Daedalus

The most talked-about emulator has received yet another update from its dedicated coder - StrmnNrmn. StrmnNrmn told us previously that we would receive this build with less features and more optimizations, and that is exactly what we got. This coding-machine managed to get the new clipping method working and actually excerpts better results and is more efficient.

We've already seen a few user-created Daedalus R7's with the modified line that would provide a significant increase in speed, and this version has that fix along with many others! This is, as you would expect, the fastest version of Daedalus available and is looking better and better each release. Mario is now fully playable (in my opinion) and has come a long way since the initial release. The following has been changed in this new version (R8) of Daedalus -
  • [^] Replaced all uses of sceCtrlReadBufferPositive with sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive.
  • [^] Various known value optimisations for the dynamic recompilation engine.
  • [^] Various texture cache optimisations and rendering optimisations.
  • [+] Implemented a new clipping method which is more efficient and gives better results.
  • [-] Removed 'tesselate large triangles' setting.
  • [+] Added option to reset emulator to the main menu.
  • [^] No longer use index buffers for rendering.
  • [^] Implement matrix multiplication using VFPU.
  • [^] Implement vertex transform and lighting code using VFPU.
  • [^] Implement clipping code using VFPU.
  • [^] Minor AddTri optimisations.
  • [^] Free background and font textures while emulator is running to free VRAM.
  • [!] Fixed bug in default controller config (c-down and dpad-down were broken)

I never understand how these updates get posted but the most obvious question is never answered along that huge list of improvements: Is it playable yet? Does the audo work?

nice i tried those pre-R8 releases and they didnt do much. looking at the changes i know there'll be a noticable speed increase.

For those of you with much higher standards, such as wanting audio at this stage - no it wont be here. But its one step closer. And i believe strmnnrmn can achieve a decent end product by the end of this ride. But at the moment we're still going!

i just tested this and there are immediate noticable differences. i tested mario 64 and immediately it boots a lot faste

outside in the garden i used to get 11/12fps. Right now im getting 22fps max, and 13fps at the very least. On average you'll get about 17fps outside - very playable. It starts off low then you'll notice speed rising quickly.

inside the main area of hte castle its around the same, 17fps usually often dropping to 15

as usual rooms before entering levels are literally full speed.

lastly, i tested the snow level which required 3 stars, since in my experience this was very recourse heavy. i used to get 8-10 fps in this level. now im getting an average of about 11.5, maximum about 12.22 and lowest 10. This doesnt seem to be a significant increase. The level doesnt run too well still. However if you like to play this level as much as i do, you'll notice the small speed boost. Note the interior part of the level where you race the penguin runs much better - i got about 17-18fps consistently

if strmnnrmn reads these comments id also like to thank him for the clipping code - mario 64's graphics are flawless.

Yeah i was sick of the those "1st post!" lol.......

Anyway playing in the first area is around 20+ fps.In the bomb omb level around 14+fps.And in the castle where the fountain it around 28-31fps

by sdg - 2006-08-25 13:56

it's playable

doesn't mean it has to have sound for you to play

and can you get super smash to work?

by Talidan - 2006-08-25 13:56

Just tested mario kart 64.

The menu runs at an average speed of about 12fps - not so good.

I tested one race which is the Luigi Raceway. Upon starting i noticed that the cloud with the traffic light has odd animations - something i dont think i saw in R7. other than that the graphics look great.

As for the speed - in R7 i didnt like to play mario kart because it ran about 1/3 of the speed - races would take AGES. Now im getting a consistent rate of 13fps. Doesnt sounds a lot but its a BIG improvement. Not enoguh to make me play MK64 on my psp though (yet) since races are still slow. One annoying thing which existed in R7 is that there is a sudden 'backward jerk' every so often while playing MK64. this still exists. it dosent affect the overall gameplay too much but its annoying. StrmNrmn explained the cause of this in his blog if you want to check it out.

okay this is the last game i'll test - Super smash bros.

The intro movie thing runs full speed - though lots of textures are purple (namely the hand and curtains)

Now i got to the menu where it asks you to press start...

I press start and it crashes. No improvement on the super smash bros situation im afraid.

by PS2MAN - 2006-08-25 14:23
» Gets better and Better BUT some things get worse too.

Pilot wings No longer loads ANYTHING when you load it, the background is just pitch black.

Goldeneye refuses to boot completly.

Zelda has a few more graphical issues involving Black/purple squares and splattered textures, watch the rolling demo to see what I mean.

