Daedalus R12: SSB progress! - Image 1

We're at the wake of N64 emulator for PSP">Daedalus R11's release and now we're already getting updates on StrmnNrmn's progress on R12! His Nintendo64 emulator for the PSP is getting quite an exposure under a PSPUpdates limelight, and we're sure most of you guys are curious as to how emulation development is going for him.

Especially if those updates concern some of the N64's best games ever, we can't just pass this up. Besides, to paraphrase what some of the comments say: "what's an N64 emulatorz if you can't run teh ultimatez nintendo sixty phoar gamez perfectly?" Pardon the l337 speak, but they do have a point. GoldenEye and Super Smash Bros. are what a lot of us have been waiting for (to run perfectly) on the PSP. StrmnNrmn updated his blog with three new posts, each one tackling a different thing.

Let's start with the good news: Progress on R12 and working on Super Smash Bros. He's already been able to fix four or five different pressure points which caused some considerable bugs in running SSB on the emulator. The screens above (R11 on the left, R12 on the right) show how the graphical textures vastly improved because of these tweaks. And yes, that's R12 you're seeing right before you! *gawks at screens*

Moving on, he's also posted updates on why GoldenEye and Mario 64 doesn't seem to work properly in the existing R11. The problem of GoldenEye seems to hinge on the fact that the game "executes code from virtual memory." That poses a problem on PSP emulation because it's slow and that "the rom (all 12 MiB for GoldenEye) must be permanently loaded into memory, and there just isn't enough memory left to do this anymore." His solutions (with the first one being the easiest, the third being the most stable):
  • Permenantly disable dynarec for Goldeneye, and reuse the dynarec buffers (6MiB) the expansion pak (unneeded anyway, 4MiB) and anything else I can scavenge, to fit the rom in a contiguous block in memory.
  • Investigate a way of getting the memory-mapping hack to work with rom caching.
  • Re-examine how I handle TLB miss exceptions for instruction fetches, and implement them correctly.
On to Mario 64 though, it's pretty simple. While some people have pointed out that he should fix Mario 64 on R11 (because apparently, it got busted due to some tiny change in its alpha threshold) and release some form of R11b, the HUD issue shouldn't be that significant. To quote his own words:

Mario is just as playable in R10. I'd rather release R12 a little early to fix this than mess around releasing an R11b version or whatnot. We'll see how things go with the SSB work.

Glad to see this guy taking development seriously. If he does intend to "release R12 a little early," then by god!, we're bound to be on his heels for it!

strongman norman

this is wierd, i mean ddlus 11 got released only a while ago... wierd... it's hard to believe R12 is super close... if he plans on releasing r12 for ssb better support, and mario 64 bugfixxes, screw 007... you could work on it through R13 ( don't think i'm not a 007 fan, 007 is my fav game of all time on n64) and on ocarina of time... my guess is that it uses that same constant memory thing that 007 uses, so what i'm saying is that we would want the fast changes, so it would shut up all the peeps around the internet whining for ssb...

Can't wait for his next release:D

Good work

Big ups to strmnmn on his constant dedication and development of this emulator. It sure has come a long way and I am excited to see how much it will improve.
by - 2007-05-09 21:07:02
Great Work but...

I Love strmnmn's work on Daedalus. I Tried R10 and everything seems to be going terrific but I think (if strmnmn continues his work) I will wait for R20-25 to see the games more playable and fluid in fps. While his work is great here's hoping he can get many games to get to near full speed with no bugs. Keep up the good work.
by - 2007-05-09 21:17:39
keep up the good work

cant wait for orcarina of time to be compatible

Yeah Right

I got to say, people are so *****ing ungrateful it's not even funny....What's the point of coming on a board like this and just bash the author of some brilliant software for *****s and giggles?? I mean, this guy hasto wade through tons of your ***** for some actual usefull comments on what the next release of Daedalus should contain, he works on it to get it out as quickly as possible, and then theres people who don't even bother thanking him for his work.... I just think it's ungrateful bull*****... Thanks very much for your efforts, Strmnnrmn, It's lookin great... (and if anyone tries to call me strmnnrmn's gay lover or something, then you just prove my point exactly...)

Re: First Post

Long time ago a rabbit went inside a worm hole to find a chicken, but found a poisonous rooster instead and got squashed by an elephant. Before he died he said "1st POST" finishing with half a victory dance. Now YOU must make his legacy live up and copy paste this whole message and after doing so write without copy pasting: "1st post 1st post 1st post!" If you do this 10 times the unlucky rabbit will go to Heaven instead of Hell and will leave you an egg full of candy in easter and make your wildest dreams come true on christmas. If you don't then the rooster will visit you while you're masturbating in your parent's room and transmit you Herpes to your *****.

