Reboot, reboot, reboot...

Over at our QJ forums, MaTiAz has just posted a simple and yet very powerful plug-in for the PRX developers. The VSH Rebooter PRX v0.1, as the name implies, allows you to reboot the PSP through the XMB by replacing the Network Update function.

Here's how to install the plugin:
  1. Flash update_plugin.prx to flash0:/vsh/nodule/ overwriting the original update_plugin.prx
  2. If you want, you can also hex edit your topmenu_plugin.rco (flash0:/vsh/resource) to replace Network Update text with something sexier, like "Rebootz mah PSP"
Note that this wouldn't work in FW 1.5 since anything prior to FW 2.0 doesn't support the reboot function. MaTiAz also suggests that you should back-up your original update_plugin.prx so you can revert back to your previous setting in the future. If there are any doubts about calling this a Sony "hack", don't bother. Although his plugin is also called "update_plugin.prx", there isn't any copyrighted Sony code in it.

Frankie27 from the forums was even kind enough to upload a video of the plugin in action. Check it out below:

I don't think it'll work on 3.0x OE, since that firmware requires modules like update_plugin.prx to be sigchecked. In other words, the modules themselves are *unique per PSP* and can't be loaded unencrypted, so far as I know.

I don't really see the point of this. Why would you want to reboot your PSP from the main menu?

I guess if you want to save 4 secs of holding up the power button.

LMFAO!! I just loaded this onto my 3.03 OE-B PSP!! It works... like awesome!

Naw im just kidding. But it's REALLY FUNNY!

Keeps on restarting! Well... lol hope a 3.03 OE-B version comes out. lol... man...

Make up your minds, kids. One of you says it works; the other says it doesn't.

I'd be shocked if it did, since update_plugin.prx is sigchecked in 2.80 and up.

# wheeGuest 2007-01-14 19:17
Well, I'm running this on 3.03OE-B, so I can confirm it works. And KillerHurdz: I coded this solely for testing VSH plugins, because it's really annoying to turn off the PSP and turn it on again instead of just simply rebooting :P

# asvbcGuest 2007-01-14 19:21
There also a reboot/shut down plugin by holding down home and pushing start/select...but this is a nice way of adding something in relplace

# copy to flash0Guest 2007-01-14 19:22
first put the update_plugin.rco in the root of the memory stick and then in psp filer press left trigger, left, and right trigger to ativate hacker mode. then press square on the update_plugin in the root and press copy to ramdisk or whatever it says and then press start and keep pressing start till you get to the folders that have the folder vsh then when you get to the flash0:/vsh/nodule/ press x and then paste file from ramdisk

Yes the hex editing is kind of a pain in the ass.

start at offset 00004B00 and highlight all the way to 00004B27 and replace it with this:

....R.e.b.o.o.t. .P.S.P.............G.a.

Make sure you replace the old line and not insert a new line

Is there any way we could use this under the LocationFree icon instead? I like to always get the latest firmware update by going to network update, plus the network icon is just too easy to accidently click, and I know I wouldn't accidentally click it if it was all the way at LocationFree.

# dPSPZorZ 2007-01-15 05:16
They can't post the topmenu's here because it's modified sony's code so it's illegal... The only way you'll get it is if you find a website that doesn't care about linking to illegal files or if they upload the 6 .BMP files and you make them into a topmenu yourself

It may be pointless to you, but it's really handy for people who actually DEVELOP VSH plugins, so they don't need to mess around with the power switch all the time.
