We received an email from a user named Skeletor (and others, thanks guys) that Sony has released a new firmware update for the PSP, version 2.60. Checking it out ourselves this is indeed true, and firmware 2.60 is now the latest version. This version does include some good new updates including WMA music support, an RSS channel, and Chinese language support for the internet browser.

IMPORTANT: By installing this update you will NOT be able to run homebrew. Currently there is no known way to run homebrew on 2.01, 2.50 and now 2.60. There is currently no known downgrade method for the said firmwares.

Additions in this firmware update include:

? [RSS Channel] has been added as a feature under [Network].

? [Simplified Chinese (GB18030)] and [Tradition Chinese (Big5)] have been added as options to [Encoding] under [View] in the [Internet Browser] menu bar. (Characters may be indistinct in some cases when these encoding options are selected.)

? [Volume Adjustment] has been added as a feature to [LocationFree Player].

? You can now download video data that supports copyright protection using the [Internet Browser].

? WMA has been added as a codec that can be played under [Music]. (This applies to music data saved on your Memory Stick.) Note: You must adjust a system setting to enable playback of WMA format music data. A connection to the internet is required to adjust the setting.

I think about the whole "piracy" (if you could even call it that) thing and here are my conclusions in regards to that...

FU*K EM

pretty much because I buy something, I can do whatever I want with it. wipe my behind, or run my own code or whatever freakin code I want..

How about you let sony tell you what kind of tampons to use next?

I think that homebrew is gr8, i know that sony is probably thinking "if we allow homebrew then loads of people will complain if they manage to run a PSP virus or something"

I think that Sony is really making a mistake, as I want freedom from what I buy, I don't want to be told what I can and cannot run on my PSP, so what if I run some old games? Sure, crack down on guys who are playing PSP ISOs, but not guys who just want a portable way of playing Sonic 2...

lol, illegal machine, say that to adoption and pets.

buying a product also means you're taking a responsibility of using it with care.
why else would they void the warranty.

I bet you'll say something like "more worth it"
or something, but it's your own opinion, and you don't have to scream it out to others just coz they have different view:D

Doesn't anybody get it? Sony is trying to lock up the PSP even tighter. As if putting spyware on music CDs wasn't enough, now they're tightening up what you can watch on the PSP. Don't be too surprised if an upgrade comes out in the near future that doesn't let you play videos or music that you've encoded yourself.

This would really be Sony biting the hand that feeds them. While the popularity of homebrew is nowhere near enough to really make a difference in PSP sales, the ability to play video and music really is important to almost every PSP owner out there. If Sony decides to do like Apple and restrict the media you can use to only "protected" content (as in you pay Sony for it) then the end of the PSP will not be far behind.

There will be better and better games coming out for higher and higher firmwares. If you're going to want to play new games then you're going to have to updates sooner or later.
I enjoyed homebrew but GTA and SOCOM are better

I think these additions are just some extra thigns they threw in there so people wouldnt know the REAL reason they made a new firmware was to stop that small explit on 2.5, so I think to get new stuff form sony, we gotta epxloit every firmware a bit so thye can make a new firmware with new features until they give us wut we want!

Don't be so paranoid GodMedia... True Sony is about as evil empire as you can get. But honestly you are grasping at straws there.

They didn't tighten up anything when it comes to what you can watch on the PSP. In fact they gave you two new options.

The reason there is a protected video option now is because Sony has plans to start offering video downloads soon.

Take a moment, take a deep breath and think about what you said? Would Sony really kill off one of the major selling points of the PSP? I hardly think so.

Illegal Machine:
pretty much because I buy something, I can do whatever I want with it. wipe my behind, or run my own code or whatever freakin code I want..

Nope, sorry. When you so much as use the PSP, you implicitly agree to be LEGALLY bound by the EULA (end-user license agreement) in the PSP manual. Therefore, Sony CAN tell you what you can and can't do with it. Now the actual ENFORCEMENT... that's a whole different matter ;D

Vannoy:
Actually I would be surprised if homebrew and ISO loaders count for more then 2% of the PSP's users.

Every single person I know who owns a PSP uses homebrew. In fact, I was using NESterJ on my PSP yesterday in our college's dining hall, a guy walked past and asked what I was playing (Dragon Warrior 4), and told me he has a bunch of emulators, too. This guy wasn't a geeky-looking guy; in fact, I think he was one of our football players. Still, he uses homebrew.

I'd say it's somewhere more around 40-50%.

