PSP MetronomeIt's the simple but really interesting and useful homebrew apps that always interest us. ExxonValdeez emailed us this little Lua Metronome program he wrote up that will turn your PSP into every musician's best friend.

It's simple: drop-and-play. Copy the folder to the Lua Applications folder in your PSP. Run the program as usual, it should bring you to this setup screen:

PSP Metronome: Setup Screen

Set the desired tempo - which is based on what song or piece you are trying to play - and hit X. That should do it! This program's useful for keeping time with your piano lessons, guitar lessons, violin lessons - anything that requires tempo.

The program, so far, doesn't allow you to change the tempo while it's running - you have to manually quit the program and restart it if you have to set a new tempo.

Check it out to see how this app will work for you.

How come there are not many updates anymore. Guess the summers over and the psp is dieing slowly. Heh, i wonder about the N64 Emu.. what happened to that .... and the gba emu which seemed to have died down. there is still much needed work.

When I tried this out, it was kinda freaky actually.

Then I realized this would be the perfect replacement for anyone who's both a gamer and who plays the piano or is a DDR fanatic... or just someone who wants to creep out his family (heaven forbid).

Yeah, I play bassoon and needed something to fill in when I leave my real metronome elsewhere.

I ACTUALLY THINK THIS IS TIGHT MY SISTER DOES PIANO AND SHE BOUGHT ONE OF THOSE TIMERS IT COST 30 DOLARS...WHEN PPL ACTUALLY MK IT FOR PSP ..WOW UR AWESOME ..SIMPLE BUT TIGHT HOMBREW

» About timing

Well, i was just using it and it turns out that it is very slow. It was because the sound was to long so I made a shorter click file. Here it is: http://www.tradebit.com/usr/exxonvaldeez/pub/8/metsound.it

Just replace the one in the rar with this one.

Anyway, I plan to give it a nice gui and get the tempo correct. Should be released next weekend because I have no time during the week. Thanks for the comments! :)

Why not use a full PSP music program like PSP Rhythm or PSP Kick to set up a metronome? With those, you can adjust tempo while it is playing. You could even set up a beat to play along with.

» okie

I doubt I'll ever have a use for this. Can pack this away with the GBA stopwatch homebrew. hehe

But hey, if even one person finds a use for it, it's useful, and it's more than I've coded for the PSP.

» Ooh yeah!

I forgot to mention, you should put some tuning notes! I play violin so put an A in there!

by .A.J. - 2006-09-18 02:37
» Nice.

As a percussionist this may prove very useful since I gave my last metronome away to a student. Exxon Valdeez, do you have any plans to include subdivisions into this project? I think, once the timing is settled to accurate, that duple and triple subdivisions would be rather handy. I would really love to see a high end metronome emulator, not that I'm complaining about this one or capable of doing it myself.

Thanks man!! I look forward to your next release.

» Make a Dr. Beat emulator!!!

If you could port this to the psp I will name my children after you. http://www.bossus.com/index.asp?pg=1&tmp=91

I'm an avid trombone player and if you were to emulate the features of a metronome such as this it would be awesome!!!

Yeah, it'd be really helpful to add tones for the next step if you wish to take this homebrew to the next level.

I play violin, too. I really only need a 4A to tune, but when playing pieces in weird keys like Gb major or something, it helps to have a background tone to be able to hear if the intonation is correct.

So if you could add tones for A, A#, B, C, . . . , G# or something, that'd be really awesome.
