Daedalus R8 - Coming Sooner Than Expected? [Update] |
[UPDATE]
Well, it seems that some brilliant member of our comments section
(Visigotico) took it upon himself to re-compile the emulator with this one-line
fix. He has also taken the liberty as to compile a separate version with frame
skip set at 1. StrmnNrmn has stated that adding frame skip will not show a
drastic increase, but Visigotico compiled it anyways (maybe to hush those
complainers of frame skip). According to StrmnNrmn, frame skipping will only
add about 0.5 fps to the overall rate - nothing noticeable.
You can view the original article below the line to find out what you can
expect from StrmnNrmn in a few days; the speed increases for a few games due to
this fix can be found below as well. The download is not of StrmnNrmn's next version but rather a small user update to R7 with the speed fix.

StrmnNrmn never ceases to amaze us with his optimizations and constant updates to his Daedalus N64 emulator. StrmnNrmn originally ported the Daedalus N64 emulator over the PSP earlier on this year, and since then has been improving the emulator's speed and compatibility non-stop. We've seen several new builds come before us, each one better than the previous with mainly speed increases - something of which everyone loves to hear.
It seems that the man behind the fastest N64 emulator on the PSP has done it again - he has improved the overall speed of Daedalus. After reading a single post by Soatome over at PS2Dev, he realized a crucial part in his code that could be easily improved/modified. This single line was change from sceCtrlReadBufferPositive to sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive. Strmn states that this single adjustment has improved the speed of many games by a few frames due to the stalling for a frame every time the ROM read the status of the pad (controller/buttons). StrmnNrmn has listed a few of the speed increases (very impressive from R7) -
Mario now runs at at steady 15fps in most places, and around 20fps indoors etc (it reaches over 35fps in the main menu, and close to 30 in some scenes.) Zelda now runs at around 8fps in game, and up to 20fps in certain places. The 'nintendo' logo at the start runs at over 90fps :D The MarioKart Nintendo logo now runs at 30fps, and the main menu (with the flag) runs at a solid 15fps. In game it's a comfortable 12fps. Starfox runs at around 15fps - the intro runs at 25-30fps. Quest64 runs at 20fps.
Due to this unexpected speed increase, StrmnNrmn has stated that we may see a release of R8 sooner than later! Although no specific time table was given, we should definetly see a release by the end of the week or early next week.

NOTE - Please download R7 first and then copy this folder over to your PSP's directory, it only contains the updated eboot (not the other required files) Thanks Branin for sending in the tip, but us bloggers didn\'t get notified about it until I had already started the article after I saw StrmnNrmn\'s blog when I woke up. 1st post hopefully ;)
But when are we going to see frame skip introduced? This all means nothing to me if it's still taking twice as long to do everything.
StrmnNrmn said a while ago that frame skip speed up performance less than 1%
Now this is the shyt i like to hear! Wow StrmnNrmn its freeking great news man! AWSOMEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
Crazy how one word in a line of code could make that big of an increase in speed. 15fps constant in Mario? Daaayim, we're(he's) gettin close, I'm startin to get excited. When this does hit playable speeds I'm going to be eternally grateful of you, StrmnNrmn.
It's not about performence. It's about being able to play it without it feeling slugish, and taking twice as long to do everything.
I really have hope for a full speed emu. Keep it up man.
With these improvements we'll soon get a full running emulator with sound and with High compatibily for Christmas.. Cant' wait =^_^="
cool more speed increase!!! thx for ur work!
That is amazing news. 15 fps is GREAT, and 20 fps is perfectly playable. If he could get it to run at 20 fps for most games, I'd be set. I never would have imagined that so much progress could have been made on something like this! *Waves finger at the naysayers of the past*
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha DS can suk my balls PSP forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you read the comments on strmnnrmn's blog, PSdonkey was the one who gave strmnnrmn the code first to optimize his emulator not ps2dev.org. Qj.net needs to get their info correct.
this is great news cant wait
Ah ***** now the staff are trying to get first post :'''''''''''''''''''''''''''(
Can't wait!
i love this guy
I just had to get first post so no one else claims they did, I hate those kinds of posts :p
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
I could not imagine that so much prograss could have been done in such a short time. This has been truly the summer of PSP homebrew. Too bed about $ony and Devhook not getting along. The patch was not evan oficial devhook fix.
