SodR: "I got ripped off" regarding ThemePSP v2 |
Listed in: Homebrew Applications, News Tags: psp homebrews

Somebody edited a respected developer's application and released it as his own without permission or credit. Here's what happened:
- A few days ago we saw ThemePSP v2 in the QJ forums. We thought "cool, ThemePSP has been updated" and one of us decided to write about it. It was supposed to be a straightforward update: "version X has been updated into version Y," and many of you made happy comments and tried the new version out.
- ThemePSP v2 was released by "M_Roc" - but the ThemePSP project is a project by SodR (the latest official release was v1.2, pictured above). When the article came out, some people wondered if the project been passed on to somebody else or if SodR change nickname or if SodR had brought somebody else on board for the project (Urza the Tyrant over at the QJ forums said something similar in SodR's thread).
- Kristine's article was linked to an article about SodR's ThemePSP article (which had "SodR" on it) and included the ThemePSP tag (which has "SodR" written all over that); M_Roc released the homebrew with a changelog that closely resembled that of SodR's ThemePSP v1.2 ("New nicer GUI!"). From the look of things, I don't think anybody suspected theft.
Regarding "ThemePSP v2" (I got ripped off)
A while ago I released an app called ThemePSP which made you able to flash your own "Themes" to the PSP (font, gameboot, background etc.) and the last version was 1.2. The program got actually got quite popular and there was a theme creating thread here runned by Urza The Tyrant (props to you!). Since I thought noone should rip my program I didn't implent the pictures into the eboot so anyone could change them and the font without no programming skills at all.
Everything was fine until I checked pspu today. Someone called "M_Roc" had just changed the pictures, edited the readme file (He keept the same file, just edited my name away) and released it under the name ThemePSP v2. There is something I just want to set clear at this point:
* I did not aprove anyone to use the name ThemePSP, nither the code it's based on or edit the pictures or the readme.
* I did not aprove M_Roc (or any other person for that matter) to use my program.
Yepp, it looks like I got ripped of. He didn't even mind to change the name of the app, he just released it as v2.
Another word to the blogger here on qj, Kristine C , who I'll quote

Time to check up your sources...
I was never one of the really great devs on the PSP scene so I never really thought someone would rip me off, but obviously there are such persons here, and that is why I have decided to not release anything more (I acctually got a working Hexic clone on my harddrive which I'll never finsh...). So thanks for all the good times I have had with my PSP and all the great persons that do exist. (And fcuk you M_roc who destroyed my day).
Regards, SodR
btw. I might check in a last time on the pspu forum to release the sources to my apps, there might be other persons who what to rip me off.
SodR, please don't let your disappointment over this remove you from the homebrew community. Your application has gotten quite popular, and there are many of us who want to see a new (official) version.

It's entirely someones choice if they don't want to release their works.
But.. Come on! Look at how many devs are leaving the scene for silly reasons. Some guy impersonates you and tries to steal your work.. Okay, so report him, have a QJ post telling him off, then go on.
It's the same with a few other devs that quit because a couple people insulted their programs. It's almost like they're just looking for a public reason to announce quitting, so as to make a big stir and feel important, because occasional thanks from the few people that actually like their programs aren't cutting it for their ego anymore.
Again, don't confuse this with various other devs like Dark_AleX, etc who have real reasons for even considering leaving the scene. Nor should anyone take this the wrong way - they do have a right to quit. But they really don't need to make such a big deal of it. People are leaving over silly reasons that could be addressed in a different way, such as exposing code theft, or not giving out their email, etc.
Shame about not releasing the Hexic clone though - that'd be suh-weet.

do you get mad that the burgers you flip don't go out with your name on them too?

He kind of DID make a difference. People used his program. People liked it. Someone flat out stole it. He got rightfully angry.
Now please, go take some anti-depressants, and don't post abusive comments.

It is truly pathetic what you do. If someone stole something that you had worked on hard and then changed the name on it so it looked like yours would or would you not be PO'ed?
Granted, leaving because of it is a bit "drama queen" though...

He is also know as MZ_8691, and trust me, all he is is TROUBLE. If he tries to join the forum ban him right away, he's bad news...

just leave these kind of posts in a place they should be rather than official front page news and keep releasing programs and codes of what ever nature it doesnt matter who ripps or who writes them as long as its something useful and worth installing onto the psp thats what we all worry about.
about leaving the scene as a theme of focus he can leave if he wants i dont see $ony giving whilst we have all these h4x0r$ out there so i dont have any need to believe coders should leave over such a small issue.

the world famous SodR is leaving the scene :( after all he has done for it! and to go out like this while on top of the PSP world and with such a firm grasp of the english language!
all sarcasm aside dont you think you're being a bit overdramatic? like we're all supposed to cry for you and beg you to stay on the scene?? it's not like a firmware downgrader you made was ripped off, it was a simple little app that did some minor cosmetic changes that x-flash does just as well or better.
i completely agree that it sucks you were ripped off and i sympathize, i'm a musician that has had my stuff hijacked too, but you talk like you're giving up on making all our psps warp through time and space when all that happened was some a$shat put his name on your dinky little app.

I could see myself paying for a downgrader or devhook but wouldn't that be completely opposite of what the scene is supposedly about? and how would that make you better than $ony?
all it would do is cause even more piracy and fraud as people interested in an app find new ways of getting it, causing devs to come up with new security measures creating the vicious cycle that already goes on between homebrew devs and $ony/M$/Preteendo.
there's nothing you can do to stop app hijacking, and what happened is exactly what should; the dumba$s is exposed for what he is. Besides we all know who the real pros on the scene are anyway.