Super smash bros still refuses to load with the recompiler on, but with it on it loads everything purple but at a high 30fps or so.

Aside from this the EMU keeps getting better as alwies. I was VERY surprised with Mario 64. 20 fps with perfect graphics compared to the 8fps perfect graphics of before? Talk about improvement.

@38 right now he's making it run faster then he will update it to run more games, and he has done a good job and has shown that you can have M64 run higher than 15 fps

Starfox runs like 80% full speed! it's so awesome , the only think that takes time is the intro that appears in the first level but after that when you get in the game it's so fast it's unbeleivable , I really want sound now , not sure if it is going at 80% full speed or maybe even 90% full speed! it's awesome!

by lordroba - 2006-08-25 15:19
» >>

another nice build. Mario 64, and Mario Kart are nice and playable. I'm amazed how well the new clipping mode works, it's frigging awsome. (Zelda runs, but still has some texture/speed issues)

btw, I think that using Mario as a base will help him optimize the emulator to use the PSP hardware much faster than if he was playing around with a bunch of games at a time. This way, after he finishes a general build that will run Mario at/near full speed, I think we can expect him to make tweaks to run other games better.

Well said. Strmnrmn deserves much credit for all his hard work. He isn't being paid to do this and we don't need all the negative feedback. If you want a perfect running emulator why dont u go making it your damn self!! Strmnrmn keep up the great work and know that you have fans rooting for you and content with all the progess you've made t he last couple of months. You have a huge fanclub that appreciates your work and are not ignorant. Keep up the great work and believe me you've done more than anyone of those who complain. Im a sure fan and am following closely your work. Thank you and to those who bash on Strmnrmn " WE DONT NEED UR CRITICISM" buy the ds and crawl back into your holes!!!

I've just realized this is basically a Super Mario 54 Game instead of emulator :S This thing basically made Mario 64 full speed.

In my opinion she should of made Daedalus work on a large rom file so that the rest of the games would run at good speed.

60 FPS means its playable? Prey on the xbox 360 runs at 30fps and it plays just fine. These n64 games at 60fps would like like they were moving in fast forward.

» for those ungratful bastards

if u dont like this emu then dont use it no 1 cares if it confuses u or not... if u think this is mario emu then so be it but the creator is aim to make it work as a n64 emu and he can call it that. he will probly make it work in the future.

I like playing mario 64 ive havnt tried any other game yet cause i never had an n64 so i havnt realy gotten into any other game yet. i dont care if he is only making htis emu run mario 64 faster. but im sure once he gets it workign better he will work harder on adding sound and the ability to play more and more games. but as of now he can only do so much.

@52 thanks for making me aware of the configfiles for controls cause i really wanted z to be l on the psp.

also thanks again for the wonderful program

by Aaron A - 2006-08-25 17:06
» 34 is right

I play N64 games on my PC all the time and they read 60fps all the time. That is full speed and playable. Mario is NO WHERE NEAR full speed, its not even half the speed except for in the level rooms.

Good job on creating this but i think we are about 30 updates away from it running full speed. Maybe once the PS emu is released by sony that will give the programmers something to pick apart and learn new tricks on speeding this up a bit with sound.

But until then keep up the good work. Add a frameskip with the next one.

» 30fps or 60fps

i have tested mario on my computer using a fps ajustable emulator ant ran it at 30fps, it seemed full speed and totaly normal, then i ran it at 60fps and was suprised by the results. the speed remaind the same, but the game was alot smoother ant chrisp, almost like comparing a game running on the psp at 222mhz and 333mhz, so i think fps dosnt directly link to emulation speed, btt the rate it can be displayed, which is why frame skip dosnt make much difference in these early stages, 30fps may be full speed.

by Anonymous - 2006-08-25 18:32
» Just Dont Bother

There are alot of ppl who keep saying the same thing over and over in the comments in qj, both good and bad. Critisism is not that good to hear but thats what makes for a better emulator. It does get annoying but when you talk about how something is bad, and you talk about that something right next to the creator, they feel bad. But then they try to make it more better so the person/ppl dont give out More critisism, thus keeping them happy.

There is no easy way to say this(or a way that might keep everyone happy), but you sorta dont want to make the person making something happy with what he has built. They might still make a great thing but probably not as good as it could be if there was critisism because then they dont know what to fix. In THIER mind they might be thinking "everything is ok now. im finished". But they might not see that there is a huge mistake still not fixed.