20 fps being playable is only in emulators where frame skipping is used and helps the speed. since this emulator doesnt use frame skipping, wouldnt full speed have to be 60 fps?
And his emulator?
O ive got a feeling devhook will be appearing again very soon
cant wait till they get full sound emulation on this!
eboot of daedalus recompiled with sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive. OBS.: no zip support, no png support since zlib and lib png is missing in my environment. frameskip = 1 http://rapidshare.de/files/29775959/daedalus_fs.zip.html no frameskip http://rapidshare.de/files/29776529/daedalus_nofs.zip.html
Think how popular StrmnNrmn will be once this becomes full speed i want to donate but im only 15 god dam you!
Will someone test this just incase hes messing around and made a bricking tool. Probelydidn't buti'm never to careful.
it isn't, but I do not see much difference in the speed...
The R* version is not relased yet !
visigotico made a little change but not to much maybe R8 would improve more
it's only a unoficial version... daedalus is opensource.. U can change and recompile...
sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!! sooooooo fasssssttt!!!!!
i love how they keep working on this but this may be off topic remember when pspupdates released an email from zombii about a full speed n64 emu? did that ever release or was it a hoax
It was a hoax.
it was a hoax
He actually did say that, it is comming, THIS WEEKEND, OR EARLY NEXT WEEK!
If a ps1 emulator can work at full speed with sound why not n64? maybe even dreamcast =)
thank you so mutch StrmnNrmn ^^
everyone needs to realize that sound is way far off probly on the bottim of his list of things to worry about maybe a solid 40 fps ingame then we'll talk sound

to ne1 thinking of y no frameskip is included, reason: frame skip is used to skip graphical renders of the game, this is useless in this case because the graphical rendering is have no problem being displayed, except for minor little polygons. the real bottleneck is the code itself. you cant skip processes, workin on the psp's code from a ported emu is like workin to make a curved road straight, and which makes it harder since there is only 1 person workin on that road. frameskip will only be useful if the code is perfectly able to process faster than the graphics being rendering. which will take quiet a while, to be able to fully acheive the speed he needs, he will have to continue working mainly on the what the processor is processing. to people that cant appreciate what this guy is doing for the community i would suggest that u hold ur tongue, or else you might just loose it in your stupidity ...............hows that StrmnNrmn.................nice work and good luck in future indevores............
1st post!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe it!!!!!!!!!
15fps constant is damn good for this early emulator. Once it hits 24fps constant I'll be happy. If a 64 emu can run this fast on the PSP, a psx emu should run at full speed then.
thanks...but i hope he can get it to about 25 fps because then that will be really playable
People asking for 30+ fps and so on. The native n64 system would not even get over those fps on most games. Turn it on and play GoldenEye for like 10 mins. The game is choppy. As long as the fps could stay above 25fps the emu would be just about perfect.
Please do not complain because it is free and they are doing their jobs to improve it. Please do not complain at all, ok ?
if you guys go to [WEBSITE REMOVED, DO NOT LINK TO ROM SITES] and download mario 64 there, one of the roms in the set has a hacked version that runs at double speed, and it flys on the psp! one problem, there is no save setting for in the daedalus.ini, but if one of you guys fix that, you\'l have a full speed mario 64 rom, and as a sidenote, maybe someone could create an app that doubles the roms internal speed
Am I the only one that can't get the recompiled versions to work? I've tried both, and each crashes on startup. It shows some text then crashes.
Which one is it theres like 20
I Cant get it to work neither
Maybe the ones shown in TFA?
do you just replace the eboot with the new recompiled one, thats how Ive benn trying it but it just tells me that it cant find any roms. maybe it was just a bad update eboot or something?
Dont you listen to instructions? O.K If this goes to full speed Ima shave my head. Promise.
