Daedalus Speed is Power!

Once you read this article, you will probably want to marry StrmnNrmn for being so great at what he does. However, let us try not to get too excited and feel like we have to resort to that to calm our "joys". StrmnNrmn has been very busy this week on the next version of Daedalus (v7), and this hard work paid off for him and even us!

While working diligently on Daedalus last weekend, he achieved both a speed increase and an increase in stability on 1.00 firmware. Now, a few percent increase in speed may not cover it for many of you at this point, but StrmnNrmn's blog entries just continued to pile onto us throughout the week. As of writing this article, the Daedalus v7 has experienced a 22-26% overall speed increase! Now, if that isn't making you jump up in and out of your computer chairs, I do not know what will. This is a great achievement for under a weeks worth, and this will finally be something to be truly proud of!

However, with great achievements, there have been great struggles. While attempting to improve his emulator by placing "things" in and taking things out, he seemed to hit something bad, very bad. This "something" caused Mario 64 to glitch up very early on (before entering the castle) and made the game impossible to play. However, StrmnNrmn is currently looking at a fix for this, and feels very confident that this will be solved!

to qj.net the speed increase is actually more than what you wrote its actually 25%-28% increase in speed because frist he had a 10%-12% increase then it was a 5%-6% and now its a 10%, add it up and you got a 25%-28% speed increase. great job strmnnrmn.

im pretty sure its going to make a big jump in fps. ok a normal n64 emu runs about 60fps, so 26% out of 60fps is like about between 15-20fps add this to the fps in r6 and you get most games to run from 20-30fps in r7.

# #22Lambda 2006-07-27 18:13
You sure that he doesnt mean that it provides a 22% speed boost to the already constant 6fps? It would make a lot more sense to add the speed increase to the established speed. (I.E. 6fps->8.25fps)

# For everyone correcting the math here...Exophase 2006-07-27 21:15
You guys ever heard of compounding interest?

If they're really percentage increases on top of each other (and they probably are, because it's not as if he tries all of these modifications separately on top of the last release) then you can't just add them together. Let's go by what he originally said for speed, 7-10%, the 10-12% report was on memory and probably an error when said for speed later. Let's go with the lower ends first, and say N is the original speed.

(N + (N * 0.07)) = N2 = 1.07N

(N2 + (N2 * 0.05)) = N3 = 1.05N2

(N3 + (N3 * 0.10)) = N4 = 1.10N3

So 1.10 * 1.05 * 1.07 = 1.23585

Upper limit is 1.10 * 1.06 * 1.10 = 1.2826

So the speed increase is 23.5% to 28.3%, if you just add them you get 0.10 + 0.05 + 0.07 = 22% to 0.10 + 0.06 + 0.10, 26%. That's the speed improvement on top of what it gets currently of course, it has nothing to do with the full speed of the ROM.

But of course these numbers are all very rough and I doubt they work for more than a few ROMs, and even then are probably dependant on what the game is doing....

# Damn QJ.net, don't get yourselves hyped up.Grannd 2006-07-27 22:00
OMG QJ, let's see the facts.

Approximately 25% speed increase?

So if a rom would run at 10FPS (and they mostly don't get that), it would be about 12-13. WHAT AN AMAZING SPEED INCREASE!!!

NOT

# Comments -Guest 2006-07-27 23:10
About the calculation of speed increase wrong - it isn't. Strmn relates back to the wrong type of speed increase in his 3rd blog entry down - he says there was a 10-12% increase in speed from the weekends, but if you look back, there was a 10-12% decrease in memory usage and a 7-10% increase in speed ;)

Don't worry, I do my math.

Also, to clarify this for several users - Although the percentages are rather high, they are very low ;) This speed increase brings about a max of 3fps speed increase over the previous versions

Ok, i have a 2.8 PSP, homebrew got boring for me... ANYWAY

you guys have to expect that it takes time for a fully running emulator, N64 isn't even perfect on the computers yet. With the PSP's low processing speed and RAM, there may be no chance of full speed, but don't give up hope, you can still prove me wrong. Great Work!

