Yoshihiro working on PSP app for playing new games on old firmware

Without a new custom firmware, those unwilling to upgrade to higher versions of the official PSP firmware are pretty much locked out of playing a lot of the new PSP games. Homebrew coder Yoshihiro may have a solution, however.

QJ.NET reader Jonny P has pointed us towards an app called Game Decrypter. According to the translated description, this app will let you play new games on older firmware. Apparently Yoshihiro was able to successfully play MotorStorm: Arctic Edge on 5.03GEN (PSP-3000 and PSP-2000 v3) and 5.50GEN (PSP-2000 and PSP-1000).

MotorStorm: Arctic Edge - Image 1

The app is still a work in progress, but PSPGen reports that it should become available tonight. You can find out more about it at the source link.

Thanks to Jonny P for the tip!

:O

I hope this works towards UMDs! Can't wait to hear more about this project!
by jkoz - 2009-09-29 15:04:22
About time.

Looking forward to this project greatly. Bought Persona, but have been unable to play it. And it's not practical for me to upgrade to OFW then Pandora back to CFW every time I want to play the one UMD that I can't play. Thank you, look forward to seeing this tonight.
by Creature - 2009-09-29 15:10:02
YES!!!

WOOT
by LeXiO - 2009-09-29 15:10:51
wth?

Wth are you talking about. It is practical, and don't talk as if you have an actual UMD copy. Seriously, people these days. Even if you did have a copy, it's practical to upgrade and downgrade to play a game. Who says it isn't. People talk about how they buy games that aren't playable on CFW, please. It's that they have an image file that isn't playable on CFW. If you really had the UMD, you would upgrade. Idiots.
by TetraFlare - 2009-09-29 15:15:07
@LeXiO

No, he wouldn't, especially if he has an "unhackeable" PSP using Hen+CFE.

the end of the Dark Alex saga

I don't really remember names here, is Lexio a mad person or something? I almost bought Arctic Edge the other week (£19 at Gamestation) but I'm not prepared to go through the rigmarole of updating my PSP just to play 1 game. My PSP is primarily an emulation system, UMD's second. So no - I wouldn't upgrade.
by RJ - 2009-09-29 15:21:47
-

So is this only for the Gen systems? I'm not leaving M33 so if it's not - well I guess Sony isn't getting my money for these games and I'll continue with my existing library of games. Until a hacker comes along and rips the protection right out of them, I guess. Or until DA returns.
by symbal - 2009-09-29 15:35:38
Yes

This dude is my hero... first a NDS emulator now this.
by LeXiO - 2009-09-29 15:49:50
the issue

It doesn't matter if you have an unhackable one or not, it's simply a matter of you wanting to play the game you SUPPOSEDLY bought or not. Seriously, we all know new games, luckily, require 5.55 OFW, so if you really wanted to play it, and SUPPOSEDLY bought it in the first place, knowing or not knowing whether it'll work on previous FW versions, you would of updated. It's not a case about making the PSP unhackable and whatnot, it's that he most likely didn't buy the game in the first place, and just wants to pirate like so many other people. If you did buy it, we'd know, it's the act of pretending you bought it, that makes you look like you didn't.
by Mr.Grim - 2009-09-29 15:53:38
i buy my games

just because i have a cfw doesn't mean i dont buy the game i bought persona but cant play it because i have a 3000 using a cfw but i also have a 2000 so i just updated that one to play i prefer an iso or cso but still buy
by squintin - 2009-09-29 16:02:04
OMFG... legendary!

I don't give a ***** about the new PSP games, I'm having tons-o-fun with my sexbox 360, but when this comes out I'd totally give the good ones a try, so that means I won't be playing, Soul Calibur, MotorStorm, and least of all G.I. Joe.
by _YOUR_MOM_ - 2009-09-29 16:03:08
sooo

does this mean we need to have the UMD to play or does ISO's work as well?
by squintin - 2009-09-29 16:05:31
Umm...

On my PSP 3000 5.03, Chickhen R2 -5.03 MHU... I have a hybrid of 5.00 m33 CFWE and 5.03 Gen-A installed
by lavino - 2009-09-29 16:14:21
darn.... "and 5.50GEN (PSP-2000 and PSP-1000)."

I still only have the 5.00 cfw in my PSP-1000 =(
by Knutselmaaster - 2009-09-29 16:25:08
UMD + ISO

I checked on pspgen, where yoshihiro is residing and they talk about that you need the UMD, and make an ISO from it. So it works with an ISO.... I'm not sure they talk about having the UMD for legal reasons (as just having the ISO is illegal ofcourse) or that you really need the two...
by _YOUR_MOM_ - 2009-09-29 16:29:41
lets hope

well lets hope that UMD is not really needed since there are still lots of players that can't afford or import UMDs. If not lets hope this helps push 5.55Gen or 6,00Gen
by m3rox - 2009-09-29 16:32:13
.

