PSPLINKTyRaNiD over at ps2dev.org has released a new version of PSPLINK. It's basically a tool which can help homebrew developers immensely. Its purpose it to provide a shell on your PC via SIO, WIFI or USB. If you're wondering what exactly this means, then it most probably isn't for you. Plus, it can access your PSP's internals in realtime. You can even dump the memory contents, use it for debugging and print messages on PC, or even take screenshots !

To give you a better understanding, let me explain to all the homebrew developers out there.

Whats the drill while making homebrew ?
  • Write Code.
  • Compile it and rectify any errors or warnings.
  • Connect PSP to PC and Transfer files.
  • After disconnecting PSP, navigating to homebrew and executing it.
  • Waiting for some time while homebrew is booted.
  • Cursing yourself when there's a stupid bug.
  • And back to step 1.
Now it might not sound like much, but the Connecting -> Transferring -> Disconnecting -> Executing part really wastes a lot of time. I've made homebrew, so I know pretty much how frustrating it is.

And there's where this great application comes in. Rather than doing that same old boring drill after you compile something, all you have to do is transfer your updated build over one of the 3 methods supported (Serial Port, WIFI, USB). Might not sound much, but in the longer run, you can save hours which can be spent writing better homebrew.

But wait ! That's just the first use of it. For all those who have been saying that developing for the PSP is difficult because you cant debug applications at runtime, well, you can use this great application to debug your applications. Plus, add the ability to take screenshots and direct messages to your PC, and this application becomes one of those must-have applications for PSP Development.

Although at first, it will be difficult to understand it, a manual has been provided by him which should ease you into it. Please read it before trying out anything since it's not your cool-shiny IDE.

It's a shame that this needs Kernel mode. See ps2dev.org for info on how to use this with a serial cable.

PSPLink has been around now for a while, and anyone that is doing serious development would have already known and be using it.

pspdev.org is where real psp development is discussed as the forum here is clogged by somewhat uninteresting information.

For example here is a screen shot (menu) for an upcoming release. Serious who could care less.

The point of psplink is you can develop applications without the usual reboot cycle (which on 1.5 is really long), you can debug applications when the s*** hits the fan and you can mount directories off your PC straight onto the psp under the host file system. While it really isn't much use for non-devs there is something to be said for being able to play Kill Everything That Moves when you only have a 32Mb memory stick :)
