Daedalus, N64 Emulator for the PSP - Image 1

Tipster Swish alerted us on another update on StrmnNrmn's blog, and whew, it's all about Daedalus R13 being "significantly faster" and probably more efficient than R12.

First off, remember the last update about the Dynarec Engine optimizations that were conceptualized on the train? As it turns out, StrmnNrmn had already discussed it with fellow homebrew coder Exophase... months ago. Anyway, it's good that that the dev has finally put the optimizations in place and we'll be seeing the results once R13 sees a public release.

Anyway, the second StrmnNrmn update today is about an "interesting Dynarec hack". For the non-techie people out there, it's basically a hack that exploits code generation... in other words, the hack will make Daedalus R13 more efficient and thus, faster. StrmnNrmn removed a couple of lines on the code, the error handling lines which can be omitted in a perfect world. Since programming and coding is hardly a perfect or ideal setting for error-free operation, StrmnNrmn used a hack that will allow him to omit the error handling:

What I realised on Monday is that I can make an assumption that lets me remove the error handling code for certain types of load/stores. The assumption is that when the N64 accesses any memory through the stack pointer ($sp) register, the address is always going to be valid, physical memory.

The assumption relies on the fact that most roms don't do anything particularly clever with their stack pointers - it gets set up for each thread to point at a valid region of memory then the game just runs along, pushing and popping values from it as the code executes. Of course, if the assumption is wrong then the emulator will just crash and grind to a halt in a unpredictable manner :)

According to the dev, there has been a "10% speed up" and better stability. Nice, eh? StrmnNrmn is still testing the hack with different roms, though he indicated that he will definitely add the hack on Daedalus R13. It's all looking good as faster really sounds better.

Thanks again to Swish for the tip!

when is he gonna make paper mario and oge battles work? thsoe games dont need a whole lot of fps to be playable so why not work on their compability?
by - 2007-08-16 03:01:48
No wait, even better.

Doom64, PerfectDark, 007 and other such BIG HITTERS! We need to get big games that require tons for graphics. If you can successfully run a game like Perfect Dark, then everything else should run smoothly, in theory.

NEWS UPDATE

THIS JUST IN........... It appears that STRMNNRMN has manged to take a sh1t! QUICK QJ POST THIS TRIVIAL, UNINTERESTING, "NEWS" ON YOUR ADD-CRIPPLED "BLOG".......... oh wait....you already did
by - 2007-08-16 04:01:02
Nope

Such news take about 12 hours to turn out here ^^ No, serious. QJ needs to filter a bit better between interesting news and not so relevant blog updates :) While its good to hear that StrmnNrmn makes progress it is meeningless for this page. Atleast they did not include the complete blog entry. I am realy looking forward to a release!
by - 2007-08-16 04:47:00
why

im still confused why all you little bi.tch.es always cry about an update, is your computer so slow that these little pieces of text slow it down? i dont understand just scroll past it and ignore it, but you cant can you. You have to troll over and leave your comment that is more useless than the post itself. Just goes to show how ignorant people are. Wait heres an idea, fork out some cash and start your own site that doesnt have little updates, oh you cant, then shut your mouth TROLLS!
by - 2007-08-16 05:16:30
Sorry

You are right pro. I did take the Trollbait. This is a Blog page for PSP related news and more. this is PSP related. And QJ needs the news to draw viewers, to gernerate clicks to finacne this site wich often has good and interesting news :) QJ go on and grab every thing you can. its all of interest to someone.

crash and kill my psp?

