PSP WOL (Wake-on-LAN) |
Ó
Going into further details, WOL is a PC option that allows the computer to be booted normally via remote link. This option is normally activated via the "Wake-on-LAN" setting on your PC's BIOS, although additional tweaking will be required in the Windows browser.
WOL works by reserving power for your PC's network card even after your computer is shut down. At this point, the network card is configured to receive a "Magic Packet" - a data bundle if you will - that's been broadcast for that PC's IP, which will then prompt the PC to boot up by remote. Imagine brainwashing somebody to wake up by a simple key word, and you get the idea. As a limitation, though, this PSP version is limited to waking PCs on hibernation or standby mode - it won't work on fully powered down units.
If combined with other PSP-PC remote access homebrew applications like Foobar2000 Remote Interface, PSPFTPD, or PSP WiFile Transfer , you can just imagine the potential flexibility PSP WOL grants PSP and PC owners. Installation instructions and IP setup for computers running on Windows XP await in the file README, which should be available in the download link just below you. EvilDooinz has also provided PSP WOL's source code - fellow coders may want to read this over to see how the application was made. Enjoy!

I have one of those on my pocket pc and I use it all the time. Great work, man!
Sounds interesting! Can't try it on my p.c. cos it is messin about! But noce app!!!
*NICE APP!!!
this would be even better if you could make your pc play music as well, so if you wake up in the morning, with push of 2 buttons, your pc wakes up and plays whats already in the windows media player or something, like a remote
LOL EYE RONEY
Sorry, but could someone tell me what the purpose of this is? Why do I want to turn my PC on remotely? I'm not flaming the app, I'm just curious as to what this can be used for.
Simple example but taken from the real life: When I get up in the morning I always stay for some time (because Im a lazy student). Instead of getting up, turning on the PC and start foobar in order to listen to some music and crawling back to bed I just reach out for the PSP, push one button for WOL and another one for Foobar. I'm sure there are better ways to use this but for me this is very convenient.
You can turn on your PC from the bathroom and control it using VNC. :D You can even start a torrent using the web interface of Azureus, for example. :)
That doesn't work with USB Wifi adapters, does it?