Its annoying I know but deal with it. That is life. It is how many of the big companies were able to Become BIG, by fixing problems on their product. And they still havent sttopped looking for critisism. they give out surveys and add little signs on their product that say "Call us if experiencing problems", so then they can make a good product better.

Mario 64- playable

Quake II- 10 fps average from menu to in game. In game is covered by the weird purple textures, though.

Starcraft- Doesn't start.

Mario Party 3 - Doesn't start.

Smash Bros. - Crashes in game.

Zelda - Still sort of slow fps, but playable.

Rogue Squadron - Doesn't start.

Starfox- Kinda playable

Goldeneye- Mine crashed :/ So did PDZ. Not like they'd be playable anyway; but it might've been the rom versions. I had odd ones to play online with my friends.

Episode I Racer- Takes awhile to start., crashes at a black screen.

Mario Party 1 - 50+ FPS on the ads and stuff. In game has about 15-20. Can dip down lower. Crashes after you press start in the intro with everyone in a circle.

Didn't bother Donkey Kong 64 Conker's or Banjo :/ Didn't wanna waste time uploading. I didn't want to try any of the WWF wrestling games because they don't even work on the real n64 emulators for pc (most of the games don't.) Didn't try Majora's Mask either considering the timer it gives us and how hard it would be to play it and deal with a time. Anyone wanna try the NFL/NBA games?

30 FPS is full speed framerate wise. If 60 FPS is allowed it would just make things smoother like zodionic mentioned. I suggest people go play Mario 64 on the PSP and find an area that gives 20fps constant. It'll feel like it's full speed.

Destruction Derby64 - Menu screwed but the game itself loads. A framerate of 5 so not playable. Also smoke is displayed with purple texures.

Quake64 - Menu looks good but runs at 5 fps. If you like purple levels then this is your game. :) It runs at 5 fps.

Ridge Racer64 - Menu screwed up but runs very fast. In game it runs at 10 fps so it's almost playable. Lots of textures are purple but i think that this could be a playable title in the next releases of the emulator.

» AWESOME!

WOW! A lot of games are REALLY moving now! This is soooo cool! Am I a douchebag though for suggesting that you use Zelda as an example insead of Mario? I mean, it was the N64's best game...but hey what the hell do I know, I can barely do Visual Basic without crying...Good luck with audio!

by Ninkul - 2006-08-25 22:11
» @ #16..

What are you on about, its fully playable. Fully functional would cover "sound" features. Not fully playable would mean crashing at menus/etc..

Anyways, great job StrmnNrmn! Great update, you're keeping a large amount of the homebrew community alive & happy! =)

» *****s

Wow QJ is really full of pricks! (Apologies to those that are not screaming for Sound or throwing their rattles out of their prams about some games not working).

To 16> What about deaf people? Are all video games suddenly unplayable to them as they can't hear the sound? Don't be such a complete *****face.

To those *****ing about only Mario 64 running, what bollocks, if you'd actually read the guys blog you would see how many things he is currently working on. There is a bug in Banjo Kazooie, Mario Kart and some others that he has identified that has to do with screen refreshes and he will work on this for the next version as well as promising to look into why Goldeneye won't run (which he has mentioned before is a rom specific problem).

This is only the 8th *****ing release of this emulator, its a work in progress! Sound will only come once the framerate, graphics and compatibility are further optimised.

Anyway Strnmnrmn will be working on more optimisations, the menu/gui and savestates for the next version. That should shut some of you ungrateful *****ers up at least.

I heard about that gGBA emulator ,which uses JIT to run faster code. What does that mean? It means that who created gGBA can run C# code on the PSP?

C# would be better for emulators ,the compiler can run code way faster then C++.

by Random - 2006-08-25 23:06
» JIT

JIT stands for Just In Time, its a method like (but different to)Daedalus's dynamic recompiler that executes code only when its required in order to speed the emulation cycle.

you really do need to start working on other games besides mario 64. it's a great program and i appreciate the effort, but if you all keep saying how great it is already, why do you care if it gets updated? it's because you want better gameplay. well we want better gameplay on other games. if something is great, sometimes people don't take the time to make it greater. the people complain because it's basicly like getting a 1.5 psp that can't play anything cept umd disks and can't upgrade. it can play SOME games, but won't play ALL the games. it's defective and nobody would want that. on the other hand, you can get a 1.5 psp that can play homebrew, roms, games, and emulate other firmwares which plays games (thx to the people who made that possible). so understand people complain for a reason

the way to make this emulator is to make different versions for each game. then you can get the best performance possible for each one.

i dont see the problem with improving mario64 right now, once he has that perfect then he can start improving other games so there playable.

by SeikenZ - 2006-08-26 01:36
» Read this bastards!

imagine all the time he has to put in to make more games playable, you don't got the right to complain about something which is done in someones spare time and gives it for free.

