Ubuntu 7.10 v0.1 beta - a GNU/linux shell program for PSP |
Ó
While shell programs are literally a dime-a-dozen around the PlayStation Portable homebrew community, it doesn't stop them from becoming interesting finds for the more avid homebrew fan. This latest shell application was developed by Jack, entitled "Ubuntu 7.10 v0.1 beta.
The biggest selling point of this app is that it was filed under a GNU/linux software license, which any programmer can modify and redistribute under the terms of the licence. Ubuntu 7.10 v0.1 comes with its own set of handy features as well. Here's a list of its basic features:
- Message anti-downloading ISO does appear that the first time you launch the HB
- Boot (start and stop)
- Login (user name and password)
- Office and bar spots current (application shortcuts, system and stop)
- Workstation
- MS Explorer, supports files:
- Lua (bug)
- MP3, Ogg
- PNG
- PBP
- You can launch a UMD through the workstation
- You can start the internet browser
- Changes in the following parameter: user name, password, speed of the mouse, or boot, time, screen background
For more information regarding the program's controls, you can read all about it on the documentation included in the file bundle. The program was written in French, so you may need to services of your favorite online translator.

is it actually using part of the linux system or is it just a con replicate? otherwise it is still interesting, and maybe worth looking into
...... it's a shell. which means it's either Lua or a web page. and since it can play music and run programs, it must be Lua.
Try windows for PSP http://downloads.khinsider.com/?u=18021
It can't be if it can launch a UMD, It could be LUA but I don't know much about LUA, however it does not mention LUA anywhere in it.
After all this OS is free you can order it from anywere u live and it set sail to your country free. I got it 3 disk of this OS PASS it on I tried to port this to the PSP using the OS virtually and using an Botsch Eboot that suppose to run linux or windows Virtual OS on the 1.50 PSP, since the new CFW have 1.50 CFW it should work.... But didn't... I guess making a Lua Shell Application port is faster and easier, but is not the same OS, not even virtually Well still is cool and gtreat... I'm planning to install this Ubuntu OS for PC to my next Laptop :) Works great and fast Secure Too Secure I say lol O well I will kep trying to port the virtual Version of this UBUNTU using the Botsch Eboot or may be make a new Source eboot that runs it on the PSP... Eventually when I start taking my C++ courses on colleage! Thanks! Cheers! PSPMAN90
I'd love for someone to translate this into English, it looks like something I'd get a lot of use out of.
Guys, this is just a Lua shell with some Ubuntu clipart thrown on top of it. It doesn't use the Linux kernel, nor can it use any of the GNU software that makes up Ubuntu. In short, it's just a shell with an Ubuntu-ish skin. You could just as easily replace the backgrounds with the default MS images and call it Vista.
Seeing as a full Ubuntu installation requires much more than the PSP can handle, I'm pretty sure the guys above who say it's a shell are right. Windows 95 is able to be ran on the PSP because it only requires 4 MB of RAM (Normal PSP has 32 MB RAM, Slim has 64MB), If Win95 runs, then that means Damn Small Linux probably could too, as it only takes up about 50MB, and uses about 16MB RAM. I don't know if the PSP's CPU can be used for it though, DSL needs a x86 processor, and I don't know if it is one, or if it's not. Just a take. [Ubuntu user]
anytime you see the word "shell", disregard everything else around it as its only another lua/webpage deal =P
I don't know how to use that,i need a key or something.
Unfortunately that applies to pretty much any shell but psix and irshell.
So when you run into that "shell", just crush it and keep browsing...
This POS soft bricked my system! I ran the shell, got to the login screen, and never could login, and when I exited, my system crashed, when it came back up, everything was in Chinese. I restarted the system, and all the settings where gone, i was back at the original setup screen. It lost my system name, wan settings everything, it completely dumped. Ever since I have not been able to get the cwcheat plugin to work (and no, cw was not on when I tried to run Ubuntu) If crazyC can port dos that will run dos games, win 3.1, and win 95, why can't someone come out with a decent OS port, granted I'm no coder, but don't brick my sh... with bad code. Also I ran the read me files through google translate, there really isn't much for instructions, but I have been using homebrew for quit sometime, so I don't question that it was installed properly. http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=83309
it's a shell. nice, but still a shell
The absolute minimum requirements for Ubuntu are: Intel Pentium 66 MHz processor 48 MB of system memory (RAM) 468 MB of disk space and the PSP does use an x86 CPU BTW (Windows 95 for PSP is an x86 emulator)
Theoretically, Linux (forget the distro, it's irrelevant) could run on the PSP, no problem. Generically speaking, the PSP has a 333 MHz MIPS processor (if memory serves), not an x86 processor as indicated by Katoh (the Windows 95 thing uses BOCHS, which emulates an x86 CPU, and in the process you lose a lot of processing power). Throw in 32 MB of RAM and you're already way above minimum operating requirements for Linux. The PS2 had about the same amount of RAM, with a far less ordinary MIPS processor, and ran Linux with no problem. Of course, from personal experience, I've also run modern Linux distros on 486s with 16 MB of RAM and still been able to run a couple GUI-based apps (the hard part was making it fit in 120 MB), and Linux runs fine on Motorola 68000 processors (the same kind used in the original Macintoshes and Palm Pilots up through the m500 series). But that's all theory. There's been some major issues, from what I understand, it getting anywhere near a Linux bootloader for the PSP because of all the roadblocks Sony's erected. Of course, this is just a shell, so it's all moot anyway.
OK, it's a shell, not an actual distro of Linux itself. I promise you, the moment Linux is ported to the PSP you'll have the Linus Torvalds fan club mobbing the comment forums. The coder is clearly some kind of "I run Linux, therefore I know everything about it" script kiddy who assumes that the interface style he's borrowing is unique to Ubuntu. It's not, it's Gnome 2, so this shouldn't even be called an "Ubuntu" shell, but rather a Gnome shell (careful, though, the KDE fanbois might try and mock up their own shell). The thing that screams at me is the "MS EXPLORER" entry which just says to me the kid who slapped this together has really got his head up his own digestive tract. It's an amateurish attempt to imitate a user interface that is in no way unique to Ubuntu or even GNU/Linux (Gnome in Mac OS X: I've done it...). Kid needs to get his facts straight. I also ask the same of you, Mr. Charles D: remove the "Custom Firmware" and "Ubuntu" tags. The software isn't licensed under "Gnu/linux" license, it's called the GNU General Public License, better known as GPL. Please do a little research before throwing around terms you're not familiar with.
Don't bother using BOCHS to emulate an x86 environment for Linux, it's not worth it. As far as the " ยป Well it must be using Some of Ubuntu/Linux... After all this OS is free you can order it from anywere u live and it set sail to your country free" angle: no. It's a cheap imitation using the same licensing agreement that all Linux distros use. Why wait to put Ubuntu on your next laptop? Use it on the computer you've got now. You can dual boot so you can retain Windows for other members of your family (you can even make it boot into Windows by default, and it'll never interfere with them). Hell, I did that back when Mandrake was still around and 500 MHz was blazing fast. Piece of cake, really.
it comes with very few details on installation no where in the read me file does it describes how to log in or that te default name and password is admin(editable by the way), has quiet a few bugs, needs the implementation of different languages or at least English. but overall is a nice piece of hb, would love to c some support from the dev
plugin doesnt even show under 3.95 cf so cant use it
Here in England, and probably in the English speaking world as a whole, we call this a "lie".
Thanks for clearing things up, I suppose it too can be done, having an OS that could (probably, I don't know) run at decent speed could provide for a PDA-like system if you throw a IR-keyboard in the mix.