Honestly, why not just have a phat for CFW, and if you want to play the newer games, get another fat and use OFW? If you're someone who likes to have a hard copy, but still want to be able to use emulators or play backups of the older games, it makes more sense than waiting for a new CFW to come out.
by symbal - 2009-09-29 16:38:55
Ermm

You really think getting 2 Psp's make more sense than waiting for CFW? Maybe in the world of millionaires and crazy people but back on sano world we only want 1.
by Andre3000 - 2009-09-29 16:50:12
Can it play with M33 firmware??

I still dont trust anything GEN.
by DevilGun - 2009-09-29 17:05:41
I think...

...its working like this: As some of you know, the boot.bin was normaly decrypted, as the eboot.bin was encrypted. The article says, you need UMDGen, so the program will most likely decrypt the eboot.bin, so that it can be used as boot file (this trick was used on soul calibur - using boot.bin as starting file) - because most games dont have an encrypted boot.bin, just a dummy file. So I think it should work on old CFW too! Its Gen/M33 independent
by BloodMachine - 2009-09-29 17:11:07
:O

Come ONNNNN Gran Turismo!
by kamanashi - 2009-09-29 17:11:50
LeXiO, are you retarded?

So, according to you, people that want to stay at a CFW are all pirates? I upgraded to 6.00 OFW and run 5.00M33 off my Mem Stick, does that mean I'm a pirate? No, it means I want to have homebrew and play games I bought from a store.
by deadlyangel91792 - 2009-09-29 17:18:20
....

someone please tell yoshihiro that i love him NOW!!!! anyway you guys said tonight right???? what timezone?
by jonnyp_777 - 2009-09-29 17:23:25
Yay!!!

QJ posted my tip! Haha. Can't wait by the way. Don't really feel like running M33 from the memory stick anymore to have both OFW and CFW. Thank you Yoshihiro!
by Cyber-X- - 2009-09-29 17:24:28

symbal, are you ****ing serious? You can get a used phat for like $60 or less.
by kupomogli - 2009-09-29 17:32:15
@Lexio

Actually, it's not worth it. I own Dissidia on UMD but I refuse to upgrade to GEN because the PSN purchases are messed up and it thinks that the same games aren't tied to that system. If I want to play Dissidia(in English) or Tales of VS(which won't play on anything under 5.55) I'll have to upgrade to official. Then take the time to redowngrade the system. I have a second PSP, but I'm selling it. Don't want to take the time to redowngrade it.
by NathanDrake - 2009-09-29 17:36:49
LeXiO you're an idiot.

I have the legal UMD of Motorstorm Arctic Edge but I can't play it. You say I should upgrade to the real current firmware? I'll lose my emulators which I play a lot. And I do not have time in my life to be constantly upgrading/downgrading firmware all the damn time.
by NathanDrake - 2009-09-29 17:38:51
...

I'm not carrying two PSP's around with me. What a dumb comment.
by Techni - 2009-09-29 17:39:07
I agree

Only M33 for me
by RSX46 - 2009-09-29 17:49:35
Nice!

Sweet! Keep up the good work guys!
by symbal - 2009-09-29 17:53:26
Seriously dude

It's all about practicality here, people don't want to carry around 2 consoles even if you did consider money in it, it's just common sense really i mean if i could get 1 device to replace all my portable devices i would be very happy and so would most of us.
by zzk2001 - 2009-09-29 18:07:57
@kupomogli

Ummm Dissidia EUR version works on 5.00m33-6 I have played it many times now, it's the same as the USA version (aka in English)
by _YOUR_MOM_ - 2009-09-29 18:18:18
waiting is hard

I can't wait to play tales of VS and Tag force 4 if its still runs as iso.
by FreePlay - 2009-09-29 18:23:41
Whine, whine, whine.

1. Set up your MS with DCv8. 2. Install 6.00. 3. Boot to CFW from the MS to use homebrew. You really don't have an excuse not to do this. You only need to flash *once*.
by AMD889 - 2009-09-29 18:24:36
cant wait till tonight

yay i hope i can finally play gran turismo tonight.
by FreePlay - 2009-09-29 18:24:59
...

UPGRADE.
by FreePlay - 2009-09-29 18:26:31
... No.

It's not just EBOOT.BIN. It requires the NID exports of the new firmwares. You would need a FW dump.
by DevilGun - 2009-09-29 18:35:02
erm

but an encrypted eboot.bin (on older umds the boot.bin) can be loaded without firmwarecheck O.o
by 73N5H1 - 2009-09-29 18:37:19
I swear people are *****ing stupid

for all practical purposes, when you have cusom firmware, your PSP reads an ISO that same way it would read a UMD... its pulling the same program, just in a different medium
by ErickRoman - 2009-09-29 18:42:07
You don't make sense

You won't be using the UMD if you plan to use this process, because he used UMD Gen to do it, and UMD Gen opens ISOs and CSOs
by Acteon - 2009-09-29 18:42:35
Cool

Hopefully I can play Disgaea 2 now - I picked up the US version with teh free Laharl Prinny but held off updating (since I'm still playing Disgaea 1) and hopefully now I won't have to. Major props to this guy.

google pspgen.com, then click translate this page. it's the first article on the page. you have to register to download though. QJ, put the decrypter up on your site.
by symbal - 2009-09-29 18:58:33
GEN or M33

It only works for games needing 5.55 ofw so looks like won't work for Gran Turismo etc. and says it only works on GEN fw's, but if it gets the games working i guess i can give up M33 to try, but massive respect to Yoshihiro for this.
by colin776775 - 2009-09-29 19:06:43
does it work for iso's?

