I think that Sony either made a deal that if he resigned that they wouldn't sue him for something, or that Sony paid DAX off. I don't think that DAX would accept the payoff given his amount of time invested in the PSP but I don't know some people will budge for the right price. I bet that he is still going to make homebrew just under a different name or privately.

Ever since I got my psp I was running regular firmware until the 3.03 downgrader came out. I downloaded and installed 3.10 OE-A and it was the best firmware ever. It has been a long way sine then, and I have realized that most people using homebrew wouldn't have even looked into it if it wasn't for dark alex's accomplishments. Well,..... best of luck to you man.

We still need a 3.50/3.51 OE firmware at some point though, since some future PSP titles NEED it to run (i.e. God of War, etc). I really hope he's given someone else he knows the tools and know-how to keep it going.

ISO's, CSO's. even the odd DAX file here and there! i really cant believe this, goodbye Dark_Alex :-(

SOny probably has a hard time trying to stay 1 step ahead of DAX. They must be getting irritated having to update the FW continually whenever a new OE comes out. With the father of PS removed from Sony top mgmt, the new boss prob think that he can do better to wipe out the OE scene. To stop OE, he goes to the source. i.e. stop DA and people will buy PSP games. Esp when people are dying to play fantastic games that are lined up e.g. GOW, Monster Hunter 2. Without updated OE, even if more exploit were to come out to downgrade to FW1.5, there is a limit on what one can do with it. Smart strategic move Sony. Better off buying DS Lite. DQ9.

But what sucks even more is that I been waiting on Crisis Core for like 3 years and am probably the games biggest fanboy and now if someone doesn't make a cracked FW for it, then I'm gonna be screwed playing it coz: 1: I don't want to go back to official 2: and if I do, there's a big chance of brickage. PS. dump tools + instructions on OE creation to reliable people, or to the public online, let the freedom of information select the next CFW developer (the next Sony target.. unfortunately) Bottom line is, with DAX gone, PSP + UMD sales are going to suffer greatly. ***** the corporate world.

I remember buying my PSP the first day it came out in the US(still have it, still in near perfect condition), I was exciting. A portable playstation.....but as the months went by and the PSP lack blockbuster games I lost interest in the unit. I really forgot about it and look at other systems (Nintendo DS). But then I read about Dark Alex and I was EXCITED on how someone can create something out of nothing. To create custom firmwares BASED on Sony's firmware. To listen to his peers and gives us what we were looking for. To see Sony try to overcome with another firmware to "Increase Security" in the PSP......What I'm trying to say is that Dark Alex brought new life into a dying PSP and you will be missed and honor as one of the GREATEST. But as one life ends another will be born. Someone will step up and carry-on the legacy.

i got a psp abt a year ago, soon realised the umd`s cost a fortune the games mostly sucked and you couldnt do anything on a shop bought psp, the DAX made made the CFW available to ta-082 users, i was on the verge of selling my psp as it gathered dust, but DAX brought it to life, now its customised to my personality and does a million things i use it everyday, thannks DAX, sony, sort your life out!

If this turns out to be true then SONY will lose out. A new PSP is not as attractive as one I can soup up. I'm sure they will have some "Download Special" or something like that and it will make minimal profits. Grandfathers and out of touch people will purchase and that will be enough for them to shat in peace. Even if the PSP was $99, the games are too expensive in today's economy. his ktime has come and gone. another will rise to the occassion. DAX made many contributions to the firmware scene. he will be missed. truthfully hes the reason i brought another psp thats right i owned one and traded it in. then DAX came on the scene and i got a new one for custom firmware use. if tis true i'll buy a new one so i can have the best of both worlds i cant lose my psp CFW i refuse so stop crying wish him well because he deserves a break not like we was paying him for his services and let another take the reigns and develope an even better CFW. there is ALWAYS someone that can do better than you even DAX has someone in his shadows thats better than him at this waiting for their MOMENT to shine. farewell DAX if its true u will be missed if its a HOAX this is not funny but all was said out of love and respect for a great man and programer, a man thats darn good in his craft. Reality check...

Its great what Dax has done for us. And Sony will probably hurt in the end unless they something really great with the PSP. A lot of you kinds need a reality check. Dax cost Sony and developers a lot of money through piracy. Given this, I severely doubt they would offer him anything other than a fine and/or jail time. They certainly would not offer him a job or some monetary incentive to stop developing CFW.