Sound Improvement?

Just wondering if there will be an improvement on the audio for M64 - it's all I'm playing right now. Never mention speen increases because they're always welcome.
by - 2007-05-10 11:00:01
Good to see updates, but this will never live up to expectations..

Mainly because the PSP isn't powerful enough and secondly because it's based on the DAEDLUS PC N64 emulator... which truthfully isn't the best. If someone were to make one based on Project64 there might be better support for games other than Mario64, but the power of the PSP is still an issue. I'd love to see a perfectly playable (with sound of course) N64 emulator on the PSP, but I've given up hope. I think the GBA emulator is about as high as we are going to see on the current generation PSP as far as homebrew goes. The author should take note of NJ's caching techniques. The 12MB GoldenEye is nothing compared to the 83MB Metal Slug 3 which runs perfectly on the NEO-GEO MVS emulator. I'm not going to pretend I know how to program any of this myself and I do respect any work these guys put into emulation. I just feel people are expecting far more than is possible. -S p o o N M a n

my favorite N64 game

i'd love to see tetrisphere working on this emulator... i imagine thatd be pretty harrd as it's so graphic intensive.
by - 2007-05-10 14:38:41
re:first

your a *****. p.s. i would personally class zelda as the best game on the 64 apart from mario

Huzzah! I think a lot of small releases every 2-3 weeks is the $hit!!!! It keeps porject interest/support, and it gives me some good news...

@ ...

Yeah, if he gets the dynarec engine working with that game it'll really haul!
by - 2007-05-10 15:11:08
ssb and goldeneye are all good and well...

But I am really looking forward to Pokemon Snap in one of the next couple of updates. (And I also agree with korkor. Kirby 64 was the coolest Kirby ever.) Say what you want, I spent more time playing Pokemon Snap than just about any other game I've ever played.
by - 2007-05-10 15:15:38
Well,

Sony managed to make a pretty damn good PSX emulator, so I'm confident that this can work well with enough optimizations. Look how StrmnNrmn is always coming up with speed and bug fixes. Be patient, and eventually you'll look at the emulator and won't believe how far it's come. Just remember Daedalus R1, this emulator's speed has improved nearly tenfold since then.
by - 2007-05-10 15:31:32
Nice

Nice work so far, i wanted to play ssb frm a long time on the psp, finally ur gonna make it happn THANKZ ND GOOD LUCK
by - 2007-05-10 16:31:29
banjo kazooie

banjo kazooie plays really well, almost as good as mario using frameskip 1 and no sound. but pause game screen is really badly garbled but it pops back into the game when un-paused. one of my favourite games this one. if only this sound prob could be sorted. Also the writing is perfect, i remember when the surreal emu for xbox was being worked on they had trouble with all the characters dialogue writing being garbled ,seems perfect on this. many thanks again strmmmm, keep it up!

nice

sounds great also go to Myspace.com/DaedalusCompatiblity for a game compatibility list
by - 2007-05-10 20:51:32
it will happen, just wait

well i honestly believe that in time well have a pretty good n64 emulator...StrmnNrmn seems to be very dedicated on this project and he's been making excellent progress...I believe in about 6-10 more updates is wat it will take to c a good N64 emulator...something i would love to c in this emulator is wifi/co-op play but that i do believe will come much later if even possible....but then again u never know...also when u say the power of the psp isn't strong enough that really isn't the issue the psp is more than capable (well u would know if u were a progamer) but alot of areas have to be tweaked a bit here and there and he's going to have to do alot of trial and error...but he can do it well thanx again StrmnNrmn keep up the great work ;-) PS:"if you put a limit on an idea than that limit is as far as you'll ever get"-Robert Denningham

..............................................................................

So much spamming... I personally have only used Daedalus a few times (R8, R9, R10) and I have an NDS with Super Mario 64 and got all 150 stars years ago. Can't wait for compatibility of SSB!
by - 2007-05-19 12:04:17
kool

awesome, the SSB screen update looks nice! good to know that there are GPU updates and that SOMEBODY around the homebrew scene works on their emus. Other than passing the ditching the project 4 someone else, because your awesome for not quitting so soon! (leaving it early beta) keep it up, maybe one day, the saves would be a-bit more reliable and games running at 20-25 fps one day! im sure this may be achievable later on! sincerely -Steven b

I think he should try to get Paper Mario to work