CFWE to GEN-A

To go from CFWE to GEN-A do I have to uninstall CFWE or can I just power off, load up HEN and flash GEN-A firmware on my psp?
by Foolmonkey - 2009-09-29 19:31:25
...

You don't get it. The eboot.bin has been UPDATED with a new encryption that older firmwares cannot read. It has nothing to do with firmware checks.
by haydensc - 2009-09-29 19:56:34
Link please

i try to make acc. on pspgen and it won't let me. can some one upload it and put a link

Sorry Dax,

but goodbye M33, hello GEN with 5.55 and 6.00 games.
by LeXiO - 2009-09-29 20:05:48
I dare you....

So, if I'm getting this right, you're all admiting that you pirate. Ahh...never would of guessed..not. Don't try to act as if you're using CFW for this and that. We all know what CFW leads to. Heck, talking about emulation. If you didn't notice, emulating snes/gba/etc... and playing roms, is the same thing as using the PSP to play isos. Don't talk as if they're different. Another note, don't give me no "I don't have the time to" junk. Seriously, if you have the time to write back at me, you obviously have MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME, to upgrade/downgrade. There is no other issue there. You're just trying to justify your means. CFW isn't illegal, but you can't say there isn't a connectiion between the two. You're the idiots, I don't have to say who, you know who you are....idiots.
by LeXiO - 2009-09-29 20:08:00
not necessarily

If you have the actual UMD, and rip it into ISO format, it's not really illegal. It's the distribution of it, and not owning an actual copy that will count more towards it being illegal.
by anykill - 2009-09-29 20:10:56
Tested

Motorstorm works fine, GT dont work! :S Slim 2001 - 5.50 GenB
by mikal_rokz - 2009-09-29 20:14:56
uhh yea GT does work

did you rebuild it as iso or cso? I did ISO and it worked fine. Duno bout cso though but Foolmonkey says cso works. Are you on 5.50 GEN B2?

@LeXiO

Uhh, I never said I pirated anything. I don't see a reason to pirate games since UMDs are more reliable than ISOs in my opinion. So, you might as well leave and stop being an ass hat. Just because 1 pirates, doesn't mean all. More than likely, you are just a pissed off 14 year old because you couldn't mod your PSP.

by mikal_rokz - 2009-09-29 20:45:02
haha ok. Um you could also try doing it yourself.

Just get the iso/cso of your game and open it in UMDGen. Then locate the EBOOT.BIN which is located at PSP_GAME\SYSDIR\EBOOT.BIN. Then right click on it and click EXTRACT SELECTED. Then choose your desktop and click OK. The copy the eboot.bin to the root of your memory stick and make sure the decrypter is in the PSP\GAME folder. Then go onto your PSP and run the decrypter. It will create a new folder on your memory stick called DECRYPTER. Inside this new folder is a NEW eboot.bin. Go back to UMDGen and DELETE the EBOOT.BIN. Then right click the empty space and select ADD then EXISTING FILES. Locate the new eboot.bin that you created and click open. Then click SAVE up the top and select ISO.
by camargo2012 - 2009-09-29 20:50:03

and its getting wilder

coz nowadays its also legal to have just the image of a game and not have the physical medium ex the UMD. the line has been erased, ever since they sold eboots, knowing legal and illegal has been changed, its not all about physical anymore. it all comes down to few questions... did you really buy it from psn or game retail if its from retail you should have a UMD or receipt? or... did you download it for free on illegal sharing sites? there are free and paid illegal sharing sites, but it doesnt matter coz their both illegal.
by xche78x - 2009-09-30 02:58:02
only pirates will say such

i am a pirate myself, but your comment is both pitiful and dumb. and no it will not require UMD to play. and it will also effectively slowdown the development of such custom firmwares because this patcher will make most games even new ones RUN/PLAY on older custom firmwares such as GEN-B-2 thus diminishing/lessening the need for newer custom firmwares.
by xche78x - 2009-09-30 03:08:15
PSP GO

ahahahahahahaha
by xche78x - 2009-09-30 03:14:46
some games will run

but that will be lots of trial and error for assurance have a friend near, a friend that has GEN-B-2, test the decrypted game on their psp, if it runs then copy it to your m33, run it with all the iso drivers available, if none make it work then sorry. try another game and good luck with it. hope someone makes a list of which psp games runs on which firmwares.

you have a 1000 model? upgrade and use DC8 jeez how hard is it for you idiots to understand. you are not reflashing everytime you want to play brew. it's loading 5.00m33 from the memstick, if you have the XGEN DC modifier you can boot into 5.50GEN-B OFF THE MEMSTICK. 6.00 on NAND, 5.50GEN on stick using test option. it really shouldnt be that difficult to understand yet still get people "i shouldnt have to reflash to play my emulators", and thats true, you shouldnt have to and you dont have to.