"The assumption relies on the fact that most roms don't do anything particularly clever with their stack pointers - it gets set up for each thread to point at a valid region of memory then the game just runs along, pushing and popping values from it as the code executes. Of course, if the assumption is wrong then the emulator will just crash and grind to a halt in a unpredictable manner :) " wait so theres a chance that while i,m using R13 it can crash my psp really hard? or are u like fixing that. when u said if the assumption is wrong then the emulater will just crash. so will this be possibal to happen while i,m using R13 when its released? or are u fixing that?
by - 2007-08-16 07:12:58
...

ten percent? thats it? only a 3fps difference. who gives a sh*t.
by - 2007-08-16 07:19:49
R13

Hopefully this means Goldeneye!!!
by - 2007-08-16 07:31:08
It Doesn't Matter

If It Is Unable To Run On Eloader For 2.71,Just Like R10 Could.
by - 2007-08-16 07:40:58
Great news

However, when this is released I expect no games to be remotely playable. No games will be playable for a long time but he has done some really great work on this. As long as you are realistic about the improvements and speed increases of 1-3 fps then you won't be dissapointed. In a long time this emulator will most likely reach full speed though.
by - 2007-08-16 08:06:36
you're dumb.

downgrade. I'll rip your head off and sh*t down your neck.

People please!

For those of you who are asking for other games such as doom64, paper mario, perfect dark, ect., you will have to wait. Just cherish what he has already done then when he wants to he will try to fix those games. Thanks StrrmnNrmn For all the hard work and everything you have put into this emulator!

Please read this, you will be excited. When you click this link, http://xrl.us/ezymoney you will go to a website that will show you how to sign up for another website that pays you 2 - 45$ (PER) to do surveys, sign up for trial offers, and test products. Companies such as ebay pay CC to have people try their offers, and when you complete an offer, CC simply passes the money onto you. By spending an average of 3-4 hours a week on cascrate, I have made 472$ in May, 412$ in June, and 271$ (SO FAR) in July. You get paid in real checks from "KNGSIDE MEDIA" every month that you earn 10 dollars or more. It may seem too good to be true, but I assure you it IS true. Also, with their referral program, you can refer people by sending them your link (you get when you sign up) and for every buck they earn, you get 20 cents also! (Think how much money you can make if you have 100 people making five bucks a day) You do not have to enter your credit card or social security number. Nothing Harmful can come from CC. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 18 OR OLDER, I AM 15 YEARS OLD AND REFERRING PEOPLE, AND I MAKE THIS MUCH MONEY A MONTH JUST SPENDING A COUPLE MINUTES A DAY ON THE COMPUTER! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING THIS. Think it's a scam? Read this(from the website) "We assure you that this is not a scam! Companies need consumers to try and review products, services, and websites and are willing to pay money to have them do so. Most of the time you're asked to do this without any compensation, what we do is take the money companies give us for YOUR participation, and give you back up to 75% of it!" There are alot of websites like this, I have tried almost all of them and this really is the best, and legit one.In addition there is a new UK section opened with more then $200 worth of free offers! Not necessarily...

If, for example, he focused all his energy into making Perfect Dark run well, he might go around putting in all sorts of little tweaks and hacks based on assumptions about how Perfect Dark works, which would have significantly detrimental effects to any other game which doesn't do things quite the way Perfect Dark does. I'm glad he's still focusing on overall speed improvement instead of game-specific hacks. Besides, this 10%, coupled with the 10%-15% improvement mentioned in the previous update, already means that R13 should have about a %20-%25 speed improvement, and that definitely ain't shabby.
by - 2007-08-16 10:40:06

Great news! R13 is shaping up great! Go to Myspace.com/DaedalusCompatibility for a list of working games

This is great that the N64 is being updated, I only wish that MAME was being updated for the PSP. Others that run slow or sound is bad Amiga ATARI Lynx please someone take up baton and see if we can get more out of these others!

GPS attachment on play-asia

Spread the happiness. ON playasia, the psp's gps is finally on sale!! If you keep delaying, now would be a good time to buy it, with all the new homebrew including Deniska's 3d mode. http://www.play-asia.com/SOap- 23-83-7rqf-71-bh-49-en-15-gps- 84-j-70-1mij.html
by - 2007-08-16 12:10:20
hey

so its kind of cool. but its like earlier comments. its gonna be 2-4 fps faster.. so who really cares? no game wont be playable anyway. ill wait until he gets like 50-70 % more speed, then i will play the games :D
by - 2007-08-16 12:35:26
free games

freepspdownloads.co.nr free psp games. pass it on
by - 2007-08-16 12:49:46
mario

ill be more than satisfied, if mario 64 will run at full speed, with sound. even in r12, the sound caused too much slowdown. ever since i played mario 64 on PSP i've been obsessed with it. and so... we wait. ^_^
by - 2007-08-16 13:05:23
LOL

