Software, Firmware, and now, Prayerware: The KJV Bible Comes to PSP |
Listed in: Homebrew Applications, News Tags: psp homebrews
Ó

Now, devout PlayStation Portable users wishing to take a break from destroying monsters, running down inner-city pedestrians and wiping out hostile armies with tactical nukes can enjoy some spiritual refreshment with their own electronic version of the King James Bible.
This project was programmed by a blogger who goes by "Shadowprophet" (aka Patrick Boyd), who says the project started when he found a hypertext version of the KJV online. Discovering it was compatible with the PSP operating system. He has since modified it to run on PSP more easily, requiring less scrolling, and the ability to go to any specific section of the text.
Patrick says, "It is my hope this will help others in studying God's Word." It is this writer's hope that it doesn't stop here, and that eventually, all the world's great spiritual writings from Johann Eckart to Gautama Buddha will find their way to a variety of platforms.

PSP be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy game be done,
On console as it is internet.
Give us this day our daily UMD.
And forgive us our homebrews,
As we forgive those who hack us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from Nintendo.
For thine is the PSP,
and the processor,
and the memory stick,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Only then will I be satisfied.

This is the bible we are talking about here. Not some of that other homebrew crap you run on your tired psp. You better get your attitude together or you are going straight to h-e- double hockey sticks. NOW PRAY! Before God sends someone to smash your cyber skull in.

So I think this is great.
Maybe god has wireless three player action with Jesus & Muhammed.
Wouldn't that be sweet.
lol
Well Mr. Boyd. Congratulations for doing this, but
if you want to reserve your place in the afterlife, you should endeavor to translate the Qur'an & other biblical books as well.

If you don't care about religion, why bother commenting? You're not really contributing anything useful...disagree all you want but at least do it in a civilized manner.

Look at the kind of violent video games that are avaliable for the psp. They don't strike me as something that people who follow the bible would play (it would probably be a sin to play them anyway
Or, I suppose it could be used as a quick guide to see if you're allowed to play a certain game. Hmm, lets see... GTA.. does virtual killing of people count as a sin? QUICK! Load the bible homebrew!!!
Aww, damn, I'm going to hell!

As for the idea, I'm atheist, but I guess this ok for those hardcore christian gamers

i've got nothing against god/no god. believers that would die for their abstract are something to fear/despise.

I'm a Christian, but let me tell you this...
How can there is NO Creator?
I'm not talking about GOD as in Christianity...just a higher being outside of time...
How did "evolution" begin? Did matter just exist from the "beginning" of time? And then suddenly it exploded and formed this intricate universe?
That's stupid...
Reply
In my personal belief there is no 'beginning', everything has been. About your need for a god to create something, where would god's origin be? Why could god always be but matter can't? Consider both options.
Most religions are spawned somewhat from a fear of death. Death is accounted for in religions by an afterlife of everlasting glory (or horrible pain if you don't follow them). Try to face the scariness that when you die it's all over. You cease to exist, there is nothingness for you, no thinking. Many people can't cope with that.
"And then suddenly it exploded and formed this intricate universe?"
The time span were talking about is extremely large. None of what we have suddenly occured overnight, it took an incredibly large amount of time. If you actually want to do some research in your statements here is some information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_life
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution
My guess is that you wont read any of this because you seem to be set into your beleifs. You say "Thats stupid" to an incredibly complex situation.
I DID look at some "scientific" proofs of god. It was hardly objective and a pretty good laugh. Often the Bible is used to 'prove' god exists when in reality a human wrote that. They could have written anything.
Heres one of the things I read: http://www.doesgodexist.org/Phamplets/Mansproof.html

I doubt this software will become a replacement for the real physical Bible, and I highly doubt the author intended it to be. It's a neat idea (which as mentioned above has other applications for other texts).
What I continue to find sad about the forums on this site is the high proportion of people who just insult, and tear down others for no constructive reason. Why do those who disapprove of this software show such hatred? I would challenge you to think of this as an act no different as racism or the unfair fear and hatred directed towards Muslims after 9/11.
…as to Christian's playing violent games... I doubt it's constructive for a healthy mind, but most adults can determine the difference between fantasy and reality... if this is a challenge for you, I suggest you discontinue the pursuit of videogames, as your just not up to it.
God Bless

RELIGION CAUSES WARS
Nearly all global conflict is a direct result of different peoples beliefs and its all bollocks. Every religion is bull*****. Science PROOVES it, the bible prooves nothing.

Religion causes wars? Hmmm I think PEOPLE cause wars. I think individuals or groups of people who want something or to enforce their ideas could cause wars...
Now as a recent example there is the war in Iraq... is that war brought on by relegion? Is it brought on by the beauty of the human spirit, out to liberate the poor people of Iraq from a tyrant? Or is it because of Oil? Hmm I wonder...
"Science PROOVES it, the bible prooves nothing." - Please! I encourage you to elaborate on this!
The theory of evolution and the big bang theory, are the two biggest human explinations as to why we are here. I am not saying I think they are rubbish, I simply do not believe that by it's self. That our world and universe could be an accident, it's too beautifull and chaos is rarely beautifull. Now Mr oh dear at Number.45, you say 'Science PROOVES it' but a 'theory' is simply an idea, a hypothosis. Not proof.
It's such a shame that this 'war' of words has had to occur. You could choose to believe that this is religion's fault... but the way I see it, it only serves to prove mine. People cause wars, because they want to form the world to their thoughts. You think the bible is rubbish and Christians are stupid, that's fine, I believe God gave us all free will to make our minds up, I will not shuv my beliefs down your throat, you can make up your own mind. I am still human though, and if you attack me, physically or verbally I will respond.
If you love Science as you seem too then you should love truth, as that is what all scientists seek to prove. I challange you to see the real truth, and stop speaking your hate filled words, on matters you don't seem to understand. If you were in anyways, really enlightened you wouldn't have wrote what you did.
For the record I come to this site because I love video games, and because I like the PSP system. I picked mine up the day before the the offical Japanese release in my local game store in Fushimi, Kyoto, Japan. I was really excited to follow what developers have been able to do on the PSP. I love the ablitly to carry arround the games I used to play on the SNES and Mega Drive (Genesis) as a kid.
So I would politely ask that if you havent anything nice to say, don't. If you love peace (which you seem to as you hate Religion, cause of all wars) I'd ask you to refrain from causing these mini wars online. If you feel it's stupid, then why worry? Anything that's stupid disspears quickly as people become bored of it. So if Christianity is stupid it wouldn't have been around very long, and will dissapear soon wont it? As enlightend people such as yourself eloquently put you idea's accross how could the rest of us fail to see your obvious and strong sence of logic.
Peace
Jaydee ^_^
