Use your PSP as Portable Phone!

PSP IP Relay

Brian Donaldson has enlightened us about a great way to use your PSP as a portable phone! Obviously, you cannot actually speak using your PSP, but through a freely-available service called IP Relay, messages you type on your PSP and PC can be transferred to any phone number within the US.

The service can be accessed through the IP Relay website using Java, and the service will act as an operator, translating voice into text for you and text into voice for the person on the receiving end of the phone call. Of course - the PSP web browser doesn't support Java, so why would it benefit PSP users? That's where homebrew comes in. Danzel's amazing AFKIM (Away from Keyboard Instant Messenger) for the PSP is an AIM client for the PSP, allowing you to connect to America's favourite Instant messenger through your PSP and a WiFi hotspot. IP Relay can be used within AIM, and by following these steps devised by Brian Donaldson, you could be making calls via your PSP for free!

1. You won't actually be speaking to the person you call, you'll be typing what you want the operator on My IP Relay to say to your friend...and believe me they will say anything because the service has been thoroughly tested by Brian!

2. Once you have added My IP Relay to you AIM buddy list on your PC you must now turn on your PSP and go to Game > Memory Stick > AFKIM

3. Now boot up AFKIM and press X so you can connect to your WiFi hotspot (Note: you can only call people from your PSP if you have access to the Internet).

4. Once you are connected to AFKIM you must now setup your account by pressing select and going to AIM. Type in your AIM username and password and then sign on.

5. Once you are signed into AIM on AFKIM scroll down to the screen name My IP Relay.

6. Press on their name and then type in CALL XXX-XXX-XXXX (XXX-XXX-XXXX is the area code and phone number of the number you want to call).

8. Then My IP Relay will type back with a response saying Ring 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc...you get the point. If someone picks up My Ip Relay will type back with the response that the person has said, such as, "y0, hello, hi, hola, etc." Simply use the AFKIM keyboard to type back and tell the person something (Note: You should be highly skilled at using the afkim keyboard before using this service because it'll be pointless if you type to slow. They may hang up if you're too slow).

9. Viola, you'll be having a conversation with your friend from your PSP. They'll be on their phone and you'll be on your PSP. So you'll be text messaging them from your PSP and they will hear a voice telling them the words you're typing. It's pretty cool, I don't really use it that much to talk to my friends because the PSP currently does not have a compatible keyboard. Even more cause for one to be made!

I'm just amazed at how IP Relay works. It's a completely free service with no advertising, all we can hope for now is that it eventually gets rolled out all over the world. This is an amazing tip, and all of the credit goes to Brian Donaldson for the instructions and the idea, with credit to Danzel for making AIM on the PSP possible!

Please use this system responsibly! There are people out there with various handicaps that depend on it, so do not abuse it!

» To number 3

Ive always wanted skype for PSP. And now you can make free calls to real phones with skype.

by Zach - 2006-07-19 14:25
» Lol chill dude.

ronbo chill. Ill try to help. First, you need an AIM Account on your computer. Then, if you already have one or started one, add "My IP Relay" to your buddy list.

Then download AFKIM to your PSP, and start a bittlebee account. Then after you do that. Hit select, and choose AIM, and type in teh account u have on the computer AIM. And it will sighn in.

After that, Message "My IP Relay" and say "CALL XXX-XXX-XXXX" (XXX-XXX-XXXX being the area code and number of person your trying to call.) It will then tell you the progress of it. Sometimes it wont work so try it a couple of itmes.

Then once it says hello or something to you, thats the oporator typing to you what the person you called is saying. And whatever you type, they will say to the person that you called. And you guys will tlak back and fourth. Remember, the oporator is an actual person, so dont screw around. If hey dectect mesing aroudn, they will close the connection for the misuse of the system, but you can just call the person back anyway.

Simple. I hope that helped.

by hamburgler - 2006-07-19 14:28
» quit your shinanigans

everyone saying this is terrible that QJ.net would post this is really dumb. maybe it is only meant for the deaf, but does that mean deaf people cant go on psp.qj.net?

this site is meant for informing everyone about neat/cool/new psp things and this one of those things.

just because psp.qj.net posted it, doesnt mean people werent already using this for prank calls.

there's no 'My IP Relay'

by thrillho - 2006-07-19 14:42
» to #47

Yes, it's a real person. That way they can relay a message from a DEAF PERSON to a person who is not deaf.

Seriously QJ, take this off. When SomethingAwful.com started using this service for prank calling, they got a lawsuit threat, and now everyone mentioning misusing IPRelay now over there is banned.

by NOOOO - 2006-07-19 14:51
» NOOOO

THIS IS JUST HORRIBLE. THIS IS A SERVICE FOR DEAF PEOPLE. IF THE OPERATORS HEAR ONE BAD THING THEY BOOT YOU OFF BECAUSE YOUR A BAD PERSON

by PopcOrn DeVil - 2006-07-19 15:04
» This is good

Nobody ever said this was meant for deaf people, it may never had even been made in the first place for deaf people. All it does is benefit deaf people more than ourselves.

Is that operator a real person?

by thrillho - 2006-07-19 15:17
» to #51

Yes, it was made for deaf people.

The first sentence of the "About Us" page of Ip-Relay.com:

"IP-RELAY.com was the first service to offer deaf and hard of hearing persons the ability to place calls over the Internet."

And yes, it's a real person.

I agree with those people who say that it should not be abused. This should only be used by the deaf and hard of hearing like myself.

If people continue to abuse this, I think this should be removed from QJ.net... If people do not abuse this, then I think it should be left on here as something for deaf/hard of hearing to take a look at.

Please do not abuse this system!

It is a service for deaf or people that are hard of hearing. Abusing the system just for personal use is horrible. Just goes to show you how pspupdates.net really is the *****tiest homebrew site for PSP news. They plagiarize work, and report garbage.

by realgt - 2006-07-19 18:27
» an insiders perspective

i used to work for a company that provides this service...its certainly intended for deaf and the disabled. i'm not making any judgements here, though. its interesting to note that by law they are required to speak anything you type, including filthy, sexual, racist, and hateful words and phrases. they dont pay the relayers much, so dont be surprised if your call gets "disconnected" accidentally. and they have your IP/telephone number and can report fraudulent illegal use of the system btw...

here's the kicker: it's all paid for by you, suckers of america, in every phone bill
