer and it would be nice to write some Java homebrews for PSP.
by - 2006-09-27 00:23:33

he should just released that into the wild instead of asking people about it specially SUN. Emulators developers don't ask people like Nintendo if they can release their emulators
by - 2006-09-27 00:45:07
COME ON

Read between the lines people, he never intended to release this, but he did say what he used for the port and how easy it was... All he ment to say that its doable and someone with bigger balls should port it and release it to BT.
by - 2006-09-27 00:48:49
Thats exactly it.

i was going to say that. he told everyone how easy it wass becuase he knew it prob wont get accepted. its obv. read between the lines. its right there in front of you :P
by - 2006-09-27 00:49:27
re

"What kind of homebrew developper/Hacker would ask for permission ? If booster asked for permission...There would be no devhook today as well as no downgrader ect....I think this guy needs to go pimp something else !" the guy who is making the ff6 in 3d port for one.
by - 2006-09-27 00:59:00

"You guys need to read up licensing. The source for JAVA is open but if you want to use it you must follow their license." than explain why that guy who made the recent ps1 emu still hasnt released source and nothing has nor will probably happen to him, its not like theyre gonna get their lawyers and sue or nothing.
by insa8ne2k4 - 2006-09-27 01:03:52
yumm!

excellent port. i thinks we will have lots and lots of fun with this one. PiMP you r excellent. i cant wait to get my hands on the first release.
by - 2006-09-27 02:34:42
Just search on bittorrent

LOL .... ***** you, Sun.
by - 2006-09-27 02:56:22
Moo

If anything, it would be both a Sun and Sony agreement to let this go out to the public no? I mean, if Sun agrees but Sony doesn't like it, then what happens to Sun for letting this get released? I doubt it can happen, and I doubt they will let it get released without getting the proper legalities dealt with. Which could possibly never happen if Sony doesn't want it too. That won't stop it from ever being released illegally though >_>
by - 2006-09-27 03:02:31
pspcoder

He has ported the CSBV and CBMC classes. Those classes are necessary for a java program to run. Those classes are duplicated with C thus converting J2ME to C and the header will be with C. Then he has converted the C native funcs to PSP native funcs . Lets say "printf() to pspDebugScreenPrintf". I will try to work on it. If possible , I may open source the codes and some guy may release it with the package. :)
by - 2006-09-27 03:34:44
?

why dont you just release the source and teach us how to compile it or give us a tut on how to make one for ourselves? they cant do nething about that can they? btw i sent my proposal in :)
by - 2006-09-27 03:37:04
omg

nice work. upload it to torrents or something
by anonymous stranger - 2006-09-27 03:47:02
yo

nice! but some of you wanted to play runescape... is WAYYYY too big, plus this app mite not have like a wifi connection or something, but is certainly a hope if someone can use his sourse code(when he release it) to make a runescape client port or something to enable us to play it like on interenet explorer(firefox lags)
by Laxgoalee22333 - 2006-09-27 04:11:48

Runescape

I would love the use Runescape on my PSP but there is a problem with available RAM (because Sony is stupid) there will also be problems with controls won't there? Anyways wonder what Sony will do about this?
by - 2006-09-27 09:45:17

Well java stuff again :-/ I'd prefered contributions to PSPython python rules
by - 2006-09-27 10:34:43

by Bad Intentions - 2006-09-27 14:00:57
Video..

I don't get it. The video is just running some processes. No actual Java apps running.
by - 2006-09-27 14:37:22

i h8 runescape, used to play it, got bored of just clickingbuttons 4 crap animations, i play turf battles, a proper 3d mmorpg plus u couldtn play a game that big on your psp.
by - 2006-09-27 16:05:49
runescape!!!!!!!!

that would be sweet, scamming on the go lol
by - 2006-09-27 16:11:30
video

The video DOES indeed show a java app running. It's just doesn't use any AWT/SWING (GUI) classes.
by - 2006-09-27 16:52:04
runscape > all other mmo's

turf battles are lame and you are a loser and i would like you to die if you wouldnt mind k thx. do not compaire the maginificent nature of the simplicity that is runescape to your out and out garbage "tries to be good but fails magnificently" game.
by - 2006-09-27 17:27:54

Runescape is pretty gay but I guess for the psp it would be cool.
by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2006-09-27 18:05:13
Pssss, Hey Pssss. Hey *****y*****1969...

pass the app over here. I won't say a word. ;D
by - 2006-09-27 18:33:21

Runescape, I for one don't like it, but some people do. So leave it at that. I dont really undertand why we can't just do this.
by - 2006-09-27 18:59:25

dumbasses its J2ME as in java for cellphones... so all those awesome cellphone games can be played on psp
by - 2006-09-27 19:10:30

^^Runescape

You could play runescape on the psp. If your a member you could easily play runescape classic, but if your F2P, Then the minimum runescape thing (the one u click on that has less graphics and music and stuff) runs at exactly 333mhz which is exactly what the processor on the psp can handle (bairly) so with a good wifi hotspot it should be VERY possible to port runescape classic or the lower version of runescape!

28. » "why dont you just release the source and teach us how to compile it or give us a tut on how to make one for ourselves? they cant do nething about that can they? btw i sent my proposal in :) " Yeah, WHY don't don't teach us, how to DO that since you said it's an EASY port.... So it wouldn't be that hard...
by - 2006-09-27 22:21:26
pspcoder

If you wanna play those CellPhone games ..... ( those small jar and jad i used to download from wapsites when i was small) , then u'd better port SYMBAIN classes and JAR-JAD extractor. Then define a class containing mobile keys to psp keys. Its not a "run n play" easy thing. It might take days to port JAR-JAD extractors and symbain classes. More hard then GBA emu. This port runs j2me classes/.java and not jar/jad. I dont even know wheather it runs J2ME APPLETS. So if he open sources it , I may create a jar/jad extractor and may port SYMBAIN classes. Am working on this IDEA. Still no good execution.
by - 2006-09-27 22:50:38

My comment has been logged in the Sun feedback section. Now its ur turn people.
by - 2006-09-28 05:40:26
I dont see anything

I only see some text on the psp and then a pink background but i dont see any java thing that is working.
by - 2006-09-28 06:38:53

aaaarg. why cant he just release it??? well, i actually do know why he cant...but.
by - 2006-09-28 13:38:04
I know why

Just 12 days ago I got information ( can't tell from where ) that a future psp firmware ( before 3.15 , the ps1 emulator firmware ) will contain the ability to run up to java 7 on your psp. Information specifies it's 3.01 but it's only around 40% sure only , could be a bit before or after 3.01.
by - 2006-09-28 16:41:24
Java 7?

When you consider that the current version of Java is 5, you'd have to call that information bull *****.
by - 2006-09-28 17:45:37

if your going to try and get them to release it. I suggest changing the name from pimpjava, otherwise i highly dought it will ever be released
by - 2006-09-28 20:49:30

Not sure why you'd ask for permission. Its not like he had the source to the VM, he obviously had to do it without any of that information. Although, I know that in the past Sun sued Microsoft over their version of the VM, and they even had an agreement with each other. I guess its better to play it safe. Hopefully Java will come to the PSP in some form.
by - 2006-10-02 07:08:31
to *65

*65 if you want to extract *.jar (not sure *.jad), just do it with winrar! correct me if im wrong, but i did it!