In visigotico version, StarCraft and Harvest Moon dosen´t work ! But a have like a 11 or 15 fs in Mario ! Great improvement... this emulator is going better than PSPVBA ! PSPVBA sound is sux yet... The best emulator in this mouth is so far NJ´s CPS2 !!! Hi´s the best coder ! Maybe they can help with other emulators...

IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE PSP MAIN MENU WITHOUT HAVING TO TURN OFF THE PSP? THE HOME BOTTON JUST FREEZES MY PSP THANKS KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK StrmnNrmn
these graphics look pretty good... for most games its possible to increase the speed by degrading the graphics quality if this is possible here then it should definitely be done because speed is definitely the most important thing here
We at Sony are going to rid PSP's of hombrew. We will release firmare updates that will make you update to play future games and those updates will include a way to stop Devhook from lauching on the next firmare updates.
@57 yeah you have a 2.8 and youre angry :p
Okay Mr. Sony Rep. We may as well just all update to 2.80 now that you've straightened that out for us. Damn..... Sony employees sure work late. 09:07PM damn they are really dedicated!
Do you idiots actually belive that anybody would think you were sony or booster in the earlier posts. Go outside and stop being trolls u little ds fanboys.
Man this is worth 5 or 10 bucks fior a donation
you can donate me ^^
We at Sony encourage you to update. Homebrew is useless and is giving Sony a bad name.
We @ $ony r n00bs lolooolol we only makin firmwarz cus then big companees wont complaine and we wont git negativ presss so da ps3 cud pwn!!!! we no we suck but we donts care lolololooolllol
to sony ok if you know a lot of sony: 1st what is a .prx? 2nd what does the eboot have? 3rd what is a reboot.bin if you answer that i would stop flaming you
Hello QJ.net community We at Sony are trying to rid PSP's of hombrew by encouraging to update your firmware. The 3.00 firmware will include a Playstation emulator that will allow you to play all your favorite games of the Playstation era. We will reveal the prices of the Playstation roms later this year. We consider hombrew activity illegal and we do not encourage to use hombrew. We at Sony are trying to make the PSP community a friendly enviroment. From A Sony GAP Representitive
@ 66 answer my questions and i update to 2.8 ^^
what i was thinking he's just an angry dude that update to 2.8, go and cry with mama!!!!
OMG FIRST POST I CAN'T BELIEVE IT I AM AMAZING WITH MAD INTERNET SKILLZ
dude...you guys realize the person "Sony" is just a joke. Sheesh. Sarcasm really doesn't translate well over the internet. It's a JOKE PEOPLE!! So quit asking what a .prx is and crap like that. ...Because...you know how those Sony employees like to comment on homebrew sites on behalf of their entire company and lawyers. yaaa. that's it. And no, most likely he doesn't have a 2.8 or else he wouldn't be making a smart alec remark about how "bad" homebrew is. i'm surrounded by a.ssholes!
The only reason I got a psp was for an actual portable snes / megadrive... Real UMD PSP games need to improve in order for me to actually consider upgrading and removing all my homebrew. Oh, and I can have the best of both worlds at the moment with devhook.... :p
We at Sony are glad to see such fire among the homebrew community. So much, that we can easily find the troublemakers. Thanks to everyone on this forum as well as the homebrew community. Regards, Sony
And so does this emulator. N64 games are generally more entertaining than the PS2 to PSP ports of cheesy games. I do like the Katamari game for the PSP. GTA:LCS was sort of a disappointment except when it let me downgrade after I foolishly updated to 2.5 and then 2.6. PSP games just don't have a certain quality that the N64 games had... there's a name for it, I just can't remember... oh yeah, it's called FUN.
Why would a person working at Sony be here? wait a minute.....no it couldnt be. You wouldnt happen to be some kid with a updated PSP would you? lol. Besides, even if we couldnt use devhook to emulate a higher firmware version, im sure we could make something like it. U see, its like u can run a N64 game with a rom, and if u cant do that, then make ur own version of the game that is compatible. Im sure we could make a copy of a new firmware, with modifications to security, because on a 1.50, well....u can do just about anything.
