Daedalus R8 - Coming Sooner Than Expected? [Update]

Daedalus - Another Speed Increase

[UPDATE]

Well, it seems that some brilliant member of our comments section (Visigotico) took it upon himself to re-compile the emulator with this one-line fix. He has also taken the liberty as to compile a separate version with frame skip set at 1. StrmnNrmn has stated that adding frame skip will not show a drastic increase, but Visigotico compiled it anyways (maybe to hush those complainers of frame skip). According to StrmnNrmn, frame skipping will only add about 0.5 fps to the overall rate - nothing noticeable.

You can view the original article below the line to find out what you can expect from StrmnNrmn in a few days; the speed increases for a few games due to this fix can be found below as well. The download  is not of StrmnNrmn's next version but rather a small user update to R7 with the speed fix.

Download: [Daedauls Pre-R8 Release - Compiled by Visigotico]

StrmnNrmn never ceases to amaze us with his optimizations and constant updates to his Daedalus N64 emulator. StrmnNrmn originally ported the Daedalus N64 emulator over the PSP earlier on this year, and since then has been improving the emulator's speed and compatibility non-stop. We've seen several new builds come before us, each one better than the previous with mainly speed increases - something of which everyone loves to hear.

It seems that the man behind the fastest N64 emulator on the PSP has done it again - he has improved the overall speed of Daedalus. After reading a single post by Soatome over at PS2Dev, he realized a crucial part in his code that could be easily improved/modified. This single line was change from sceCtrlReadBufferPositive to sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive. Strmn states that this single adjustment has improved the speed of many games by a few frames due to the stalling for a frame every time the ROM read the status of the pad (controller/buttons). StrmnNrmn has listed a few of the speed increases (very impressive from R7) -

Mario now runs at at steady 15fps in most places, and around 20fps indoors etc (it reaches over 35fps in the main menu, and close to 30 in some scenes.) Zelda now runs at around 8fps in game, and up to 20fps in certain places. The 'nintendo' logo at the start runs at over 90fps :D The MarioKart Nintendo logo now runs at 30fps, and the main menu (with the flag) runs at a solid 15fps. In game it's a comfortable 12fps. Starfox runs at around 15fps - the intro runs at 25-30fps. Quest64 runs at 20fps.

Due to this unexpected speed increase, StrmnNrmn has stated that we may see a release of R8 sooner than later! Although no specific time table was given, we should definetly see a release by the end of the week or early next week.

NOTE - Please download R7 first and then copy this folder over to your PSP's directory, it only contains the updated eboot (not the other required files)

Thanks Branin for sending in the tip, but us bloggers didn\'t get notified about it until I had already started the article after I saw StrmnNrmn\'s blog when I woke up.

1st post hopefully ;)

But when are we going to see frame skip introduced? This all means nothing to me if it's still taking twice as long to do everything.

Crazy how one word in a line of code could make that big of an increase in speed. 15fps constant in Mario? Daaayim, we're(he's) gettin close, I'm startin to get excited.

When this does hit playable speeds I'm going to be eternally grateful of you, StrmnNrmn.

It's not about performence. It's about being able to play it without it feeling slugish, and taking twice as long to do everything.

That is amazing news. 15 fps is GREAT, and 20 fps is perfectly playable. If he could get it to run at 20 fps for most games, I'd be set.

I never would have imagined that so much progress could have been made on something like this!

20 fps being playable is only in emulators where frame skipping is used and helps the speed. since this emulator doesnt use frame skipping, wouldnt full speed have to be 60 fps?

to ne1 thinking of y no frameskip is included, reason: frame skip is used to skip graphical renders of the game, this is useless in this case because the graphical rendering is have no problem being displayed, except for minor little polygons. the real bottleneck is the code itself. you cant skip processes, workin on the psp's code from a ported emu is like workin to make a curved road straight, and which makes it harder since there is only 1 person workin on that road. frameskip will only be useful if the code is perfectly able to process faster than the graphics being rendering. which will take quiet a while, to be able to fully acheive the speed he needs, he will have to continue working mainly on the what the processor is processing.

to people that cant appreciate what this guy is doing for the community i would suggest that u hold ur tongue, or else you might just loose it in your stupidity

15fps constant is damn good for this early emulator. Once it hits 24fps constant I'll be happy. If a 64 emu can run this fast on the PSP, a psx emu should run at full speed then.

People asking for 30+ fps and so on. The native n64 system would not even get over those fps on most games. Turn it on and play GoldenEye for like 10 mins. The game is choppy. As long as the fps could stay above 25fps the emu would be just about perfect.

if you guys go to [WEBSITE REMOVED, DO NOT LINK TO ROM SITES] and download mario 64 there, one of the roms in the set has a hacked version that runs at double speed, and it flys on the psp! one problem, there is no save setting for in the daedalus.ini, but if one of you guys fix that, you\'l have a full speed mario 64 rom, and as a sidenote, maybe someone could create an app that doubles the roms internal speed

Hello QJ.net community

We at Sony are trying to rid PSP's of hombrew by encouraging to update your firmware. The 3.00 firmware will include a Playstation emulator that will allow you to play all your favorite games of the Playstation era. We will reveal the prices of the Playstation roms later this year. We consider hombrew activity illegal and we do not encourage to use hombrew. We at Sony are trying to make the PSP community a friendly enviroment.

And so does this emulator. N64 games are generally more entertaining than the PS2 to PSP ports of cheesy games. I do like the Katamari game for the PSP. GTA:LCS was sort of a disappointment except when it let me downgrade after I foolishly updated to 2.5 and then 2.6.

PSP games just don't have a certain quality that the N64 games had... there's a name for it, I just can't remember... oh yeah, it's called FUN.

Why would a person working at Sony be here? wait a minute.....no it couldnt be. You wouldnt happen to be some kid with a updated PSP would you? lol. Besides, even if we couldnt use devhook to emulate a higher firmware version, im sure we could make something like it. U see, its like u can run a N64 game with a rom, and if u cant do that, then make ur own version of the game that is compatible. Im sure we could make a copy of a new firmware, with modifications to security, because on a 1.50, well....u can do just about anything.

i found that i can't get FPS over 10 outside the castle in mario 64 and in some of the small rooms i can't get FPS over 13, all using the frame skip virsion. so it must be only in the real R8 that you can get up to 15 FPS, not in this patch. also i used the speed mario rom everyone is talking about, and from what i gather it is faster even though FPS are still the same cuase it has some fast forward feture set on, it would help if somone could :A make more roms have that on, and :B make it go much faster so it would be to fast to even play at upwards of 20 FPS. as only somthing to play around with and to shut up people saying its not fast enough yet, of course

If you follow what 84 said, and then use the 'Speed' rom(comes in a pack with like 15), the game i must admit plays very well, it does have its slow downs, but it could easily be improved to play full quality from the looks. I had about 16 - 22 FPS while fighitng Bomb-Omb which was reallly enjoyable.

Over the past few days, I have posted numerous times displaying my hatred of homebrew. However, after examining the site closer, all of us here at Sony have decided to replace the motherboards in our current PSPs and buy Undiluted Platinum chips. Thank you homebrew community for your continued support of the PSP.

So yeah... For real, good work Captain StrmnNrmn Man. I salute you.
