Remember that Triple Triad PSP homebrew from almost a year ago? Yeah, the game based on the Final Fantasy VIII card game was quite a smash hit back then and right now, development for the game has taken it to a whole new direction: MMO Infrastructure. Huwhat?! Did we just hear that right? If No Gravity was pushing the graphics-side envelope of homebrew development, Triple Triad PSP is definitely pushing its online aspect.

Part of the Triple Triad Team is Zero-One, who tipped us off, saying that they're finally ready to dish out some info about the whole hush-hush dev project they've been doing for about a year now. alexmae from our forums was kind enough to post a translation of the changelog (which is in Italian) for Triple Triad PSP Online:
  • Complete graphic Restyle; Optimized code, 60 fps
  • 3 decks besides the classic (FFVIII) , over 330 cards + bonus
  • For the first time MMO Infrastructure; Massive Multiplayer Online
  • A virtual world based on FFVIII world; Shop, buy and sell cards
  • Private messages; Live chat during the game; Friends list, black list
  • Possibility to view users' status, track their movements
  • New FFVII and FFX decks (coming soon FFIX deck)
  • Added help during online game and rules info
Zero-One has announced that they plan to roll out Triple Triad PSP next Monday, so you better be sure to keep your eyes peeled. Upon its release, we hope to get more info of how the whole online aspect works... This whole project is posing a very interesting revolution for the homebrew community. What say we release the source code for this game, 'ey, TT Team?

» Cool...

Yeah this is cool and all, don't get me wrong i like MMOs but i'm not a big fan of card based games... How about you do something nice with this code? oh say i don't know...maybe give it to the team working on the CounterStrike mod? so we could all enjoy some CounterStrike2d look alike on our psps...that'd be ownage.

Other than that, when this comes out i'll prob give it a run. Seems like an ok game.

i dont play any rpg, mmo or strategy.....but i dont believe a word about no one playin this online...

people who play thi stypea game dont play for the weapons, cars or for the graphics....its a card game, which a psp's AI will get a bit monotonous after a few beatins...

online play means real opponents, which is what ppl want...

nice game, source release sounds cool too

I tried the Tetramaster game that's like TT for FFXI:Online but it wasn't very popular...

However, since this is on a PSP, it but be more successful than Squeenix's version. XD

The trailer is from summer 2006 , since we started in may 2006,we wrote" the first mmo",but actually is not.thats true.we'll try to improve our ideas.

Actual game have accomplished ALL features listed, and more are not listed (for example real time traslation between users,or chat during trade,or even statistics or lobby shout).

this week gives time for us to translate manual into english + clear the server from old test records ;)

Does this run on 3.XX kernel of OE (instead of 1.50 kernel) so we can use WPA encryptions?

» hey

Now that I heard this about this MMO homebrew I wanna say that once saw on a trailer an MMORPG called ultima online or something like that that was in 2d graphics but looked like a very expansive world with characters on cities and forests and levels and stuff and I think making a 2D MMORPG shpuldn't take much memory or loading off a psp.

by BoWseR - 2007-03-27 08:38
» Just....wow

Holy crap, this sorta thing warms my heart. Someone whos put so much effort into a homebrew game that just slaps everything else in the face. I applaud you.

If these guys were to share the workings behind their MMO structure with other homebrew developers, the homebrew game scene would explode overnight.

Even if you dont decide to share it, thats still one HELL of an achievement.

Well done

by Ryalla - 2007-03-27 09:39
» Source Code?

They should not release the entire source code. Depending on how the game is handled, releasing it would only increase the amount of those who will cheat by modifying it, not even mentioning those who will use CWCheat + Cheatmaster with it. I say they release only those parts of it the game depends on for the MMO aspects, not those with the actual game. Add that with the server side communication code and that's all you need for this functionality to be added in "a lot games".

by Ryalla - 2007-03-27 09:41
» Nope.

No, they were online games. Not Massively Multiplayer Online games.

by Ryalla - 2007-03-27 09:43
» GPL..

GPL doesn't require you, persay, to release the source code. It doesn't even require you to follow it.

by Jack Meehoff - 2007-03-27 09:43
» Where are the big name game companies?

Why wouldn't a big name game publisher make a mmo game for psp? They would make a killing.

Clint Mansell composed it, but the song is performed by the Kronos Quartet and it's called Lux Aeterna. There's four or five different versions as it's been on a number of different soundtracks. They seem to have butchered it rather terribly on this video, however.

And how tough is it to give musicians credit at the end of a video?

by same - 2007-03-27 13:32
» meh

yea i thought this was goin to be some kind of action game. I might try this when it comes out. good work anyways i guess. I hope homebrew one day will come to a level in which people will make 3d shooting and action games.

I agree with Ryalla.

by ZeppyDigitalDesigns - 2007-03-27 15:51
» Looks Impressive

Well it looks like it may be very fun but theres one huge thing about mmo's , this needs to be 100% unhackable, no cheating, as much as people will want cheats and codes to make a mmo worth playing you need to know that your accomplishing something that takes more then a cheat code or a hack. So please please please make sure you do this and keep coming with expansions and new cards and this could be one of the biggest hits for the psp.

That keyboard suxs and the worst part is it is used on majority of homebrew... I know a better keyboard than that... I hope they will do something about it

by CRW - 2007-03-28 05:53

I don't like card games, but maybe this will inspire more homebrew MMOs.

I think they should release all the source code. Security through obscurity is pretty lame security.

by Word - 2007-04-04 03:07
» Online TT

Well, there's already Online Triple Triad for anyone questioning if people would spend their time playing Triple Triad and one site off the top of my head, TTadvance, has a huge community. So yeah, people will play this. =p

Oh and one thing about some of the cards I saw in the ideo, the numbering is off. Might want to fix those before you give the final release. (By "off" I mean poorly spaced. SOme are too far away.