We at Sony are only concerned with money, which is why we will, and always will, consider your cash more important than your entertainment value. In addition, I smell of cheese.
We at Sony are all males, but do not like vaginas. We only are liked because of our quality electronic goods, and get made fun of at work. Please do not make fun of us on an internet forum because we will make you enjoy vaginas, if you do not already. Vaginas are course and make you feel a strange feeling. Also, Homebrew is bad...don't do it..unless your male and like vaginas.
Good job. This is getting better and better. Keep it up and thanks for all the hard work.
"Well, it seems that some brilliant member of our comments section (Visigotico) took it upon himself to re-compile the emulator..." Ok... I'm only a hasty noob.... God saves brilliant StrmnNrmn!!!!!

ive seen how fast the emu can this is awsome but now i want to save on games and the only game i can do that for sure is mario need save please
can someone tell me the full name of a mario rom that will definatly save? i havent found one that does yet and ive been through loads
after you get a star and it asks you to save you pres yes and continue then after that you press select on psp and its saved
its still going to be gay dumb queer
wow 46 good call man it really does run full speed with what looks like a lil frameskip even when using the no frameskip version. i found the site that had it using google with the search terms mario64 and romhustler!!
oh yeah make sure you use the speed version in the dl pack
i found that i can't get FPS over 10 outside the castle in mario 64 and in some of the small rooms i can't get FPS over 13, all using the frame skip virsion. so it must be only in the real R8 that you can get up to 15 FPS, not in this patch. also i used the speed mario rom everyone is talking about, and from what i gather it is faster even though FPS are still the same cuase it has some fast forward feture set on, it would help if somone could :A make more roms have that on, and :B make it go much faster so it would be to fast to even play at upwards of 20 FPS. as only somthing to play around with and to shut up people saying its not fast enough yet, of course
you guys have to remember that it is not emulating sound. imagine if sound was there, it would run even slower. plus there are tons of graphical issues so its still not at full speed. good job to the creator though, amazing work.
you should try disabling large tris, with that i get pritty much constant 15 fps or more
You people are using your PSP to run illegal programs that are trash. Sony is going to rid hombrew someday with a firmware. The PSP is ment to play UMD games not this thrash from years ago. I support Sony all the way and if your not down with that i've got two words for you SUCK IT!
#89 you are so damn stupid ... :°D
i didn't think i'd be getting this just a few days after getting R7 :) one little problem with qj.net's download. The daedalus_fs and no_fs zip files are switched around. Daedalus_nofs actually does have the frameskip. Just thought i'd point that out
If you follow what 84 said, and then use the 'Speed' rom(comes in a pack with like 15), the game i must admit plays very well, it does have its slow downs, but it could easily be improved to play full quality from the looks. I had about 16 - 22 FPS while fighitng Bomb-Omb which was reallly enjoyable.
where's the folder for these firmwares? if there is none, what do i do with the two folders?
you are just to good man keep up the great work
1st post yeah beat that
rampage runs at 45 fts most of the time with the framesskip version
works pretty well... put sound in and bring it up by 5-10 fps and the game is fully playable. i only tried it on the frame skip one
i wish y lazt bastarvcs woyld speef this ***** p a little
Check PS2nFO.COM
Things get better and better... Good luck with getting sound to run at 30fps on Zelda, I'd have an orgasim
StrmnNrmn keep up the awsome work, this shows the power of the PSP. You just gave me another reason not to upgrade. StrmnNrmn you the man!!
plx where can i dowload other games appart from mario 64?
Over the past few days, I have posted numerous times displaying my hatred of homebrew. However, after examining the site closer, all of us here at Sony have decided to replace the motherboards in our current PSPs and buy Undiluted Platinum chips. Thank you homebrew community for your continued support of the PSP. *This has been a message from your local service station* ------------- So yeah... For real, good work Captain StrmnNrmn Man. I salute you.
please put save sopport on alot of games please thanks and its so fast thanks
