Hits stats - Image 1

These are actual stats - about half the PSPs on PSN are equipped with CFW. That's a lot of hits, but questions were raised regarding the ethical issues of how these stats were obtained. Users Wololo and Justice in Sceners thinks it's wrong that people have their personal info accessed when they log into the Store.

While many believe that Dark AleX has the right to do whatever he wants with his work, Alek maintains that no such intrusion takes place. "On this information, just the IP connection is logged, and from time to time it's removed from our hands," he wrote. "No more information is on the server, neither MAC, or anything else you were thinking."

One thing's for sure, Dark AleX and the rest of the crew is doing a stand-up job, and the stats agree. Exact figures and more info on the forum can be found via the source link.

how do you determine firmware by ip address?

# You Don't...Daistaar 2008-11-10 12:53
You don't... Remember that PSN is Sony's network and service and requires activation of the system, i.e. the PSP to work on it. It checks and logs your FW version, lets you know if it needs updating, and so forth.

Alek on the other hand said, (and I'm paraphrasing) "Unlike Sony, We DO NOT log your info. We're mindful and cooler, HA." or something to that effect. While on M33 CFW you can use network update which also scans your FW revision and pertinent info for upgrading purposes. IPs are logged on Dark-Alex's site as port of pinging requests for updates which is normal.

I wonder if Dark Alex will stop claiming only a significant minority of PSP users use CFW now.

Where does it say that half of the PSPs that connect to the PSN have custom firmware ????

It only says that everyday ~20 000 CFW PSPs send ~40 000 hits to the PSN website.

This only means that ~20 000 PSPs connected to PSN with a CFW, and that on average these PSPs connected twice a day.

There is NO information on the OFW PSPs in this graph !!!

If you think there's only 40 000 PSPs in the world connecting to PSN, you're really wrong...

# Yeah, it's a complete misinterpretati onDaz_Genetic 2008-11-10 15:51
The source only has access to data coming from PSPs with custom firmwares. It shows 40,000 hits coming from 20,000 PSPs using CFW. They get this data from the check the PSP makes with Dark Alex's server when connecting to the PSN.

This check does not occur on official PSPs, so there is zero information regarding official firmwared PSPs, but considering the amount of them out there, I would be surprised if the number were less than a million hits per day globally.

This site is full of inaccurate articles though, so this one fits right in.

that really show how low some of the staff at qj.net are nowadays.

It's too bad that misinformation like this wont be corrected, or at least removed. Still, I guess if they would prefer to start a crusade against the homebrew community they may as well see how long people will take it before moving on to other forums and websites.

How the heck did they determine the number of PSN users who have Official Firmware, in order to claim that half the total users have CFW???!????

CFW does not mean piracy either and I'm sick of the stigma that comes attached to it. I've bought all my games, even the PS1 games that I've ripped to PSP (since they're not on the store yet) but it's still not piracy. Just that DaX has some really brilliant ideas that Sony need to impliment themselves - switching of CPU speeds, more dynamic themes, Cave Story (heh), rip own PS1 games.

I mean they already let the PS3 play PS1 games, why not, since the PS1 store downloads are still slim pickings, let players rip their own games on the PS3 itself?

Either that or get cracking on flooding the store with more classics. £3.50 for a game from one of the best systems of all time? I'd spend my wages there alone.

I totally agree. I also rip my own ps1 games and purchase PSP Games. On the other hand, its all a money game for companies... Even the simple stuff, like an alarm clock, is missing...

Homebrew rules:)

# PS1 games on PSPPimpFriedRice 2008-11-11 08:58
Sony should have created their own PSX convertion tool to work on their own official firmware from the beginning, but since pops changes with almost every update, I see where that would pose a problem. Sometimes pops increases in size and other times it decreases, but PS1 downloads from the PS Store vary by region. Sony should make every game downloadable game available in evey region. There's a few games on the Japanese PS Store that I got because I went through the trouble of creating a Japanese PSN account along with obtaining Japanese PSN gift cards. If only the PSP potential was realized sooner and marketed much more aggressively. Thank God for DAX covering up the never ending stink bombs that Sony let off with the PSP.