DA did a lot for the scene and now that he is having problems (legal, no time for himself, etc) and needs to quit then people start dumping on him for it like he is $hit now that he isn't going to be working on getting new hacked firmware out to the masses he is the biggest a$$hole in the world for not doing so? You need to understand that even hackers have real lives and those real lives can include legal problems for the hacking they do to help a community of users that probably have given him next to nothing back in return. He should be thanked excessively for all of the work he has done for the scene and not treated like a sellout, loser, etc. because he has to stop. I hope he will share with someone all his sourcecodes related to OE firmwares, but i agree that its very bad for evryone, especialy for ta 82 and above users who cant revert to official firmware and now they possible stuck in 3.40 for a while.... but! 3.40 is pretty good anyway who da ***** said that psp is dead? how many games u know askin for 3.50? God of War? its just rumors and u may allways make a dump of game (legaly owned) and fix with UMDgen strings about frimvare version requirements so if game dont use any scecific features of 3.51 it will run well on 3.40, but as i experienced 3.40 have pretty unstable POP module so i m not able 2 finish final fantasy 7, i was hopping 2 get 3.51 with updated POP module that will possibly have several bugfixes... Also guys dont forget about another custom firmware thats somewhere around here... i heard its pretty unstable but its just first steps... atleaste it have double recovery consoles ))) But i still didnt get why peoples leaving scene without finishing their last work? How about everybody go to his website and leave him a "Thank You" email. That would ease the pain. Can someone that knows him a little better than the rest of us try to find out why he quit? If he tells you though, you probably should not let it out. Reason why I say this is because, if Sony did indeed send him a threat, then we should make a petition and have every PSP owner on it. In the petition we can explain the benefits of Custom Firmware and how many PSP owners bought a PSP because of its capabilities. For instance, I use my PSP for as a Graphing Calc, a GPS Nav System (which isn't even available from Sony in USA yet), SMS client, text/typing notes in class (via the CF and a IRda keyboard), and much more. None of this would be possible without CF's. I for one would not have bought a PSP unless I could have used if for more than what Sony made it capable of doing. Also, look back at where the PSP scene has come from. Hasn't Custom Firmware and Homebrew not influenced the features the Sony added to their Firmware? Remember the Wipeout internet browser hack? What happened next? Sony incorporated a Browser into the PSP. Now Sony is making an ISO loader. Hasn't the Custom Firmware had any contribution to this? Come on Homebrew scene. Lets let Sony know what Dark_Alex has done for the PSP. I mean how much he has helped in Sony's PSP sales. Lets make a petition. QJ , will you help us make this happen? What happened to Alex? The Story

This is what happened to Dark-Alex and why he quit. It all started last week, Alex was programming 3.50 OE-A when he got a knock on his door. He answered it and a man in a black uniform was standing there. He asked who he was and the man replied "I'm Ed Kaw, owner of Kaw Corp, and I am here to offer you a free sample of our newest product, liquid apples." Alex was getting hungry, he sent Mathew to the store to pick up a few bars of Hersey's with almonds but he wasn't back yet, so he said, "Well, I never heard of Kaw Corp but i'm starving! I'll take 'em!" Dark Alex took the jar from the man and closed the door. He went back to his computer, with the jar and opened it. He said to himself "this stuff looks strange" but he didn't care he was getting more and more hungry as he thought. So what did he do you ask? He ate all of the stuff in the jar. Shorty after he started feeling weird. He thought it was nothing but right before he finished making the new ISO Loader he got extremely dizzy and passed out. When he awoke he seen the man in the black uniform again and noticed he wasn't home anymore. He was in a weird black room with pictures of the devil on the wall. He thought he died and went to hell until he saw the Sony logo up next to the picture of the devil. "I'm... I'm in the Sony hq main building!" he said alowd. "Shutup you ugly piece of trash" the man in black said as he slapped alex across his face. Then, a man in a red cape with a red pitchfork approached him. He could see his name tag, it said "SCEI President". "Oh my god it's the playstation president!" Alex tried to run but the president stabbed him with his pitchfork. "HOW DARE YOU TRY TO RUN FROM ME! HOW DARE YOU" he said. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" he then asked. Alex replied, "The president of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc?" The president replied, "YES!, and guess what? I dont like your custom firmware DAX, not one bit, but since I just killed a few kids for downloading homebrew, im in a good mood and will let you go, ON ONE CONDITION. YOU MUST STOP DEVELOPMENT ON ALL YOUR CRAP, OK"? Alex replied "OK OK OK!!!! Lemme first start of by saying if you upgrade now, we don't care. You'll be the ones begging for a downgrader in the future. DAX is going to release 3.50/3.51 OE when everything is all said and done. Trust me on that one. Second, in the event of newer firmware, we still got Booster and Fanjita. We can use DevHook until 3.60+ IE-A is released. But honestly, calm the ***** down. We have emulators to hold you over, and there's an endless surplus of RPG's to hold you off until there's an update...

