DaedalusX64 - Image 1

I'm sure more than a handful of you have been wondering whatever happened to the Daedalusx64 project. We were expecting something for everyone's Nintendo 64 emulator of choice for the PSP sometime towards the end of December, and now, we finally hear of an update.

Here's Kreationz posting a dev status update on their DX64 forums the other day. Looks like DaedalusX64 Beta 2 will be rolling out shortly, if the stars align just right:

Well first the apology. Sorry I've been gone so long life just got busy between work and other things, but I should have down time over the next week to get back in the game so to speak. I've started going over the myriad of changes to the code since I left and will be looking at my prior ideas that I haven't implemented yet. So real quick here's my plan for the next week or so.

Get caught up on all the forums. (Got a lot of reading to do.) Go over all the revision changes I missed. Test some old bugs to see if they are still there. Then get back to diving into the code. I'm going to look at cleaning up the code, blasting a few quick bugs, checking stability issues and getting ready for the Beta 2. I've been talking with the other devs about this and we feel it's getting close to time for it, so I'm going to be shooting for the end of the month on this (but it may take a bit longer) and trying to pack in as many bug fixes/graphical fixes for as many of the playable titles as possible.

He followed up this announcement with another post from yesterday. Now, you guys get to join in on the fun. Just like how StrmnNrmn had his own art contest for Daedalus some time back, the team is doing the same for DaedalusX64. Here we have an announcement of the contest, plus info on a minor bug fix:

In anticipation of Beta 2, I have begun a new EBOOT Background/Icon contest. I will personally be the moderator for this. On the code side of things:

[!] Fixed White Ghosting in Mario Kart 64 (Hopefully with performance issues this time.)

Also the texture cache can be flushed less often now which should allow for a slight performance boost in some circumstances. (More may be able to be done here but I have to do some testing.)

Now I know a lot of you guys may be disappointed, and are raring to get your hands on the next release, but don't worry. I'm sure you guys can busy yourselves in the mean time with fleshing out your vector art skills and Photoshop manipulation. A release is coming, so all we have to do is sit patiently and wait. No sense in rushing things, right guys?

» I've pratically lost all faith...

... I just don't see an N64 emulator working at (near) full speed within the PSP's lifetime. It would be nice, but it seems to be a dead-end street.

» Great Job!

As long as work is still being done, changes and improvements will always be made. All I want is full speed OOT! DX64 team, keep up the good work.

» Pokemon Stadium 2

Hey Kreationz,

Can you please take a look at Pokemon Stadium 2?

It's running almost perfect without sound. It would be awesome if this game could be on the list of perfect games as well. Thank you for the your hard work and effort and the sharing.

» Just needs to be at least

Just needs to be at least 30 frames/sec or higher.

For full speed we need 60, but I don't this is possible :( Doesn't it go by polygon/sec or something?

» Rev249 is even now good!

Wow, I´m so excited about the release of Beta2! Because I already tried the latest Rev and it is great.

Zelda - Ocarina of Time will be soon in fullspeed!

Yeah, I've been trying to look for more specific details about it, but Kreationz hasn't said a word yet. We'll keep you guys posted when we hear word. But look on the brighter side... that gives you more time to have fun with Photoshop!

» Yeah but...

Whilst I would also *love* to see the N64 run at near full speed with quality sound I have to admit I'm not overly excited by these releases.

That's not to say I don't support the project at all, but rather it's frustrating to have yet another beta release where you fire it up in anticipation only to yet again feel let down by choppy framerates and ***** sound. Another release and install for an extra 2fps? Why bother?

The fact the PSP can hand PSX games at full speed shows it's *not* a matter of power that's holding this project back, so I disagree with the above point fully.

This project is now more of a pipedream than reality for me - I'm content to just sit back and wait until you can actually play a smooth (ie over 30fps constantly) N64 game with near perfect sound and no stuttering.

Yeah, some of you might lay claim to the fact that you can get 'blah blah' running close to that (or even above) but the fact is, the average game you load up through this emu at present is a horrid mess and nothing will kill your gaming enthusiasm more than loading up an old classic you loved on the original console and trying to kid yourself it's the same experience on the PSP, whilst you try to ignore the low, choppy fps and crappy sound.

As with all emulation, unless it's near perfect speed you kind of miss the point of the exercise.

I want to see this EMU meet it's fullest potential as much as any of you, but for the moment I'd rather sit back and let the beta testers iron it out until it represents something worth space on my memory stick.

Until then, this project is proof of concept, beta code and should be viewed as such.

» well put

I agree 100 percent. I appluade the effort on the coders part and will continue to hope for a functional emulator, but as such this will not satisfy my N64 fix.

» @ _YOUR_MOM_

wow! you gettin mad over nothing. take it easy. and i believe your missing a few words in your post so it looks like your from some foriegn country using a translator or something. just work on your english so when you get mad and decide to post, it actually makes sense.

» Are you mentally retarded?

Dead-End Street? See guys, its people like this that don't deserve to enjoy Dx64, especially when we made MANY people eat their words on the revival of the Daedalus project, (they did say sorry though, on the site, on qj, and in my inbox) Just because you don't know squat about coding doesn't mean we're all lost. There has been over 250 revisions (and counting) ever since the BETA 1 release in November, we're working AS FAST/BEST that we possibly can, and lemme re-state NOBODY IS GETTING PAID!-- We don't survive in this world by making this so chill out

» GREAT JOB!!!

Im always going to be a daedalus fan.

I once read that it would take about 4 years for 100% speed, so i guess i have 3 left.

I enjoy playing mario 64 on psp. My friends always stare at it with envy.

by Galduke - 2009-01-20 13:26
» About the power thing...

Doesn't the 64 have a processor almost 3x as powerful as the PS1's? Even so I do believe full speed 64 emulation is well within grasp, though I know nothing about coding so my opinion is mute.

by b2dub2 - 2009-01-20 15:41
» It will get there

These people are trying to emulate the system to its original glory. It will take some time, though. Alot of time. Since they are so nice, and involved with the psp community, they release betas here and there. If you wanna sit back and wait for fullspeed 64 on psp, then ignore all the betas, wait for the final release someday. I get all hyped up for release, and it is a little dissapointing, then you notice how it is now perfect, here and there in some games, and this is fixed, thats fixed, etc. Some games are now fullspeed. What if that was your fav game? Then you go tell them the bugs you noticed, that othersa havent. It gets better. Thats how it works. Im glad they're so dedicated. Great work guys, Shinydude, where have you been?

by Hotsuma - 2009-01-22 13:34
» Since you're the one coding, and you think it's possible...

... maybe YOU'RE the one who is mentally retarded. I'm not blaming the coders for anything except their persistent reassurance that it IS possible to get an N64 emulator running at full speed within the PSP's lifetime. Sure, it is possible that we will eventually see a development, but I have been watching the progression of the PSP N64 emulators and they have seen such small improvements it just seems very unlikely that anything will get done. The fact that you don't get paid to do this - and, actually, you DO get paid if you consider donations as payment (which is still payment regardless of whether you profit or not) - only supports my point that we won't see an N64 emulator up to the PJ64 standards anytime soon (that is of course unless someone gets hold of some source code from Nintendo). You guys can have at it all you want, but I won't waste any of my time beta testing any new releases, and I wouldn't be offended if you all just stopped trying, because I really think it isn't worth it at this point. Thanks for the effort, but there are so many areas that your time could be better spent. Three years ago this could've had a lot of potential, but at this point I'd rather just dust off my N64.