10% speed up, let's do the math! 5 fps + 10% speed up + 5.5 fps...
by - 2007-08-16 13:51:33
good but needs more work

for those that dont know, it said 10% speed increase. a game running at 10 fps will now get 11 fps. yay.
by - 2007-08-16 14:36:09
don't forget

the previous 15% speed increase 5.5 fps + 15% equals 6.325 fps :)
by - 2007-08-16 14:52:06
huh?

so nobody cares about playing resident evil 2!
by - 2007-08-16 15:29:59
kill.. not bloody likely

unless the emulator for some unknown reason should start accessing the flash, your psp won't die..
by - 2007-08-16 16:10:06
...

POKEMON SNAPP!!!!!!!!!!!
by - 2007-08-16 16:56:09
I agree

I hate it when they post an update to the progress of the N64 emulator now if it were every now and then when a big jump in progress happens, i'd be fine with that but every little thing opp post it and it's automatically bumped up to the top. N64 emulation on PSP is ass and isn't worth the space it takes up on the memory stick end of story.
by Sinncloud - 2007-08-16 17:14:12
\(^-^)/

keep up the good work Strmnnrmn, and dont pay atention to ignorants
by - 2007-08-16 17:15:08
correction

he reported a 15% improvement BEFORE this article so..... more like 12 fps
by - 2007-08-16 17:35:43
Bomberman 64

It doesn't even work in pj64
by - 2007-08-16 18:12:45
Again!!!

Can this emulator even play games? It's been updated thousands of times already. Give it a rest. Let it die! Work on another emulator please! Besides the N64 only has like 5 good games.
by - 2007-08-16 18:16:07
crash not brick

Worse case scenario is you will have to restart the psp
by - 2007-08-16 19:03:57
eh?

I shat on all of you- except strnmmmm
by - 2007-08-16 20:48:41
is it me

or does QJ ALWAYS say 15 increase of speed?
by - 2007-08-16 21:42:23
.

obviously you dont, or else you woudve figured out that it works by now
by - 2007-08-16 21:42:32
Don't stop, StrmnNrmn!

Just want to say, that any progress is significant, and interesting in emul world. QJ's doing fine this way. That will be very sad, if the guys from Daedalus team quit it. I belive it's possible to make it run ok. 2-3fps more every release, that's good! ) All that angry kids around there, just can't realize, that's StrmnNrmn got a better game than Mario 64, he got Daedalus-debuging game he likes more, I suppose! )))
by - 2007-08-16 22:00:33
pucha naman!!!

bakit kayo nagtya2ga jan dana ang bagal2 tapos ang laki ng memory na ginagamit!!! cant they make it 50 to 60 fps? you cant even play other games

by - 2007-08-17 03:06:27
...

Downgrade, then upgrade to a custom firmware, I'd recommend 3.52 M33-2 or 3.40 OE.

by - 2007-08-17 08:58:24
yeah!!! cant wait to see D13

and dont forgett WORMS Armagedon!!!!!
by - 2007-08-17 14:44:03
I'm surprised it even works at all on the psp

Seriously, even ultraHLE, the N64 emulator with the laxest system specs, required a 333 mhz processor, 64 MB ram , and 8 MB video ram. The psp has a 333 mhz CPU, but it only has 32 MB of RAM plus 4 MB of embedded ram. And that was the bare minimum; the recommended specs were a 600 mhz+ CPU, 256 MB ram and 32 MB video ram! Considering that daedalus is a full emulator (UltraHLE used high level emulation), I think StrrmnNrmn deserves a pat on the back for getting any commercial roms to run on the psp at all. Personally, I would love to see future versions of Daedalus start using HLE techniques to bring the framerates of the more popular titles up, but the dynarec method in the long run will make less popular titles like paper mario more likely to run.