A terrible loss for the community

This is just a tragedy. As a follower of the homebrew scene, we all know that DAX paved the way for the downgraders and custom firmwares. DAX, if you read these comments, then first I want to say Thank you. You are a genius. I also beg you to reconsider, please don't turn your back on us when we need you the most! Sony are Doomed

Well, since i believe that Custom Firmware Releases are going to get alot less frequent over the next few years i think its safe to say that by Sony scaring Dark_Alex away they have doomed themselves to a degree. People love there homebrew enough to stay on custom firmware and if a new custom firmware isn't made for the latest firmware this means they won't be able to play the newest games that require the latest firmware update, so i'm guessing because people love their homebrew enough they may resort to using ISO's instead of the latest games. Guys, a few points... Firstly, and most importantly, the thanks to Dark-Alex that he deserves for the time and expertise he has brought to the PSP scene. Without him, there is no doubt that the world of CFWs would not have come as far as it has as quickly as it has. Secondly, since DAX was not exactly discreet about his real-life identity, Sony know who he is and where he is, which makes re-appearing under a different "online" name a bit difficult. They can still serve legal papers to his home address, whoever he pretends to be. Thirdly, whatever his reasons for quitting the scene, it is his choice. Nothing lasts forever. He is just a young guy, doing his studies and having some fun hacking PSPs. He is not Neo of Matrix fame, he is not "the one". He is one of many, and the work he has contributed to will carry on in one form or another. The hacking community will not let this be the end...the whole ethos of hacking is that you will not be beaten by the big guy! DAX is clearly a talented coder, and I hope he has a fruitful career wherever he ends up. I thank him for his contribution to the homebrew world, and more importantly for showing others the direction to go. I salute you!

Sony included ISO loaders on the Official 3.5x firmwares. if DAX make an OE firmware maker, his ISO loader will be violating the patent on the Original firmware. he may only op to hack the ISO loader on the firmware via his OE maker but that will take quite a lot of work/time, and Sony may also find a loophole to sue DAX on the said processes. dont worry folk DAX may eventually come back when Thought of a way to circumvent a checks to pin him.

End of an Era

DAX is a devoted, un-questionable kind genius and has given PSP users hundreds of thousands of hours to play homebrew and enjoy all the latest titles. This guy must have spent solid hours giving and giving without asking for anything in return, and IMO this is the attitude of a true saint. The business with the possible "website hack" puzzles me. If he has given up the homebrew scene for good, then why has he removed the paypal link from the front page? Surely if I left and people were sad and wanted to show their final appreciations, then I would leave a paypal link for followers to pay their last tributes. Wouldn't you?

I think Dark Alex should be listed in the Hall of Fame. He is a legend and will be remembered all the time. Thanks for what u have done for us.

Btw, just a question that has confused me a bit over this whole thing... In plenty of places (you can Google for them) Dark Alex is quoted as saying that he was skipping 3.50OE and going straight to 3.51OE. Now, if 3.51 was simply released to patch Noobz' Illuminati exploit, what would be the benefit of having 3.51OE as opposed to 3.50OE? There would be no new functionality compared to 3.50... Anyone else worked this mystery out?

I just like to say: Good luck with the future DAX. Now then, hes site could have been hacked as it has been before. He may finish off 3.51 OE-A and then leave for good. He may have gotten threatened by sony because now is a good time to threaten DAX because of PS1 games and the new titles. But being clever as he is he must have givin someone else the instructions and then left so that sony would think that DAX has really quitted. (thats what i think) 3.51 OE-A may be finished by another person. There are quite a few possibilities. He WOULD NOT quit. He must have been very smart and handed over some help to the other members of the team. Now that DAX is gone what are the team? They have to still make stuff otherwise they are not a team are they? It will be finished...trust me.

Good luck DAX you made a great difference in how we use our PSP's. Just as an example, being able to play all the latest PSP games and having the ability to play emulators. So much easier then keeping PSP at 1.5 and having to use Devhook every time you want to use the most current firmware.

If this is true and Sony are threatening or bribing DAX to quit making OE Firmware then why don't we all just go over to Homebrew. Which is now possible because all Firmware versions up to 3.50 are downgradable thanks to Team Noobz. If we all went over to homebrew. Sony would see the fact that we're not buying there commerical UMD's and were just screwing them over. Surely if the vast population did this Sony would have to give in on this hold they have over DAX? DAX if you are not returning thanks for your OE Firmware. it's made my PSP more enjoyable. I hope people like Team NoobZ can take over if you are not returning to the OE Scene.

correct me if im wrong on this one... Dark_Alex has given me a lot of good times with my psp, thats why i am on a OE FW. With OE he made it to easy for us, well thanks for that! :) other than that my first thought was that he was paid off by sony. It's quite logic to think that, because of the fact he just left one day on the other. But thinking twice would make this thought not that logic anymore... why is that? If sony paid off this guy i think they would given him around 30-50k $ and that are pure losses while on the other hand paying someone off would mean Sony knows who this guy is then why not sue him and it might be some cheaper plus the guy would prolly do some time meaning sources might never see daylight... And reading thru some of the comments i saw someone who said "my psp will collect some dust in a few months". My psp will go down the same path, and i think we are not the only 2 on this planet who think like that so that makes Sony loose even more cash, no psp use equals no money for sony. And for this first and second thought this news might be true he left the scene without any money of Sony... The only thing about this thought is, did he ***** around with copyrighted material (thus make Sony able to sue him)... or not?

Let him do what hes doin and keep quiet about it. The longer everyone makes him such a hot issue the longer till he can safely come back. Sony would only hire him if they could tie him in there basement, and force him to work. They would never trust a hacker(a very talented hacker).
