The Raptor 3D makes 3D easyRaptor 3D is a homebrew 3D engine for the PSP. It's a 3D graphics tool for people who want to develop their own homebrew games.

Remember this is at the alpha stage, and there might be bugs, but Kojima's been pretty quick with updating previous versions.

About Version 4, Kojima had this to say: "Here is alpha 4, dedicated to QJ net for mirroring all my releases :)" Aw. Shucks. Yes, Version 4 is now at our download site (click on the link below).

Here's Kojima's description of this latest alpha version:
  • An Infinitely Faster Animation System
Optimized to the absolute brink; the previous demo which ran at 21fps now runs at over 60fps (how much over is hard to tell, with the PSP's 60fps HW limit). So now you can realistically use animated meshes within your app game.
  • A Single Surface Particle System
This is easy to use: it's a particle system where each particle is part of a single surface generated in each frame (optimized so it's fast). This means that even if you have a thousand particles, they are all rendered in one call to glDrawElements. All particles are automatically pointed towards the active camera, and can be textured.
  • 3D Text Capability
The font renderer can now produce 3D text and return them as an entity usable just like any other mesh. You can rotate, scale, and position them anywhere in your 3D world. Like the font renderer, it uses the active font as the texture for the text.
  • Material Blend Modes
Now each material has a blend mode that specifies how it is blended in with the screen. Currently supported is Mask which treats transparent pixels as see-through even on 3D meshes (perfect for fences, windows, etc.). This allows you to use simple geo with complex shapes. Also supported is Solid and Add.
  • A 3D Credit System
Using the 3D text engine, this allows you to create rolling credits (like the credits at the end of a movie or game).
The demo included with the code has a rolling intro similar to "Star Wars" movies (it calls for a music file called "theme1" so Kojima explained: "I use the actual 'Star Wars' theme personally but for legal reason I can't include it").

Of course, this latest alpha release also includes more bug fixes and other improvements.

Thanks to Kojima's constant updates, it's becoming a more exciting time for PSP homebrew game makers looking for 3D tools. In fact, there's also another 3D engine from LTE Studios.

This is spectacular work. The homebrew scene LIVES off people like the guys over at LTE Studios, and PS2Dev. Without them, where would all you pirating, whiny, children be. Now we all should see some awesome games coming out within the next year. Touche`

You don't have to be ashamed you don't know any of this Disciple, most people don't. But don't go off padding yourself on the back for realizing that improvements like these actually help to better the homebrew community.

If you want to come across as pretentious then there are numerous other places where you can roam, impressing children of the ages of 6, maybe 7.

Also to answer your failed rhetoric question on what the pirating youth would be doing without homebrew, probably using the psp as sony intended, with less psp's being purchased and probably more game sells.

And conclusively, I really doubt that engine improvements will eventually spawn inspiring and original games. So far the most "awesome" homebrew games as you so boldly put it, were mere rip-offs or bad translations of already existing games. It's going to take a lot longer for we see a a homebrew game more worthwhile than according to the predictions you made.

Hopefully these changes can benefit to meliorate the dreadful and heinous menu's of certain emulators.

Yes, I know making an inspiring, original game takes ALOT of effort, time, and determination, but there will always be those few programmers out there that will stop at nothing to create these games. Before the resources were scarce. Creating an engine takes most of the developing time. If you are a programmer, you'd know that, and you'd appreciate this feat more if you already don't. Now that programmers see that they wont have to write their game engine from scratch, I am certain that we will see much, much improvement in the homebrew scene.

God damn, I hope the scene lives for a few more years...that'll give me enough time to release MY game. ;)

sometimes 2D graphics are better than 3D graphics :/

Christ, when I read "Raptor 3D" I thought it was a 3D remake of "Raptor: Call of the Shadows". Almost had a heart attack, that game was so great.

» ok...

#9 you are pretty wrong.... heres the real answer to #7's question: most hacks came from ISO related programmers, DarkAlex.. Ookm..(brilliant minds) so most pirating children would actually be hanging out at ISO sites more often and pirate more, also since there aren't homebrews... then they have even more reason to pirate EVERYDAY... wow didn't think of that? yes your right, some emulators have simple GUIs, and hopefully devs can improve that, but SNES emulator's GUI and menu is just SOOOO darn good(thanks yoyofr!)

Yeah also #12 I hope the scene stays alive for a few more years, who knows what some devs are hiding? lol !

yeah nice! I hope good devs work together and make an amazing game for the PSP!