I have a psp and I dont use homebrew. I am not the "norm" psp user since I am a girl. The PSP does tons of other great things other than playing stupid old games! I enjoy 2.0, and would upgrade when there are more features cool enough to do so. I am sure there are tons of people who own psps who are not 10 years old like most of you guys and actually use it to do things other than play outdated games.

It's a shame that Sony has such a great little product on their hands, and won't let it be what it can, instead pushing their own agenda as to how they think their users want to use their product.

Like any other company, (evil or not), Sony will want to protect their intellectual property. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the WMA thing is a response to Apple's iTunes video store, with the PSP being able to play DRMed video and audio from the Windows Media store.

If Sony decides to do like Apple and restrict the media you can use to only "protected" content...

The new iPod can play unprotected media (mp3, m4a, mp4, etc.) fine. On the other hand, the only protected media it can play is from the iTunes store.

What cheap bastard would pirate?
Me.
Yes, I have a job. I get $6.75 per f*%^ing hour. I can't afford to buy a bunch of $50 games. I'll ask for them for Christmas.

This stuff is overpriced and we all know it.

everybody needs to chill out. sony isnt forcing anyone to upgrade, but i think its cool that they are really working on improvements for it. Just because you dont like the upgrade, dont go crazy sony isnt putting a gun to your head and forcing you, and Protected video is obviously to compete with ipod video and itunes video store, so sony isnt trying to control what you watch, this is just the groundwork for some huge business plan. I also think that its cool that tthe consumers and hackers push Sony to do thing with the PSP they hadnt thought of before. Sony realizes no one is going to fall for a 2.01 anymore which has no real upgrades, and they realize they have to add features to grab users attention. i upgraded one of my psps to 2.6 and while RSS feature is nice touch, it is very unuseful. It looks like you can only use it with like podcasts and you have to be on internet to use it, kind of defeating the whole purpose of having portable rss. I think by FW 3.00 we will maybe see music and video store which is really cool, It would also be cool to have like AIM messenger where new messages pop up like if your browsing web or playing game kind of like xbox live. It would also be cool if sony added java, flash, and way to listen to music while browsign web. As long as teh hombrew scene keeps hacking, Sony is going to keep working harder.

hey Sara Rose, I don't use my 1.5 PSP to run outdated homebrew games, I use it to run full .iso files of PSP UMD Games, it is illegal but does that stop me from doing it. So Sarah, I love my 1.5 PSP, not for playing old games, but for playing (and testing) games that I do not wish to buy -- but some I do enjoy and would actually buy. So dont think of everyone with a 1.5 as people that play old games, because a lot of people play full PSP games (FOR FREE). Don't hate 1.5 people, because most likely 75% of people still use the 1.5 firmware.

Man, I really got lucky on these. Anyways, well here we go again with the updates. Maybe there will be some sort of break in this one. It's wierd that the moment a big break in homebrew and an update all within 24 hours of each other.
I guess ya get the good with the bad. with the former being Homebrew!!

OK. What? 2.50 didn't have volume control for the LocationFree player? Are you serious? Is Sony REALLY that blockheaded?

Also... WTF? Connection to the internet required to change WMA playability settings?

2.50 is supposedly hacked but currently no downgrader is released for it. I highly suggest for people not to update to 2.60 if you have a 2.50 psp because there is still hope for people to downgrade from that version. And ofcourse if you have 2.0 or under then never update ;)

On these lands, the word and the actions of 'Upgrading' is known as an act of stupidity among the 'mindlesss gamers'. And it will remain like this until the end of time unless Sony learns to embrace what is helping to sell the PSP and destroy what is killing it. Yes, I'm talking about Homebrew and ISO Loaders.

ISO loaders have legitimate purposes too. The ability to carry several games with you at a time without carrying around flimsy cartridges is wonderful. They should in fact add rip+run functionality to the PSP themselves.

For fraseybobo...

Actually I would be surprised if homebrew and ISO loaders count for more then 2% of the PSP's users.

Sony is just trying to protect their investment; I could see calling people morons and dumbasses for upgrading if all the updates did were patch security holes. But they do a few more things then just that, fact is the homebrew that is out is lame at best. And the only games that I actually want to play on the PSP I bought.

RSS, AVC video, MP4 audio, a portable web browser that’s stuff I (as well as a good majority of people who bought the PSP) want in a system... When I want to play Mario Brothers I will fire up on Xbox that's hooked up to my nice 57 inch 1080i HDTV and play it on there, were homebrew is actually worthwhile.

Sony has every reason to forbid homebrew. For every person who's really using homebrews for legitimate purposes, there are probably 10 others who use them to play games that they don't actual own. Piracy hurts Sony. So they must stop that.