# screw all you idiots.Guest 2006-07-28 04:00
ok seriously all you bashing on this emulator should commit suicide to make this world a better place. even though a 28-32% increase is about 8.32 fps more or w.e it still takes a lot of hard work to accomplish that. its too bad the new bug is hanging the roms though (for all of you who keep asking why theres no r7 yet), the only question i have is why not release the source code for other devs to take a look at to find a solution to the problem??

Then just ignore these updates, until it says,

That way, you won´t be disapointed, and we don´t have to read comments like,

Think about it,

105: Mario 64 is supported

I actually notice a difference between 4 fps and 7 fps.

Also sometimes it gets messed up and says "Framerate 581.78" or something like that.

I sent ANOTHER tip to pspupdates, I'm not sure what they're doing. But I added some touch ups and more screens to the Mario Kart section. Special thanks to Mario Kart God, but as you know him here as MiddleManiac. I got to go to work Qj I hope you have an article here by the time I get off.

So what? This sort of information does not require such a "pop-out" title.

He works, he gets results, big *****ing woop.

I have been coming here ever since this netowrk of sites was created and just in the past half year or so you have gone so far downhill I think it impossible you could ever regain the popularity you had.

quit *****ing, seriously! maybe to anyone whos never coded before a speed increase such as this isnt that impressive, but in reality it is no easy feat, especially with the super-limited amount of ram the psp has to work with.

strmnnrmn you should put the option to frame skip and change the cpu speed, this should speed up the emulator alittle more. also is this emulator in user mode or kernel mode? keep up the good work.

And I bet you just have girls lining up to see you huh... You`re probably a typical skinny ass 15 yr old 120 pound loser who would have sex with Halo 2 if it was human. So shaddap.

Anyways, this is sounds awesome. Sure its not the best increase in fps, but really ANY increase is a good one. Keep up Str-w`e your name is lol. Sorry, I don`t want to mispell it :D

this is never gonna work , if it was going to work it would be working by now : n64 emulation is realy hard : the pc version is not quite there yet , so to all the people who think this is gonna let you play all the n64 games full speed , that is not going to happen , but well done for trying to get a 333 proc running an n64 emualtor full speed, and anybody who says the pc version works is just lying to themselves, this kinda thing happened with the zodiac scene(your too young to remember) with the zodiac they tried to get it running a ps1, i had toshinden running on it at about 2 fps it looked cool but its useless, we should be looking forward to the new 3d engines that have been offred to us , new games will be written by the talented coders who are wasting there time trying to do the impossible, this is not a neg post , i understand what the coder is trying to do (mostly ) but please use your talents for more productive aims : gba can be done , you knows it

I'm not a female you clown, Morgan isnt' a one gender name. It actually started as a male name but over the years has become both. My username is Captain Morgan, that sounds like a female to you? For example Captain Morgan the rum.

I'm not going to flame the developer since I don't know him personally. But the updates are just talk no substantle evidence or a least a video to show some of his progress. However I'll continue to play the n64 on my pc and laptop until a beta is released or a full release. But goodluck on your project.

You're an idiot and a sexist, I'm kinda thinking you're a mysoginist as well. Learn to spell before you insult him/her, idiots like you make the community bad. You sound like a guy who would rather jerk off to halo 2 than let a girl take you out of the house away from mommy.

to # 133

You are a complete idiot. Bigger than the mysoginist, one everyone should know this; You can't start a project and finish it in one day. Its impossible and cheap, even for profressionals with companies. On my pc the n64 works at full speed, you may have a crappy cheap pc that your parents bought you. A true coder must do it correctly no one wants a cheap easy emulator coded in one day and it only works with one rom. The rom being a very small .98kb file

That's right ladies and gentlemen. And you'll find plenty of it here. See above.

StrmnNrmn, I am hella HELLA excited for the next release. I already play Mario 64 a hell of a lot as it is, and I only get 6-10 frames the whole time. I've also found that I don't crash if I turn off dynarec. 20-25% increase in the space of a week is a HUGE quantum leap, congratulations and good luck with the final version! :D

lol, you must be the smartest man alive, i mean look at what you've accomplished...picking on innocent gamers with opinions that vary from yours, using "big" words like "mysoginist", haha. Chill dude, you're in a PSP forum. You're not God of the gamers. n00b.
