Top 10 Homebrew Summer Sizzlers - Part 1 of 2 |
Ó

Summer is upon us people! I'm not sure about those in the rest of the world, but I am certainly feeling the heat in the UK this month. There's one problem with the summer, and ironically, although the sun is out and there's a million and one things to do: there's still the issue of boredom.
Students get the summer off school, others take their holidays from work and sometimes you just feel bored. You've done everything in your local area, and there's nothing to do but laze around in the sun - which isn't as fun as it sounds. Then there's the idea of going on holiday somewhere different. Whether you go abroad or stay in your home country, there's still the problem of boredom whilst travelling. So here, we've compiled a top 10 list of homebrew applications or games that will keep you alive throughout the summer, whether your sat in your back garden or on a plane to Hawaii.
Now, some of you may be thinking Only homebrew? What about UMD releases. Well there's a story to that one too. To be frankly honest, there aren't really any UMD releases this summer to get excited about. Titles such as PQ - Practical Intelligence Quotient and Tenchu: Time of the Assassins both of which are released on June 23rd could be interesting but you can't be too sure. The only other titles on the horizon that catch my attention are Pac-Man World Rally and Super Monkey Ball Adventures, but the release dates of these two games are yet to be confirmed. So how can you turn down free entertainment int he form of homebrew? After all, this is the stuff thats gonna to keep you going through the summer.

Number 10 is a great application if you're planning on going on holiday to Europe, or just want to brush up on a few foreign languages over the summer - particularly if you're interested in learning a bit of French, Greek, Icelandic, and Spanish. Guessed yet? It's Raydar's PSLingo of course! This user-friendly application would be a great thing to use on those boring aeroplane trips. Learn a language on the way to your destination!Download: [PSLingo v1.0]

Coming in a number 9 is an organizational program. No it isn't going to give you hours of fun, but yes it is going to enhance your PSP experience. It's Ahman's iR Shell. Using this will enhance your PSP gaming experience, and believe me after an hour or so of going back to the PSP's XMB and waiting for loading times, you notice the difference of having a shell running in the background and your PSP's processor running at 333Mhz. The fact that corrupt icons are non-existant and with a wide range of skins and plugins available, this program is great. Just be sure to keep an eye on the battery level! Sadly this one is only for 1.5 users.

Now here's a corker for viewing your video files: PMP Mod. There ain't no better way to view movies on the move. Some people may disagree with me and believe that PSP Media Player which plays AVI/DivX and WMA files is better, but personally due to the sheer range of options and the quality of the video, I believe that Jonny's PMP Mod is the best media player out there. There are a wide range of versions available including Raphael's subtitle mod, so take your pick from the list below!Download: [PMP Mod 2.01 and PMP Mod AVC v1.00 with subtitle mod]

You may need a WiFi connection to use this, so using it in your back garden maybe the only option, but this application is perfect for listening to streaming radio from your PSP. It is of course Raf's PSPRadio. As featured in Go>Play magazine, PSPRadio lets you sit back and relax out in the sun with Internet streamed music caressing your ears. And if you get fed up of music, start playing with the PSPRadio plugins such as the Links2 web browser and AFKIM.Download: [PSPRadio 0.37 Final]

#6Here is the first actual homebrew game on this list, and it comes in the form of a bar classic: PSPool. This port of 'Another pool' has some great graphics, excellent gameplay and is very difficult when on the hard difficulty setting. It will really blow your socks off how addictive this game can be, and the 2 player mode provides endless fun. The first time I played this program I carried on until my PSP's battery ran out, then I realised I was supposed to be posting it here! Get your AC adapter ready.

I think you've had your lot for today. Check back soon for part 2 to see what comes in the top 5. What do you think will win the top spot and be crowned Homebrew application of the summer? Check back soon to find out...

lol..part 1 of two. Why don't you just say you only have half of it finished.
This applications are cool and all, but not exactly boredom blasters....Can't wait to see the top five! And to LoL, you are the N00b.
#2 is right, =P anyway, not bad, but I would probably have listed IRshell and PSPradio at #2 and #3 with devhook at #1 (watch, thats gonna be #1 in the end. I bet so much. just watch, IM gonna point it out when they post it...) oh and psplingo?? not saying its bad, but theres way better stuff IMO
Nice list. Surprised PSPradio didn't make it into the top 5 though. I've always felt it surpasses almost all other homebrew efforts.
You are all correct. Apps like iR Shell enhance your PSP experience and are great, but their not really something to use when your bored; whereas something like PSPool would.
The SNES emulator will probally be in part 2 as long with other emulators:)
These are all great apps, but they've been out for a long time. If people werent using them back then (for reasons other than they didn't know about it), it's not like they'll suddenly try them out of boredom. Im sure people have better things to do when they're bored. Like troll on the internet, for example.
i want another psp to play homebrew... oh wait i do.
does the PSPradio work for 2.6? i mean with plug-in and stuff? or still unable to use plug-ins on 2.6 PSP?
Tenchu sucks. I'ts been out for awhile and its not good at all.
- DevHook - Descent port - SNES9x TYL - DGEN
1. Devhook 2. Quake 3. SNES9x TYL 4. Beats of Rage 5. ... k theres only 4 i can think of :p
We get Loco Roco on the 23rd of June, apparently. You could import that if you need something to tide you over for the summer. :) Also, Japan is getting Tekken. I'm thinking about importing that one, as November is far too long ...
That Mario game for the psp. It's very good and addictive: Super Mario Bros ‘Iceland’, a SuperTux mod. Link: http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=9549
That appears to be a mix up with dates. PQ will be released on this date in Europe, but is already available inthe US.
i vote for SimpleAmp!!
#16. just because you live in america, doesnt mean everyone else does. *****stick, go buy a map. you are the reason americans have a bad name
i vote for McDonalds serve and go
Too bad #20, deal w/ it, in fact, its organize, not organise, defense, not defence, and other sh**....
Get past the time zones..who cares..we can't satisfy both worlds at the same time and expect it to be perfect. Now, for the homebrew...don't forget to include Squarez, if you do not..you are not a true homebrewer ;)
Cool list, Kyle M. Looking forward to part II. Hey, Chris C., you see what Kyle M. is doing here? His op-ed ads are actually newsworthy. They're not daydreaming fantasies of the games the PSX emulator _might_ have or articles about your opinions on the potential of the PSP on platformers and puzzle games. If you're getting paid for your 'pieces' (I won't say of what they are) donate that money to a charity, you don't deserve it.
CALLISTO!!!!!!! Should be mentioned IMHO.
ok first of all do you guys know where to get some good neo geo roms or gba roms??? I'm SOL most of the sites I go to are CRAP CRAP CRAP. ok and next as far as emulators go when up-dates are made likes snes and the creator doesnt use the two folder eboot and eboot%. What do you do with that file title somthing .RAR what program do I need to convert that so I can use it on my psp or where do I place that RAR file??? PLEASE HELP MR NOOB HE WILL FOREVER BEEN IN DEBT TO WHOM EVER HELPS ME!!! thanks
#1 is definetely Quake for the psp cause it's awsome , ohh and I beleived someone was gonna port Quake 2 to the psp , WTF happened???? , anyways mr. noob , I don't think pspupdates let people post site URLs for roms and isos but I think that maybe emuv2 might have a .com site so you can check out ;)
you are a god among gods thanks for the help!
you are a god among gods thanks for the help!
Great! This is exactly what I needed. Can't wait for part 2
