RCO Swapper v2

RCO - Image 1Daveychan passed by the boards earlier to let us in on his RCO Swapper, now updated to v2. What does it do? This homebrew application allows PSP owners to easily customize their unit's XMB menu without the complexities of hex editing or patches - a figurative game of Russian Roulette if you don't know what you're doing.

Version 2 of this app will now allow users to edit not just the XMB menu but the sub-menus as well, which should make for even more personalization. Daveychan does apologize for the long wait - there were 29 menu names to code for.

We're sure you guys don't mind, though - given the sort of happy reactions being shown for version 1. Make sure to view the bundle's README for the installation instructions. And as we're on the subject of customizability, make sure to check out some of the XMBwave homebrew apps featured here to up the ante for your PSP's personal touch. Enjoy!

» Some replies....

Hello, just a few replies to some of your comments:

- As i stated in the ReadMe: "it is mandatory that you use the 242KB "topmenu_plugin.rco" file". This is the same file we have been using to change our icons with for the last few months, using kgsws's nice trick. (There have been several variations of this hack, look on the forums.)

- For the latest 3.10OE-A' topmenu_plugin.rco file, is this file currently able to have it's icons replaced? If it is, send me that information, and I will work on this to make sure it is compatible with that topmenu_plugin file. If it isn't, wait until one of the other programmers comes up with a way to change those icons (or do it yourself) and then i'll update this again.

- The TM text DOES get changed, which is why I put them on the menu, allowing them to be edited (specifically UMD*, LocationFree* Player, and Memory Stick*) The TM is actually ONE character. If you change UMD* to say... "DisK" it will work and there will NOT be a TM symbol.

- Use flashers that you've used before and that you TRUST (X-Flash, PSP Customizer, etc.) I would never recommend doing a manual replacement of the file. If you make even the smallest mistake, you could be in big trouble. (Remember, the original topmenu_plugin file is in the "Backup" directory of this program.)

- If you have some bugs to report, please so so AFTER you have tested this yourself. If you are scared to flash, try replacing the topmenu_plugin in your Devhook directory to verify it (also in the readme).

- If you don't know how to flash, or you don't understand the ReadMe, you should stop what you are doing and hit the forums. Do some research before you do anything!

- Several people have used this with 100% success. If something is going wrong, chances are YOU are doing something wrong.

» cool

I used the first version, this one is much better. I've customized all of my submenu names almost :)

by Daveychan - 2007-02-13 15:09
» Clarification

You must use the latest available DECRYPTED RCO file which comes from a FW2.50 dump. It is 242Kb in size and is also the same file you use to change the XMB icons.

» YES

Yes, but you must use the latest available DECRYPTED RCO file which comes from a FW2.50 dump. It is 242Kb in size and is also the same file you use to change the XMB icons.

by Daveychan - 2007-02-13 22:00
» Don't do it manually!

I STRONGLY recommend you use X-Flash or Customizer to be safe. Making ANY mistake when flashing can be disasterous!

by Daveychan - 2007-02-13 22:24
» Wait Wait Wait.. i am wrong!

Apparently a decrypted FW2.50 topmenu won't work at all on FW3.10, Sony has completely tried to block it. Until we get a workaround, not even an encrypted FW3.03 topmenu will work on FW3.10! For now, you can only use the FW3.0xOE versions for ANY kind of customized icons or menus.

» How to over-ride Sandisk name for Mem stick?

Great program!

I only have one small question...I changed the name of my Memory stick to "The Chip" yet it shows up on my XMB as "Sandisk" with a little "TM" next to it...is there a way to fix this? All of the other name swaps worked fine, it's just this one where the brand name is showing up.

by Nate - 2007-02-14 02:14
» How?

How do you get the topmenu.rco file?

by Simian - 2007-02-14 07:00
» with 3.03OE-C firmware,

just connect your PSP to your PC with a USB cable, start your PSP with the R trigger held in, go to advanced, then toggle USB flash 0 on. Open the folder titled "VSH" then the "resource folder" and the topmenu_plugin.rco file is in there. Copy it into the folder with the RCO swapper on your PC, then go to work. To install it, simply copy the new file created by the RCO swapper back into the same folder that you got it out of, then toggle the USB off on your PSP, and exit. It should start up with your new names. If you don't have 3.03OE-C then you'll have to use X-Flash or some other flasher program to do it, which is a real pain in the ass.

by Simian - 2007-02-14 07:09
» ^^

I find it much easier to just do it manually. Then you don't have to mess with installing a flasher program, running it, rebooting it, etc. You just toggle on the USB and go. It's only 1 file you're replacing, as long as you don't screw with anything else you should be fine. And if you do mess something up and semi-brick, that's what the recovery folder is for.

by Daveychan - 2007-02-14 13:51
» How odd...

Hey there... i'm thinking you don't have an original topmenu_plugin file there! It's already been hex edited is my guess... I've been through this file from top to bottom and there is no "Sandisk" anywhere... start again with a "fresh" topmenu_plugin file and you should be okay. (Grab one from a FW2.50 dump.) Good luck!

by Simian - 2007-02-14 15:22
» thanks

Okay, I see...I thought it was something that the memory stick was doing. Hmmm...I guess I'll just live with the Sandisk, as I don't want to lose my custom icons. Thanks for the reply though, and once again, great program!

» Change your mind?

Hey.. just got your Theme Pack... what happened?

by Simian - 2007-02-16 23:03
» .

You have to be on 3.03OE-C. If you're not, then you'll have to use X-flash or some other program to run it.

If you do have 3.03OE-C, then it is in the recovery menu under "Advanced"
