PSP MAC Address Changer

gracz54 from our forums is back, and this time he's got his PSP Mac Address Changer done and ready for sharing. Now, if you download this, there's only one Eboot around. For the newbies, this means that if you're firmware requires two Eboot folders of the application, then you'll have to use PSP brew.

Another thing to be cautious about is that he's only tested this on 3.03 OE-A. For some run-through on the installation, just paste into psp/game150 (or psp/game). And then, run the app and press X to dump the MAC ID. Once you've grabbed a hex editor, you should be able to see your MAC in hexes at the beginning of the file.

This bit is important! You may actually change the MAC to whatever it is you'd want to be, but DO NOT TYPE IN NEW CHARACTERS or change anything else EXCEPT THE MAC. Why? Because it could brick if you do not heed this warning. So just be a good boy and follow directions to the letter.

That way, we'd all have a nice little MAC Address-changing experience.

» 3.02 OE or 3.03 OE?

In the text, it says this has only been tested on 3.02 OE-A, but in the picture the changed MAC address is on 3.03 OE-A.

Someone help me! Does this run on 3.03 OE-A or not?

» Cool

I thought it was illegal to change the mac address of a device, i was told something like it really goes against the FCC or something. i dunno, could be wrong

Cool app tho, i could see that this could be very useful in the future if/when sony gets a good online server running that checks and blocks psps with custom firmware

its tested on 3.03* OE not 3.02 !!! check the damned picture b4 posting this stupid QJ

by gracz54 - 2007-01-06 01:10
» yeah

Yeah, it was a typo. It works on 3.03 OE-A.

by carboycam - 2007-01-06 01:19
» Type Anything?

So gracz54, can we use ANY hex code we want? So long as it is the same length as the original MAC address.

by gracz54 - 2007-01-06 01:21
» yeah

Yes, you can use any hex code you want, just remember hexes go 0 to 9 and A to F, nothing else. ;)

by Remi M. - 2007-01-06 01:23
» to answer that...

From gracz54's comment post in this article:

"Yeah, it was a typo. It works on 3.03 OE-A."

The article was of course based on the forum release thread. The post was also updated to avoid any confusion. Thanks gracz54 for clearing things up for everybody here. :)

No problem, sorry for the typo tho ;)

» USELESS...

...But so what? It's just another way to customize your PSP, be thankful someone bothered coding something like this (which probably isn't exactly easy); hell, i know it's not something I'd use, but it's still a neat idea, besides it might become useful.

OK, that wasn't very coherent, but you get the idea

» hmmmm

just tested it, it doesn't actually change your mac address, it just changes the system information mac address display. my router still says that my psp has the original mac address... cool i suppose, but pretty useless...

by 2b@d - 2007-01-06 01:38
» Carefull

As i know my computer science if u use other characters than 0-9 and A-F could result in network not working or brick.

I have not testet the app, so there may be only choosable to use those characters, but im writing this in case.

by gracz54 - 2007-01-06 01:43
» bah

You don't modify the file in the app, just on your computer, using your hex editor. ;)

Also it's not possible to input any other characters than 0-9 and A-F in hexes. ;)

It's just not possible. ;)

by gracz54 - 2007-01-06 01:48
» Also

Because I forgot to include it in the app - big thanks to harleyg for all his research done on the IDStorage.

by 2b@d - 2007-01-06 02:26
» sorry

Then i understand. Then there are no problem, except the always existing little risk of bricking when writing to the flash.

by Gexx - 2007-01-06 02:59
» How could this be?

how could you change a mac adress? mac adresses are hardware defined :S. And its useless to change em if you could.

by petemwah - 2007-01-06 03:21
» well...

if you read my previous post you'd realise that the mac address isn't actually changed, just the mac address in system information APPEARS to have changed. it is always the same.

by it doesnt work - 2007-01-06 03:21
» problemsa

where do you put the new macid.bin file in the root correct? and everytime i hit the circle or left trigger to flash, nothing happens the only two things that work is X to dump it and home to exit WHAT GIVES?

this should be removed as:

1. It doesn't actually change the mac address, just tried it, it only changes the system info display.. router still shows old mac.

2. Its a nice way to brick a psp if you screw up, and since it does nothing of use, its not worth the chance.

great, the one thing that wasnt changeable on the psp is now changeable. so if your psp gets stolen by someone who knows how to fiddle with homebrew, theres NO way to prove its your, without having disfigured your psp ahead of time.

» Wait

I'm sure that it is possible to change the mac reported to the router, as people use that at my school to get their xbox/360 online (change to same as comp). That would be a useful app for the psp.

However, if it just changes the mac displayed in the sys info, i don't see much of a point for this, besides of course expanding our knowledge of the psp. Which is end enough in itself.