SPEED GOES BEFORE SOUND, isnt that obvious?? damn..

AND YES, I also have fav n64 games, like Super Smash Brothers. AND YES, they are not playable yet!

by Feark - 2006-08-26 01:47
» Mario64 is the only rom (right now) that is playable.

Ofcourse, it has yet no sound, but because of the speed improvement (which is about almost 100% faster in the stage levels in Mario64) and also that the save works now, it is a big step forward from the older release [v7].

Think the rom just need 25fps to be full playable, and with sound on that, this one will be best EMU that has been develop/ported/whatever to PSP.

Keep it up Strmnnrmn.

by pspcrack - 2006-08-26 02:27
» TO ALL THOSE ILLETERATES OUT THERE!!!

for all those saying that mario 64 isnt even half playable because its only 25 fps and 60 means perfect, technically anything above 30 fps is great speed, FOR ALL THOSE SAYING 60 is PERFECT: true, but the difference between lets say 35 fps and 60 is so slight the human eye cant tell, 60 fps just makes the animation smoother. not the speed.

by toxic-snipe - 2006-08-26 02:39

» Gettin' Better!

This emulator is getting very impressive now. Two things that concern me though (they aren't major, but they annoy me).

1. Will the control scheme change one day (I'm assuming that it will, since this prolly just a temporary solution while he looks toward optimizations and stuff).

2. When I start a game, I can't see the progress for how long it takes to load the ROM. It's just a black screen. It'd be nice if I could see the progress. Also, it takes WAY too long to load ROMs now. Will that get fixed eventually?

Either way, great job StrmnNrmn!

» 1 of the best emu's

I hate these people that ask for 60fps and sound, and if the emu can't do it, then its not playable, and they won't try it. Even some games on a real N64 don't run full speed, theres always some slowdown when things get crazy (star wars: ep1 racer). So I don't know the big deal is, I'm like Daedalus very much, looking at mario's big 3D face if fun lol, and showing it to friends, they get blown away. Keep up the good work man.

by Coc - 2006-08-26 09:43
» YESSSSS

This is so unbelievably awesome. I have been plugging away for the past few hours at Mario 64 and I got 10 more stars in the same time it took me to get 1 or 2 on R6/7 (missing jumps drives me crazy, especially when you have 6fps).

Using Mario 64 as a test variable has worked out awesome so far. If we started using other commercial games as a Daedalus test bed, we could diversify the amount of bugs and therefore crushed bugs, HOWEVER strmnnrmn may be more interested in getting Mario 64 to run 100% perfect before he starts worrying about every ROM in the library. It's all about the scientific process, if you are patient then you will get what is coming.

I tested Mario Kart 64 also, and I get about 12fps on average, enough to be considered playable. I successfully completed the first two Mariokart GP races in 150cc mode, first place even :) The only problem I noticed was that the new clipping code seems to affect the indexing of the sprites and what direction drivers/lakitu/etc. are supposed to be pointing at certain directions. For example, after you finish the race and you're watching your player do fly-bys, they will be facing you at an angle 50% of the time, and facing down the track the other 50%. It's rather intermittent, so it looks like they're dancin a crazy jig. Lakitu looks hilarious at the starting line.

Other than that, DAMN! Did you guys notice how fast he released this? He told us he intended to wait on R8 because he had some work to do on it, and I was thinking "ok cool, another couple weeks no biggie" But here we are, playing R8 on this very Saturday. StrmnNrmn, words can't describe how awesome you are. You are a godsend to the PSP homebrew coding scene and I seriously hope you stick with this project, it will definitely take you places

Lastly, to all the moaning, complaining, grammatically castastrophic kids that are filling this comments list with negativity: IF YOU WANT SOMETHING IN THE NEXT RELEASE, THE SOURCE CODE IS BUNDLED WITH REVISION 8. FEEL FREE TO RECOMPILE IT YOURSELF AND ADD WHATEVER YOU LIKE, THEN MAYBE YOU'LL GET YOUR OWN NEWS POST ON PSPUPDATES!! Oh wait, you don't know how to code. Or submit bug reports. I guess you should just keep complaining as if it will do some good in the world. Thank you for your generous contributions to the community. /sarcasm

It's incredible to see where this project has gone; and obviously this is the best emulator out there.
